Michael Bennett says he will “boycott” local newspaper

Near the end of last season, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman took some time off from speaking to reporters following a press conference argument that saw Sherman threaten to ruin a reporter’s career.

Sherman eventually apologized for that and resumed speaking to the media, but now one of his teammates has elicited memories of that stretch by vowing not to speak to one of Seattle’s newspapers. Defensive end Michael Bennett responded to a tweet from the Seattle Times about a column by Matt Calkins by saying he would “boycott” the paper and encourage his teammates to join him in refusing to speak to reporters from that outlet.

Calkins wrote a column calling Bennett “as direct and as fearless as they come” in regards to both his play on the field his commitment to issues and causes he believes in off of it. Calkins also criticized Bennett for bouts of “immaturity” when dealing with the media and closes the column by writing that he loves Bennett’s message but “sometimes, I wonder about the messenger.”

There’s nothing too unusual about players taking an issue with something written or said about them in the media. These things often blow over in time, so we’ll have to see if this proves to be an exception.

  1. I wish it were intentionally ironic but I don’t think so. Way to prove his point.

That said, his job description is to run through walls, or block them, who cares if he’s immature?

  2. So Bennett decides to prove Calkins right by initiating a boycott. The Seahawks love coming off as disrespectful and Carroll feeds into it and then gets upset when players openly take on the coaching staff for play calling. Bennett’s brother Marty was a bit outspoken in New England, but always seems happy and respectful.

  3. Omg what will the paper do? The Times should just fold now because a FOOTBALL PLAYER won’t talk to them.

Typical Seahawks. Thinking they are WAY more relevant and important than they actually are…..

  4. One of the things I’ve noticed about my local media {I’m in a market with more than one major league team} is that they don’t report much on the personal lives of players other than fluff stories and charitable works. They restrict criticism to on-field performance and don’t make personal value judgments. I think I prefer it that way.

Can’t really argue that one. Bennett is an ingrate who sees himself as oppressed because of the color of his skin when in fact he’s one of the most privileged people on the planet who’s received rich rewards for his gifts as a football player. Sad really

Yeah, he’s “privileged” for his “gift.” Didn’t work for it at all. Everything has been handed to the man.

Seriously, consider just for a second that your line of thinking might contain racist tendencies–intentional or not.

Fine. Let’s pretend that all cops aren’t racist murderers as you claim. How about we have these same police officers have to carry mandatory liability insurance.

I guarantee you will see a dramatic decline in killing of all citizens by these very same police officers.

It’s very sad you cannot see that Michael Bennett and other NFL players are speaking out on unjust killing by police officers of ALL American citizens. You just want to associate a black face to his cause so you don’t have to address the actual issue.

  9. Bennett is like most NFL players — he’s a spoiled brat.
Questioning his maturity hit a nerve and his reaction proves the writer’s point. Bennett is immature at times.
The other thing is, these pro athletes love the media and actively seek to get all the time they can get in the media. They even promote themselves through tweeting and other electronic ways.
But brother, say one negative thing about them — even when it’s true — and they cry foul!
They act like a bunch of babies, at times.
Hey Bennett — waa, waa, waa !! Give him a binky to shut him up.

  11. the media no longer reports, it tries to guide us into thinking their way…reporters are nothing more than vehicles for the almighty advertising $…

  12. Liberal mentality to a T. They love to shoot off about everything and everyone they don’t agree with but the minute someone criticizes them they cry and go hide. I’m surprised he didn’t say he needs a safe space after this reporter had the nerve to trigger him.

Hopefully people with common sense will just boycott watching this clown play.

  13. Let’s assume all cops ARE racist murders. How does that vindicate anything that Michael Bennett has said or done regarding this issue and the Colin Kaepernick issue? The fact that Kaep CANNOT see any reason to stand and honor the flag of the nation that has provided HIM with so much opportunity has not one thing to do with “racist, murdering cops” – especially when the leader of said nation was a black man. Use some logic and common sense.

You are a sick individual if you believe that incident was not real.

You need to seek professional help.

  15. Columnist: “Mr. Bennett is prone to bouts of immaturity.”
Bennett: “IMMATURE?! You’re totally like not my friend anymore and like I’m never talking to you again! Oh, and I’m like gonna tell all my friends never to talk to again either!!”

Yeah he worked real hard at being 6’4″. Size and athletic ability is a gift. Without either one he would not be a professional athlete. That’s not to say he doesn’t have to work hard, but yeah he was gifted more than most.

Ahhh, I get it now. You’re one of those infowars type. How sad it is to live in conspiracy land. Enjoy your rabbit hole though.

  21. I see why Bennett might be a little irritated with the report, as he did call Michael Bennett’s entire character into question just for being immature at times. However, I can’t really disagree with the idea that Michael may not be the best messenger for this cause.

Aside from his football skills, Michael made a name for himself with goofy antics and saying crazy things. It becomes difficult to take a man like that seriously when he starts talking about real issues that matter to him; the line between silly and serious gets kinda blurred at that point.

Weird way to start your “logical” argument…

If all cops were racist murderers it would completely validate Kaep’s position. The police are a publicly funded service, you know.

Throwing out the words logic and common sense doesn’t strengthen your argument if you’re not using either of them.

Nope, Alex Jones is a phony!

Now back to your fake news on the tv…

  24. It’s too bad Bennett can’t play offensive line. The Seahawks would be better off investing in that than in old, overpaid blowhard loudmouths.

    2017 NFC West Standings
    1. Cardinals 11-5
    2. Seahawks 9-7
    3. 49ers 7-9
    4. Rams 5-11

  25. BOTH BENNETT BROTHERS ARE FULL OF HOT AIR AND ARE IN LOVE WITH THEMSELVES AND ALWAYS COMPLAINING THAT THEY ARE UNDERPAID.

I WISH ALL MEDIA OUTLETS WOULD BAN THEM BOTH.
