Bowles told media of QB change before he told Fitzpatrick

When Jets coach Todd Bowles decided that Ryan Fitzpatrick was finished as the team’s starting quarterback, he didn’t tell Fitzpatrick first.

Instead, Bowles made the announcement to the media after Monday night’s loss to the Colts. Only after that did Bowles talk to Fitzpatrick about it.

“I’d been meaning to talk to him and I got tied up with a few things,” Bowles said of the failure to inform Fitzpatrick.

Some players might have responded to that by blasting their coach, but Fitzpatrick was measured in his comments to the media, which Bowles seemed to appreciate.

“I probably could’ve and he tried to cover for me,” Bowles said on Tuesday. “Like I said, I had a lot on my mind and got some things off my chest, and it kind of went over the wrong way. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.”

On the long list of things that have gone wrong for the Jets this year, a miscommunication on a quarterback change is not near the top. But it’s still not a good look: Bowles should have let Fitzpatrick know he was benched.

  1. After holding out and showing up only to lay a huge egg, the least he deserved was to have this happen to him.

  2. Where’s the “keep Todd Bowles” crowd now? After saying the teams effort was fine Monday night and this no matter your opinion on Fitz this is wrong. The guy has just proven he doesn’t deserve another year. He’s afraid of hurting the locker rooms feelings because he knows he has no control over them, they’ve given up on him.

  3. That offseason slap fight between the jests and Fitz looks pretty laughable now…. terrible QB asking for bug $$$, and for what… This type of performance? Should have dumped him and moved on a long long time ago.

  4. Do people still care about Ryan Fitzpatrick? The guy had the audacity, making over $10mil this season, to complain about being benched, while leading the NFL in interceptions.

I can’t stand this clown. I hope this February he finds out he is released by reading Adam Schefter’s twitter.

  5. Both the GM and HC are bad.
Normally I’d like the HC gone ASAP, but the Jets need to take 2017, and thats more easily accomplished with a bad HC, so keep Bowles another year.

  6. Why does Brandon Marshall cost more on DraftKings this year than last year??? That is the question!!!

  7. Maybe he should just leave a post it on his desk that reads “Don’t want to HC the NYJ”… seems to have worked out ok for some other guy who did that…

  8. Bowles….the head coach of the Jets who is so far in over his head he can’t see the light….

Fitzpatrick…..the former starting quarterback of the Jets who is waiting to see what clipboard he holds next year in??????

  9. “I’d been meaning to talk to him and I got tied up with a few things,”
    _______________

I hope one of those things was packing up his office. Who’d have thunk Bowles could this quickly have people longing for the better-managed days under Rex Ryan?

I can’t wait for one of his players to tell the media that he’d been meaning to attend Bowles’ team meetings but got tied up with some other things.

  10. Why are people ripping Fitz for holding out? If the Jets had offered a market rate contract Fitz would have been there at the start of camp. Instead, the Jets tried to nickel and dime the situation.

  11. What is the hysteria over Ryan Fitzpatrick?

The guy is a career journeyman — a backup.

    Enough already.

He’s Matt Flynn with a beard.

  12. Fitz is done with the Jets and he’d have to be the most optimistic person in the world to think he’s coming back next season with them.

He only has himself to blame for his dismal performance. Holdouts generally result in a very poor level of play from that player.

On the other hand if he’s smart with his money, he’s made almost 6 million this year after taxes and agent’s fees. That’s enough for any smart person to live for the remainder of their life without ever working another day.

And since he’ll probably never get another NFL paycheck after this season he better make good use of what he’s already made.

The biggest question is why is Fitzpicktrick on theirs or any other NFL roster

Because guys like Keenum, Osweiler, Siemien, Bortles, McCown, Gabbert, Hoyer, and Tannehill are still finding ways to start around the league?

Fitz had a 3.2 GPA at Harvard. Thought he was smarter than that.
    ———————–

The guy has made millions of dollars as a mediocre quarterback. He’s not so dumb.

  15. The Jets looked absolutely terrible the other night. I bet the Browns and Bears could beat them. I doubt the 49ers could. Those are tge bottom four teams in the league.

  16. You would think the Jets would have learned from the Bills about hastily giving Fitzpatrick money after a few decent performances.

That’s probably on the 4.0 grade scale.

Fitzpatrick thought that he would be in such high demand, that there would be multiple teams bidding for his services.

When it became abundantly clear that no one wanted him, he should have just signed with the Jets at what ever they were offering.

  19. More than likely the Jets front office will back Todd at years end. Sadly there is no QB on the horizon to save his job next year. And coaching alone has not been his strong suit up to now. I expect Bowles will fair less than Miami, Buffalo and NE and not have a winning 2017 season, making it an easy call for the Jets to part ways thereafter.

  20. Jets don’t do many smart things, but not paying Fitz was very smart. The guy never had 2 good years in a row in his career and even last year, his best year, he was under 60% completions. He is the definition of a journeyman backup and is way overpaid already.

  21. I wouldn’t worry about it, Todd. Neither you or Fitzpatrick will be with the Jets next year anyway.
Besides, Fitz showed his usual lack of class after he found out by saying he didn’t care about the Jets’ future. All he cares about is himself.

  22. Every team that dumped Tebow is cursed. Broncos lose SuperBowl, limp through one again with Manning, then fall to mediocrity. Patriots in Deflategate. Jets being Jetsy. Meanwhile Tebow is in Spring Training. One step away from the Show. You mess with the best, you get the horns.

  23. Who cares? So what! Fitzpatrick isn’t the present or the future. Big deal. His play this year has been horrible. He couldn’t care less about the Jets. I blame the GM who signed him, way before I even begin to think about Bowles. I mean, if you’re the GM of a team and you’re beginning the season with Fitzpatrick, you’re not doing anyone in the organization any favors. I get sick and tired of ripping coaches when they don’t have a QB. I hate to keep bringing up Jack Del Rio, but he got fired from Jacksonville because he had Blaine Gabbert, and now he’ll get Coach of the Year in Oakland because he has Derek Carr. Please let me know if there are two Jack Del Rio’s.

  24. every time ryan fitzpatrick has his name mentioned the 1st thing that is said is “he went to harvard” going to harvard is a fantastic accomplishment , but that does not excuse all the dumb things he has done on the field during his career. bad decisions and tons of picks etc. i would rather have a dumb guy from bucktooth a&m who makes smart plays on the field.

  25. Very classless move by Bowles. Is it necessary to even announce it to the media? No it is not. Lets see how he likes it when it is announced to the media first that he is fired!

  26. “You mess with the best, you get the horns.”

In exactly what alternate universe would Tebow qualify as “the best” ?

He was an at best very mediocre NFL level QB, and at worst a bottom 3 QB.

SMH @ people still defending and calling for Tebow in the NFL

    ======================

LOL, Tebow is hitting 0.194. He’s not going anywhere but the instructional leagues, which is below single A ball. Those teams minus the Jests have actually won a Super Bowl since your messiah left.

  28. As a Cards fan, I know some of the best coaches don’t make the best “managers” and are better when sticking to what they do best rather than trying to juggle the chainsaws of being a HC. The Jets Organization was a hot mess going in, the Owner is now on track to be an “ambassitor” for the Donald (when he couldn’t run his own organization) and I would LOVE it, if Coach Bowles would return to Arizona and the Cards Organization.
Still, that WAS really unfortunate, but we don’t know the details of how such a snafu occurred.

  29. Brandon Marshals Fitzpatrick boat just got torpedoed. Marshal should be checking out the rest of the season now. His hands will magically turn into rocks

  30. I hold no ill will towards Fitz’s holdout for a better contract. Any of us would have done the same thing with the year he had.

History can be a great teacher, and the Jets management had history to look at right in their own division with similar mistakes the Bills made. They failed to make the connection.

  31. mmack66 says: “When it became abundantly clear that no one wanted [Fitz], he should have just signed with the Jets at what ever they were offering”.

Why in the world would Fitz do that? He has already made 10s of millions before this season. He’s playing for his grandchildren’s trust fund. There is no reason for him to risk his body for anything less than top dollar.

  32. The “fire Bowles” comments are misplaced. After 15 games last year, the Jets were in playoff position. Granted, 9 of the 13 games since have been losses, but I find it difficult to believe that Bowles has completely forgotten how to coach in 11 months.

  33. The whole world wanted a QB change two games ago. I doubt there was any surprise on Fitzpartick’s part.

As to Bowles, I think as head coaches go, he’s a good defensive coordinator.

  34. Fitzpatrick didn’t deserve to be told in advance. Much like his hold out and waiting until the very last second to sign his contract, he toyed with the Jets before and during the season.
