Stefon Diggs: Brilliant troll or flat-earth truther?

As a football player, I’ve been a fan of Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs from the moment he made his first impact on the NFL as a rookie in 2015. As a potential social-media troll, he may have even better chops. Unless he’s really not deliberately riling up his followers when he suggests that he agrees with NBA player Kyrie Irving’s view that the Earth is flat.

Yes, whether the Earth is flat has recently become a thing in the sports world. Irving may be trolling, too, and the ultimately genius of the approach (if it’s all an act) is that it points out the nature of the age in which we currently reside. Given the ridiculous factual claims that people are willing to blindly embrace as true, maybe it’s not ludicrous to think someone genuinely rejects the long-settled notion that the Earth is round.

The Big Lead has items on both Irving’s comments and the tweets from Diggs. My own assessment is that Diggs is having fun with the issue, but that Irving actually may believe what he’s saying.

Irving would hardly be alone regarding the lingering notion that the planet is pancake-shaped; a few minutes with Google unlocked plenty of evidence of others who reject the evidence that the world is round. The argument hinges on the notion that the spherical theory emerged as a way to supplant religion with science, since the Bible suggests that the world is flat.

The claim is less stunning given that the flat-or-round world generally has morphed into a place where the line between fact and opinion has been obliterated, and all that matters is what you believe.

I believe I now need a nap.

  1. A sphere can be enormous and appear to be flat if observed from a local region.
To an ant, the earth is essentially flat.

  2. It’s not worth debating. The moment an athlete says the earth is flat is when reporters can turn off their recorders and pretend to be listening.

  3. Less than half the population would believe its flat if their idol said the fake news thinks its round. I’d laugh if I wasn’t so scared of these morons.

Now you are just trying to confuse some people who post on here on purpose.

  5. The earth is flat, dinosaurs never existed, evolution is a lie and climate change is a hoax. The mantra of the uneducated and/or the right wing.

  6. I always thought “flat earther” was an exaggerated insult toward global warming skeptics. Then I met one in real life. This guy was in his 30’s and argued his bizzare logic with great passion. I was shocked at how sincere he was. I went home and told my wife that I met a real life flat earth guy. I felt like I seen a unicorn. Come to find out theres actually thousands of these idiots out there. Blows my mind.

  7. The great thing about a flat Earth is we can finally get rid of the silly time zones because the Sun revolves around the flat Earth at the same time everywhere so sayith my bible.

So that’s how you justify believing everything that spews out the mouths of the lefty news media. It’s called being brainwashed.

Just like the Lefty news media- you take some corny nuggets- pin it on a whole group of people and run with it. I thought it was the Right that did all the stereotyping. Hilarious.

  9. I’m sorry. It was the fake news left wing media that said the earth wasn’t flat, dinosaurs were real and science has proved evolution and climate change. Those scoundrels! If only I’d been watching Fox News. Otherwise known as the Trump Infomercial Network. I’d have known better than to be brainwashed.

  10. A flat earth is only the 3rd most unbelievable thing – behind Brexit and Donald Trump as President.

  11. Nothing surprises me anymore. There’s plenty of irrational and illogical minds out there. We still have people that believe Tom Brady deflated footballs.

  12. I’ve read the Bible from Genesis to Revelations, and don’t remember any reference to a “flat earth”. Anyone know where it is? Never understood the science vs. religion debate, I love learning about both and don’t really see them in conflict. Science aims to explain HOW we’re here, while religion aims to explain WHY we’re here. My two cents.

  13. “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” Isaiah 40:22

So…. the Bible teaches the earth is flat? Care to reconsider?

  14. Anyone that chooses to believe in whatever they want to believe in…fine. Have at it. This is America. As for the circle quote proving something…a circle is a 2 dimensional planar surface(that means flat). The Earth is a 3 dimensional sphere.

  15. The science vs religion debate started during the Enlightenment. That’s when people got sick of being persecuted by religious authorities for blowing up their doctrine with facts.

Circles are 2D, thus they’re flat. If you’re atop a mountain on a clear day, the Earth looks like a circle, because you can see in an equal distance regardless of where you look. That is likely what your passage refers to.

  17. I think the only thing the ancient scholars actually said was “the earth is fat”, but they spoke with heavy Latin accents in those days and were misinterpreted. It is fat as well as being round.

Actually, it takes 9 miles of viewing distance in order to “begin” to see the curvature of Earth. I find it hilarious that flat-earthers cannot comprehend the enormous size of Earth.

So you’re implying that ONLY the Left wing media believes this- that they were the FIRST to break this “news”- and you so gleefully give them full credit for it. Wow. Good thing they’ve enlightened you on all of these matters.

Obviously you’re buying two to three of everything they’re selling. If you’re lucky- you can even get back in line and load up on more.

  20. The funny (more sad really) part is that if Trump said the earth was flat, his minions would know he was wrong, but they’d agree with him anyway.

Nothing like trying your hardest to make a point- and that point turns around and gives you an uppercut for the KO.

  23. It would be great to have a house built right on the edge of the Earth with a nice deck overhanging it. Imagine the view- and the insurance you’d have to have.

  24. Only someone with no biblical knowledge would say that the Bible suggests the earth is flat.

And by the way, the idea that people are causing the planet to be dangerously warm because of their SUVs is hardly on the same level of “settled science” as a spherical earth. If you don’t believe me, why don’t you explain how the whole process works? Scientific models of climate can’t make an accurate prediction, so I doubt you can.

  25. Left wing media bias=news the right doesn’t agree with or like. If the fake ‘crises’ created by Fox News aren’t covered by the mainstream media; that means bias. When the fake ‘crisis’ turns out to be nonsense, they just pretend it didn’t happen and move on to the next one.

  26. I someone chooses to believe that mankind is not contributing to climate change, they’re simply not educated or sophisticated enough to understand the explanation.

  27. Hasn’t he ever been on SiriusXM NFL satellite radio?

Or has he ever watched directTV?

They must be in on the conspiracy!

    ==================================

Everyone knows climate change is real. It’s been changing since the beginning of time and always will.

  29. Not saying the Earth is flat, but the Ptolemaic model of the solar system was also once thought to be long settled.

We heard the same thing in the 70’s when global cooling was going to kill a billion people. Then in the 80’s when the hole in the ozone layer was going to kill us. If someone chooses to believe mankind is contributing to climate change, they didn’t read the Climategate emails showing scientists were lying to us. In 10 years you people will fabricate a new climate crises.

Left wing media bias=giving Hillary debate questions in advance and telling us Trump is mobilizing 10,000 troops to round up illegals.

  32. All of you that believe in man made global warming please stop driving. Traffic is getting worse and you folks off the roads would be great for the rest of us who have to go to work. It would be better for the earth too.

  33. tedmurph says:

    ==================================

Guess I haven’t received the same education as you and/or I’m just not sophisticated enough to gullibly believe everything I’m told by the government (and their “totally unbiased” scientists, or intelligence, etc., etc., all under their control).

Does mankind contribute to climate change? It seems *slightly* more likely than not. Do I believe *like you do* that we are 100% responsible? Absolutely not.

Do you realize there are other things that can cause our planet to heat up? Did you know that currently they are more frequent volcanic episodes around the entire globe than in the past? Do you know that ALL the planets in our solar system are also *just coincidently* warmer too? I guess the Earth is getting so damn warm due to us terrible human beings we’re heating up the entire Milky Way Galaxy. Maybe you need the get on the web a bit- do some research- and not take everything the gov, Hillary and CNN have to tell you as Gospel.

Maybe you should think about what an enormous industry global warmer is. You should check into Al Gore a bit too. He’s not quite as straight as *YOU have been brainwashed* to believe. But that’s okay, because he invented the internet- and we all know that’s nothing but the truth- so we’ll let everything else held against Al slide.

Just TRY to have an open mind- it might actually do you some good. Of course the downside to having said open mind is that you will be considered among the lesser-educated and come across as being unsophisticated by all the Jacks who think they know absolutely everything. Then they will jump all over you- trying their best to convince you how smart they really are. Oh well- just something you’ll have to deal with- but it will be worth it once you set yourself free. You’ll see.

  34. Gonna need chapter and verse in the Bible that suggests that the earth is flat. Won’t be able to find it because it is not there. I don’t know a single Christian that believes that the earth is flat. The ignorance in this case is those that suppose to know what Christians actually believe.

  35. Typical liberal, progressive or whatever they call themselves now. Same stupidity. Majority of the left quit school after the 6thgrade and it shows.
    ———
Now that’s funny considering nearly every academic, college professor, and scientist lean left. Meanwhile the right gets its votes from the rural heyseeds and people that aren’t smart enough to understand that regulations are good things and the Bible isn’t non fiction.

  36. Science and math are difficult subjects so the confusion abounds among the most uneducated.

Here is an easy math question, if the Vikings were in 4 Superbowls and never won a game, what is their winning percentage?

Does any one else see the humor in a Packer fan calling others “rural hayseeds”?

  38. Those of you who believe that there is a “left-wing” vs. “right-wing” media are completely deluded. Six huge corporations control 95% of the media in this country. They are all part of the same business elite establishment which owns and runs this country. Each is committed to treating the public like mushrooms — kept in the dark and fed excrement for news. Each does that in a slightly different ways than the others.

And equally sad is if Trump said it was round the left would disagree knowing he was right. And that’s the problem with a 2 party system. Both sides hold the same blame because when it comes down to it there is no difference between dems and reps. In 41 years my life has not changed regardless of what party was in the White House and I bet 95% of people would say the same. Maybe a few more pennies in the bank maybe a few less but for the most part no change. The whole uproar over politics is a joke.

You may be right, but whatever party is in power gives their supporters bragging rights, and right now we have to get used to knuckledraggers talking as though their opinions mean anything. Four four years. Because their “king” was elected in a blind-squirrel-gets-lucky kind of way.
