Report: Derek Carr getting antsy about pace of contract talks

The last we heard from the Raiders, they said they wanted to get started on a contract extension for quarterback Derek Carr shortly after the draft.

They’re apparently not moving quickly enough for Carr’s liking.

According to Michael Silver of the NFL Network, Carr “has grown frustrated with the slow pace” of discussions since he wants to get a deal done before the start of training camp. He also reports there has been “no significant communication” between the team and the agents so far.

Carr’s heading into the final year of his rookie deal, and considering he’s been open about wanting to be a “Raider for life,” they ought to be as friendly as a deal containing such large numbers can be.

But his performance and simple inflation could push him past Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s $25.594 million per year average, which complicates things. There’s some urgency at play as well, because as a second-round pick, there’s no convenient fifth-year option for the team to pick up. Their options are pay now or be prepared to use the franchise tag in 2018, or else get started on a negotiation and handle things now.

The Raiders have thrown Marshawn Lynch up as a human shield to pacify Oakland fans about their upcoming move to Las Vegas, but they can’t afford problems with their franchise quarterback, who has made them relevant again on their way out the door.

  1. Ohhh man….. This would be the best. Leave the raiders and come to the 49ers my man. We have all the money in the world to pay you off

Could you imagine how mad raiders fans would be? Losing their team and their starting QB within like 2 seasons.

Just do it. You know you want to stay in cali.

  2. Come on Reggie, this isn’t a middle linebacker or RT. Get this and Big Gabe done now!

  3. He wants to be there and they want him, Reggie is just not overzealous with decisions that impact the cap.

It is May, much like Marshawn they will get something done at the right price.

  4. Derek Carr: Fans who aren’t still with us weren’t true Raider fans

Lets see how much of a Raider you are when its time to sign that contract…

    Yep sounds about right….

  5. He’s not Luck, Rogers, Brady so why would he get paid more than them. There are 10-12 QB’s at least better than him.

  6. I personally believe that they are working on Kahlil Mack/Amari Cooper deals, so that they take care of Carr

  7. Raiders are in a great position. Derek Carr is one of the top QBs in the league, but he might not even be the best QB on his team. The Raiders drafted Conner Cook last year, who slipped all the way to the fourth round (just like Dak Prescott). Cook might still prove to be the best QB from his class, once he gets some playing time. Guys like Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, and Dak Prescott only got on the field because of injuries to the starting QB. They were buried on the depth chart. The one thing we can all agree on is that NFL coaches and scouts have a difficult time judging QBs. Derek Carr would probably be the number one overall pick in a re-draft, and he went in the second round.

  8. Perhaps the team wants to know how his leg is holding up after breaking it last season before committing to a long term contract.

  9. He’ll break the bank next year. Mark Davis should learn from Washington’s mistakes with Cousins and NOT franchise Carr. Just pay him. He’s also much better than Cousins.

  10. Yeah stay in Cali and give that crap state half you contract or go to Vegas and pay no taxes. Mcniner55 you’re a Jack wagon.

  11. The obscenity in this article is that “The Beard” makes 25.594 million dollars per year. If his pay was consummate to his play that number should be 5.594 million.

He’s good, just not 25 mil per year good (neither is Luck).

  13. Teams don’t just hand out $25 mil a year deals at the drop of a hat. Reggie needs to see how that affects the team long term. Besides, you want them to keep the OL happy too so you can keep your backside clean. Be patient.

your team sucks, why would he go there?

  15. Michael Silver is a full of it! He pulls stories out of his……

  16. The Raiders should’ve never thrown huge $$$ (even before incentives) at a 31 year old washed-up headcase like Marshawn Lynch. Those funds could’ve instead contributed to inking Carr to a lucrative long-term deal with more ease. Derek Carr deserves top-dollar and now I suspect that the Raiders may be having cap issues with a potential Carr deal. Makes me boiling angry that they shot themselves in the foot in this way.

  17. The raiders’ ONE year of relevance is already showing signs of regression to the mean … enjoy the slide back down. LOL.

  18. Still gotta sign Mack and Cooper? Lol did anyone see what happened to this team last year without Carr?

They didn’t just fall off the map they sucked! Tragic mess of a finish to the year when you get lit up By Siemian, lose the bye and get Jack hammered by Brock Oz.

Raiders should be backing up a Brinks truck to his house for real.

  19. Antsy? Why?

He’s already made more than most people make in 10 lifetimes.

And, he can always fall back on his college major.

What did you major in anyway, Derek?

  20. cap hell coming

signing lynch is why this happened

they are out of money and will be in trouble

applying contracts to other good, young talent
    on the roster

good thing they overpaid for osmele, irvin and
    sean smith, though

wake us win they win a division title

  21. mike silver believed goodell with deflategate so
he is sort of dumb, but oakland has not
signed carr yet because carr has leverage

  22. Sorry. Your Owner is poor. All the money went to efforts to move to Vegas.

If you want to be a QB and chase greatness without worrying about the owner….moving the team to the middle of the 🌵desert. Not having enough money to pay you💵💵. Come to the 49ers.

  23. He doesnt know how to play the contract game. He needs Cousins agent. Unless he tanks next year, he will be worth a lot more money when he hits the open market. Let them be the ones getting antsy not you Carr.

  24. After being a fan for 40+ years, I’ve all but given up on my loyalty to this franchise. I’m a Raiders fan but moreso an OAKLAND fan (native). However, I can say unapologetically that this guy is OVERRATED. He is “too antsy” with the ball and benefits from a new NFL that is seemingly “choreographed” for any quarterback with a fairly quick release to succeed. Look for my Oakland Raiders to regress to a pedestrian 9-7 this year.

  25. I think he is a little bit overrated, he disappears against elite defenses, just go watch the Chiefs and Broncos games, those large athletic corners give him hard time, Talib, Harris, Peters, just can’t beat them

  26. CALI is BROKEE. Davis, Spanos, Kroenke are all from the same pot of terrible owners. “Calpers” is California’s mill around the neck of taxpayers. Calpers is the state employees “cradle-to-grave” retirement money pot for them. They deserve each other. Spanos’s Carson team won’t build a fan base. Their tickets are already re-sold to opposing team fans. Davis is taking his football and leaving town and thinks stupid Raider fans will follow him anywhere. Kroenke….when has anybody heard from him? He couldn’t care less about the Rams..he’s too involved in building a monument in L-a-L-a-Land to himself….with his wife’s Walmart money. The NFL is allowing their character and traditions to be destroyed.

  27. Its not the 25 million dollar arm they’re worried about, it’s those 3 dollar chicken legs.

  28. How did this guy ever get a job at the NFL network….BSPN makes much more sense for his employment….he does have a history of raider hater bias on his resume which is I know is mandatory for BSPN, but now maybe also for NFL network as well.

  29. Dear Raiders, don’t make the mistake Denver did with Von Miller. Elway tried to low ball Miller and waited too long. Von became eligible for free agency and gained all the leverage and became the highest paid defensive player in the league. Good qbs are hard to find. Carr has already established himself as a franchise qb. He is young and will only get better. Lock him up now or you will pay more, later. Just ask Von.

  30. I would find it funny if by the time the Raiders play in Vegas Carr takes his act elsewhere and the team fades away. Crowds will dwindle and Doof Davis will be banned from Hooters.

  31. Until I see DC say this himself, I ain’t buyin it. Doesn’t sound like something he would say at all. Dude knows the jackpot is headed his way.

    ——————-

Simple…because they’re all already signed to different teams.

  33. I remember when raiders fans laughed at the Broncos for having to pay Von Miller such a hefty sum. Well get ready raiders fans, Derek Carr is about to break the bank. Will probably sign a contract making him the highest paid player in NFL history. Then Khalil Mack will be next……

    cap hell coming

signing lynch is why this happened
    ——————-
Lynch’s contract is 1.43% of the 2017 cap, and they still have 32M in cap space for 2017. Even if Lynch hits all of his contract incentives this year his number will still be easily managed. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

  35. Maybe Carr wants to focus on his contract before training camp so he can be 100% focused on Football.

He will be set for the rest of his life.

  36. Yeah, because Mike Silver is everything Raiders and he an Carr are golfing buddies. Silver is a tool, and was once banned from entering the Raiders buildings. He still holds a grudge.

  37. I call b.s. This doesnt sound like Carr, at all.

Then certainly there will be a statement by Carr refuting same. Where is it? Laughing at Raider fanboys and their man crush!

  38. Let me get this right….a person at the NFL Network (who is also a complete raider hater) gets his info from a “source” even though this guys brother is a co-worker at the NFL Network who he could have just asked. Personally it’s complete non-sense—Raiders have all the cap space they need right now to sign him, and can front load it if need be. I expect it to get completed after June 2nd.

The reality is he is already signed for 5 million this year. Luck had a 5th year option exercised by the colts at 16 million for the year before he got the 140 million deal.

So yes he could sign a 6 year deal for a $130 million. 25 per 5, + 5 for this year which is the same money Luck got.
