Vikings launch damage control over defensive back mutiny

Getty Images

After Sunday’s season-killing loss to the Packers, it was regarded as true and accurate that the stunning defiance of the defensive game plan by the Minnesota defensive backs lasted for the entire first half. There was no attempt by the team to refute that account, which appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and it became a given that cornerback Xavier Rhodes refused to adhere to the assignment to follow Packers receiver Jordy Nelson wherever he went.

The Vikings are now saying otherwise, via a leak from a “well-placed Vikings source” to ESPN.

Specifically, the Vikings contend that, as soon as the initial defensive series ended, coach Mike Zimmer addressed the players, and they “situation was corrected.” The leaker also contends that Zimmer didn’t put a timeline on the mutiny, and that the situation got “blown out of proportion” by the media.

Of course, if the approach changed after the first series, the original plan didn’t work. Nelson caught seven passes for 145 yards in the first two quarters. In the second half, Nelson had two catches for nine yards.

If it’s true that the mutiny ended after only one defensive series, why are the Vikings leaking it to ESPN? Why not issue a statement with quotes from Zimmer or defensive coordinator George Edwards or any of the players involved? If it’s not true that the mutiny was ended after only one series, the perception will linger (and, given what eventually could be exposed as a clumsy attempt at a coverup, intensify) that Zimmer and his staff inexplicably failed to get the situation under control until intermission.

The all-22 tape of the game, which soon will be available via the NFL’s excellent online game replay service, will resolve whether Rhodes did was he was told in the first 30 minutes of the game. It won’t resolve the team’s curious decision to opt for anonymous leaks instead of a straightforward, on-the-record explanation.

Regardless of the truth regarding all of this, it’s obvious that yet another problem has been thrown onto the ever-growing pile that has killed one season in Minnesota, and that could loom over the next one and possibly beyond.

  1. Why is ESPN always the dupe that people want to leak lies to? That shouldn’t be a legacy they court. Their part in this just reinforces their role in other false narratives that were maliciously spread then never corrected.

It’s why I don’t turn their network on or go to their site. They should just rename themselves PRAVDA.

  2. Want to make a point – sit the offenders and let the backups get some experience. Win or lose doesn’t matter at this point.

You might want to go so far as to deactivate the instigator.

  3. “It’s a mutiny.”

Reporters: “Okay we’ll report it as a mutiny.”

    “No no, you’re misquoting me.”

  4. This is the problem that is created when players play for management and not the head coach.

And now Zimmer can’t do what needs to be done which is send all 3 packing.

Fire Slick, give Zim one more chance and move on.

  5. Way too many weird incidents like this (I.e. The Josh Freeman interview whispering, AP suspension, Norv, Leslie, CP, Blair) have happened under Ricks watch.

And now he leaks this to the media thinking it will protect his coach and his players.

    Weird thinking.

  6. Not buying it. Something’s gotta give. Zim or Spielman (or both). We just gave them $1B for a stadium. Not acceptable.

  7. “Xavier, why aren’t you sticking to the game plan? Are you trying to get me fired?”

    “Um, YES!”

“We may lose the game too”

“Ok coach, we’re all good now, right?”

  8. Might have been better to say they did it for the whole first half. That would give them a reason as to why Jordy was open all the time. Now it looks like neither strategy worked.

  9. These Vikings sound like Hillary and the Democrats…..Point fingers and blame each other, blame everything you can but yourself…..Face facts, the Packets are the better team, have been the better team, and will be the better team. You flat out had it handed to you…..Aaron Rodgers, that you all said was in decline, a has been, had a 136 rating, accounted for five touchdowns and carved up your vaunted Zimmer defense….Live with that and have a nice vacation, handed to you by the Green Bay Packers.

  10. Vikings trolls here on PFT need to do some damage control of their own given the ridiculous claims they put forward all season about his sorry excuse for a team and their big brother to the east. Truly a case of thone who say do not know. Never truer than this year.

  11. Much ado about nothing. Did you ever consider the real reason that Jordy only had 2 catches in the 2nd half is because it was a blow out and the Packers were up by 25?

Whatever the Vikings were doing in the first half clearly wasn’t working as Rodgers threw 3 TD passes, two of them to Jordy. After the Colt’s game the previous week, the only conclusion I can come to is that the Vikings were just being the Vikings, perennial losers for 55 straight seasons putting a Christmas bow on their lost season and officially knocking themselves out of a playoff spot.

How hard is this to figure out?

  12. calm down……….

The decline of Aaron Rodgers. We told you it was here and the Packer homers denied it. Now the implosion when he can no longer hold up the team.

Don’t be mad at Aaron, age catches up with everyone and there’s nothing he can do about it.

Perhaps your assessment was a tad askew… Merry Xmas

  14. Suspend and fine all three for the final game. Newman and Munnerlyn are free agents after this season. Let them go. Good luck getting a big contract after this incident.

Funny, Packers think they’re back in the playoff hunt. Well, it’s just too late if they didn’t get blow out and got embarrassed by the Colts and Cowboys.
They could but too late cuz they’re going to lose next week. Well, there’s always next week and the week after that.
Oh wait, they’re afraid to play the Vikings bc they always lose they Zimmer’s defense.

Guys, fellas, where are you? Ariani? Hello???

  16. Too Late to put a positive spin on this, the truth is already out. If there was an award for the most dysfunctional franchise, the Vikings would be perennial champions. The long history of dysfunction for this franchise goes on and on no matter who the coach is.

  17. Zimmer is the best coach the Vikings have had in a long, long time. With that said, someone needs to put the pressure on him as to how he has absolutely no influence or control over what goes on on the offensive side of the ball. Absolutely inexcusable for a head coach, especially when your offense is consistently ranked in the bottom 10, at best. He seemingly doesn’t care, or is completely oblivious to offensive football.

    ———

If ESPN and CNN are all lies and propaganda the where do you go for your news with integrity? FOX? Hahahaha

  19. Why is it that when a coach from the Vikings gets an extension as of late, something CRAZY happens, during the next season, causing their job become in jeopardy or lost?

Winning cures everything, and the Vikings prove that losing can cause team become unglued. The reason, they are doing this, is because everyone wants to know why the team, didn’t call a timeout or fix it, during an offensive series, or bench someone.

While there may be coaches out there better than Zimmer, in booths and behind desks, I can’t imagine a Coughlin, Rex Ryan, Gus Bradley, or Norval Turner, doing better, and I don’t know why a coach would want to go coach a group of players that don’t have to listen and do what they want.

  20. The release of this information is just another mistake by the GM, Rick Spielman. As long as he is running the team, in other words he is picking the players, judging talent, and selecting the coaching staff, then the Vikings will never win a Super Bowl. He has been released from Detroit, Miami, Chicago due to poor team performance.
Hey Wifts, it is time to replace him with a manager who is an excellent judge of talent and start re-building this team.

  21. This team has systematically quit on its coach.

It started with the O-line in Philly and after Zimmy, in his infinite “hard nosed” wisdom, called them out in the press it all spiraled out of control.

I’m guessing Spielman will ax Zimmy in hopes of saving his own job. It will be interesting to see where it goes from there.

  22. ESPN and most media, including pft, are political and Liberal. All owned and operated by left wing idealogues.

Thank goodness for FOX news. The only truth out there.

Countdown to liberal hate rebuttal in 3,2,1…

  23. So now the Coaches and front office are lying to the fans and the press… I tend to believe what comes from the players mouth, not what was contrived in the back office after the fact. Terrible organization…. now I know why they welcomed a child abuser back with open arms. Karma… spent 15+ million over two years and he has given you less than 200 yards and two fumbles.

  24. There is no doubt Zimmer is a good D coordinator, but with what we’re seeing and now three years in maybe not so good a head coach……After three years in the Vikings are a 500 team. Everyone wondered after the 5-0 start why this guy wasn’t a head coach sooner……Maybe tis 2-8 stretch. He’s a hot head, throws players under the bus, had his offensive coordinator resign mid season……

  25. If Newman allowed two TDs by Nelson obviously he was going against the plan for more than 1 series.
Sounds like someone is trying to save face. This is why unnamed sources are bad. They don’t have to answer questions they just spout a narrative that could be totally false. Could what he meant by corrected is taken care of and it was the coach telling Newman to go with the plan?

Note: Vikings CB Terence Newman nominated for NFL Sportsmanship Award

  26. “he has absolutely no influence or control over what goes on on the offensive side of the ball.”

Doesn’t sound like he has much control over the defensive side of the ball either. They wont even play his defense.

Early in the broadcast, they said something like because of the plane incident the Vikings did not get to their hotel until 10:45 pm, so Zimmer couldn’t talk to the team until just before kickoff. Really? how many hours does he need to prepare?

If Zimmer remains the head coach it proves the Vikings need a new owner to have a shot at being relevant.

  27. The Vikings went 5-0, then had a bye in week 6. The mutiny began in week 7, when the Vikings lost to the Eagles. Zimmer called some of the players “soft” and questioned their work ethic. From that point on, they looked like a totally different team.

I believe many of these guys objected to something Zimmer said, or decided to lay down because of his hard-nosed approach to coaching.

The Vikings either need some players who’ll play for a drill-instructor-type coach, or Zim needs to figure out out to adjust his methods.

  28. It’s not like we didn’t know the Vikings were pretenders months ago, but wow! Nobody circles the wagons, lights them on fire and shoots the horses like the Minnesota Vikings!

If he’s oblivious to the offensive side what does that make Spielman, who between injuries and poor drafting has lead to the offense lacking talent and depth. Maybe some of it was Zimmer trying to build a great young defense which he did have success, but now not only does Theodore have to come back from a tough injury, he also has to learn a new offense (which he did VERY well in his 1st year with Norv). Spielman who didn’t invest in the Oline, and whiffing on WRs in the first round.

  34. The pay no attention to the white boy wide receiver scheme died in the late 90’s. Since the days of Ed McCaffrey and Wayne Chrebet. Thielen and Nelson shattered all single game Caucasian receiving records saturday. In all seriousness, i find it funny that Jordy Nelson still gets disrespected by opposing secondaries. He’s one of the league’s best big play receivers and leads the league in td’s. Ignore him at your own peril.

Packer Fan: The Packers just destroyed your Vikings.

Leatherface: Viking defense has been horrid since week 6 or 7.. not much to crow about

  36. Congratulations Vikings on an astounding third place finish. You have been talking all year about how the Pack would steal third place from you, but you managed to pull it off.

I mean it cost you two draft picks, 1.5M in dead money for a kicker so someone else could miss the extra points, and the reputation of a once-respected Defensive Coordinator…….. but Third Place! We can’t take that from ya….

  37. The entire organization, city, fans are all pathetic.
Case in point, yesterday my flight through Minneapolis to Appleton was delayed, so I got to the Delta wing of the airport during the game. I walked a long ways in both directions, but there were only 2 gates with TVs and they were both showing NE/NYJ! I asked an attendant why the Vikings game wasn’t on and he said “That’s not how we do it here”. There was an Italian restaurant with 2 TVs showing the Packers win, but in general, people didn’t seem to care about their team. I saw hundreds of people with Packers shirts on, only a couple with Vikings. Keep in mind – this was in their home city during a game. Just unbelievable.

  38. Stop with the “they held Jordy Nelson to 2 catches in the 2nd half” nonsense …. Packers were up by 25 which leads to not really trying anymore at that point, Rodgers was gone for most of 4th quarter and the Vikings defense was getting beat consistently by the last wr on the Packers depth chart / roster, Allison, an undrafted rookie ….try the next lame excuse

  39. “and they situation was corrected…”

Again you can’t put correct words to paper and people are left to extrapolate whatever they can out of said words…media manipulation at its’ finest.

  40. @djvh2 try downloading the delta app so you get notifications when your flight leaves, then find one of many bars in MSP and watch the game. I understand you are going back to Wisconsin where you don’t have to think much to get yourself through these traumatic situations. Feel free to consult me for traveling needs when out are out of your state everyone does not want to visit.

  41. “We just gave them $1B for a stadium. Not acceptable.”

The Vikes are a fine example of why no city or state should ever give an NFL team a single dime again.

They con and extort this money from the taxpayers and then typically deliver and abysmal product in exchange.

  42. Cut the players leading the revolt and replace them with next years 1st and 4th round draft pick…….wait a minute, never mind.

  43. A player should not ever disregard the coach’s game plan. Not even for 1 play, much less a series or a half. Any player not playing the game scheme is working against his team. He should be benched or sent to the locker room. Then fired immediately after the game. Let him find his own way home.

There appears to be a lot more things wrong with this team than meets the eye. They are an embarrassment to themselves, their team and their fans.

  44. Building new or improving an existing stadium isn’t necessarily about the product on the field.
Provided it’s done with restraint and a balanced plan, it can be quite beneficial in a myriad of ways.

Green Bay’s stadium improvements proved to be a huge success when you factor in the millions of dollars the team draws to the area.
As well as the tourism $$$ that is generated every year.

It provides additional money for the bars, restaurants, hotels and casino, all of which adds taxes to the coffers to build parks, schools and road improvements.
Green Bays success financially, have allowed the team to use corporate funds to pay for additional improvements, while funding almost all of the TitleTown District they are currently building.
It has been a great snowballing effect. But it all starts with a great plan.

Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture than just a simple knee jerk reaction to giving handouts to Billionaires.

  45. All you jokers crack me up. The coach isnt going anywhere. Seem to recall Packers fans calling for McCarthy’s head in the fist half of the season when things werent going so well.

  46. Well, this is a bad situation. If you like the coach, cut the offending players. If you like the players, fire the coach. Not sure how you can continue this process if players know they can do this stuff without serious consequences

  47. All anyone has to do is look at the game logs. Nelson scored on the 2nd and 5th series. Rhodes gets noted next to Nelson in the second half. Nelson was tackled in the 1st series by Newman, the 3rd series and 5th series by a player other than Newman or Rhodes.

  48. Well now, maybe we should wait a minute. Being retired military I am against mutiny, so for that, there should be some people getting in trouble. That being said, I think we can all agree that none of the viking DB’s can cover Nelson as his knee continues to heal, so no harm done in not following the coach’s game plan.

  49. There is a reason why Zimmer never got a head coaching gig despite praise for his abilities as a defensive coordinator.

I guess now we know why. He’s a hot-headed egomaniac who airs the teams dirty laundry in public. He throws his players and fellow coaches (see: Norv Turner) under the bus to deflect blame from himself and his own massive ego.

    You forgot the Lions!

  51. I love how everyone is “sleuthing” the meteoric collapse of the Vikings.

People who understand football knew that once Kalil and Berger went down, they became the 32nd-best offensive line in the NFL. The 5-0 team – like ostensibly every team except Dallas and New England this year – wasn’t good.

When you put the season in the context of those injuries – as well as the injuries to Rhodes/Floyd/Peterson/Smith/Diggs – it’s a testament to Spielman and Zim that this team was even competitive.

If anyone’s job should be in jeopardy, it should be Shurmur, though he was too far into the season to rewrite the bland playbook.

Sometimes, where there’s smoke, there is fire.

In this case, Zim is still a great coach who most of the players love, and Spielman can only bring in so much depth to account for injuries.

  52. No reason to trust any unnamed sources. Watch the tape. Either Rhodes started shadowing Nelson after the first series or he didn’t.

On another Vikings related note- boy, that offense sure did start running like a well oiled machine once Zimmer pushed one of the most well respected offensive coordinators in the league out. Right? No? Never mind.

  53. Jesus! Zimmer is the best thing to happen to the Vikings in years.

If he is to blame for anything, it’s for bringing in too many ex-head coaches to fill his staff. He needs to replace Sparano and rebuild the offensive line as soon as the season ends.

He then needs to decide if Shumur is the right person to kick start this offense.

Apart from that, he just has to decide if Peterson remains with the team. Bradford should remain unless Bridgewater is completely ready to play.

  54. Wow, belichek misses a lot for someone they call a genius. He knew nothing about deflate gate and he had no idea about Floyd’s BAL. Shouldn’t that have been something you look into prior to claiming him off waivers? Obviously Bill is not doing his job.

    ______________

He is young in his HC days, and he is coaching a pretty young team, so he needs to be a leader in different ways. unlike Belichek whom has the benefit of quality leaders on the roster. he tried to jolt players that are going to be be the future of that team, trying to get them to wake up, because of the lack of leadership in the locker room.

There CLEARLY isn’t one, because if there was a leader they would NOT have let this go down, the saddest part is the guy that seems to have his finger prints all over it is someone that Zimmer clearly trusted and liked enough to bring to Minnesota after his Cinci days were done, and seemed like he was SPECIFICALLY brought in to help other first round draft picks that play CB in the NFL.

I am sure Vets like Greenway and Newman got sick of Zimmer’s message, but I don’t feel it was intended for them, and they should have known, being the Vets they are, but if Zimmer was TRULY as bad and unbearable, why would Newman rejoin him in Minnesota?

  58. I think Zimmer miscalculated. His throwing players under the bus in public has lost a lot of these players. These are professional football players who make a LOT of money. They don’t appreciate being called out in the media by a coach who supposedly has their back. Keep it in the locker room Zim.
When you lose the team you’ll lose your job.

  59. The Vikings are Mr. October times 53.

I warned all you Vikings back in October not to count your chickens before they hatched. In the Vikings case, it’s more like turkeys, though.

Packers fans everywhere are happy that they have the division if they beat the Lions next week. Aaron Rodgers said he felt they were good enough to run the table and no one believed him, especially Vikings fans.
And the Packers can make the playoffs if the Giants beat the Redskins, too.

Maybe this is a lesson for all you Vikings fans. Humility is a wonderful thing, especially when you are a winner. Maybe some day the Vikings will find out what it’s actually like to be winners. But for now, they can just watch from the sidelines as usual as the Packers work toward the playoffs.

Going forward, your team has a problem. What do they do at QB? Do they start Bradford again or do they hand the keys back to Bridgewater?
The good news is they will not have Adrian Peterson going forward, so they will get out from under that stain.
I feel sorry for you Vikings fans, in a way. Because you’re always chasing the Packers and now the Lions are better than you are, too. And the Bears are on your heels.

    ________

What do you think happens to teams that go 2 and 8 after starting 5 and 0 it’s tough for them to lock up playoff spot. GB fans had to listen the Vikings sqwuak since a year ago when they got that division title ALL off season about Treadwell being great and the revamped line into the regular season starting off great with the defense. Now your left with that tone of “well you didn’t do anything either yet” QBS a diva….

There is a chance GB may miss the playoffs it there is NO chance of the Vikings making it. The Vikings brought this up on themselves by not doing their jobs.

So if anybody needs to be called out about how they are acting this time of the season I recommend the guys being paid big bucks that HELPED GB win and end the Vikings chance at the post season.

  61. This is the problem with coaches like Zimmer. When winning players tolerate it but when losing they are quick to jump ship or complain and fracture the locker room.

I say the vikes should keep Zimmer but ship Rhodes to the Lions for a conditional pick bc those 2 won’t be able to work together anymore. Rhodes and slay would be a nice combo.

  62. Those players should be congratulated on how well they proved their coach correct on his call by defying him and doing their own failed thing. it wasnt mutiny at all,it was just proving why players need good coaches telling them what to do.people should stick to the area they are good at,but like Trump they dont.

  68. Like all teams – the Vikings have coaches “upstairs” in the ‘press box’, and also down on the sideline. It shouldn’t have taken even two series to notice the defensive backs weren’t following the game plan.

Why wait until half-time to address it? Once the Packers score – the Viking defenders are sitting on the sidelines .. and no one addressed this with them? Why not make adjustments immediately?

What kind of coaching staff do they have? Why spend an entire half watching your DB’s get toasted, do nothing and wait until halftime?

Are they that stupid? Or did they just plain get their asses kicked and this is their lame excuse?

Wow the venom spewed from Cheesdiks is incredible . Remember farqwads what goes around comes around . I can’t wait till Dallas sends Erin home for the offseason . Dallas maybe the one team that the refs will call an even game so no Paqueer bias from the Refs to help .

    ——————-

That was utter gibberish. Was it English?

  70. Why do I hear the Monty Python music playing in the background? That’s right, it’s a joke. Look at this whole thing and laugh.

  71. The real question is which team will be the first to win a championship…..the Vikings, Bills or Bengals? The correct answer is “none of these teams will ever win a championship”
    ————————————
    1. The Bills won two AFL championships. Deride it if you want to, but those were two terrific teams.
    2. If we’re going to stick to the Super Bowl era, add the Lions and Browns to the mix.
    3. Of the five teams mentioned, the only one I think will “never” win a title, at least under current ownership, is Cincinnati, where I live. The will to win just isn’t there.

  72. Zimmer needs to say “I wasn’t aware of that” we had planned it this way…then go back to the locker room and kick some a. …This way, it keeps all the little gossipping woman on this site happy.

  73. Can’t we find a better way to describe the Minnesota organization other than dumpster fire? That’s not really being very fair to the Vikings. How about used tire landfill conflagration? Much more accurate.

  74. Of course none of this matters, because the media will come to their own conclusions about anything. Listen to what Zimmer said and what Rhodes said. Print that and move on. And if the media gets their hand on the tape in question take a look at it and report your facts as to how the DB’s played, before coming to conclusions as to how things went down. It’s pretty obvious the Vikings actually won in all phases of the game except the two turn overs that the Packers got points off of. Stupid penalties and poor offensive live play were yet again the downfall of another game. It’s not rocket science. It’s the benefit of winning or the media would be questioning how a walk on player from Minnesota got 200 plus yards receiving and 2 touchdowns…

  75. I’m sorry to report this but I have never heard of such bs as the players rebelling against their coaches and getting away with it. This is NOT going to win championships now is it? So fix this problem right here right now. This Vikings ship is broken big time losing 9 of 11 to end the season. I believe the players didn’t want to follow the game plan and if that isn’t sending a message nothing is.

  76. Geez Louise! Minny was toast before they even stepped on field. It is a QB game. That is, you need a capable QB. Not a superstar, just a capable QB. Bradford throws some mean ball, but he isn’t a game manager or superstar. One second he throws a strike like no other, next play he bombs. He isn’t QB material. Feel bad critiquing him online, but if wants to succeed in this league, he has bulk up and find some grit.

  77. Rick Spielman is the cancer. Period. This guy is as phony as they come…he is living in a bubble of video images of himself winning the super bowl trophy and a congressional medal of honor. If his IQ was even half of the lumens output from his teeth, the Vikings would be fine…but it is not.

  78. I say the vikes should keep Zimmer but ship Rhodes to the Lions for a conditional pick bc those 2 won’t be able to work together anymore. Rhodes and slay would be a nice combo.

    ————-

lol, sure, the Vikings will trade Rhodes to a division rival…you’re a special kind of stupid, aren’t you?

    _______
umm, what? the game was 38-13 before garbage time. How many “phases” do you believe actually exist in football?

  80. I see the Packer fans have a lot of comments on here. Not to worry. They will be sitting with the Vikings fans watching two other teams in the big game. See you on the sidelines cheesers.

  81. Why do I hear the Monty Python music playing in the background? That’s right, it’s a joke. Look at this whole thing and laugh

It’s actually “Benny Hill” music, but it’s still hilarious.

    \\\\\\\\\\

Did you even watch the game? Do you remember the part when the Packers pulled Rodgers after he scored his 6th TD with 9mins still left in the game? Do you know that it is December and not October?

  83. Poor, sad, frustrated, bitter Minnesota fans. We would empathize except for all that trash you were talking all off-season and on up until right this moment. No team’s fans have deserved it as much since the Yankees were up 3-0 and dropped 4 straight to the hated Red Sox.

Enjoy your genius coach, your all-time-great defense, and that first round bye you clinched back on thanksgiving.
