Anthony Lynn likes spirit, not execution of the Rooney Rule

Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn has taken some head coaching interviews he might have only gotten because of the Rooney Rule.

He has also turned down other chances to interview, because he believed he was simply acting as a box that had to be checked off to be in compliance with the Rooney Rule.

“I think it’s good to get in front of the decision-makers and let them hear what you have to say,” Lynn said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “But at the same time, I think some people take advantage of it. I’m not for it. Hire the best man for the job. That’s all I want.”

The rule was instituted because for a long time, all those best men happened to be white. When Todd Bowles got the Jets job in the 2015 offseason, he became the only first-time hire of a minority coach in the last five hiring cycles. The rule requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head coaching jobs, and has been expanded to include General Manager positions as well.

Lynn interviewed with the Dolphins and 49ers a year ago, but has avoided other interviews because he felt like teams were using him to meet a quota. He interviewed for the Jets job in 2015 (which went to Bowles).

“I think sometimes people do that to check the box,” Lynn said Thursday. “I don’t agree with it. . . .

“[The rule] has its pros and cons. If I didn’t do the interview in New York, maybe my name wouldn’t be circulating right now, I don’t know. But I think it’s good to get in front of the decision-makers and let them hear what you have to say.”

It’s a catch-22 for some minority coaches, because if they don’t participate in the process they absolutely won’t get a job. But you will see names circulate in a few weeks that look like outliers for a reason.

The purpose of the rule was to create a pool of qualified candidates, and force teams to pause to consider that melanin was not a disqualifying factor. But the results have not followed from the league’s best intentions, as the hiring process is as white as it’s ever been.

  1. This is the great weakness of any affirmative action program. You’re forcing racial integration instead of letting it happen naturally.

  2. If African American coaches should have more chances at coaching positions, what about white football players asking for an equal shot, since the majority of players in the league are African American?

Sure, there are plenty of white players that ‘tryout’ just like there are plenty of black coaches that, if they were capable, would get a shot. Word gets around in the league if your a quality coach.

So. They’re all humans. That’s all that matters. Stop being obsessed about skin color if you help end racism.

  4. I’d be curious if a Black Head Coach was ever hired because of the Rooney Rule. Meaning, has a black candidate ever been called in for an interview just to check a box, but then blew the owner away with how he handled the interview process and ended up getting hired. Probably a question we’ll never know the answer to, but I’m curious.

  5. Caldwell in DET is the head coach as a direct result of the Rooney Rule. DET was all-in on Whisenhunt. They even had a private jet flown to SD to pick him up. When he said screw you Lions and went to TEN, DET went to option B. Caldwell impressed them in his Rooney interview and ended up getting the job. Sometimes you can’t hire your #1 choice. The Rooney Rule is working just fine.

“Hire the best man for the job.”

Like we used to do when America was great.

Like we used to do when America was great- for white men, and objectively not-so-great for everyone else.

    Fixed that for you.

There are still many people alive today in this country who lived during a period when black people couldn’t vote or go to the same schools and restaurants as white people because everyone agreed they just didn’t deserve it. Let that sink in. It wasn’t that long ago but it gets conveniently left out of the make America great “again” narrative. I’m all for improving the country, but pretending that reverting to the 1950’s is how we can do it is preposterous and pretty offensive to the people who remember what that era was like for many Americans.

  7. Lynn is facing an uphill battle to getting a head coaching job. It has nothing to do with his race, the problem is that he’s already taken a job in the worst possible environment. Do you think that Train Wrecks Ryan is preparing him for success? The jills are duping their fans into thinking they are an NFL caliber team. the city of barfalo is where careers go to die, not start.

  8. Maybe this rule was necessary decades ago, but the environment now is different. Even if it weren’t, I think being forced to interview someone makes an employer less likely to hire him. I can’t blame the teams, because they’re being forced to do it too. I don’t see why it’s so concerning what color a coach’s skin is.

You can attach whatever reasoning you want to behind it, but at the end of the day, you’re assigning value to someone based on something he can’t control. How are you supposed to treat people equally while you’re doing that?

You ever look at yourself in the mirror and think, yeah, I really am a turd. On every single Bills thread under 4 ID’s……..I saw one last week where this one answered your main one Joetoronto, like we don’t know it’s you. Like you were trying to trick us. We know you are not that smart, but you do know that there is a way to figure that out right?
