The Cardinals will have an interesting training camp battle between two players they hope never see the field. Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert will compete for the job behind starting quarterback Carson Palmer.

Considering Carson is 38 and entering his 14th season, the Cardinals could choose to keep both backups on the 53-player roster. Coach Bruce Arians said the decision about how many quarterbacks to keep will depend on whether the third quarterback is better than another reserve at another position.

Who’s the best player, regardless of position?” Arians said, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. “Obviously, he’s not going to help special teams, and if you think there’s one you really, really like for the future [you keep him].”

Stanton has served as the team’s backup the past four seasons, while Gabbert signed with the Cardinals on May 11.

The Cardinals started four quarterbacks in 2012 and three in 2014, but Palmer has started all but one game the past two seasons.

  1. Honest to God Though, This is going to be a battle. Stanton is so well versed and has elite intangibles/experience in the league/system, blaine is a natural thrower with great physical traits and is an athlete also is very intelligent in terms of raw mental intelligence… I dont even know who I would take out of the two.

  2. Stanton is actually a decent NFL QB. Gabbert is just a bit shy of an NFL caliber QB. Gabbert could be an emergency #3 guy if the price is right. All three are good guys.

  3. If Arizona actually puts in the work of doing some coaching with Gabbert and does not just treat him like a camp arm, this could be interesting.

Guy has never really had a competent NFL staff around him before. The crapfest in Jax and the one two punch of Tomsula and Chipper in SF are enough to make anyone look bad I guess.

    That’s pretty funny…

  5. Carson Palmer is 37 NOT 38, I swear every article I read try’s to make him 1-2yrs older.

Anyway I hope QB Blaine Gabbert wins out as the backup QB. Gabbert is only making 885K this year compared to Millions for Stanton & Gabbert is a better QB with a much higher ceiling in Arians offense.

  6. I would keep them both. The statue took a beating last year and supposedly contemplated retirement. Those thoughts could have been embellished by high expectations followed by a dismal season. I’m sure the $15.5 mill and $2 mill roster bonus this year helped with the decision to stay. I hope he stays upright and healthy.

  7. I don’t know why when people talk about the Cardinals in 2016, they never mention the fact that their offensive line was ripped apart by injuries for virtually the entire season….and it wasn’t just scrub offensive lineman…..it was Jared Veldheer and Mike Iupati…

Only silver lining is the fact that DJ Humphries looked great when switched to left side, and now he’s a year old, and more seasoned and Veldheer and Iupati will be back….as well as Smoke Brown…

This is going to be a much more explosive Cardinal offense in 2017
