Pete Carroll admits to injury-reporting violation

Getty Images

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll accidentally wandered into quicksand on Monday during a radio appearance, admitting that cornerback Richard Sherman played for much of the year with an MCL injury to his knee that never was disclosed. At his end-of-season press conference conducted later in the day, Carroll admitted to the violation.

“I didn’t realize that we hadn’t even revealed it,” Carroll told reporters, via the transcript generated by the team. “I don’t even remember what game it was, it was somewhere in the middle, he was fine about it, he didn’t miss anything. Same with Russell [Wilson], he was fine about it. I don’t know how they do that, but they did.”

Carroll seems to believe that, because Sherman never missed practice or game time due to the injury, the injury didn’t need to be disclosed.

“He never missed anything, just like Russell [Wilson], Russell never missed anything and Tyler [Lockett], they all had it during the course of the season and they just made it through it,” Carroll said, overlooking the fact that Russell’s MCL injury was properly disclosed. “They never complained, they didn’t want to miss a practice and they basically didn’t miss anything but they were legit, it was legit injury, it showed up and the whole thing. That’s a challenge for anyone. Guys over the league are going through the same thing, our guys just happen to be doing it as well.”

None of this changes the fact that the Seahawks failed to disclose the injury.

“I’m feeling like I screwed that up with not telling you that,” Carroll eventually conceded. “He was OK, so I don’t know, he never missed anything I guess is probably why.”

Still, that’s not the standard. Plenty of players who never miss practice or games nevertheless are disclosed on the injury report. While the league rarely slaps a team for violating the rules, the league rarely has such clear evidence of a violation fall into its lap.

Coupled with a pair of offseason workout violations from the past three offseason, the NFL could be inclined to take potentially significant action against a team that has developed a pattern of breaking the rules. Or, perhaps more accurately given the prevalence of cheating in the NFL, that the Seahawks have developed a pattern of getting caught.

  1. In 2001 or 2002, can’t remember which, the league fined Bill Belichick 25k and the Pats 25k for an injury reporting violation.

That violation was a something like 1/8″ long cut, the equivalent of a shaving cut on a receiver’s hand. Not in any stretch of the imagination was that an “injury” that could have in any way effected the receiver’s performance.

That’s why Belichick has ever since put anyone on the report if they even looked funny, much less had an actual injury.

Here’s a ligament injury that limited Sherman “physically and mentally” according to an earlier article. Should be something like a 50 or 100k fine each to Pete and the team.

  2. $1,000,000 fine for the Seahawks*. Loss of first and fourth round draft picks. 4 game suspension for Sherman as he was more likely than not aware of the situation.

  3. The NFL tries to distance itself from gambling yet the ONLY reason the injury report exists is for the gamblers. Also, no one should be shocked that Pete “I had no idea” Carroll is playing dumb.

  4. Given Carroll’s past rules violations, I’ m guessing there has to be consequences from the league for this one. Personally, I am not sure he is completely coming forth on this one.

  5. St. Peter guilty again, but it doesn’t matter, he just does what he wants……here comes the slap on the wrist.

  6. Did Goodell catch this or was it another team? I mean other teams caught the patriots cheating not the NFL so I can totally see Goodell catching this since him and Kraft are bffs.

  7. I can see his point, if no practice was missed, and by their own medical assessments, Sherman would play, what is there to report? It’s not like Carroll went directly to the parking lot and smashed his cell phone with a tire iron after realizing there might be a controversy here.

  8. Seriously speaking, why is there an injury report anyway? If people don’t play I get it – it affects game planning in a very tangible way. If they do though, it is less clear. It’s about gambling, just like they say in “The Last Boy Scout.” We care more about things like this and excessive celebration than we do about the quality of the game itself. It’s no wonder ratings are down. Get bogged down in technicalities like this instead of the overall competition (let’s try making it so there’s more than 5-6 teams out of 32 that are any good) and the league will die.

  9. If they do get any penalties Pete will probably turn tail and run before they come down…just like he did at USC.

  10. Pete Carroll knew EXACTLY what he was doing by not disclosing Sherman’s injury. We’re talking about Sneaky Pete Carroll here. The guy is a helluva coach but let’s face it, not the most ethical.

  11. Actually your last phrase is the most accurate–the… “Seahawks have developed a pattern of getting caught.”

Carroll could grumble and mumble in an unintelligible manner like Belichick. Instead he actually talks and tells the truth. That’s not particularly a rewarded behavior in the NFL.

  12. Multiple deliberate violations of clear and basic rules about training and player health. Tut, tut. Surely, this becomes an “integrity of the game” issue?

And what about the Giants – committing the capital crime of sticking needles into an opponent’s footballs one week, then using a walkie-talkie to break basic communication rules the next week. Tut, tut. Roger has a busy offseason, what with belatedly suspending Aaron Rodgers and fining the Pack $1M and picks for his admission of a long-running scheme to improperly inflate balls, and the similar belated suspension and $2M fine and multiple picks for the Colts also sticking needles in balls and for not reporting Luck’s ribs…

  13. Cheating Pete and the Seagags go down! How did you go from nobody knowing you where in the NFL five years ago to the most hated team so fast. Must be that lame pasty 12th man and that nerd owner of yours. I dont care how much money he has. Don’t think he could throw a football five feet?

  14. After Roger Goodell and the 31 jealous and petty owners performed so poorly with Deflategate they will try to bury all future real scandals like this under the rug.

Deflategate was made up and bogus but this Seahawks scandal is real and admitted. Lets see how Roger spins this.

  15. I distinctly remember at some point Goodell saying that the injury reports were of the utmost importance to “the integrity of the game”.

Lets see if this is just another example of saying a word he has never understood.

    —–

Spent 26 seconds looking it up. He said “integral to the integrity of the game”.

I don’t think the Seahawks should be penalized really. The injury report is about the integrity of the betting line, not the game, but according to Goodell, the integrity of the game is the most important thing. And these are apparently integral to it.

This has the feel of another Goodell faceplant. I’m looking forward to it.

  16. .
Gamblers were expecting the self proclaimed GOAT, but instead got a gimp. Where’s the issue?
    .

  17. Pete has always been a cheater. Anyone believing he didn’t know this should have been listed is a fool

  18. You have to love, with the state of this maniacal planet that we live on in 2017, that we actually worry so much about reporting injuries in the NFL. This reporting of NFL injuries has no moral implications….it is only there for those who bet on games. Again, where are we really going in 2017 when the “failure to report weekly injuries” in the NFL is something that anyone needs to worry about? The only people who care are the people who bet. That needs to be the story.

  19. So Carroll is bringing his “I didn’t know” defense with him to the NFL after using it at USC.

  20. At least he didn’t use a legitimate NFL football that lost air pressure on a 40 degree night. Now THAT would be a violation. No harm, no foul here.

  21. And yet the redskins and cowboys got railroaded for following the rules of a uncapped year.

  22. He’ll get a stern warning just like the Colts got for failing to report Luck’s broken ribs.

  23. Carroll has a history of bending the rules, whether it’s contact at practices or his ‘program @USC. If it were the Pats, they’d be a furor.

  24. Do any of you Patriot fools understand that playing an injured corner is a deficit (lemme explain, a bad thing) and not a good thing? This isn’t cheating like you folks do. This hurts the Seahawks. And Las Vegas.

  25. Pete “the Cheat” left USC in ethical shambles so why is it so surprising that he would behave like this at the NFL level?

Lower the boom, big fines and lost draft picks are in order, make sure it hurts enough that they never do it again.

  26. The Broncos and the Seahawks are bigger cheats than the Pats. Fans have only focused on the Pats for so long because they have won like thirteen division titles, they’re always in the playoffs, and they have around eleven AFC championship game appearances with Brady.

Up until the end of the 2013 season, the Seahawks had led the league list in PED suspensions. Then, there’s practicegate. I believe that practice one happened twice as well. I hope Goodell comes down hard on the Seahawks for once for breaking yet another rule.

  27. The Patriots (not the Hawks) should have to forfeit a 3rd round pick, just for the heck of it.

  28. I always wondered what the basis was for this requirement. This time I looked it up on the NFL website. Here’s what it says:

“The reporting process is of paramount importance in maintaining the integrity of the game.”

Nuff said. How could I ever of questioned it.

  29. Once a cheater always a cheater….Their window is closed, average team in a bad division.

  30. Still one more important fact….another team admitting to a violation!!!!

Guess who never owns up after the bear trap is clamped down…….

I’ll let the esteemed base here utter the name

  31. The injury report penalizes honesty and benefits those teams with the greatest tendencies to cheat. So why have it in the first place? Why not require teams to report practice participation, in place of this nonsense injury reporting requirement? Neutral observers could easily verify the truthfulness of a team’s daily practice report. Of course, that would be too easy.

  32. Pete is so smart. Teams didn’t know Sherman was vulnerable this year, so nobody ever threw at him. That’s how the Seahawks got the #1 seed with a 14-2 record and are overwhelming favorites to win their 4th consecutive super bowl. Long live Pete’s genius wacky cheating schemes!

  34. (let’s try making it so there’s more than 5-6 teams out of 32 that are any good)
Maybe if we find a way to take a first and fourth round pick and suspend the QB of the most consistent team the last 16 years, that should help.

  35. I’d say take salary cap room, but there is an actual rule here that was broken. That punishment is only for breaking imaginary or implied rules, and only for NFCE opponents of Mara.

Still waiting on justice for their hiding the domestic abuse!

Good point, Judge. Same as when a kid admits to stealing a cookie out of the jar, the punishment is basically nothing. The punishment is much more severe for stealing a cookie and then lying about it after getting caught. The Patriots will never learn that lesson. They just don’t have it in them to come clean, and then they sob like little babies for getting the punishment they deserve.

  37. Before you mental midgets proclaim a team as the “biggest cheaters” do little research. The Seahawks rank #15 tied with the Patriots! The #1 team is the Broncos by a wild margin. 44. Do any of you Patriot fools understand that playing an injured corner is a deficit (lemme explain, a bad thing) and not a good thing? This isn’t cheating like you folks do. This hurts the Seahawks. And Las Vegas.
    ==============================

OK. Enough of this it isn’t important because it only affects gamblers or the injury report isn’t necessary. This goes directly to the perception (or reality) of fixing games for profit. By withholding that information, someone who knew about Sherman’s injury could bet big against Seattle. That is the same as insider information with the stock market. Now who is to say that gambling someone isn’t someone on the team or even Sherman or Carroll himself. If it was ever found out, you would have a Black Sox scandal or Pete Rose scandal. The NFL doesn’t want that. Get it now?

  45. “runningoutofboundsisforgringos says:

Why yes, yes it is, it is a deliberate violation of a rule by a Coach and Team with a habit of deliberately breaking them.
Team Fine, Coach Fine and loss of Draft picks would be suitable.

  46. Oh yeah, and there’s likely a level playing field component where an opponent is not game planning for a player who doesn’t end up playing.

  47. The NFL removed the “probable” designation from the injury report, which it sounds like the category Sherman would fall under…. Or at least that’s what the Seahawks will argue.

  48. What a dumb rule.

“Hey guys, my cornerback is going to play has an MCL injury and isn’t running well. Feel free to hit him.”

    He should have also disclosed:

    “Here is my offensive playbook.”

“We’re running a zone defense on pass plays guys. Adjust accordingly.”

“We’re blitzing all night guys. Be sure to use quick passes and screens on us.”

  49. Jesus….I just don’t care. I’m not sure this is “cheating ” or just Pete being Pete. I’m no hawks fan by any stretch but why do we jump on the “they cheated, he cheated, they’re proven cheaters” any and every time breaks one of the 100 billion NFL policies.

On another entirely different point but why are MLB players allowed to have alcohol fuelled awesome parties after winning any pennant or championship but NFL players get fined for celebrating a good play? Just a random thought

  50. “Due to the recent event of the Seahawks not reporting a serious injury to all-pro cornerback Richard Sherman, I have decided to fine Bill Belichick 250k and take away the Patriots 1st round draft pick for calling Snap Chat ‘Snap Face’.” – Roger Goodell

  52. “Carroll seems to believe that, because Carroll never missed practice or game time due to the injury, the injury didn’t need to be disclosed.”

    ————————-
What? Carroll didn’t miss practice, or Sherman didn’t miss practice? Maybe hire an editor.

But, I thought they got rid of the “probable” designation within the last year or two. If a player doesn’t miss practice and is going to play, and you cannot list them as probable, why would you list them? Carroll is kind of sketchy, but if they don’t miss any practice or games, what is there to list?

  53. The player doesn’t miss any time but you want them on an injury report. Typical hater lawyer.

  54. “If a player doesn’t miss practice and is going to play, and you cannot list them as probable, why would you list them?”

Because the league requires that you do so?

The NFL knows that a huge part of their business comes from gambling. And gamblers have enough influence that they need to know which players are injured, and how much.

Of course, Carroll could just argue that “Hey, the Colts got away with never listed Andrew Luck’s broken ribs.”

  55. People please focus….

This is about the Seahawks breaking the rules which their coach freely admitted today. No need to discuss other teams. We are talking about the integrity of the game and shield here. Commissioner Goodell ……the paying fans await your move on this clear violation. WAITING…….

  56. The Pats are playing in their 6th straight AFCC, but folks keep harping on their punishments like it’s crippled their franchise. Every time someone else has a boo-boo the tears about NE fall. Heck, thank Goodell for getting Brady some rest this year. Every different crime has its own consequences. Stop comparing and complaining.

And now, to quote Dr. King a day too late, I have a dream. If the Pats play well enough this weekend to defeat the Steelers, and then are able to defeat the NFC representative in the Super Bowl, I want the TB Times cartoon to be an image of Belichick, Brady and Kraft holding the Lombardi trophy with Goodell face-planted on the podium. I think that would be priceless.

  58. This is such a joke and the NFL are a bunch of hypocrites. Did they violate a rule? Yes. Should they be penalized? Yes. But please stop talking about the “Integeity of the game”!! This is about the attending integrity of the symbiotic gambling operation between the NFL and Las Vegas.
Integrity of the game my ass. Why should I tell you he has an injured knee or ankle? So players like Suh can twist you leg under the pile?? But please, don’t interfere with someone’s knowledge when they place a bet

  59. Whether he was on the injury list or not, he was going to be playing. This had zero effect ON THE GAME. So patsy’s, please stop trying to compare this to the patriots and saying they should get a 1st and 4th rounder taken. Im worried abotu whats affecting THE GAME, not stuff off the field (as much- unless its a serious crime). Fine these idiots 50K. You’re the high one man. Goodell is closer to Kraft than ANY other owner in the league. Its been WELL documented how good of friends they are. In fact, before that deflategate game, the NIGH BEFORE the game where was goodell? Oh yea, at krafts personal home. The week before that game the pats played the ravens, where was goodell the night before that game? Oh yea, at Krafts personal home. I dont know about you, but goodell certainly isnt chilling at the personal home of my teams owner. Kraft is 1 of 3 owners who decide goodells salary. The patriots are a huge team which draws as much, if not more money than any other team- which NFL income gets goodell extra money- so why attack a team making u money??? There is ZERO to conclude that goodell is ‘out to get kraft’. For spygate, goodell BURNNED evidence to help kraft and knock it down to ‘one case of spying’. He did everything he could for his pal kraft. For deflategate, there was too much and the deflated balls were clear evidence. No matter how much he likes kraft, he HAD to act and put down a stern punishment. If he had the chance to burn more evidence for kraft- he would have. You need to open your eyes. Goodell is closer with kraft (and has been for 2 decades) than any other owner.

  61. Hey “banned” just do your own research. There are numerous sites that have done the work for you if you are unable. Seahawks #15 out of 32. Arizona being #32 and Broncos #1. Raiders #9.
So before you spout off about “they cheat” look it up.

  62. The real problem here is that we are talking about a knee issue. Every player has an “owie” half way through the season. Putting everyone with any type of injury that keeps the player from being one hundred percent would virtually include everyone. When it’s a knee or the throwing arm/shoulder/hand of QB, for that matter, it should clearly be a requirement to put them on the list. When Russell was dropped from the list, he clearly wasn’t yet 100 percent and I wondered why? Is the list only to be used on playing chances? The chances of Sherman playing were never at issue. Not having the specific policy/rules regarding the list makes it hard to determine if a violation of a rule happened.

I will await to see if the listing rules are better articulated, before final judgement on this issue. I suspect that incident this may help to spur clarification. In any case, No draft picks are at risk and a small fine may be handed down, but that would be about it.

  63. They did it. So what? They are not the Patriots so no biggie.

Meanwhile the Patriots were for sure cheated since they are for a consecutive 6th time in the AFCCG. How? The people (especially the other 31 owners) want answers!

Must be he learned it from Kraft? It sure wasn’t BB unless he somehow discovered a time machine and went forward in time.

  76. Wow… The bookies…the fantasy football leagues and the team opponents have to be pissed off at this move.
Now since this act by Coach Carrol was admitted to by him, and he knows the league policy for reporting injury’s, He felt because Mr. Sherman didn’t miss time it was no big deal…now regardless of whether he felt it was no big deal… His staff should have advised him on the correct path and explained the rules which logically would have place an injury status on Mr. Sherman. This failure to follow league established rules on reporting player injury by the coach and his staff is as clear a rule violation as filming from the wrong spot on a field.
So since he knew he should do it… But choose not to do it and therefor the integrity of the NFL shield and the sport comes in to question.
Looking at the Seahawks under Coach Carrol’s track record,
    • Performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) are used by 8 players to illegally improve athletic performance above what legal training and preparation can do. Each player was suspended for 4 games, except Mr. Sherman, because he had a positive test, but he appealed his suspension, arguing successfully that the NFL mishandled his positive-tested urine sample…..ok sure Mr. Sherman.
    • Coupled with a pair of offseason workout violations ( known as Praticegate) from the past three off seasons, As part of the punishment, the Seahawks will forfeit their 2017 fifth-round pick. The team was fined $400,000, and Carroll was fined $200,000. The Seahawks also forfeit their first week of OTAs, covering three days, in 2017. Seahawks players will be paid for the canceled sessions
    • So based on examples of past Rules infractions the League should fine the team a 1st round pick, suspend Carrol 3 games in 2017, and then fine the team $1,000,000 and the coach $500,000.

But this isn’t the Patriots we are talking about…. so mark it down here folks…nothing but a wrist slap is going to come out from this obvious flagrant Coach admittance rule breakage event. Which went on for 8 to12 weeks……… Vegas betting empires has to be pissed about this…..

The Patriots (not the Hawks) should have to forfeit a 3rd round pick, just for the heck of it

Ok… But we will still win and there is nothing your team can do about it.. 🙂

  78. So Belichick is responsible for the other 31 teams’ injury reports too?

I realized his greatness dwarfed the rest of the league but even I didn’t give him that much credit.

When BB tires of coaching and the owners beg him to become Commissioner they’ll have injury reporting regs. that make sense.

  79. And by not revealing Sherman’s injury so put other teams at a disadvantage!

Anything to nit pick at one of two teams with a run of at least 5 straight years of making the NFL final of 8 teams remaining. And Seattle will be back next year too. Deal with it!
