Martellus Bennett not expected to re-sign before free agency

Getty Images

After the Patriots won the Super Bowl, tight end Martellus Bennett noted that free agents from championship teams often receive a premium on the open market.

It appears Bennett will get the chance to see if he gets that treatment next month. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Bennett will not sign a new deal with the Patriots ahead of the start of the new league year. That doesn’t preclude a return to the Patriots and Bennett fit well with the team, but the chances that someone on the open market will bowl him over are great enough that Rapoport believes it will be hard to keep him in New England.

Bennett isn’t giving any sign of what path he may be taking on social media. He took a break from recounting meetings with celebrities ranging from Sinbad to Magic Johnson to say that he’ll “figure it out when it’s time to figure it out.”

That time will be here fairly soon and Bennett’s market should come into clearer sight pretty quickly in the free agency process.

  1. Well, I guess it is what it is…. If he resigns with the Pats it will have to be a reasonable price or he’ll bring us a high comp pick next year….
    I wouldn’t pay him over 7 million a year…4 year 28 mil w/20 guaranteed

  2. Also, a lot will depend on how Gronks back is recovering & if the Pats trade Jimmy G for decent picks allowing the Pats to snag a talent from the draft stock that will be much more salary cap friendly…

  3. It’s a shame, he collected many millions in Chicago, enuff to last several lifetimes, comes to good place, winning, respected etc ,,,now you are leaving? REALLY?

  4. .
Sayonara……. Most Patriots fans moved on from Bennett two seconds after the Super Bowl. Take your ring and playoff share and be on the first bus to Jacksonville, Cleveland or the Rams. Believe it or not, the Patriots can win without you. Bennett’s priorities :

    1. Contract
    2. Contract
    3. Contract
    4-77 Contract
    78. Teammates

I don’t want this clown back at the league minimum. I’d rather Matt Lengel, who was signed off the Bengals practice squad.
    .

  5. He got lucky with the Pats and kept his mouth shut.

Stone hands and a big mouth will cause he next team a lot of headaches.

  6. Thanks for helping bring another ring back to New England Mahty! some games he was 100% in, other games he didnt seem so interested. Maybe the Pats will go with Matt Lengel as GRONK’s back up or look in the draft.

As a diehard pats fan from Mass living in Chicago where my wife is from, ive watched marty the last 3 seasons. He got his money with the bears, and was 50/50 in terms of caring.

  7. It must pain teams like the Jets see guys do so well in New England for one year to earn their payday then give up on teams like the Jets when the big money contact is signed.

  8. Solid player that played through injuries last year. But I think a team would be crazy to pay this guy like a top five tight end, he’s older, he doesn’t separate vs almost any coverage and although he played nice last season, he’s a ticking time bomb that could explode if your team isn’t doing well.

  9. …and you can bet your last dollar The 5X Superbowl Champion New England Patriots will just keep on keeping’ On!

  10. It would be a bummer losing Bennet but I would rather they use the resources on Hightower, Butler, Branch, and Ryan. The draft is loaded with tight ends.

  11. Kraft will pull the classic Kraft move “I’m bigger than the NFL routine” and simply pay him under the table. But if he would ever get caught he would cry Goodell hates the patriots when disciplined just like their whinny fans.

  12. There is a reason why this guy will be looking for his fifth team soon. You’d think a guy who finally won a championship would finally get it through his head what being a pro football player is about. Expect the ‘football wasn’t fun while I was in New England’ talk soon. ‘They expected us to practice, be professionals and I hardly ever had time to work on my rap album and children’s books.’

  13. Good player, but he certainly gave off that Revis vibe.

Said all the right things, about how he loved being here, but there was just something phony about it. You knew deep down he was just here because he got traded, nothing more nothing less.

New England isn’t for everyone. Marty does enjoy media attention, and realistically, they won’t be the fit for him.

  14. Very classy mature fan base….from hero to zero once the parade is over. I guess that’s why former players have so many knife wound scars on their back……great fans.

  15. Classic example of a guy who can only play for New England. See Randy Moss, Darrell Revis…etc. The Jets were stupid enough to pay Revis and the rest of the league saw how that worked out. He will come crawling back to the Patriots, begging for a somewhat decent contract once he finds out that there is no interest in free agency.

  16. Come to Buffalo Martellus. We dont win as much as NE but we also dont cheat to get there……#Innocentmendontgiveup….

  17. No chance they resign him. He’ll be getting overpaid, and that will always be by some other foolish team than the prudent Patriots.

That said, he was very important in getting the Patriots another ring. He was productive when Gronk was out early in the season and late, and he clearly played hurt.

Obviously, Gronk is in his own category, but Bennett is right in that next tier of excellent tight ends who can catch and run block.

    You mean “smart” fan base.

He helped the Pats get another ring. Much appreciated, but he’s a mercenary like Revis and everyone knows it…well, maybe except you.

  19. He’s the Brandon Marshall of TEs. Teams and fans fall in love with him because of his talent but then his relentless self-promoting and general weirdness take over and they can’t wait to see him leave.

  20. He’ll get his money somewhere and then just disappear like most everyone else who leaves Belichick’s system. He might miss the attention more than he would the extra money.

  21. I’d love to have him back, but to knock a guy for wanting to get all the money he can is ridiculous. The NFL doesn’t care about these guys, why should they care about them. He won a ring, I have no problem with him setting up his family for life. After all, one hit to the knees and it could be over tomorrow.

  22. A lot of criticism from other Pats fans don’t understand it.

He came here and was basically a model citizen, caused no issues in the locker room, was well liked, worked very hard, played very well when he was healthy and played ok through a couple of injuries. He was crucial to the SB run and made some crucial catches in the SB that helped make the comeback happen.

If he wants to get paid more than the Pats will give up then he’s doing nothing wrong. It would be great if he stayed with the Pats but can’t blame him for wanting to make the money either.

  23. The guys that are mad at him for going after the money are not being realistic. This is his final shot at the big payday and he has to make it cover him and his family for life. Thats a higher priority than appeasing fans or even for his own personal job satisfaction. The Patriots will put out a decent fair contract, but its likely some team is going to overpay for him and if his family is his first priority he has to grab that.

Let it go buck, let it go lol

  25. Pats will be looking at the draft for either the Alabama guy, the Miami guy or the Butts kid.

  26. Brady, the coaching staff and the strong locker room leadership put Bennett in a position to succeed. Should he not resign with Pats, he will be a journeyman TE at best the rest of his career.

  27. Pretty sure that the Pats have let his agent know what they are willing to pay MartyRex. Odds are that he will find somebody willing to pay him more than The Pats to play on a team with inferior talent. We will see where he ends up.

  28. Funny how many people are hostile at a guy who should get #1 TE money from somebody not wanting to stay with a team that would pay him at a much lower rate.

Best of luck to Martysaurus wherever he should land.

That means nobody else will be…….? In the dark with no light.

If you’ve been paying a lot of attention to the things Bennett’s been saying over the course of the season, it’s been becoming increasingly clear that his model behavior was more a function of his contract status and less because of the value and amount of emphasis he places on the game. He will not be back in a NE uniform.

  31. He fit well with the offense and played hard. But if he wants more money, less dignity, and uniforms that look like toddler onesies there’s always the Dolphins.

  32. Bennett was just talking about how the Boston market (US 8th largest TV market) would be good for his Imagination Agency side business.

He may take less than NFL market value to stay in the Boston market if his overall market value (including his side business) is equal. So it’s possible for him to pass up being the highest paid TE in a small market because the small market hurts his overall value.

You’re mistaking, it’s the Bronco’s that cheat the salary cap.
You have never, ever had any correct facts.
I’m sure all that anger has built up from being a Jets fan for all these years.
    Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll will 4 or 5 games next year.

  34. This is his last shot at a big payday. He played hard, he played hurt and by all indications was a good team mate.
But….As a tight end he was good, not great. 55 catches and 700 yards. He is not a top 5 TE. Decent blocker, not a great blocker. Decent hands, not great hands. If he wants to get paid like a top 5 TE at 8-10 Million per year, he’s gone. Get paid in the top 5-8 TE range at 7-8 million per year and he’ll sign here.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he’ll be back with the Pats. 3 years at 25 million with a big chunk up front.

    ——————————————————–

Yeah, I too am surprised. Bennett did a great job for the Pats and was playing hurt for most of the season. I understand he might price him out of the New England market as other veterans resurrected in New England have done in the past (e.g. Talib, Mark Anderson), but good luck to him if he does.

  36. If Gary Kubiak was still in Denver, he would have pursued Bennett. You can never have enough tight ends in Kubiak’s offense.

  37. Bennett did a really good job this year and the Pats needed him. So give him credit.

But with a guy like Bennett you have to worry about the “Revis effect:”

Great performance in a contract/championship year that drops off dramatically after signing the next contract.

Bennett’s outspoken approach to “getting paid” should make all GMs Leary about any guaranteed money.

  38. Knew from the get-go this guy was a 1 year rental. We got him in a contract year and he balled out until he got hurt, but it still resulted in a ring. Revis 2.0, thanks for your help, enjoy that new contract that some other team is going to give you.

  39. As much as his “I’m going to free agency as a Super Bowl Champion” and “Teams overpay Super Bowl Champions” comments irked me, I’m still grateful for what he did this past season. He was playing hurt the past, what, month or two? He toughed it out and I respect the hell out of that.

I hate to see him go, but if he does, best of luck to him.

  40. Mahty got what he came to NE for – a ring. He was a good teammate and he contributed. If he wants to cash in now and go somewhere else, that’s his choice. That’s why we have free agency. If he moves on, I thank him for his contributions to #5 and I wish him well. No hard feelings.

    ——————————–

Actually, Buffalo doesnt win as much as NE so its not newsworthy when they cheat is a more accurate statement. Pumping artificial noise (the train whistle when opposing teams are coming to the line), improper injury reporting, and a slew of PED violations make for unclean hands. And aren’t they the team that figured out how to use the stadium doors to control the wind conditions turning it on and off to their advantage? I remember giving that points for creativity. But still its cheating.

    Wrong team. That was Denver.

  43. Have a feeling he ends up in Miami. Either way both sides got what they wanted. If money matters more than rings, good luck to you marty

  44. This all totally fine. I didn’t expect to have him for more than this year anyway. I liked what he brought to the team, and imperfections aside, it was great to have him on the field after Gronk went down. Dude is tough and clearly played hurt most of the year. Let him go get paid, that’s his prerogative – he earned it – but just don’t let it be the Pats that pay him. Would rather see them get younger at the position.

Thanks for everything Marty – you are forever ensconced in Patriots’ championship lore!

  45. Don’t do it Martellus.

You will get paid a nice “chunk o’ change” to stay AND WIN! Are you really sure you want to head back into another situation where, when the season ends, you are sitting at home watching?

Consider it like this; you get paid for 16 games in most places, but in New England you are getting that extra “post season” pay bonus. Do the math and don’t forget that rush as you entered the lockerroom with another “W.”

  46. I sure hope he doesn’t end up in Miami. Give it time this baffoon will run his mouth and say something about NE if they do not offer him a contract that he thinks he is worth.

  47. I’ll be happy when players are not highly paid anymore. That way the team won’t have to cut them because they don’t want to pay them more and the fans won’t be salty they actually want to play for a team willing to pay them more

  48. Why would any team sign a player who does not care about winning anymore (?) but just getting paid, and not only that but give him insane money. (Plus he is old in football years)

Marty … Welcome to the New York Jets…

(I will LMAO if that happens)

    BAAAA BYE!

like most tumpbots, spewing nattatives and judging Martellus as if they personally knew the man. It’s the way the newly embolden operate.

  50. Thanks for coming. One Championship is more than what you had before you got here and more that what you have when you leave.

  51. Slightly used one year rental, low miles never a problem starting but now requires higher octane fuel.

  52. Why are Dolphins and Steelers fans weighing in and criticizing the Patriots for not going to the mat on Bennet? Hilarious, like you don’t have enough of your own problems to deal with. Dolphins way over pay for a garbage team that can’t win and the Steelers can’t beat the Patriots, worry about that.

    ++++++++++++++++

Bennett’s entire playoff share was $186k or less than 60% of a single game check under the deal he just wrapped up. The playoff cash argument only carries water for a guy getting paid the minimum

  54. I don’t think he showed that much in New England, and he definitely had the opportunity to. Signing him in free agency, you’d have to overpay. It’s not a good move. TE is deep this year in the draft.

  55. Bennett is GONE! This dude got his ring and now wants to go get paid. period. Football is important to him, but so are a ton of other things.

Works out well for the Patriots, they got 1 year of Bennett who was on his best behavior and now he’ll move on, sign a big deal somewhere, get comfortable and be back to being a distraction.

Similar to Revis, he was the perfect 1 mercenary, both sides got what they wanted and moved on.

Pats will draft another stud TE and be fine.

No way the Pats would pay that much. He’s not an $8 mil a year player, not even close. They probably be hesitant to give him half of that which is why he’ll sign elsewhere.

  57. This clown is over rated.
He seems to run down field about 8 yards, turns around and the ball is right there.
