Coming back in loss offers little solace to Ravens

The Ravens were able to cut a 20-point Patriots lead down to three points on Monday night, but their comeback stalled there and the Patriots ended the game as 30-23 winners.

The rebound made for a tighter end, but it didn’t make the result any sunnier for members of the Ravens. Linebacker Terrell Suggs said in his postgame comments that there aren’t any moral victories and that the game felt like a “shot in the mouth” for a team that got a reminder about the dangers of starting slow.

Wide receiver Steve Smith had a similar take when it came the team’s rally.

“I was not happy with the loss,” Smith said. “Are we happy when we battled back? It was like getting a terrible sandwich. You bite into it, it’s still terrible, but you give the person who made it kudos.”

Suggs called the game a “shot in the mouth” and said the Ravens are now playing a three-game season. There’s no margin for error left in that season if the Ravens want to make it to the postseason, so they’ll need to show they can still tap into that resiliency after this loss.

  1. The Ravens only got back into the game because of two terrible special team gaffs by the Pats.
The game was far more lopsided than the final score would indicate.

    ummm, what?

  3. The sense of urgency for the Ravens in the last 5 minutes reminded me of the Eagles in SB 39. They were running the play clock under 10 seconds.
As a Pats fan, I’ll take it.

  4. I’m not sure which is better, a blowout that this should/d have been or the heartbreaking near miss that it was. Made for a long exciting night, for some fans anyway.

  5. For Given how purely unlikeable many of the Raven players and Coach is, Smitty is 100% pure entertainment.
Really wish Pats made a play for him when he was available.

At least Martellus showed up last nite for the first time in over a month.
Mavens now have to basically win out.
Pure X-mas joy to have our home team put them in the vice and slowly tighten it for 4 hours last nite.
Harbaugh looked as lost as Tom Hanks in Castaway for 90% of the game.
    Priceless

  6. And the refs bottled out of awarding a huge strip-sack on Flacco early in the game deep in Ravens territory! They said Flacco’s forward progress had stopped but it hadn’t even started, he wasn’t a runner, he was tackled as he dropped back and stripped as he was pushed over backwards – if you give him “forward progress” at that point then 75% of strip-sacks would be voided.

  7. When you take the lead and never give it up….., well then you know your the better team.

When you have a rookie make a huge mistake and still hold on to win.. then you know your the better team

When a 39 year old Quarterback throws for 400+ yards and 3 touchdowns and one int….against the best defense in the NFL…well then you know you just lost to the Greatest of all time.

  8. What kind of moral victory do you get when Cyrus Jones is the person responsible for your comeback? In any case, Suggs was a no show other than his mouth.

  9. lol at a team and fan base that has to take “solace” in the fact the final score didn’t reflect the humiliating clownstomping and beat down the ravens received on national tv. LOL!

  10. Good game Baltimore.

Amazing stat they flashed up during the game.
    All time Dec wins

    Brett Farve 52-25
Tom Brady 51-10 (Now 52-10 with the win last night)

Talk about obliterating the old standard for excellence.
Folks you best lock up your record books because they are not safe from TB12.

  11. The Ravens didn’t come back. And while the PFT writers (Jackson, Alper, Florio) don’t seem to recognize that, the Ravens sure do.

The Ravens said it well. “The Patriots punched us in the mouth today and shut us up. They even helped us off the canvas before the ten count several times, allowed us to get our legs back, tied one arm behind their back and then punched us in the mouth again, and again.”

    Now that’s what actually happened.

  12. Did you see Joe Flacco’s line for the game?

    37 of 52 for 324, with 2 TDs and a pick.

    That’s a passer rating of 92.1!

For the year, his rating us up at 84.8!

Is there any question that Joe Flacco is elite?!?!

And the Pats capitalized off 2 Special Teams gaffs that we had. So nullify them and the Ravens Still lose by 7.

But here’s the deal. The Pats were outstanding last night. I won’t take that away. The Ravens suffer from the following issues – no running game and penalties (mostly pre-snap).

  14. I don’t agree with this idea that the Ravens cant run. They ran the ball pretty good in the second half when they actually committed to the run. Dixon is a stud. He was the best player on that offense last night. The rest of the offense was pedestrian

  15. Dont Vontaze Me Bro!!

I should have written “no commitment to the running game”.

If a team is going to commit to a running game, they need to show that in the first half of a game. A running game helps wear down the opposing defense too. There are so many benefits. But it’s as though the Ravens feel like they aren’t capable of running until they either have a lead or have already scored some points on offense, usually via the air.

  16. Should have been 2-3 touchdown win for Patriots. All they have to do now is have Edelman stand back and fair catch every damn punt – no more punt returns!!! They can’t do it. Every kick is an adventure. Amendola got hurt returning a kick he should have made a fair catch on. Stop this nonsense – take a fair catch, and don’t let Jones near a punt return again!!!!

  18. The Ravens suffer from … an in-over-his-head head coach, a dumb-as-rocks QB, and a gumbed-up defensive “star” who regularly takes the night off. Other than that …
