Julian Edelman says talk about going 19-0 is stupid

The Patriots have won two of the last three Super Bowls to push their total to five during the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady era and leave them with few boxes unchecked on the list of team accomplishments.

The most obvious of those boxes would be an undefeated season, something the patriots almost pulled off in 2007 by winning 18 straight games before losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. After an offseason spent adding veteran pieces to the mix, the Patriots are favored in Vegas to win the Super Bowl again this year and are early favorites in every regular season game, leading some to wonder if this is the year the team will go 19-0.

Wide receiver Julian Edelman has no interest in such discussions.

“You can’t worry about what other people say, honestly,” Edelman said, via Adam Kurkjian of the Boston Herald. “I mean, there’s no script to this thing. There’s no camera. This isn’t Hollywood. This is real life. When you go out and play in the National Football League, it’s one of those things where it’s even stupid to think about that. It’s never been done. You don’t really want to talk about it. My focus is more on trying to get ready for the season, trying to learn your teammates, form your identity. [The 19-0 talk is] stupid. That’s it.”

Having to answer questions about whether or not your team can go undefeated is a pretty nice problem to have, especially when it’s a team like the Patriots that’s proven quite adept at brushing past the kinds of things that might be called distractions for other teams.

    1. They are a great team to start with with
    2. The division they play in is beyond pitiful so they will be able to rest injured guys without fear of losing at least 6 games.
    3. The secondary is going to be ridiculous which bodes well for a team always ahead.

Once a cheater, always a cheater.

    ————————————————

    Where did they cheat?

    1. Footballs naturally deflate in cold damp weather. That was proven to be the cause. NFL even admitted under oath there was no evidence of tampering with Footballs. But Aaron Rogers admitted on national tv to tampering with footballs but no one is labeling him a cheater….humm…wonder why?

    2. Prior to Goodell no rule was enforced outside of the actual rule book. The memo Goodell sent told teams of a different location to film from, again up until that point only the actual rule book is where the rules were. Goodell failed to update the rule book. Patriots were just a few feet away from the new location. They didn’t cheat, all teams film.

So many misconceptions out there….it really does make people who make comments like these show their ignorance to what really happened.

  11. well they might if they play the falcons every week, but now that shanahan is in SF, maybe we should say if they play the 49ers……bottom line they will lose in Mexico…tom brady can’t handle lasers in his eye’s

  14. Injuries can derail anything-but barring that, they will be in the AFC championship game

19-0 would be fascinating. As we all know, the 1972 Dolphins are somewhat tainted because they played an incredibly soft schedule and the only existing film footage of the season is grainy black and white film with organ music playing in the background.

  15. Cheats? When? Spygate – After the Fall 2006 video memo Tagliabue tells Pats such taping would still be ok under the new rule after the Jets were caught doing the exact same sideline-taping of the Pats. The reason being the Jets said they wouldn’t use the video in-game. Then 15 mins into 2007 the Pats camera was confiscated and Goodell retrospectively re-invents the rule, saying any use was wrong (in-game or not). Even if you believe the Pats were guilty, their first 3 SBs came before the rule existed.

As to Deflategate, that fell apart when the NFL admitted to Judge Berman that they had no evidence. The 2nd court didn’t rule on Brady’s guilt, just on Goodell’s rights under the CBA to arbitrate his own decisions and suspend as he sees fit. Phone? NFLPA tells players not to hand them over. Brady offered logs saying they’d prove the NFL had all the texts already, but Goodell said logs were inadmissable – the same Fraudger who accepted such logs in Zeke Elliott’s situation. So I ask again salty haters, where’s your evidence?

Enough already with the pitiful division crap. It isn’t just false it is beyond lame and almost as weak as the pathetic losers whining about cheating. The Patriots are located in Mass, what northern or eastern division do you think would give that juggernaut a harder time? According to PFF the Pats winning pct with Brady under center are .786 AFCE, .828 AFCN, .875 NFCN and .818 NFCE. Which of those divisions would you prefer to see them in? Maybe that .786 suddenly isn’t looking all that bad after all, you should be thankful the Pats are in the AFCE. They could be owning your division instead. As a fan of another team in the AFCE I respect what New England has done even if I do sometimes resent that they have done it while playing here. You shouldn’t disrespect us or kid yourself. The Patriots are the best run organization in pro sports. Year in and year out they win, it’s who they are and what they do. The on field results clearly show if they played in another division they would only do more of it.

I find it really hard to buy the weight loss explantion for that comment. But since it is but a single comment made (not a nickname, just one word used in just one comment) months before during the offseason prior to when he started working with the team I can at least know for sure that it wasn’t about tampering with footballs.

  32. Yes Mr. Edelman it is stupid talk . However , unlike the Colts who were 14 1/2 – 0 and stopped trying . A disgraceful act for which they got their just reward against the fabulous New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl. I guarantee you fans out there that the Patriots will try . They will not be 14-0 or 15 -0 and put in the second team as the Colts did.

  33. I would prefer the Pats rest the starters in the second half all the way through the season so they are ready for the playoffs.

Leave the regular season for the Bills and the games that count for the Patriots.

  34. Every team in the NFL–including the Cleveland Browns– would be dynastic if you could guarantee them a victory on the turnover line each game

    Not the Patriots!

Not when the 2nd-sting Flanker for your local High School Frosh team could just as easily catch the loaf of white bread that passes for a football each Sunday when the Patriots take the field

    #ThePatriotWay

  35. I could realistically see the Pats finishing 16-3 with another super bowl win. They have proven to be winners against bird teams in the super bowl against teams such as the Eagles, Falcons, and Seahawks. The Raiders are a joke and unless I see the Broncos’ defense returning to its 2015 form with a better quarterback next season, they’re going nowhere.

The Texans just need a better quarterback but at the end of the day, Belichick and Brady just have their number overall. I predict the Packers will still have a weak defense next season against playoff-caliber offenses despite it being a bit improved, and I’ll be shocked if the Cowboys finish with the same record next season. The NFC is a bit of a toss up.

The best way to beat the Pats is to put pressure in Brady’s face from start to finish like the 07 and 11 Giants. However, no modern team seems to be capable of doing that with a good offense at the same time.

  36. We already heard and are hearing a lot of talking. Look at the Falcons. Did it bring home the Lombardi? Let your play do the talking. Works for the Patriots.

  37. Their average for the past 7 years is 12.8 and 3.2. This team is much better and Brady has gone 29-6 the past 35 games and they will be better this year.

  38. I would think The Patriots don’t put a lot of thought into the undefeated thing as it has already been done. What they covert is Superbowls. At the end of the day that’s how they and everybody else be judged. Regarding this years Patriots, imo they got some better players in on top of being by miles the best team last year but that has never guaranteed anything. Will be interesting to see if they still have that edge.

  40. “Its never been done before.” We get it pats fans, you cant stand that your modern day little brother has something on you that was so close but yet so far from your grasp.

A perfect season has been done before. 19-0 hasn’t and no one would ever argue that fins’ perfect season would trump a modern day 19-0, but to in any way insinuate that the dolphins’ perfect season is “tainted” is an absolute joke.

If it was anything but exceedingly difficult to post a perfect season with a “soft schedule” it would’ve been done more than once. Pats fans are very quick to roll their eyes at those that try to devalue their championships (for whatever reason, be it cheating allegations, soft division, soft conference, elite qb that accepts drastically below market pay etc) yet whenever they can use the same logic as a sword they don’t hesitate to do so.

Even if the “soft schedule” compromises the 72 perfect season in any way, what about the flip side of that coin? Do the fins ever get “additional” credit for winning every single regular season game and playoff game that year with their back up qb who was so inferior in talent to griese that griese got the start for the superbowl? No they dont. Because engaging in that sort of “what if” analysis is a waste of time.

When you win every game the facts speak for themselves. Thats what makes the record so great. If the pats happen to do it, I have absolutely no doubt that their fans would expect the same treatment so perhaps you should consider showing due respect for the greatest record in sports if you truly expect your team will break it one day.

  41. You losers that can’t get over the success of the Pats are just as pathetic as the democrats losing.

I find it really hard to buy the weight loss explantion for that comment.

Why? There was a weight loss program among the coaches at the time. He was talking about how he wanted to get some exercise shoes. He wasn’t talking about footballs at all.

You want to do a Google search and see how many times the word “deflate” is used as a synonym for taking off weight? It’s out there and it’s reasonably common for bodybuilders and weightlifters.

One text does not make much of a conspiracy, esp. one that doesn’t even mention footballs.

And there’s another text message in which the same guy uses the word “deflate” to refer to his buddy getting rid of a puffy parka. Somehow the NFL ignored that one.

  45. * They have won ZERO Super Bowls during the Belicheat/Brady era without widespread cheating. You forgot that part.

  65. The 2007 season was fun, but there was no way they were going to pull off 19-0. There was 19-0 talk after their 9th win of the season and every game after that they carried a huge bulls eye on their back and took everyone’s best shot. It wasn’t just Tyree who made an impossible catch against them. Did you see that catch by a Jacksonville WR in the divisional round? Every opponent played the Patriots with house money, with nothing to lose and everything to win. And each game took a little out of the Patriots. 67. @ aarons444
That’s one reason why I love football, the stats and pro bowls don’t always tell the story. The sum of the parts is lesser than the whole. This past year’s team would have beaten the 07 team. And I have always and continue to believe that the 04 Pats (my now second favorite Pats team of the BB era)would ALSO have beaten the 07 Pats. The 04 Pats were very good at everything, but not the best at anything. They proceeded to beat the highest scoring team in the NFL and the best points allowed defense in the NFL back to back in the 04 playoffs while sporting guys like Earthwind Moreland, Hank Poteat and Randall Gay in their defensive backfield. And it’s likely only a Pats fan could name more than 1 of their WR that year too.

The 2016 Pats took that to the next level by having 0 all pros/pro bowlers etc on defense but being either the best or second best (to 03) BB defense ever. Imagine having your best non QB on offense missing the back half of the season and not even missing him(Gronk). Scary resilience and toughness by the 2016 squad. Losing Gronk by having him at a very low % in the SB KILLED them in 2011.

  68. I don’t agree with you at all.

I think the 2007 Patriots would beat most of the teams I’ve seen in my lifetime as a football fan (mid 80’s-present)

Patriots V Patriots comparisons aren’t worth conversation, IMO. Belichick V Belichick???… heads would expolde.. the universe would implode!

  69. .. in light of what the Pats have accomplished, the undefeated regular season is nothing to be ashamed of.

If that 2007 team had been a 1-year-wonder like the Greatest Show on Turf, or the ’85 Bears, or 2000 Ravens, yeah, not winning a Title that year is a real shame. Thats not the case though. 2007 is between 5 Super Bowl wins.

As a Packer fan, I see 2007 as further testament to the greatness of Belichick, Kraft and that organization. 2007 stands right with the 5 Championship teams, as far as I’m concerned.

That 07 team really lost steam as the year went on. They struggled to beat a bad Ravens and Eagles team. Their playoff game vs SD was close to a loss. They were gassed mentally and physically, and it showed in the SB. Even BB has his limits. 🙂 😉

TB had a better int. to TD ratio last year than he did in 07 too.

  71. They don’t need to go 19-0. Just another ring will suffice for the soon to be 6 time World Champions 🙂

A Super Bowl win allows them to claim a dynasty as that will be 3 titles in 4 years.

A Super Bowl win makes them the only team in history with the same QB and coach to claim two dynasties to bookend a time period of 10 years.

This will lay claim to the greatest team in football and maybe all of sports history.

Patriot Hater can lie, deny and cry all they want. 🙂 Facts are facts and that won’t change. 🙂

    All hail the kings.

    🙂

18-1, and everyone can thank my Giants for that! 0-2 versus Eli Manning. XD

I prefer to live in the present not the past. And as of the present it is interesting to note that the Giants have precisely zero wins against the World Champion Patriots in more than 5 years. 🙂

Admittedly… a rematch again would be delicious. We shall see. 🙂

Patriots lose their first game, never recover and go 0 – 19.

Now that’s the kind of league for the Jets! Play 3 playoff games and get a bye even if you don’t win any!

    🙂

Did Bruce Arians become the coach of the Pats? What I miss?
