Aldon Smith’s status remains under review

A social-media post from still-suspended Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith has created a bit of a stir, given the potential implication that Smith has been reinstated following a suspension that has lasted more than 13 months.

Unfortunately for the Raiders and Smith, the potential implication isn’t the actual implication. According to an NFL spokesman, Smith’s status remains under review.

Last week, Smith expressed frustration regarding the absence of a decision regarding whether he’ll be reinstated. The relevant policy seems to require a ruling within 60 days after the application is made; the NFL believes that there is no deadline for making a decision.

For the Raiders, the deadline for Smith having an impact on the field is looming. There are two regular-season games left, and then the postseason.

  1. This guy has had chance, after chance, after chance, and he still has that video of him smoking weed hanging over his head.

  2. This is why these type of suspensions should be the player is automatically re instated if no response from the league is provided within 60 days of submission of the application. This is rediculous. What is the relvance of 60 days in the CBA if the league thinks they can make a decision anytime they want? This isn’t me defending the supreme bone head Aldon Smith…this is me just asking why does the league always has to make everything they do so adversarial?

  3. All you people who cheered Roger’s lies about Brady and hurting the Pats are reaping what you sowed now.

Corrupt Goodell believe he can do anything he wants no matter what the CBA says.

The league has already said it wants the Raiders to stay in Oakland. Davis has said he still intends to move to Vegas. Until Davis plays ball with Goodell and stays right where he is, I doubt Smith will be reinstated. Goodell will hold that extra piece of the puzzle that might let them win in Foxboro over his head until he agrees not to move.

Corruption runs deep in Roger Goodell’s National Integrity League.

  4. So Randy Gregory gets to rejoin the team even though he is still being investigated for another incident which he can be possibly suspended for.
Aldon checks off all the boxes required by the league and still isn’t reinstated.
I see the difference of playing for the Dallas Cowboys and the Oakland Raiders.
Jerrah pads Goodells wallet and gets preferential treatment. Or we can always blame Putin for manipulating the league.

  5. Show of hands all you hypocrites out there who have had your players return from suspension and some cases, returned from incarceration to play again.

Aldon Smith may not deserve another chance, but he deserves a decision.

  6. One way or the other a decision needs to be made so all parties can move forward.

The playoffs are rapidly approaching and the Raiders need to know their options.

If Aldon played for Mara, Kraft or Rooney we wouldn’t be having this problem.

    Another sham by the NFL.

    Carry on.

    Go Raiders

  7. This is Roger Goodell putting his thumb on the scale to affect the level of competition. My guess is this is a favor to Kraft. Keep him out long enough so that he can’t affect a possible Patriots-Raiders matchup in the playoffs. There’s no doubt he plays favorites in this league. It’s truly a black mark on the face of the league and the league office.

  8. Dog killers, dui killers and woman beaters have all been let back into the league. What Aldon did was peanuts compared to those losers
    #FREEALDON

  9. Holding the player and team in limbo when you have had plenty of time to make a decision is pathetic. All of the info is in place to render a decision, one way or the other.
It only serves to extend the narrative that Goodell is a control freak, with no real idea how to make a call.
Doing and saying nothing makes league leadership seem incompetent and clueless after this long.
If that is what Goodel wants everyone to think of the brass running the league, mission accomplished.
Perception is reality, I’m not sure how Goodell can make himself look worse here and on countless other issues.

  10. Maybe look to the 6th Amendment: “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial.”

I know the NFL is a private business, but it’s morally wrong to not make a decision and keep Smith and the Raiders in limbo.

  11. Hey Aldon…Just Sue Baby!!!!(you got nothing to lose at this point)

All you have to do is read Article 39 of the NFL/NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement to realize what they feel substance abuse is. Read Chapter 4 of the ADA and you will know what federal law thinks about about discrimination in the workplace.

Roger doesn’t do favors for Bob Kraft.

Of all of the potential playoff scenarios, a Patriots-Raiders game would surely be at the top of the NFL’s list.

Thats so cute thinking the the Raiders can go into Foxboro and win with or without Smith. Heck there is still a list of things they have to do before they even earn that chance.

And if he is able to act on Floyd before the postseason do we say thats Goodell with his thumb on the scale to favor the Raiders?

  14. This is like a guy serving a prison sentence of, say, 10 years but not being let out for 11 or 12 or more just because the $40 million man is too vindictive and/or lazy to make a decision. Yes ladies and gentlemen, we’re not waiting for some actual action to be taken; we’re waiting for a multi-millionaire to *think* about something he’s had months to think about already.

No he just hangs out at his house every so often for the heck of it…Please share when was the last time Roger was over at Mark Davis house for dinner. Exactly

    Aldon Just Sue Baby!

  16. And here we go again! Poor, poor Smith. He breaks laws, does drugs all the time, but he cant help it. That’s just the way its is. And by golly, he deserves a job. Not just any job but a millions dollar gig. Smith is a good man. He likes to party, crash cars and make videos of him using contraband. And of course, all his problems are not his fault. It’s that evil Goodell. He caused this all to happen.

Please, free Aldono Smith! Dont let the man bring him down because he is an addict that breaks laws and cant stay clean. This dude is a stand up guy and a total team Leader! LMAO!

And then he fines his team a million bucks, takes away draft picks, and suspends his best player all over trumped up charges he lied through his teeth about. Im not sure what your definition is of favors but that was no favor.

  18. so let me get this right …Randy Gregory who failed his third drug test per NFL.com in November is re-instated today and Aldon is not….wow

  19. There seems to be a lot of confusion. Aldon was not suspended for a year. He was banished from the game for a minimum of one year. Two completely different things. The league never has to let him back and they do not have to explain why. Think of it like a prisoner sentenced to one year to life.Aldon is asking for parole after serving the minimum sentence

And that prisoner would receive an answer. The prisoner would be treated with more respect than Aldon or the Raiders have been treated with. If the decision is against Aldon so be it, but at least make a decision so both parties know how to move forward. That is what people are upset about.

And yet Floyd is still allowed to play

    ————————-

Floyd is still pending charges (which are pretty likely). Smith is post sentancing. So thats a pretty key difference.

But still Smith should at least get an answer one way or the other. I agree Goodell is under no obligation to reinstate him now or ever, but to simply not answer is still a poor way to handle things. We are well past any ‘we need to take our time and do it right’ time frame. It begets the question if their are factors other than Aldon Smith at play here.

Typical hypocritical Raider hater but if Aldon was your team I am sure you would be busting down Rogers door to bring him back ha!ha!

  23. Zero failed drug tests proves that video was a hoax. He has been tested st least once a week since being suspended so if that was him smoking a blunt there is no way he has clean tests. Time to follow the agreement and let him play.
