Allegation against Joe Mixon from high school could affect draft stock

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon is the most polarizing player in this year’s draft, a first-round talent who punched a woman while he was in college, an ugly incident that was caught on tape. But that may not be the only allegation of violence against a female that has teams concerned about Mixon.

Longtime personnel evaluator Gil Brandt, who kept Mixon off his list of the Top 150 prospects in this year’s draft, said today on PFT Live that a high school incident is of concern as well.

“I just wouldn’t draft him,” Brandt said of Mixon. “His problems started back in high school.”

Although the incident has been largely overlooked, a man named Anthony Hernandez alleged that Mixon punched his daughter in high school.

“I know for a fact he threw my daughter to the ground and hit her. I went to the school and . . . they hid him in the office. He got no punishment. The police even came. I was escorted off the campus as if I did something wrong. These are simply the facts, he’s a woman beater,” Hernandez said in a report read by the lawyer for Amelia Molitor, the victim in Mixon’s highly publicized incident at Oklahoma.

Mixon has denied hitting any other women and was not charged in connection with the alleged incident in high school.

  1. Let’s dig even further…what did he do in grade school? What about pre-school? There is all sorts of violence against women in the pre-school ranks.

  2. I can guarantee you that he has not been removed from the Cowboys draft board

  3. I’m taking that dad’s word over Mixon.
Play with fire you’re likely to get burned.

  4. If he turns out to be a star he will be considered “rehabilitated” just like Tyreek Hill. – Whether or not he has any remorse or has any change in his ways.

  5. “I know for a fact he threw my daughter to the ground and hit her. ”

Then you should’ve called the police and had him charged with assault. SO why didn’t you, Dad?

  6. Hearing only one side of the story isn’t particularly helpful. Did she assault him prior to the incident, as well? That would explain the lack of punishment.

  7. this guy is a steal in a later round. probably will have a huge chip on his shoulder and turn out to be best RB out of this yr’s draft

history notwithstanding, he deserves an nfl shot.

if i was a GM and needed a RB, i would be all over this guy in rd 3.

  8. All for second chances, but if this is true he will probably do it again. Who ever drafts this kid will be taking a big chance.

  9. Mixon’s agent leaked this. He knows Jerry Jones is getting all steamed up for Mixon, and is now likely to draft him with their first round pick. #leader

  10. Dudes not gonna get drafted… This isn’t Stoops trying to keep
his overinflated salary at any cost….There are billionaires with a “see I have a conscience”….brand to sell

  11. I watched Mixon play in the state high school basketball tournament (pretty remarkable athlete) as a senior. At one point he was called for an offensive foul, and then was immediately called for a technical foul, for flashing a gang sign at the ref. Had never seen that before.

That all said, all this stuff was a while ago, and while teams need to appreciate there’s a risk I think that the kid shouldn’t be tainted for life because of what he did when he was young and stupid. Can’t assume he’ll end up older and stupid. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

  12. He sounds like every other talented therefore protected from his own stupidity athlete. We had a couple of local talents that were picked up and charged with MIP, but our now, legendary coach, managed to get it set aside and ignored so they could play in the state playoffs. Typical.

  13. The Vikings employed a proven child abuser that tore the scrotum of little four year old boy.

This guy is a character upgrade for them and just moved up their draft board.

  14. How has this story not come out before today? Oh that’s right, the draft is in a week.

  15. Personally, I would not touch Mixon in the draft or as a rookie FA, regardless of what any other team (s) thought. I’d let another team deal with the headaches that would almost certainly ensue with having Mixon a part of your franchise.

  16. I’d still draft him on my team. One good season and most people won’t even care what he did in the past ( unless he killed someone).

  17. Mixon will probably be a late first or early second round pick. Peyton Manning reportedly did rude and crude things back at Tennessee. We survived that. Adrian Peterson was beyond cruel to his children. The sun came up the next day. We tend to get over these things quickly. If it doesn’t affect us personally, most of us tend to move on with our lives. The Washington Redskins never did change their name, and apparently the world didn’t stop turning. I actually wish the only problem I had in my life is whatever Joe Mixon supposedly did several years ago. He’s big, strong, fast, and he can run and catch.

  18. Does Amelia Molitor have a pending civil suit against Mixon? If so, her attorney is an idiot for doing something that endangers Mixon’s earning potential. If not, he and Molitor should shut up. It’s not like she’s some model citizen.

  19. Which is what I said yesterday. If he gets drafted, he’s going in the 5th or 6th raound with his disappointing production in relation to the hype he had coming out of high school coupled with obvious anger issues with women in particular, not just that well-publicized incident.

  20. I always get a kick from reading many posts that say, I wouldn’t want our team drafting this guy. And fans from 32 teams are saying that now or most of them are. But he will be taken at some point and when he is watch how fast those same fans are of that team then start to explain it away. Rationalize it if you will while 31 other fan bases condemn the team.

Happens all the time. Truth is if fans think a player can really help their team and would be a great addition for football reasons as far as being the missing piece for winning then fans will put up with signing most anyone. And it’s not just fans but owners and coaches too.

  21. I was on board with the Eagles drafting Mixon because I thought it was an isolated incident. This “news” certainly makes me rethink that position.

  22. It’d really be nice to see the NFL actually factor in character like almost every other job does. All the rumors were suggesting otherwise (that Mixon was going second round) but maybe as the truth gets out teams will do the right thing.

  23. It wasn’t on tape. Of course he says he never has punched another woman (prove it)….until he punches another woman.

Once a POS, always a POS.

  24. I wouldn’t draft him. Some teams might. We all know the teams who don’t care about their players character and we all know the majority who do care. He will be a Cowboy, 49er, Seahawk or a Viking. He wont go in the first round though.

  25. Mixon was charged with a misdemeanor and entered an Alford plea, maintaining his innocence. He was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and mandatory cognitive behavioral counseling. Mixon was suspended for the entire 2014 season, as well.
Mixon and his legal team elected to release footage of the punch in December, despite efforts from Molitor and the City of Norman to block the surveillance tape from ever coming out. Mixon apologized to Molitor, his family and the university in a press conference Dec. 23 — two days after OU coach Bob Stoops said a one-season suspension wouldn’t have been enough punishment for Mixon had the altercation occurred today.”

    Did you read the article?
