Derek Carr has “complete faith” contract will be done by camp

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is heading into the final year of the deal he signed after being drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft and that’s made an extension a major topic of conversation around the team this offseason.

A report last week described Carr as growing frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations for a new deal, which General Manager Reggie McKenzie responded to by saying the team will do everything they can in order to reach an agreement with their quarterback. For his part, Carr sounds like he’s OK with where things stand.

“I have an agent who is in charge of that and I am confident that he and Mr. McKenzie will work it out,” Carr said, via Anthony Galaviz of the Fresno Bee. “I am only focused on becoming a better football player and helping my teammates become better players. I have complete faith it will get done before training camp. These things take time. The Raiders know I want to be here; this is my family, and I know they want me to be their quarterback.”

There’s no deadline to getting a deal done until it becomes time to hand out franchise tags next year and even that would only leave the Raiders with the option of using it to buy even more time to talk about a long-term extension. That doesn’t mean it will take that long, but we’re well off from any point to worry about Carr moving on from Oakland.

  1. If he can stay healthy, Derek Carr has the potential to become a HOF player along the lines of Steve Young, Peyton Manning et al.

So goes Derek, so goes the team. A natural born leader.

A confident man with a good head on his shoulders.

The Raiders are fortunate to have him.

  2. It will get done. Apparently the sticking point is when the guaranteed $ gets paid out as Reggie likes to frontload his contracts while Carr would like that money after 2 years as after the team is in Vegas, he doesn’t have to pay California’s 10% income tax. That’s millions of dollars in his pocket but it kind of hamstrings the team’s future so we’ll probably see some compromise here after some back and forth…

  3. Just like the faith of oakland fans that the raiders would stay in oakland.

  4. Hopefully that new contract will come with a game plan on how to beat the Chiefs.

  5. Good quarterbacks have the ultimate bargaining position. Carr should not sign a long term deal now because in the next 2 years contracts for Brees,Cousins,Stafford,Matt Ryan will push the salary structure much higher. He should demand 30 mil per year knowing that the Raiders will franchise him if necessary. Cousins has done (and will do) very well using a similar strategy.

  6. Oh how cute, little Tebow Jr. telling everyone about his faith and stuff.

I can’t wait for Oakland to flop hard this year. 7-9 or 6-10 at best.

    Carr is a fraud.

  7. Wrong. Raider fans new the city and county were not going to put up the money for a new stadium. We all new this was coming. The move just gives the haters something to feed on. It’s still our Raiders no matter what city they call home.

  8. Between Mack and Carr, I hope they take a team friendly deal. lol Knock off a few $millions per year…

We don’t want the Flacco result, no team around them.

Carr is a product of the offensive line. See Dak Prescott.

    See any great Quarterback.

  10. But wait, Mike Silver had sources that said Derek was mad and was upset, so is Derek lying? He is a man of faith and I don’t think lying is good for the faith. So could it be that Mike Silver is a complete tool and just made this crap up because of his lifetime ban from entering all Raiders facilities and he is still holding a grudge? Hmmm, now this is a real story…

  11. Now THIS sounds like the Derek Carr that I’ve actually heard speak and quoted directly.
Everything about getting anxious, frustrated or anything else simply are not true. DC just directly refuted it all.

Silver has not been right about anything Raiders, since his buddy Lance Kiffin was the coach..!

  13. The last article made it seem like Carr was ready to hold out and leave! he was MAD!!!!

but of course now we get the truth and find out the other article was all nonsense, like most news these days.

  14. Get every dollar Derek! No hometown discounts…because the Raiders don’t actually have a home! What a joke of an owner!

  15. kalil Mack set to break the bank with leverage ,too.

    Yikes!

They’ll lack depth after 2017, unless they had knockout 2016 and 2017 drafts.

  16. All these Carr haters posting.. .this guy is going to be talked about as a top 2-3 QB for the next 10-12 years…. Grab your popcorn and watch

  17. Sorry Derek, let the haters hate, and spread their lies from their “sources.” Let them believe that you are really getting angry, and miserable and will only sign a 150 million dollar contract, that pays you 25 to 30 million per season. Otherwise its just boring these day for the raider hating hating media. Also rip on how bad it is on playing in that sewer in Oakland..the simple “facts” are the raiders have gone the longest currently in the NFL without anybody being arrested. No drama, just a great young team built for success for years to come……reminds me of that other team who also plays in that sewer in Oakland a few years back, when they drafted guys named Curry, Thompson, And Green…Just like them we drafted guys like Carr, Mack, and Cooper.

  18. Maybe someday he’ll grow up and be able to beat the Chiefs. Not likely, but maybe. He’s nothing but the product of weak schedules.

  19. Cant wait till this contract doesnt get done and he starts to lose faith in the raiders!

Come to the 49ers my boy. We will pay you all you nned!

  20. “There’s no deadline to getting a deal done until it becomes time to hand out franchise tags next year…”

But there is an impetus on both sides. Only Oakland can pay Carr more for the coming year. If Carr goes into the final year of his current contract he assumes all the injury risk. On the flip side if he comes out of that year healthy and having rocked the house Oakland has lost all leverage. This is just one of those times where a deal makes too much sense for both sides not to get done.

  21. Raiders wont botch this. You cant spend 15 years rebuilding only to be stubborn over money when you finally do find a QB worth a damn after trying for so long.

Give Carr what he wants, hes a bigger priority than Mack, the team is still good if Mack walks and gets the biggest contract ever from someone. But if Carr leaves the Raiders are bottom 5 all over again.

Raiders fans dont deserve that after getting a taste of the good stuff the last 3 years.

  22. I guess it’s a good thing that the Raiders have a QB contact thing being babbled about.
I figure you pay the kid. You’re nowhere without him. He’s practically the reason they’re being talked about by the babblers.

  23. Carr and Mack aren’t going anywhere. Reggie will structure the deals right to keep them Raiders for life without being in salary cap hell. They are the faces of the franchise. Gone are the days of Javon Walker and Larry Brown signings……

  24. It’s hilarious seeing the raiders’ “faithful” staying on the bandwagon in hopes of a SECOND year of success. Lol. Not. Happening.

  25. Having been a Raiders fan for decades, I’d be willing to bet Mark Davis doesn’t have the cash on hand for a signing bonus like Andrew Luck’s. He’s put money into the failed Carson project, received a billion dollar loan for the stadium, has to pay $40 million a year for 10 years just to move; while sinking $300M of his own money into the stadium.
This is his business, and aside from another loan, he’s gonna have to get some cash flow (tv payout) to give Carr his bonus.
I bet he wishes he hadn’t tarped off the upper deck now.
