Derek Carr wont blame pinky finger for performance

Derek Carr wasn’t going to blame the weather, and he wasn’t going to blame his messed-up finger.

Mostly, he blamed himself, which seems like the most accurate thing about his night.

The Raiders quarterback turned in one of his worst games as a pro in last night’s loss to the Chiefs, at a time when many were touting him as an MVP candidate. Carr was a dreadful 17-of-41 passing for 117 yards, with no touchdowns. He didn’t throw a pick either, but that 49.1 passer rating was indicative of his night.

It was definitely a bad night, no way of getting around that,” Carr said, via Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com. “I hate to have a bad night coming on this one, out of all the games we’ve had. Obviously, we didn’t do enough.

“I feel very responsible for that because of being the leader of the offense and the team. I feel sick to my stomach when we put something like that out there on film. It hurts, I can promise you that. I put too much time into this to go do something like that.”

Carr is still feeling the effects of the dislocated right (throwing) pinky finger, which couldn’t have helped in frigid conditions, but he didn’t want to use that as an excuse.

“It definitely wasn’t the finger’s fault,” Carr said. “Everything about tonight was unusual, to be honest. To have our defense step up for us and make plays, and for us to go out there and not execute, do things we don’t do. . . . That’s why it’s frustrating. That why I promise you I’m not worried.

“We played awful. It wasn’t good enough, but I’m not worried because I know the guys in the locker room. I’m not worried one bit, but it just sucks. We have to take it. We have to take the punch, but I’m not worried. I think we’re going to bounce back.”

If they’re going to, they’re going to have to have Carr return to the way he was playing, in practically every other game this season.

  1. After watching Oakland this season, it was weird to see them play like Al Davis was still above ground running the show. I kept waiting for the team to turn it on like they did last week and roll over the Chiefs but they never flipped the switch.

  2. Wow.
Carr and Del Rio have got to be the 2 biggest, arrogant, sore losers, and excuse makers in the whole damn league.

How bout giving credit where its due?
The Chiefs defense DOMINATED the Raiders all night.
The Chiefs offense gave the Raiders 9 points , from turnovers.

Maybe Carr played poorly because the Chiefs defense CAUSED him to play poorly.

Look, the Raiders have gotten lucky all year long. Its a FLUKE that they have 10 wins.
And when they get DOMINATED by a much better team, TWICE, they make excuses. CLASSLESS.

The Chiefs played terrible both games and STILL dominated them.

Raiders are pretenders. The Chiefs have exposed them twice now as frauds.

  3. The game felt really tense to me because the stage was set for another comeback for the Raiders.

The defense starting making stops and it looked like another comeback in the making.

I don’t know if it was the cold or if he re injured his hand, but he was way off last night.

  4. Just a great leader! Saying the same message everywhere. Injury or not, Carr and his receivers failed to deliver. Only 3 points out of a potential 14 early in the 2nd half would have made this game look a lot different.

KC played lights out the first half, and A.Smith is beyond a doubt more than just a game manager (JDR was wrong on this one); any team would be very lucky to have him (hello Niners?)

As for my Raiders…KC is “that” team and they can only hope for yet another crack at them in the playoffs, likely again in KC.

Raiders road will be made a lot easier if they take 2 out of the next 3 games. If not, a likely wildcard matchup in Baltimore or Pittsburgh is not very attractive.

  5. That loss is definitely on Carr. Defense gave up 14 points and forced three turnovers. Carr just stunk. The Chiefs are in his head. Dishonorable mention to the punter.

  6. After watching that Raiders team respond to cold weather the longer term playoff implications of losing that game are even bigger than they seemed going in. Losing home field may not hurt Oakland all that much in the first round. As long as they are no lower than the 5 seed they will draw whatever indoor team (unless somehow it’s TN) the AFCS sends to the playoffs. But it’s more likely than not that ‘frigid conditions’ can be expected in Arrowhead or Gillette in January.

  7. Bump in the road. They were bound to have a bad game. Glad it happened now and not in the playoffs. They’ll rebound in San Diego next week on 10 days rest.

  8. This is why Thursday night football is terrible. All bets are off. A lot of good teams come out and lay an egg after the short turnaround.

  9. The guy couldn’t throw the football with that cast on his finger. He doesn’t need excuses. I’ve seen every throw he’s ever made. His ten worse throws of his career all came in the same game where he was wearing a cast on his throwing hand. The Raiders don’t have anything to worry about. Just hurry and get that cast off. They’ll be fine.

  10. He was missing throws he normally makes in his sleep. It was obvious to anyone with a brain that his broken finger- combined with the cold- was clearly bothering him as he couldn’t grip the ball well. That plus taking away his ability to line up under center limited his plays to mostly short passes means an inept looking offense. A healthy Carr and you have a MUCH different game… If his finger doesn’t get better for the playoffs, they are one and done.

  11. Over the past decade plus the worst 3 divisions in the NFL have traditionally been

    #6 AFC West

Then there is a big gap

    #7 NFC South
    #8 AFC South

This is an anomaly year when these three divisions all play each other. That is 14 out of 16 games vs inferior quality for the bottom 12 teams in the NFL.

The AFC West probably has passed the NFC North. So they are now closer to the middle of the NFL than the bottom of the NFL. Heading in the right direction but two of their teams may relocate. They need stability to maintain their trajectory upward.

  12. Been 3 years since I’ve been on here ( got tired of the political crap ) and I am a lifelong KC resident and fan. I like that Carr didn’t use the broken finger excuse (even though it probably did affect him) and I don’t think that his season should be judged on how he plays against one team. He’ll most likely win an MVP(s) at some point ,even if he doesn’t win it this year and I am excited that Chiefs/Raiders games are going to be meaningful for the foreseeable future.

  13. @iknowitall,
Did u bother reading the article? Carr was talking about his game play not the chefs defense. No the defense didn’t DOMINATE the Raiders, the Raiders handed the chefs the game with penalties and piss poor play from Carr, if Carr would have compleated to Cooper on that out route and his receivers would have held on to the ball when Carr did throw it accurately. That would have been atleast 2 tds from to the Raiders in the 2nd half. With the Raiders D holding the chefs offense in check since 6 mins left in second qtr, besides the punt return my math the Raiders would have won 27-21, but has it stands Carrs pinky definitely hindered his throwing wether Carr wants to admit it or not, Raiders play calling was questionable, 3-1 with Murray ripping 5-7 yard gains yet u call a passing play and try for 10-15 yrs instead of the 1.
I respect Carr even more for not blameing anyone or his pinky but himself for this pisspoor performance, the Raiders had every chance to tie up and win that game but either shot them selves in the foot with a penalty or just didn’t get the job done.
Hope we meet again in the playoffs when Carrs hand is healthy, safety Joseph and our left gaurd Osemele are both healthy ,, it will be a different game then.
The Raiders offense didn’t preform well and it wasn’t the chefs defense that was the reason why, it was Carrs errant throws and dropped passes. If one of those dropped passes or errant throws would have been completions Raiders could have been down by 1 or tied it up and that last drive a field goal could have won..
the game was only a dropped pass and erreant throw from being that way .. chefs D no Carrs pinky hindering him yes.

Well said! I keep reminding myself that the Chiefs had the Pats on the ropes last year.

Very good on both sides of the ball. Any idea what their tiebreaker is with the Pats now? Homefield is huge.

  15. @Iknowitall

Don’t be a troll. He never once blamed anyone but himself and the team. You won and deserved to win, but let’s not attack him when he CLEARLY owned up to it

Stop it with excuses. The entire Chiefs team played a great game on a short turnaround. Even the Raiders defense kept their team in it to the end. Only an idiot would think yesterday’s game was terrible football.

  17. I wasn’t worried about the Raiders before yesterday and I’m certainly not worried about the Chiefs today. The Raiders don’t have a championship defense and the Chiefs have Alex Smith, the guy who couldn’t get it done in San Francisco. None of these two teams can come to Foxborough and win in January.

I’ve hated any AFC West rival since my grade school days, but respect all of them, more so today.

What my Raiders learnt yesterday, is what the Chiefs learnt in Foxborough during the divisional round game last year. Be careful for what you wish for.

No wonder Pats fans are hated & especially disrespected from coast to coast!

  19. Don’t worry Raiders, Carr is legit. I’ve been saying that for awhile even though I’m a Pats fan. Just a bad day, that’s all. The Pats lost against the Hawks and they are facing the Ravens on Monday. A very good team who hates our team. We expect a brawl.
Like Brady, Carr is not making any excuses and taking the responsibility for the loss instead of shifting it to everything else. That kid has a stout heart and a natural leader. I wanted the Chiefs to win for selfish reason, but I was so mad because later on Smith was so lethargic and can’t move the ball, I just wanted the Raiders to win because Carr was trying so hard.
Pats fan are hated because our team find ways to win. On the contrary, Pats’ haters are the worst and the most infantile in the world.

  20. If you knew it all you would spell correctly! Or at least be smart enough to use auto correct. And also the Chiefs defense did not dominate the game the Raiders receivers dropped almost every pass that hit them in the hands when they were wide open that sir is not dominating it is catching a team on an off night.
    Raider Nation out.
