Zack Martin sees Tyron Smith as the perfect left tackle

The Cowboys’ offensive line is probably the best in the NFL, but to hear guard Zack Martin tell it, one player stands above the rest.

Martin describes left tackle Tyron Smith as “an absolute monster” and thinks you couldn’t create a better left tackle if you tried.

“We always joke, if God had to make a left tackle he would make him like Tyron Smith,” Martin said on the HawkCast. “Just massive, long. He’s 320, he’s got a six-pack. It’s just not fair. He’s super durable and he just erases that defensive end from other teams every game. When he gets his hands on you, it’s pretty much over. The best thing about Tyron is he works harder than anyone.”

Smith was only 20 years old and still a little raw when Jerry Jones took him with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, but Jones saw the same things that Martin sees every day: Smith is a unique talent.

  1. 320lb men with long strong arms should not be able to move like Tyron Smith does. When he came out of USC, it was obvious that if he could grasp what he had to do as a LT and had a work ethic, he would be a top 5 LT in the NFL (and likely the best at some point).

His level of physical freakishness is similar to Julio Jones’ at WR. Or Patrick Peterson’s at CB. Or Cam Newton’s at QB.

  2. He’s very good. I’d say the best in the league right now. He’s not perfect. Brandon Graham has gotten the better of him a few times.

  3. Tyron is the best LT in the league and it isn’t close. Leave it to a philthy fan to put a underachiever like graham in the same sentence as Tyron, shame on you troll.

  4. Brandon Graham was 2nd team Associated Pres All-Pro last year and 1st team PFF All-Pro(their 9th rated overall player). Shame on you, ignoramus.

    We’re getting a bit defensive, aren’t we.
Do you know what a troll is? The guy said Smith is probably the best in the league. I think it would do you a world of good to wait until after your 13th birthday before you post inane comments. The odds of you making a fool of yourself might be reduced.

I’ll agree he’s very good and probably in the top 5 but he does get away with a lot with the Ref’s with all that Cowboy hype.

Then that makes Olivier Vernon the one of best DE in the league because he gives Smith a lot of trouble. If you don’t believe me check the the tape.

  9. Lot of haters out today. I dont know if Smith is the consensus best LT or not, and I don’t care. He’s an incredible player, young, and under a cap friendly long term contract. I’m glad he plays for my team, and I know fans whose team have to play against him, get frustrated and talk a lot of trash. That’s all I need to know about him

  10. Vernon had a good game against him in 2015, but in 2016 Smith shut him down. Besides his freakish ability, Smith is a hard worker, and it’s not unrealistic to think he studied the film and learned from his mistakes.

Graham played well against him last year, but if memory serves correctly Smith missed the following two weeks with injury. Graham’s a good player, but he isn’t 2 sacks against a “healthy Tyron Smith good.”

  11. 2011 was a great draft unless you were reaching for a QB.

I was hoping the Giants would trade up for Smith. I hoped but didn’t think Pouncey would fall to them but the reality was Solder.

I thought the Patriots would take Amukamara (they took Dowling at the top of round 2). So I was bummed.

So tired of the Giants and their so-so OL. They won 2 SB’s with so-so lines and that becomes a double edged sword.

The real lesson that is lost year in and out is reaching for Qb’s when there is that much talent on the board.

  12. There not much to like about the Cowboys, but from a fan of football’s standpoint, you have to love how that o-line plays. Smith sets the tone for their entire offensive game. It’s a pleasure to watch them against a team other than mine.

6.5 sacks and 0 against the Cowboys last year….yep, he is well on his way to Canton.

  15. When you watch Tyron, watch his footwork. He mirrors the defensive end, so he doesn’t get around him and that’s one aspect that makes him great.

Have you guys ever heard of Joe Thomas? 7 time all pro, 10 time pro bowl and has never missed a snap. Smith is good don’t get me wrong
    —————————–

Joe Thomas is fantastic. He’s declined the past few years as Tyron Smith has ascended. It just sucks that he has to play for the Browns while no one else on that team will play for him. How many winning seasons has he been a part of? There was also a time where Thomas and Jake Long where neck and neck for the best tackle in the league and Long has declined drastically.

Right now, Smith is the better tackle. They’re just a generation apart. Thomas is passing his prime as Smith is entering his.

  17. Tyron is a great tackle in his prime and the reason the Eagles drafted Barnett. Can just fast forward to the start of the season already.

He really hasn’t. That’s what makes him a HOFer. Never missing a game and maintaining the same high level of play he always has.
