The news that the Browns have made DeShone Kizer their Week One starting quarterback means Cleveland now has had a whopping 27 starting quarterbacks since the Browns franchise returned to the NFL in 1999.

Here’s the full list of Browns quarterbacks since they re-entered the league as an expansion team in 1999: Tim Couch, Ty Detmer, Doug Pederson, Spergon Wynn, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey, Brady Quinn, Bruce Gradkowski, Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Brandon Weeden, Thaddeus Lewis, Jason Campbell, Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw, Josh McCown, Austin Davis, Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler, DeShone Kizer.

That’s quite a list, featuring a current NFL head coach, multiple washed-up veterans, multiple first-round draft busts, and both McCown brothers.

With that list of quarterbacks, the Browns have yet to win a playoff team since returning to the NFL in 1999. Perhaps Kizer will be the quarterback to get them there.

  1. I’m not even convinced those arms are attached to his body. I think RGIII is hiding in his jacket.

  2. The odds of having that many duds are astronomical. Even winning the Powerball has better odds.

  3. The Raiders were as unlucky at QB between Rich Gannon and Derek Carr as Cleveland has been. One consolation for Browns fans is that their QB situation can’t be any worse than Denver’s currently is.

  4. I’ve never seen a team waste as many draft picks on guys with “Bust” written all over them as Cleveland has.

Perhaps you don’t remember a man named Matt Millen? Seriously, jabustus russell and the list goes on. Who cares how many QB’s Cleveland has had, the fact is, they are getting it right.

going to love watching our D against this kid twice this year.

I’m going to love watching the Browns defense against YOUR team this year. If OBJ and Brandon Marshall can’t take the hits we are putting out, I guarantee you A.J. Green and Tyler “Made of Glass” Eifert won’t be able to last against us.

  6. It just doesn’t matter how many came before. When we do finally hit on one all the others will fade into the mist. This regime has only been here since a little more than a year ago.

I don’t know if Kizer is it, I have my doubts frankl but I’m open to a pleasant surprise. The way they’re playing this is to find out in 1 year. Next year’s crop is considered a very good one and we sit with 5 picks in the first 2 rounds. It just doesn’t matter who came before. They’re doing this the right way.

  7. .

This is the Browns 2001 draft class. Tom Brady went to the Patriots @ #199.

1 Warren, Gerard DT Florida [3rd]
2 Morgan, Quincy WR Kansas [33rd]
3 Jackson, James RB Miami (Fla)[65th]
4 Henry, Anthony DB South Florida[97th]
5 Pharms, Jeremiah LB Washington [134th]
6 Jameson, Michael DB Texas A&M[165th]
7a Zukauskas, Paul OL Boston College[203rd]
7b King, Andre WR Miami (Fla)[245th]
    .

  8. If Kizer is mature enough to handle being a starting QB as a rookie, why not go with him? It’s not as if Osweiler or Kessler are in the Brown’s future plans, so if the kid can play now, let him do it.

  9. “This is the draft class in 2001 of the browns that tommy came out of.”

Actually, the GOAT was drafted in 2000 the year 6 QB’s were taken ahead of him INCLUDING the BROWNS FIRST OVERALL CHOICE TIM COUCH. close though 😉.

  10. Wait – is Rex Grossman still playing? If so, he needs to go to Cleveland to complete his plan to sign on to every team in the league.

  11. There are quarterbacks on that list that can lead you to 9+ wins a year if your franchise isn’t ineptly run. Perennially poor teams’ problems start at the top. The Browns are still the Browns, regardless of who is at QB. The obsession with rotating them in and out while rotating coaches almost as quickly is what keeps this team down, not the guy under center.

  12. Grossman did sign with Cleveland. He was a camp arm one year and never made it to the season. That’s embarrassing that it happened and that I know that off the top of my head.

  13. More than anything else, this list shows that a QB cannot make or break a team. It takes a lot of good players that are well coached. The Ravens won a SB with Trent Dilfer. Not because he was great but because they had a good team around him. Several of these other guys were decent QBs but since the team had nothing else they looked bad. I even think that Tim Couch was a good player. They ruined him by not having a decent Oline and some playmakers for him to work with.

  14. Don’t let the Browns having 27 QBs since 99 distract you from the fact that the Warriors and Indians blew 3-1 leads, the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead, the Monstars blew a 66-18 lead, and Hillary blew the election!!!

And during that draft you were screaming at your TV “pick Tom Brady, pick Tom Brady!”, right? Didn’t think so because no one was.

    What a pathetic franchise.
    ————————————
Actually still one of the most successful franchises. You must be 15 years old. Do good in school tomorrow.

  17. I can’t wait to see Kizer’s GOAT-Superman hybrid QB performances he will predicted he would produce this season against the starting first string defenses on their schedule.

Its one thing to shine against 3rd and 4th stringers or even rationalize and poo-poo the 28.2 QBR he posted against the Tampa Bay defensive starters, but with the on the field productions he has produced, does anyone seriously (outside of Cleveland and Osweiler haters) bet that Kizer is going to produce wins?

  18. The Browns are not an expansion franchise. The Baltimore Ravens are. The Browns officially suspended operations for three years. They are an unsuspended francise operating again. It is incorrect to call the 1999 Browns an expansion franchise. The Ravens are the expansion franchise using Browns 1995 players and coaches in 1996. This is a technicality, but true. Ravens = expansion. Browns = unsuspended.
