The Cowboys are going to the playoffs

Getty Images

This year’s playoff field has its first entrant.

The Cowboys didn’t play on Sunday, but they have booked a ticket to the postseason. Their win over the Vikings on Thursday night gave them routes into the playoffs with losses by either the Buccaneers or the Redskins.

Tampa rallied to win in San Diego, but the Redskins couldn’t do the same in Arizona. That makes the loss of a divisional rival even sweeter than it might have been under other circumstances.

Another divisional rival lost on Sunday when the Giants saw their six-game winning streak end in Pittsburgh. That means the Cowboys can clinch the divisional crown if they beat the Giants next Sunday night.

It would also give them payback for their only loss of the 2016 season and push them a little closer to the No. 1 seed in the conference, so there’s still plenty to play for with a playoff trip already assured.

  1. Nobody thought this when Romo went down again in the preseason… coach of the year right there buddy

  2. Cowboys nation owes a lot of thanks to these horrendous officials.. I have yet to see a call go against them this year and I can think of 5 games this season that should have been losses had the right calls been made. It’s almost comical to be honest

  3. Well this article will certainly have the haters pounding away at their keyboards typing witty little remarks like “won’t last long” or “one and done”

  4. Still a tough game on Sunday but do able. The need to stay focused and not start drinking their own juice. Tampa and Detroit are both play some good ball. Still think that they are do for a loss but still need to play focused. Doesn’t matter what your records are in the playoffs its one and done if your not focused.

absolutely comical…guessing your team didn’t get any calls this year…cry me a river.

  8. Yuck. This means we’re going to see plenty more of Jerruh Jones up in his luxury box. It’s enough to make one puke.

  9. I’m a Cowboys hater, for sure. But in this NFC, they have as good of a chance to get to the SB as any other playoff team does.

  10. distracted9 you haven’t seen one call go against Dallas this year? Is that a serious statement cause that’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen so far on here this season

Did you watch their last game? Do us all a favor and delete your account. Your opinion no longer matters.

  12. So are the Patriots. Who will also be in the AFCC game for the 7th time.
When Dallas gets to the nfcc for the first time in 15 years the world and the Internet will explode and die from so much hoopla.

Gronk or not. Bring on Dallas

  13. Not game changing calls like dem boyz are getting week in and week out.. pull your head out of that cowboy fog and see the rest of the nation knows it’s a joke. You SHOULD be 6-6.. that only happens through swayed officiating. Not my opinion, look it up. Cowboys are getting calls at a rate of 3.6 to 1. First time in the history of the NFL.. just sayin

  14. It’ll be an interesting NFC playoff race. I don’t think anyone is clearly the favorite to make it out of the NFC. If I had to put money on it today, I’d go with Seattle but a lot is going to happen over the next 4 weeks.

Actually, no one thought Romo had any chance of playing all year so it was expected that whomever their back up would be would play a lot of games.
And can we stop all the raves about Prescott and Elliott? They have done a good job for sure, but you give any good QB and RB their offensive line and they’d play great, too.
It all starts with that “O” line and anyone who doesn’t think so isn’t being realistic.
It’s the best line in football and it isn’t even close. And it’s the best line we’ve seen in the NFL since the juiced up line they had to protect Troy Aikman and block for Emmitt Smith.
If the Cowboys win the Super Bowl, they should name their “O” line the MVP.

  16. GM…a joke. Head Coach…a puppet. Romo…made of glass. 2-14…LOL America’s Team!

Saw it…heard it…was promised to be true!

Clinched playoff’s and inside track to home field advantage…this team, right now! Oh, and they have a top 5 youngest team with cornerstones locked up for years…that’s right, year.

    LOL!!!

  17. There is nothing more that every NFL fan outside of Dallas wants to see than a cowboys 1 and done collapse in the first round. Unlikely but would be absolutely epic.

  18. I did see the game Thursday.. I saw Cedric Thornton get a fist full of face mask too.. surprise, surprise.. no call. Announcers just need a recording of “Another missed call by these officials” when the cowboys play.

  19. Anybody who takes the time to look at percentage differentials on penalty called for vs against is looking for a reason to justify their hatred. Perhaps you should try sacking it up as an alternative to crying and go ogling useless statistics buttercup

  20. Congratulations to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys! Winning starts at the top, and Jones has the Cowboys looking like they’re going to be rolling for a while. Dak Prescott is a rookie. The difference between a first year QB and a 2nd year QB is usually pretty big, so the team should continue to improve over the next couple years.

  21. 2 missed face mask penalties playing Philly as well.. squeaked that one out in OT after running the fake punt on 4th and 8 from their own 30.. If you need to run gadgets and fake punts against Philly to win… well

  22. Congrats to the Cowboys!
But they are staying at the kiddie table until they at least make it to a championship game this millennia

Did the hit to the face change the trajectory of the ball? Was it catchable? If you answer no to both these questions you should probably stop posting…..

  25. I’m sorry Cowboy fans.. I can’t really hear you telling teams to stop complaining about the officiating.. It’s being drowned out by the echos of last years cries “It was a catch” Only cowboys fans would claim call differentials have no bearings on games.. umm it is a stat dude. No need to do the math, it’s done for you. You just have to look buttercup

  26. First off he never grabbed the face mask he hit the helmet and in the same game the hands to the face on Scandrick, the clipping on Escobar and the hold on Free were all ridiculous penalties AGAINST Dallas. Second off Philly was playing well that point in the season so not sure why that’s a justified criticism so much as your just digging. Please get off PFT there’s enough uninformed fans on here who think they what’s going on we don’t need another

Romo came in healthy. Kellen Moore was the backup. Dak won the job and his passer rating is I think now higher than wilsons was his rookie year. Yes this o-line is a beast but the league did not award this line to them, nor did they cheat to get it. They drafted this line for this reason. Protect the qb and run the ball. The o-line is not an excuse for their success, it’s one of the reasons. Dez, Witten, Cole Beasley have the passing game on point as well. So in no way did anyone think that Dak was going to be this good and win 11 games in a row… some people thought zeke could be this good but no one would have projected 11-1 and a playoff birth clinched. They lost to the Giants by 1 point because Terrance Williams didn’t run out of bounds. They would probably be 12-0 if he did. That’s an insane thought and nobody thought that.

  28. If the NFL is all about BigD, they would have been rewarded with favorable calls for the past 4 years. They weren’t, and actually got really unfavorable calls many times. So enough with the officials are pulling for Dallas. Really lame.

I sure wish Denver had their o-line, Trevor might be able to survive the season with some blocking. Oh well, last year it was all about the D, maybe this year will be all about the “O”.

Not so much haters.. stating facts.. umm.. face mask?

Ummm… false start. Face mask never happened.

  30. It will be a blowout if the Cowboys make it to the SB against the Patriots. Belichick just doesn’t lose to a rookie QB.

  31. Apparently reading comprehension is an issue for you as well. I do believe I referred to it as a stat and if I’ve learned anything having Romo as my teams QB the last 10 years it’s that stats are useless. Much like everything you’ve posted

  32. I can’t bring myself to say go BigD, unless the D stands for Denver, but wow… them Cowboys are seriously fun to watch. Watching a great offense carve up a defense is awesome. Especially when it’s done by pounding the rock down the field with O-line strength.

Winning with running is old school, and that is what has been fun to see.

Go Denver, may they win another SB with defense. It’s all they got. Lol.

  33. distracted9 also forgot that the whole play should have been blown dead for a false start on the Vikings’ LT. Don’t let facts get in the way, though.

Bad officiating does not equal 11 straight wins. I don’t know who you root for, but the Cowboys are better than whoever they are. Quit your whining, and deal with it. The officiating has been terrible this year, but it’s been terrible league-wide, not just in games involving the Cowboys. And while you’re whining about a no-call against Dallas on the 2 pt conversion, why don’t you watch it again and look at the false start by the Vikings LT that was also missed by the refs.

  35. I can see why the Cowboys making the playoffs warrants it’s own headline on the PFT blog when Brady setting an all time record for wins by a QB (and in the fewest number of games played, as well), doesn’t. Afterall, which story is the biggest surprise?

But it does beg the question of whether Jerry Jones had to use his influence within football circles/TV networks to get that headline, in the same way he is forcing himself into the HOF.

  36. Distract9
Why are you going back to the philly game? Can’t you except that your team lost because it couldn’t score a touchdowns instead of field goals!!!! Then you have to go all the way to the packer game more to prove a point.. Man are you reaching!!!!you would be more creditable if you stop posting now!!!

  37. They lost to the Giants by 1 point because Terrance Williams didn’t run out of bounds.

    ——————————-

I could argue poor timing when taking timeouts cost them the game. Or at least and extra 40 seconds or so. But moot point…Clinching the division next week anyway.

  38. Distracted9 if you saw Thursday’s game like you said then you also saw the missed false start by the left tackle on the same play as the missed facemask. Don’t believe me? Google the play and see for yourself. Dallas also had more penalties in the game but they get all the calls. You’re a clown making clown comments. It’s entertaining.

Awwwww. Are you a little chapped after today’s loss to Pittsburgh?

Speaking of puking, l get that very feeling from your team’s owner Frankenhead Mara. You know, the guy that extended Josh Brown after they knew about his domestic abuse. The same guy that cried for Dallas and Washington to lose draft picks for spending more money in an uncapped year.

Maybe Mara gets some new shiny neck bolts for Christmas to keep his mind off the Giants dripping out of the playoffs in the final month of football.

Dude, they had the exact same O Line last season and the league’s 4th leading rusher. How’d that work out?

  41. Man, the butt hurt is strong. You had to know as soon as the Cowboys started having success people’s heads would start exploding. Haven’t seen 700levelvet talking his trash in every Dallas post lately that’s for sure.

Nobody knows what’s going to happen from here, could be one and done, could be a Super Bowl but I know things look good for the next 5 years and for that I’m thankful.

    ===============

    Wrong.
    Wrong.
    Wrong.

Prescott did not win the starting QB position. He’s never won a starting QB position. He’s always been a backup who got his chance when the starter went down with injury.

This team is 11-1 with the third string QB playing. Imagine the domination we’d have if Romo were starting.

  44. Dallas had bad calls on zekes 40 yard run and the interception that was called back. Not to mention a few of their 3rd down plays that should have been 1st downs but they got questionable calls… the face mask at the end was just another example of bad calls that night

  45. There is nothing more that every NFL fan outside of Dallas wants to see than a cowboys 1 and done collapse in the first round.

    —————————————————————

Very unlikely the Cowboys will even be in the first round. Although not completely sure-proof, the odds are very good they will get a first round bye.

Of course one and done in the second round is still possible — but it will be a home game and they’ll be favored.

  46. I’ve been watching the Dallas Cowboys play football since I was a baby in 1961. I have seen it all. And what I know is this: the Cowboys will lift your spirit and break your heart at the same time on any game day, every season.
Win the division, then I’ll have reason to be impressed.
Forget the wild card round. Win the divisional round of the playoffs, then I’ll have reason to hope.
Win the conference championship, then I’ll have reason to believe.
Win the Super Bowl, then I’ll have reason to know.
Dallas has not advanced past the divisional round of the playoffs since 1995. That was also the last year the Cowboys won a conference championship and a Super Bowl.
Until they do so again, they’ll always be the same old Cowboys, next year’s champions.

I always laugh when someone makes stuff up to try a prove a point – because they always end up embarrassed in the end, and looking like a fool.

    Cowboys – 79 enforced penalties
    Opponents – 71 enforced penalties

Where exactly is the 3.6 to 1 ratio you refer to?

Cowboys have 2 wins where they had more than twice as many penalties as their opponent (Eagles and Steelers). The Ravens game is the only one of the 12 where the Cowboys had a significantly lower number of penalties.
