Saints see “same old” Adrian Peterson

AP

Fullback John Kuhn saw a lot of Adrian Peterson while Kuhn was with the Packers watching Peterson run against the Green Bay defense as a member of the Vikings.

The two players are now part of the same backfield in New Orleans, something Kuhn said on Thursday that he dreamed about while standing on the opposite sideline. Kuhn also said that Peterson looks like that player despite the passage of time and accumulation of injuries over the years.

“He looks the same way he looked when I was watching him from the other sideline for all those years,” Kuhn said, via ESPN.com. “He looks like the same old AP, and I’m just excited to see him in the same team colors.”

One difference from the “same old AP” in Thursday’s practice was the way he factored into the offense as a receiver, something he didn’t do much in Minnesota. Coach Sean Payton said he looked comfortable and was “on top of the protections,” which are important traits for Peterson to have if he’s going to play a lot in an offense with Drew Brees at quarterback.

Peterson’s presence at the workouts also represented a different approach from the one he usually took with the Vikings as Peterson would often work out on his own during the voluntary stages of the offseason program. That’s likely part of the reason why Payton says the veteran has “picked things up well” and the Saints will hope that all continues to run smoothly once they’re doing more than running plays against air.

  1. I wish him the best. But as a Vikes fan who has watched him in the passing game I wouldn’t expect to much. It’s just not his strong point and I find it hard to think he suddenly will become a great pass catcher at this stage of his career. I still don’t think the Saints are a good fit for him. I suspect he signed the only offer he got knowing that waiting until after a deep RB class draft would only bring lower offers.

  2. I hate to say it as a Vikings fan, but this is for the best. He needed a fresh start. The team needed to build a passing attack. He has a couple of real good years left. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him lead the league in rushing this year. Good luck AP and thanks for the memories.

  3. Hopefully you bed-wetting skoltrolls living in your Grandma’s basement or trailer, are respectful enough to let her know to keep plenty of plastic mattress covers on hand prior to that 1st MNF game.

  4. Everyone can look great when you’re not hitting or going full speed.

AP must be feeling a little desperate if he is now showing up for voluntary workouts when he didn’t used to do that before.

  5. Saints see “same old” Adrian Peterson = He averaged less than 2 yards per carry, fumbled, got hurt, and then refused to play anymore. Yep, sounds like the same old AP, emphasis on the “old” part.

  6. The Saint’s biggest fear is getting the “same old” Adrian Peterson; whipping his children bloody, fumbling in the big spots and failing to win a playoff game more than once in his career. He is a horrible human being but once a great RB with the key word being “once”.

When was the last time the “Vikes” had a passing game?

  8. I wondered from the start how he will fit into the Saints’ scheme. AP dictated which offensive sets they would run in Minnesota, but they obviously won’t do that for him in New Orleans.

  9. He looked the same? So he fumbled, ran the wrong route, and blew his coverage assignment getting the QB sacked? Or did he take the wrong gap and ran into the thickest set of d linemen?

  10. Yeah, he looks amazing until the games start. Then you’ll wonder why he can’t gain more than two yards at a time, hold on to the ball, or block anybody. I’ve heard it the last three years.

  11. Unending respect for AP, but when I read the comment about his blocking skills I had to respond. He ALWAYS looked great in shorts and in training camp catching balls and picking up blitzes. However, when the lights come on AP is all about running the ball. I don’t know if it is lack of focus on the anything but rushing, he will just get himself out of position and give up a big sack or drop the wide open pass. Not saying he can’t do those things, and maybe now that he knows he HAS to do those thing he will focus and do what he is capable. Wish him the best of luck, just starting with week 2.

  12. Until the Saints can use him as a run threat from the shotgun I will remain unimpressed

  13. Uh, the reason he only averaged 2 ypc is that Minnesota has no passing game and the defenders were stacking the box. The Saints have a “slightly” better passing game so I would think that would increase his ypc.

  14. Vikings are gonna see the ‘same old’ AP too! He’s going to truck over them as Brees throws for 5 TDs!

    Saints 49
    Vikings 20

  15. “Same old”? Should I be reading that as ‘same’ or ‘old’?

Nor would I expect too much as a Vikings fan period…….

  17. I love the Viking fans criticizing him in the passing game. In what passing offense where they throw the ball to the backs was he in? That rock star Bill Musgrave one that fits on a note card? Or how about the Norv offense that didn’t throw it to a Hall of Fame RB in Emmit or Ricky Williams either? Or maybe that Pat Shurmur one that he played all of like 15 downs in? So please tell us. Show a little class for one of the greatest players in your history and stop acting like he wasn’t great with you while the rest of your team stunk. Hopefully he can end his career with a ring and doesn’t end up like poor Calvin Johnson who gave his body to a bad franchise that also acts like he wasn’t great for them despite the rest of the team’s struggles.

Yet another packer admitting they really wanted to be on the Vikings.

  19. Can you imagine how exciting it must be Adrian to finally be on a team with a championship pedigree, and no longer stuck on the bottom feeder of his division?

  20. Saints fans are DELUSIONAL! Yea, AD was fantastic. WAS. Do you really think he’s the same Adrian and the rest of the league simply got it wrong in free agency? And yes, the Saints have a much, much, much better passing attack than he ever had with the Vikings. He still can’t pass protect and can’t run out of shotgun.

  22. That’s where the problem lies, imo. The “old” AP couldn’t pass block or catch and as many others have said, I don’t see him adding those abilities this late in his career. But good luck to him and my Saints nonetheless

  23. Or did he take the wrong gap and ran into the thickest set of d linemen?

Yeah I’m sure that’s how he became one of the best RBs in league history smh

You guys really start drinking early in NO.

  29. The important thing is the Saints will have a winning season with or without AP’s help. There are two other great running backs on the team as well.

Thanks for this comment, Ragnar. I’ve noticed through the years that whenever a player leaves New Orleans for a new destination Saints fans wish that player well and thank him for his contributions. All too often fans just spew out bile to a guy they used to cheer for. It’s refreshing to read a sincere comment as opposed to all this other nonsense. Skol! And Who Dat!
