Report: Alterraun Verner out of shape in workout for Jaguars

Former Buccaneers cornerback Alterraun Verner is one of the few remaining available players in our Free Agent Hot 100. So why is he still available?

It may be that he’s out of shape. The Florida Times-Union reports that Verner worked out for the Jaguars but didn’t look good.

He was a little out of shape. Word is they will do a do-over,” the paper quoted an unnamed source as saying.

The 28-year-old Verner was a Pro Bowler for the Titans in 2013 and signed a four-year, $26.5 million contract with the Buccaneers in 2014. He was released this offseason after three years in Tampa.

The Jaguars’ top three cornerbacks are Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye and Aaron Colvin. Verner could provide some veteran depth, if he can get into good enough shape that the Jaguars want to sign him.

  1. Just stay on the burger and pizza diet and we’ll slide you in at guard.

  2. Food alone wouldn’t make him out of football shape….not playing football would…and of course not working out. It’s a shame most athletes get to a certain point in life where pretty much everything gets handed to them and they become complacent and lazy.

  3. Soo happy he is with the Jags! I guess there are some perils to the “Free Lunch”.

Did you not read the story? The very first sentence says he is a free agent. This was a try out, he is not “with the Jags”.

  4. Being a “Pro Bowler” is a joke. It doesn’t mean you are a special player to be a Pro Bowler.

  5. We’ve come out of hyperspace into a meteor shower, some kind of asteroid collision. It’s not on any of the charts. Our position’s correct, except …no Alterraun.

You had one job in the offseason.

One down vote….who knew Alterraun Verner had a PFT account?

He is NOT with the Jags or ANY team; they brought him in for a tryout. If he’s that out of shape, no wonder he’s still available…And he’ll probably stay that way UNLESS he can get it together.

  8. I wish to God every shlub who comments negatively on a guy who shows up to an NFL camp/tryout for being “out of shape” posted a shirtless pic of themselves and then padded up to repeatedly run 20 yds at 18+ mph and then allowed themselves to get hit by a 250 LB man running at 15+ MPH.

It’s easy to sit behind the keyboard and say, “Yeah, I’d do that for $$$” when you have no clue about what it takes to be an elite level freak of nature or what big boy football feels like.

Just cause you played Pop Warner or maybe HS, don’t act like you know. The reality is most human beings don’t have the motivation to stay medically healthy much less to be Elite athletes. And even the majority of Elite athletes don’t possess the fortitude it takes to surrender themselves to full speed collisions in practice and on gameday.

Enjoy the game and be glad JJ Watt or Muhammed Wilkerson is turning the corner of your couch and bearing down on you.

Sure it can. He’s a DB not a lineman.

As far as laziness, it seems most people in the world are. I’m in my mid 30s, a little bit overweight, and most of the people I see around are obese and prematurely aged. They make me feel like a college jock in comparison.

Named after a fictional planet in Star Wars. Fun.

Except for the fact of not being spelled the same…..

  11. Why would any team consider signing this guy. He got big money his last contract and coasted. Now he wants some team to give him a job and he can’t even be bothered to show up in shape. Next stop for him will be a greeter at Wal-Mart.
