Sean McDermott “not into” declaring Bills offseason winners

The Bills have a new coach this season and Sean McDermott is different from their last coach in several ways, including his taste for offseason braggadocio.

Rex Ryan had quite the appetite for it with the Jets and he didn’t lose it when he took the Buffalo job, as evidenced by last summer’s declaration that the Bills “won the offseason.” The fact that Ryan is no longer coaching the team is a pretty good indication of how much that was worth and McDermott didn’t bite when he was asked if he’d make the same statement this year.

“I don’t know if we’ve won the offseason. I’m not into that,” McDermott said, via the Buffalo News. “I’m into the process, and I’m into where we are in our process and focused intently and only right now on that. It’s important that we win off the field first. That’s how you set yourself up to win on the field. Now we handle this time off the field with class, No. 1, and then we put in the work to earn the right to win as a football team, myself included. That’s what I expect. The players know that, the coaches know that.”

In addition to hiring McDermott, the Bills made a change at General Manager and brought in several new defensive backs to fit McDermott’s defensive scheme. If those things should lead to an improvement on the in-season results that Ryan brought to Buffalo, that will be enough to make the offseason a winner for the Bills.

  1. I like his tone much more than Sexy Rex’s/ Mr Tire Fire. I hope he delivers the goods on the field as well.

  2. Losing Gilmore and Gillislie to the Patriots is not “winning”.

Your point? McDermott did not say anything about offseason championships. All he did was imply that he expects his team to put in the work and effort off the field to be successful on the field.

  3. “Yeah, but I totally won that bar fight against like 8 Navy SEALs.” — Rex

  4. Ryan was a “Manchurian Candidate” to exact revenge on the Pegulas for their “winning” bid.

  5. the Bills are probably good for 2 additional wins just by canning Rex and Rob.

As a Patriots fan, it seems the Bills are finally headed in the right direction. It will be interesting to see how players that played under Rex will respond, over the course of the entire season, to a new discipline/attitude. I suspect most will adjust well, but there is the possibility that some won’t.

If the coaching staff can filter out, during the preseason, the guys that possibly won’t adjust well, it will be a big plus for the team.

In any event I’m looking forward to the games, rather than the sound bites leading up to the games.

Good luck Bills fans, just not against us.

  6. “I think the Patriots won the offseason”

Belichick and the Pats don’t care about winning anything but the actual games that count.

Like what I’m seeing from the Bills this offseason. It was time for them to shake things up in a big way.

Losing Rex was winning. And for the Patriots having Rex leave the AFC East is losing. Lets face it, Rex Ryan was a blessing for the Patriots for how long he kept not one but two division rivals off their list of things they needed to worry about while at the same time providing all kinds of hilarious (from the NE point of view) entertainment.

Thanks, same to you. That is one thing I always liked about you, you are classy. Harrisonhits2 is another classy Patriots fan. Best of luck to you guys.

  9. I think the Bills are again heading in the right direction. While I was pleased that neither Trump or Bon Jovi ended up buying the team, the Sabres under Pegula’s ownership have a big fat “Did Not Qualify” for the playoffs in a sport where too many teams qualify. If Terry leaves the operation to football men I will feel better. Let’s hope the crew in there now is the right crew and Terry leaves them alone to do their job.

Thank you. I try to be objective when I post on non-Patriots articles…..however I do reserve the right to stoop to the lowest levels when commenting on Steelers articles; It’s just too fun not to.

  11. Class and Buffalo are two words that simply do not go together.

    Just lose baby.
