Mike Shanahan’s not being hired by the 49ers, in any capacity

The 49ers likely will be making changes after the season, but not nearly as dramatic as a recent report from CBS suggested.

Per Jason La Canfora, who added to a Sunday splash report with a Monday cannonball on KNBR, “Jed [York] would be out. He wouldn’t be involved in football operations.”

La Canfora also has floated Mike Shanahan’s name as someone who would oversee the football side of the 49ers.

According to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, none of those things will be happening. Jed York won’t be leaving the football operation, his parents (Denise DeBartolo York and Dr. John York) won’t be replacing him, and the team won’t be hiring Mike Shanahan in any capacity.

Not may be or could be or possibly will be or any of the other weasel words that will litter so many reports of comings and goings over the next few weeks. Will not be, period.

As the source explained it, the CBS report likely originated from an effort by Shanahan to get his name in circulation as the offseason carousel begins to spin. He has made no secret of his desire to get back in the NFL, but to date he has found no takers.

If he finds one, it won’t be in San Francisco. Unless Carrot Top buys the team, apparently.

  1. Well of course not, any of those things would begin to rectify what the 49ers organization has become: a three ring circus set on fire with clowns pouring grease on the flames.

  2. Jason 0 for 3. The rumors are cranking out early. Can’t these guys wait until after the season to stir the pot?

  3. Shannahan’s desperation to be relevant is sad and pathetic. He’s a nasty old bitterman that butts heads with everyone around him. The game and the men who play it now have passed him by.
Joining the 49ers would be a perfectly dysfunctional fit for both parties.

  4. “a three ring circus set on fire with clowns pouring grease on the flames.”

That is the funniest description I’ve read in some time. Very, very strong effort! Well done.

  5. Shanahan would be a far better choice than any of the clowns they have running the team into the ground now. This sad franchise needs experience for a change instead of rolling the dice on unproven coaches which has burned them multiple times already.

  6. The current state of the 49ers make the Singletary years look well run in comparison.

Good thing for them the Browns have stolen the show this year.

Goff is a coach killer. This could be a bad job for a head coach.

No one has any idea if Goff can play or not – it’s too early to say.

Regardless, I think we all know that Jim Harbaugh would take this same roster and have them in the playoff race in his first year.

  8. What a dumb rumor. Of course they aren’t going to bring in Shanahan to replace the owner’s son.

At least say he would be replacing Baalke.

Wow, sounds like someone is a little paranoid.

  10. He never was a decent coach, he cannot judge talent, and if it weren’t for Elway he would not even have been close to a SB

Elway never won a SB without Shanahan. And Shanahan never won a SB until he drafted Terrell Davis. And Bill Walsh never won a SB without Joe, Belichek no without Shady. Is this making sense yet?

  11. Jason LaConman is a fraud and he cannot be trusted. We had his level of incompetence in Washington and this man is simply worthless as a source. If he reports something, the opposite is true.

  12. He never was a decent coach, he cannot judge talent, and if it weren’t for Elway he would not even have been close to a SB

So what happened when Elway retired? And he even was lucky the 98 Vikings didn’t make it or back to back would have never happened.

  13. It would be nice for everyone if Denise would just allow Eddie to hire someone to run the football operation. If you had a brother that was a HOF owner and five time super bowl winner, wouldn’t you listen to his advice? That’s how ridiculous this is.

  14. Mike Shanahan would hurt Jed’s feelings. They’ll find another stooge like Mike Singledummy, Tomsula or Fat Boy Kelly and his gimmick offense. This team will be terrible for the next decade

Do you even football? Shanahan is a genius. He knew if he let Elway run the show he’d never win a Super Bowl. That’s why he handed the ball to Terrell Davis 35 times against the Packers while Elway went 8-20 for 120 yards and an INT.

Elway has a career Super Bowl passer rating of about 59. He’s an epic big-game choke. Davis and Shanahan carried him to his rings.

  16. WHAT ABOUT THAT COMEDIAN “CARROT TOP” IN THE PHOTO ABOVE? YEAH YOUR RIGHT HE WOULD TURN THAT JOB DOWN!

  17. Holmgren’s got his Tommy Bahama shirts cleaned and pressed, so he’s ready to step in whenever.

  18. Back in the dynasty years when Bill Walsh and George Seifert were winning super bowls, the guy that ran the football operations was John McVay. He hired all the scouts and front office staff. Maybe the York’s could talk to McVay and see what he thinks. I mean, McVay has five super bowl rings. It’s nuts that he’s not in the HOF. He wasn’t a big self-promoter, so he gets over-looked. But he obviously knows how to put together a winning front office.

  19. No they won’t replace Jed and hire a football guy to oversee the team. That would make sense and nothing these York clowns have ever done has made sense. Jed is such a pansy he couldn’t handle Harbaugh saying mean things to him so he got rid of our best coach in over a decade. This ownership is such a joke!

  20. He gets the best from players , been a proven winner and is someone the Niners needed last year and moving forward. Niners , make it happen.
