AFC playoff picture: Patriots clinch a bye, again

Getty Images

The AFC East belongs to the Patriots, again.

For the eight consecutive year, the Patriots have won their division, and for the seventh consecutive year, the Patriots have earned a first-round playoff bye. That’s an extraordinary run of dominance, something unmatched in NFL history. Although the Patriots won three of their four Super Bowls from 2001 to 2004, they’ve actually been a more consistently great team over the last seven years than they were early in the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era.

So the Patriots will be major players in the AFC playoffs again. Here’s how the rest of the playoff picture shapes up:

LEADERS
1. Patriots (12-2): The clear favorites to get to the Super Bowl again.

2. Raiders (11-3): Clinched a playoff berth today.

3. Steelers (9-5): Pittsburgh leads the AFC North heading into the big Christmas game against Baltimore.

4. Texans (8-6): Despite Brock Osweiler playing so badly he was benched, Houston remains atop the AFC South.

5. Chiefs (10-4): The loss to the Titans was costly, dropping Kansas City from a first-round bye to a wild card team.

6. Dolphins (9-5): Miami is looking like a playoff team, even without Ryan Tannehill.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. Ravens (8-6): If they beat the Steelers on Christmas Day, the Ravens own the head-to-head tiebreaker and would lead the AFC North.

8. Titans (8-6): Tennessee still controls its destiny, thanks to a Week 17 meeting with Houston.

9. Broncos (8-6): The defending champions now look like long shots to make the playoffs.

10. Bills (7-7): Buffalo isn’t totally out of it, but it’s hard to envision a scenario in which the Bills make the playoffs.

11. Colts (7-7): They looked good in a beatdown of the Vikings, but it will be hard to catch the Titans and Texans.

  1. Miami is looking like a one and done playoff team. Thanks to NE taking out Denver today the real playoff teams won’t have to worry about facing that D. A healthy Pitt will get a cupcake wildcard game against the little fish so alittle thanks from the Stealers fans is in order as well.

If the #1 seed throughout gets clinched next week the Pats starters may not even make the trip. Then the fish can win their annual SB again!

  2. They cheated hard this year. Full of stealing other team signals, pick plays.

They will choke as usual in the postseason in their first game. If they get a real opponent, unlike their division opponents besides Miami

They are one in the same.

  4. Despite being granted unlimited power under the CBA, and spending millions of dollars and virtually all of his time scheming against the Pats, Lying Roger can’t keep New England out of the playoffs.

  5. Who doesn’t annually want to play in that division. Miami, one playoff appearance, and Buffalo one playoff appearance since TB and BB arrived on the scene.

Nice work if you can get it. Heck, the Pat’s should have 15 Lombardi’s already with that annual playoff pass.

Agreed. And it wont be the Steelers.

  9. The Patriots have won 13 of the last 14 AFC East Titles. Which year did they not win the title? 2008, the year Brady was hurt. And some people wonder why the NFL wanted so bad to make him sit for 4 games. So funny that their attempt at parity failed.

  10. Funny that we keep talking about the AFC East being an easy division. Especially from ratbird and Stealer fans. Didn’t the Stealers give up 30 points to the fish and lose in an embarrassing fashion. And the Rat birds? Well they lost to the jests. Nuff said.

Your little north would be an even bigger cake walk for Brady

  11. Expect anything different? 🙂

It ain’t arrogance if it’s the truth cupcakes.

    🙂

  12. Brady & Belichick have an .828 winning % against the AFCN including going 4-0 this year. If the Pats played in that sorry division this would have been over sooner.

  13. Just look at all the patsanoia up in here from the wee 12’s.
All those little bro’s are still mad. Get in line, the stealers and faiders fans have been madder for longer

  14. As more and more people have to admit ‘deflategate’ was a farce, it becomes more and more amusing(pathetic) to watch the dwindling number of haters keep flailing away at nothing. If the Pats are fortunate and good enough to get back to the Super Bowl, I’ll bet the majority of America is rooting for them. And their greatness warrants it.

  15. Watches Patriots go 4-0 against AFC North and hold defending SB champs to 3 points at home, claims Patriots are product of soft division.

  16. “The real question is how many ways did the Pats cheat this year and how long until caught again”

The same guys also say thing like “NE doesn’t want to play Pittsburgh in the playoffs”. Are you kidding me? They’d love it. Frankly Miami might give them a tougher game in the playoffs than any Tomlin coached team would.

  20. The best team over the longest period of time in NFL history defines the greatest coach and qb in NFL history. So much for parity despite all the crooked schemes to stop them.

  21. When was the last time neither super bowl team from the previous year failed to make the playoffs?? Could happen this year.
    Go Pats!!

  22. I still think the Chiefs will win the AFC West, but honestly I kind of hope the Raiders win it the build up and fighting during the game would be like a game from 20 or 30 years ago. It would be epic.

  23. The Patriots are indeed the clear favorites to win the AFC especially since Manning has retired. Last season in AFCC game, Manning scored twice as many TDs as Brady and the Patriots missed the SB.

  24. with manning awful last year and on peds approved by goodel and elway’s cap cheating now curtailed in 2016, the pats have a clear path, unless goodell cheats wildly down the stretch again.

  25. Anything can happen in a lose and you go home game.
Favorites are favorites until you are not.
As a Boston fan either Pedro on Schilling on the mound or Ortiz at bat
Last shot either John Hondo Havlicek or Larry Bird
Either Esposito or Thomas in the net
As long as number 12 is QB who ever is open .Since no Gronk just spin the dial and pick a number.
Do I think a strong defense such as the Ravens, Steelers,Denver etc can get to Brady –absolutely
However ,the Pats chances are better most of the other 31 teams .
Giants could meet the Pats in Houston a couple of plays could me to the difference .Heck a hot team that has to travel and beat iron to get the big dance could beat them.
Just the thought of Brady getting to his seventh SB
is something special. The haters should just realize that feat has never been done .To Get His fifth ring
would be amazing .Stop the hate and just admit to yourselves that when all is said and done number 12 will be best there ever was.

  26. The Steelers are the only team in the AFC with the pedigree to upset the Pats in the playoffs.

  27. And the distance between Peyton and Brady just gets a little further apart every game Brady plays and wins. Brady is leaving old choke artist, playoff underachiever in the dust. Imagine if he wins the MVP? LOL

    ++++++++++++++

They should be. Any D that has guys as dirty as the knee hunter, Talib, Marshall and Stewart (just to name a few) on it should concern any team that has a legit offense that plays them. For teams like NE, Oakland and Pittsburgh that’s something to keep in mind maybe less so for a team with an anemic offense like KC or Houston that can only hope their D’s can carry them.

  30. Well I know what me and my fellow Patriots fans believe. We play with integrity and never break the rules. We only have one superbowl in ten years but yet we still dominate in our minds.

  31. Those who need to delude themselves that the Laws of Physics apply to footballs in Pittsburgh but not New England is truly missing out on appreciating that greatest QB – as well as Coach – of all time

And for that matter, all “Spygate” was, was a new 2006 rule being applied in the first half of the first game of the 2007 season. It’s just that many fans are ignorant about the fact that every play and play call is filmed during a game.

Though like “11 of 12 balls were underinflated” most people believe Spygate Myth to be Fact – such things as “spying on the Rams in the Super Bowl” which of course never happened – pure fiction. Yet some cite it as fact.

There’s no accounting for an uneducated jealous fan I guess but they are truly missing out on appreciating some of the greatest football we’ll ever see in our lifetimes!

Maybe the Ravens if they get in will give Patriots problems. Manning teams have been the only teams to consistently stop the Patriots in the playoffs during the Belichick era. Since he has retired, the path to the SB is clear for the Patriots. Of course we have to hope the other Manning won’t be there to spoil it.

Listen, I am a very biased Steelers fan, and I love my Black and Gold, you seriously can not bring up something that literally happened 5 years ago. Both the Patriots and Steelers are completely different teams from 5 years ago. Yes, Tebow happened, but again, that was 5 years ago.

The Patriots are, without a doubt, the team to beat in the AFC. Would I love to see the Steelers beat the Patriots? Of course I would. Do I think they could? Crazy stuff happens, and on any given, anything can happen. Will the Steelers beat the Patriots if they meet in the playoffs? Probably not. But this Steelers team is much different than the Steelers team from 5 years ago, as is your Patriots team.

Please tell me you are not that arrogant to at least acknowledge that it’s a different team from SIX years ago lol. Just to prove my point, only 2 players on that whole defensive squad that took the field against Tebow is Lawrence Timmons and James Harrison lol. And it’s fair to say that Tim Tebow versed an old retiring defence that once dominated the NFL for th entire ’00’ decade. Anyways enjoy living life without logic and a heavy dose of arrogance.

Pitt was healthy last time they met. Not sure how you can forget a no name rb rushing over 200 yards on you.

  42. “Which year did they not win the title? 2008, the year Brady was hurt”

Are you saing not having brady made them miss the playoffs?

Back that up with facts? Pats went 11-5. Any time bradys isnt in the game, his backup picks up like he was the starter all along.

  43. BB is evil. The Broncos’ players were fighting each other because they can’t figure out why they lost. They held Brady to 16 points and they still lost. They said it’s not supposed to happen if you held Brady down by that many points. They are hilarious! BB just took away their chance to defend since that is their strength.

  44. This time of year, it’s one game at a time. if Miami wins next week and others lose we have a better shot. In the playoffs, it’s one game a week. Beat that team one time, you move on.
Miami has split with the pats the last 3 years. Brady is 6-7 in Miami, and we play each other in the final game. Buffalo is winnable, and so is against the pats. Brady, meet Wake and Suh.

  45. Some keep going on about how easy it is for NE in the AFCE. Lets just say this, the rest of you dont do a great job in beating them down either. If they were in your divisions they would be cruising home to another divisional also. Oh by the way thanks for beating Denver, NE, we appreciate all you are doing for us down in south Florida.

This includes putting the most anti-patriot refs in the most important games. Hochuli for one. We all saw what he did last week with the Ravens’ game. No more illegal formations to block kicks. On Christmas Day the cheating Steelers shouldn’t even bother showing up. The Ravens own them too. Those balls will no doubt be deflated as always but the Ravens just like earlier in the season will win with ease.

What does that even mean, loopholes in the rule book? Spirit of fair play? Like they should show the other team their play book. Not use a hard count? No fake handoffs?

If it isn’t written, it’s not a rule. we already know the NFL designs the rules to be ambiguous either intentionally or by incompetence. This way they have the latitude to levy fines to one team but not another for the EXACT SAME OFFENSE.

NE’s overall winning % OUTSIDE the AFCE, since Bill and Tom arrived, is virtually identical to their winning % inside the AFCE.

You might want to learn the history of your own team. The Fins have the longest and most storied record of cheating in NFL history.

The Fins actually started cheating the other teams before the merger was even finished by negotiating and signing Shulacheat to a contract while he was still under contract to Baltimore, which is why they were docked their 1st round pick in the very first merger draft.

Shula went on to cheat in so many different, well documented ways I’ll leave it for you to do a google search on them. Miami’s entire legacy is that of cheating and failure.

  70. Remember when the Dolphins were “bottom feeders”. Then they get a new coach, so no one thought there was any chance at all. But now there they sit, currently in the playoffs. As we all know, all you have to do is get in and then, one never knows, do one.

The Steelers are the only team in the AFC with the pedigree to upset the Pats in the playoffs.

Sorry, honey, you can’t get those 70s Steelers teams into the games, you’re stuck with your 2016 team.

Your version of “hard work and innovation” is what the rest of the world calls fraud. Is a cheating husband an innovator? LOL at pats*

LOL this comment makes no sense. Your example makes no sense and isn’t remotely applicable.

Remember when the Dolphins beat the patriots last year and they lost home field advantage?

Remember when the Pats were decimated with injuries on both sides of the ball and Belichick decided to mail that game in to save the injured players for the playoffs? Chippy why do you bother? There is NO comparison between the fish and the greatest franchise in the NFL. How sorry one must be to revel in regular season games that ended your season.

Still a bit salty about that road loss to Denver I see, ohhh if only you have home field advantage. So what was the excuse the previous 2 years before that when Miami beat them? Your right, there is no comparison. The Pat’s will never have a perfect season and the Dolphins SB’s don’t have asterisks next to them. You can cry all you want but the fact is whenever people talk about the Pat’s, they will always be considered cheaters. ****

Stop living in the past, like Mercury Morris. Last time fins even made it to AFCCG was in ’92, get back to me when they do something interesting.

  75. The Steelers are capable of beating any team in the AFC. Besides the Pats, you can’t really say that about the rest of the afc teams. I do believe the Pats will go down in the playoffs. They are very beatable.

  76. The Patriots won 8 in a row huh? How many Superbowls did they win again during the last 7 easy AFCE championships? 1 SB! (Lol) Looks like when the Pats play outside the AFCE in the playoffs it’s usually not them holding the Lombardi at the end! Pats will eventually choke, they do have the biggest choke job in Sports history.. lol

The ’04 Red Sox played the Yankees, not the Patriots. Wrong sport, dude.

Ravens looked so bad on Sunday, I think their season is already over.
Steelers just need to show up on Christmas to win.

    ——————————————————-

No, what you saw was the Ravens playing to the level of their competition.

  79. The number one cheater in the NFL is the Broncos. The Patriots is number 15.
Deflategate and Spygate did not give the Patriots advantage and they were sham scandals to cheat the Patriots.

  80. Okay, Pats have only gone 1-2 in the Superbowl in the last 10 years. But they’ve had what, 8 first round byes? That’s a clear dominance of the AFC.

Also the idea that a Seahawk fan, some who roots for a team in a division with 2 of the 3 worst teams in the NFL, is calling the AFC east a bad division is laughable.

They cheated hard this year. Full of stealing other team signals, pick plays.

They will choke as usual in the postseason in their first game. If they get a real opponent, unlike their division opponents besides Miami

The Steelers are 9-5. They have lost to the Dolphins and the Ravens. The Pats both beat of those teams handily. The Steelers squeaked by Cincy and Buffalo, also teams the Pats beat handily. Based on that data, who is “Very Beatable?”

2002 Pats beat Steelers in playoffs at Heinz

We’re not going anywhere til the Hoodie hangs it up. Maybe he’ll decide to come out of retirement and coach your crappie team to a title so show a little respect for these two g.o.a.t.s

Hey man, since numbers mean so much to you lets rewind back to 2007.
    Patriots 16-0
    Giants 9-7

….. We all know how that one turned out 🙂

  85. I guess Patriots’ fans will spend the bye week whining about every infraction committed by every other team and claiming it’s worse than deflating balls or spying on other teams’ signals. Forget that five teams caught the Patriots messing with their headsets, that the Patriots design plays to trick the refs and risk life threatening injuries. Patriots’ fans will STILL sit on the couch sobbing about poor Tom Brady getting suspended when he deliberately destroyed evidence knowing it would lead to him being permanently banned from the NFL. Brady is the Pete Rose of football but the poor fans have been drinking so much Belicheat Kool Aid they’ll never realize it.

  86. The Patriots are the class of the NFL and there is no one close. They are already the greatest dynasty/coach-QB combo in NFL history. Here’s to hoping that they add and 5th and possibly 6th ring to cement their case as the greatest dynasty of all time, even to all you stubborn haters. Bow down everyone and kiss the rings.

Brady is much better than Montana and it’s not even close, don’t make me break out the numbers to back it up.

  87. All this talk of cheating, where is the outrage for the Giant’s? They clearly broke and NFL rule, that actually provides a competitive advantage. Where are the pitchforks folks.

They were able to talk to Eli Manning illegally for as long as they wanted, NFL headsets shut off when there’s 15 seconds left in play clock, the walk talkies never shut off, they can even talk to him during the play if they wanted to.

  88. Steelers almost beat NE with a backup QB. Now there’s no Gronkowski. Looks like trouble for the Pats.
