How much will Edelman injury hurt the Patriots?

AP

If the Patriots’ fears are realized regarding the knee injury suffered on Friday night by receiver Julian Edelman, it provides a blow to the popular belief that, a year from now, the Pats will be handing Banner No. 6. But it’s hardly a devastating one.

The Patriots have a bevy of other offensive weapons, a plethora of brainpower when it comes to deploying them, and a quarterback who is the best to ever play the game — and who is still at the top of his game even at 40. Yes, it will hurt to lose Edelman for the season, if that’s what happens. But the Patriots will adjust, as they always do. And they will thrive, as they always do.

But it won’t be easy or automatic.

“We’ve played together for a long time,” quarterback Tom Brady told reporters after the game. “I think there is great chemistry in what we are doing and he is just an incredible player and teammate and we’re all hoping for the best. Hopefully he can, you know, hopefully whatever tests they have to do, come back positively. We’ll try to do our best to kind of, you know, lift his spirits if we can and see what happens.”

If Edelman is out, the Patriots will need to replace Edelman in the slot. It’s likely a role that will be filled by multiple receivers, especially since they have so many who can do it — even if none can do it as well as Edelman.

Last year, the Patriots got to the Super Bowl and won it without tight end Rob Gronkowski. So the Edelman injury is hardly insurmountable.

But with the start of the regular season still two weeks away, it’s a stark reminder of how injuries can change everything for any team, including the presumptive Super Bowl LII champions.

  1. Big loss no doubt, however the Patriots will overcome this by using a combination of Lewis, White, and Amadola in the slot. This also opens the door for Austin Carr.

  2. and a quarterback who is the best to ever play the game

You should preface your opinions with “I believe” or “in my opinion”. This is hardly a fact. Brady is the best QB to run the Patriots system, which every other QB, even those who didn’t deserve to play in the NFL, found success in. There’s a reason why the Patriots went 11-5 with Matt Cassell at QB and the offense was still a top 5 scoring unit and top 8 total offensive unit.

  3. The Patriots use quick routes and QB release,to offset the pass rush, and Edelman is the cornerstone of all of it. It’s a far more significant blow than losing Gronk. If you don’t believe me, look what happened a couple years ago when Jules injured his foot. They lost 4 of their last 6, fell out of homefield advantage, limped into the playoffs, and got their asses handed to them. It helps that Scarnecchia came back out of retirement after that 2015 season and Amendola and Hogan are both capable (if inconsistent), but make no mistake this injury is devastating. The only player more valuable is #12.

  4. When opportunity comes your way be ready to take full advantage. I’m talking to you, Austin Carr.

  5. This is a bummer. Even after he fights back, and he will, after what we’ve already seen with Lewis, Brady, and Welker, it’s clear it can take two years to get back to being effective especially the way Edelman plays. Grind it out Jules!

  6. It sucks but the pats are notorious for finding talent. They will be fine.

  7. Doesn’t matter…

AFC Playoff QBs: Brady, Alex Smith, Texans QB, Back Up Raiders QB, Back Up Dolphins QB, Bum Rothlisberger…

NFC Playoff QBs: MVP Ryan, Best player in last year’s draft Dak, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning..

Over the past few years, the best QB the Patriots have had to face in the playoffs is Bum Rothlisberger… Majority of the better QBs play in the NFC…

Do you really think the Patriots win their division 15 straight years if they played in the same division as a team with another juggernaut QB?

  8. You just don’t replace a Julian Edelman he was Tom’s security blanket. Edelman is tough as nails he was New England’s leading receiver and the NFL’S LEADING WR in yards per game since week 10 of 2016 including the playoffs with 99.1. This unfortunate injury is a huge loss for the Patriots

  9. They are not (or were not) the presumptive SB champs. Not a down has been played in the regular season and I hate when pundits start trying to handicap a season before it does. You can’t even start talking about who is who until mid-season, because 1) you haven’t seen anyone play at full speed or strength (it takes a while even after Week 1 for teams to gel) and 2) INJURIES. It’s why I hate Power Rankings. Plus you’re making an assumption that Brady, at 40 won’t have that huge drop off most QBs see at his age. Now the dink and dunk doesn’t have his favorite target. Why don’t we wait to see what happens on the field before we anoint ourselves Football Oracles.

  10. As a Bills fan, I’m elated!
The Pats should only crush us by 40 points instead of 45….in the first half.

Seriously, hoping Edelman can resume his career at 100%.

  11. The question is: what is the trickle-down effect, and what will McDaniels do about it? The answer is: you will get more formation looks, more out-of-the-backfield throws, and a Cooks-stretched field to make it easier for Amendola and others. This is not a OMG moment.

Edelman is money. Money talks. We’ll see what account Belichick opens up, but I am sure he has adequate funds to cover.

  12. .
The Patriots offense runs on their ability to convert on third and six. It allows them to establish long drives which eat up the clock. Edelman was key in that process. He required other teams to account for him at all times.

    The lame Matt Cassell argument

2 years later in KC he had a better season statistically and they made the playoffs what’s your excuse for that?

It’s funny how ALL these former and current players and current and former coaches call Brady one of if not the GOAT but what do they know, they only played or coached in the NFL.

They haven’t won their division 15 years straight, they’ve won it 8 straight. Ben Roethlisberger is a first ballot HoF QB, it is always amusing to see people dismiss him because they don’t like him and/or the Steelers but his resume speaks for itself. He is not Rodgers, Brees or Brady but he is right behind them. The Patriots have beaten Wilson and Ryan in the playoffs, it is not their fault Rodgers, Manning and Prescott didn’t get their teams to the Big Show. Your argument is silly on it’s face.

Edelman is a big loss. Brady’s comfort level with him is huge. Amendola is too fragile to take all the targets Edelman did and stay in one piece. White’s stock just went way up.

So they faced Big Ben, Peyton Manning, and Joe Flacco. All Super Bowl winning QB’s 5 Total. Eli, Rogers and Wilson have four. And they don’t have to play the Patriots, where those others with 5 have had to deal with New England. And we sa the difference in the two Seattle SUper Bowls. Manning loses 40something to 8. Brady leads epic 4th quarter comeback.

  16. Same people who said Edelman was an overrated system slot WR are now saying he was the greatest ever and the Patriots will go 0-16 without him. You are so boring.

  17. Knew it! Steeler fanboy scurried to his keyboard to fantasize about the pain this injury was causing the Patriots, who are the Steelers daddy. Couldn’t help himself!

I suspect if you look at the QBs in the AFC the Pats have played over the past 15 years you’ll find the NFC still lacking. And by quite a bit.

  21. The only concern is if this is the first in a series of many injuries. I remember two years ago when it seemed like every skill player on the offense (except Brady) got injured in the 2nd half.

  22. It will just drive Brady to win another SB for his best buddy. Next man up. That’s all. Last season the Pats lost Gronk and we worried about the loss of Chandler Jones and Collins but the Pats did o.k.— The Pats have good receivers lined up. Brady is Brady. He’ll drag those players to win.

I get it, like this….. “In my opinion I believe the sky is blue and water is wet”

Brady is the best to ever play the game.

  24. Losing Edelman stinks, but they have time to prepare and have additional players that know the system. It would have been worse if this happened after the cuts.

There’s also a reason why they played 0 playoff games that year. 🙂

End of argument, I win. Decisively. 🙂

Don’t be mad boy. It’s my duty. Facts and truth. And I ain’t going anywhere.

  28. The Patriots will have to go to a more balanced offense now. Although this year the Patriots actually have decent running back depth so they could do it. Edelman was Brady’s most reliable target since Wes Welker went to Denver so this will hurt, but this is the one year where it isn’t a killing blow to a Super Bowl opportunity as long as they have more balance on offense.

  29. This is a big loss for the Patriots, and you can’t automatically assume that someone else on the roster will seamlessly replace him. much as many Patriots fans hope so. Might happen, likely won’t.
That said, they are still likely going to be good. And that said, the larger question might be, will Father Time finally start catching up with Brady at age 40? Especially in light of the concussion rumors that have circulated concerning him this offseason? While he is certainly one of the all-time greats at the position, the aforementioned Father Time is still undefeated, and there have been very few successful NFL QB’s that were 40 or older. So I guess we’ll see…?!

While all true, it’s also possibly true that Tom Brady is simply a statistical outlier 🙂 No 6th round draft pick QB has ever done what he’s done nor ever will again. And I believe the same will be true about his longetivity. The man is extremely health conscious, knows how to stay healthy and strong even at 40 and I bet other QBs that play this sport are watching and will emulate.

Could be wrong but wouldn’t surprise me at all if I’m right. 🙂

Do you think Tom Brady uses PEDs? (Serious)

    ————–

That would be Peyton Manning who had PEDs shipped to his house.
    Nice try though!

  32. Let’s see how they operate without Edelman and Gronk, which you know they’ll have to do….

I’ll tell you how they’ll operate, they’ll win the division and at least make the championship game…
