Former Jets and Chiefs running back Joe McKnight is dead after being shot in Terrytown, Louisiana on Thursday.

The Jefferson Parrish Sheriff’s Office announced that a man was shot dead on Thursday afternoon and family members at the scene told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that it was McKnight. McKnight’s high school coach also told the New Orleans Advocate that his former player had been killed.

The Advocate reports that the shooting followed a road rage incident. A witness told the Times-Picayune that she saw a man yelling at McKnight, who was trying to apologize, before firing multiple shots that hit McKnight. Per the report, the man firing the gun then stood over McKnight and said “I told you don’t you f--- with me.”

McKnight was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2010 draft after playing for USC in college. He spent three years with the Jets and then played two games for the Chiefs in the 2014 season. McKnight also played in the CFL this year.

Our condolences go out to McKnight’s friends and family.
