Jack Del Rio on Derek Carr: Obviously it’s a big setback

The Raiders have won each of their last two games, but the postgame response was very different in Week 15 than it was on Saturday.

In Week 15, the Raiders got to celebrate their first playoff berth since 2002 while looking ahead to a shot at clinching the AFC West title and a first-round bye. Quarterback Derek Carr fractured his fibula on Saturday, though, and that made for a far more muted celebration tinged with wistfulness about what Carr’s loss means to their hopes of making noise come the postseason.

For left tackle Donald Penn, postgame musings centered on the fact that linebacker Trent Cole tackled Carr on the play that ended with his injury. Cole was Penn’s man and was able to get to Carr after Penn slipped while initially pushing him past the pocket. Penn said he was “very disappointed in myself,” but coach Jack Del Rio said it will be up to Penn and the rest of the team to step up in support of Matt McGloin.

“Teams have to find a way to pick up and move on,” Del Rio said, via CSNBayArea.com. “We’ll rally around the next guy as best we can. That’s what you do. It’ll be incumbent on the offensive line and the backs to do more. The defense must do more. As a team, pick it up and do more to fill in. Obviously, it’s a big setback.”

As good as Carr has been this season, the team hasn’t won 12 games on the back of one player so Del Rio’s approach is a reasonable one in addition to being the only one available to the Raiders in the wake of Carr’s injury.

  1. Now would be nice to see Aldon Smith reinstated. Mario Edwards made his presence felt against the Colts. That would make the Raider D much better, with an offense that will still be able to move the ball. How many times has a team with game manager Qb and a tough bend but don’t break Defense made a lot of noise in the playoffs ? Of course Carr’s Clutch In The Fourth and last Two minutes of The Half Heroics will be missed. LETS GO BRONCOS BEAT THE CHIEFS!!

  2. Surely even the obnoxious, illusional Raider fans know that Kansas City will be going to the AFC title game…….with or without Carr at QB.
The donkeys will tee off on the frauds next week after the Chiefs handle them tonight.

KC will win the AFC West, get the bye while the Raiders will get bounced by the Steelers.

KC will always own the Raiders, and now they are creating a dynasty

  3. The Raiders should play their rookie 4th round pick Conner Cook, and they won’t skip a beat. Ask Dallas about their rookie fourth round pick that shocked everyone (including the Cowboys). Cook was the best QB in the draft, but just like Dak Prescott, everyone missed on him. Cook is actually better than Carr. People think they can judge QBs before they ever get on the field. How many times do we have to learn that we can’t?

  4. It’s been 15 years, and it’s all down the drain on one play. Still hard to think about. Get better Derek, can’t wait to see how to respond next year

  5. David, i mean Derek Carr did NOT want to face KC and get beat down for a 3rd time this season. Houston, Poe, Hali, Ford and Berry would have done more damage to him than a small fractured leg.
Carr is the softest girl in the league and the fluke Raiders were never going to get past the Chiefs in these playoffs..

    Chiefs 27
    Cowboys 19
    Super Bowl

  6. It’s extremely rare for a backup QB on a playoff caliber team to lead said team to the promised land.

The ’72 Dolphins found out themselves in the AFC TG, when Bob Griese had to save the day after Earl Morrill was ineffective. While the Raiders are obviously more than a one man team, the QB position is the most important one on the field.

Before the season, some folks thought the Denver Broncos would be just fine with untested QBs, and that idea blew up in their faces. Plug and play seldom works in the NFL.

Another issue which needs to be discussed is why Carr was in the game with a 19 point lead and only 11 minutes remaining. If the backup comes in and a fumbled snap leads to a TD, the Raiders could always have put Carr back into the game.

  7. Very sad outcome. I understand that Carr is young, strong, and healthy, but if you see that your ol is losing the battle there is no shame in ducking. QBs like Brady and the Mannings have proved to be durable after all these years because of this ability. The sad part, though, is that the Raiders didn’t need to throw the ball in that stage of the game. They were running over the Colts at ease.

  8. Really a shame. With this and Mariota it takes two exciting young players out of the playoffs that would have made this year stand apart from the last few.

Carr being eliminated makes the Pats a massive favorite for the AFC rep in the Super Bowl. KC and the others quite simply are not on the same level as NE.

  9. Carr and Mariota broke their fibula……

Bad day for both teams bit both will heal nicely and probably will be in the playoffs next season.

  10. Iam not a Raider fan as Iam a life long Chiefs fan but just let me say this to all Raider fans. Iam very sorry to hear this as you guys are having such a super great season. I hate injuries period. The Chiefs are also plagued with “Key” injuries. So again, Iam very sorry to hear this. Merry Christmas to all.

You are delusional son. An Andy Reid coached team will never beat a BB coached team in the postseason……ever.

  12. Its hard to beat a BB “coached” team in the post season, when that BB “coached” team cheats.
As has been proven twice now with forfeited draft picks and record fines.

    KC will EARN its championship.
Every title obtained by BB is UNearned, and are tainted

  13. “Every title obtained by BB is UNearned, and are tainted”

Yes people who don’t understand 5th grade science or that every team steals signals and that it’s not illegal believe that.

You only humiliate yourself and show your lack of understanding of what happened with that comment.

Belichick owns Reid. Reid is the worst clock management coach I’ve ever seen in 50+ years of watching the NFL. He is a good coach but has some serious flaws.

Just a few years ago you Chefs were 0/6 in the AFC West…I find it funny since moving to KS from California how once you leave the KC metro you are more likely to see people wearing Raiders, Cowboys or Steelers gear.

  15. .
I was hoping that the Raiders and Patriots could have met in New England for a replay of the ” tuck rule” game. The Raiders are going to be hard pressed to get deep in the playoffs without their starting QB.
    .

  16. Hi Jack (oopps). Raider Nation wants to know why Carr was playing with 10 minutes left and a 19 point lead? And why was he passing when your ground game gashing the Colts? Oh Jacky Boy, you got se splainin’ to do. Tick tock!

Make sure you have plenty of salt and pepper ready for your meal of crow and whine.

Nobody needs to “cheat” to beat Andy Reid…..he will find a way to beat himself. Chances are KC will never see the Patriots….if they make the playoffs, they will likely lose in the Wild Card round…

  20. Raiders all time record vs the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders will meet for the second time this season and the 107th time in regular season history. In the previous 107 tilts, Kansas City owns a 54-50-2 record. In their only two playoff meetings, the Chiefs have won both including the 1969 AFL Championship game.

Because you already have so many Lombardi’s. The Queefs will never be a dynasty. Just a nasty, no dy. Never win a title. Ever. 0. LOL

  22. @tonebones – we all know you’re a Santa Clara troll, but seriously, how can you possibly jump in here and try to crap on the Raiders, when your historically awful team is about to finish 2-14, and the Raiders already have 12 wins? You just got more thumbs down votes than Billary. Enjoy a few more decades of double-digit losses under the York family.

  23. Makes me sick to see this kid out for the playoffs. Hoping he’ll bounce back next year even better.

Pats are going to walk through the AFC now. Raiders w/Carr might have been interesting but there’s no one else to even challenge them.

For the Chiefs fans crowing on this thread… Please! Your team lost to the Texans and Titans. Nuff said!

  24. AFC Playoff Quarterbacks- Matt McGloin, Tom Savage, Matt Moore and possibly although not likely Trevor Simean. Not exactly a group of playoff caliber qb’s.

  25. Let’s see how this team rally’s around McGloin. He’s a gamer and is tough. I understand making any kind of run in the playoffs will be tough, but these next 3-4 weeks could lay the ground work for the next 10. Derek get well soon and Merry Christmas to all Raider fans.

Trolling again I see. Funny, after last week’s loss to Tennessee, I didn’t see your name out anywhere on PFT. Afraid to come out of your mom’s basement after Chief’s losses?

  28. McGloin is at least 5 times better than Thyroid Taylor and so is the rookie, Cook.

    It’s not over yet.

    One nation, Raider Nation.

  29. If Raiders lose the division and fall to the 5 seed. It’s Tom Savage vs Matt McGloin in the 1st round. Raiders might actually win a playoff game in that scenario. The #2 seed Raiders get The Steelers, lose and head for Las Vegas.

  30. Patriots fan here. Hate seeing any team/player have this happen to them, especially such a good team/player. This is why qb’s are protected, because their loss is so damaging to the product. I know that a potential patriots vs raiders match up has lost a lot of its luster for me.

  31. McGloin had no business playing in big time college football. But he did. He had zero chance of making a roster, nevermind starting a game. But he did. Throwing a TD on his first NFL attempt. 2 TD’s in the first quarter of his first start on a terrible team.

Now he sits with a chance to make himself 10’s of millions of dollars if he can be Jeff Hostetler and manage to take a pretty good team where they need to go.

I know he’s not Carr but this guy has a way of getting things done when everything is stacked against him.

    Let’s go Matt….

Yeah, but we beat the Raiders. Twice.

  33. It’s bad that Carr got hurt and my prayers are with him, but I fully support McGloign leading this team in his absence. Regardless of what happens, what a hell’va season, I can’t be mad. Much love and thanks to the players, coaches, and football staff on the tremendous effort this season.

And one more thing, Merry Christmas to all our haters. Hate on haters.

  34. Remember that season when Derek Carr came back a few weeks after breaking his leg to lead the Raiders to the Super bowl championship….. If anyone can pull that off its D Carr Charles did it after breaking his back in 2002.. missed 2 games, and returned to play CORNERBACK ! He said it hurt like hell, but held up great – Oh and Donald, Love how you play the game, BUT if you are ever beat again, or slip, late in a game with a big lead, just tackle the damn and eat the 10 yards… oh yeah, and tell Rodney to tilt the damn ball more on its read point pre snap. It will bring his low snaps up .

  35. The Raiders are still so far under the cap player bonuses this year made then meet the spending limit….

It won’t be this year now. It might not have been this year even with Carr. But with some FA’s for the D and a good draft. The years of our agony will soon be over…

I usually don’t like moral victories. But a Denver win tonight gives the Raiders the West and a by week. (rest the players) Then I don’t care if Denver beats the Raiders. Nothing would be funnier then those KC Clowns & fat Reid missing the playoffs. That and the Raiders signing E. Berry because KC can’t afford him. We who laugh last laugh best….

And there we have the bandwagon fan of the day! This guy thinks taping is against the rules. Never has been. Spygate was a single camera, just a few feet out of position, for less than half of a single game. The year before it wouldn’t have been an issue. Of course we all know Deflate gate was 100% made up by the Colts, Ravens, and Mike Kensil. The Well$ Report, 2 court hearings, science, and common sense proved that. After all, the Colts footballs were below the legal limit too.

I also seem to recall the curious case of Jeremy Maclin. I seem to recall the loss of 2 draft picks and about $350K in fines.

Spent Christmas eve with a bunch of bandwagon patriots fans like yourself. They all clapped and high fived each other when carr went down just like you did. And seeing that your only football related injury was a blister on your thumb from playing madden it’s about what i’d expect from you.

  38. So funny how the delusional Raider fans think the Afc rep for Super Bowl is between Oakland and New England.

The Raiders cant beat KC (0-2 this season), how in the heck can they get to the Pats?

Face it, this is between the 2 big dogs, KC and NE.
Oakland lucked and fluked its way to 6 wins it didnt deserve, and was clearly dominated both times KC came calling on national TV.

    Chiefs own the Raiders.
    Chiefs will dominate Tom Brady

Just accept it. It is fact
