Lions trade former first-round pick Laken Tomlinson to 49ers for fifth-round pick

Laken Tomlinson was a bust for the Lions. Now the 49ers will hope they can get something out of him.

Tomlinson, a guard drafted by the Lions with the 28th overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, has been traded to San Francisco for a 2019 fifth-round pick, according to NFL Media.

That’s a disappointing return on investment for the Lions: When you draft a player in the first round, you’re hoping he’ll be a starter in Year 3, not hoping you’ll trade him for a fifth-round pick in Year 3. But given Tomlinson’s lack of production, at this point the Lions may just feel fortunate they can get anything for him at all.

Tomlinson has played in every game since the Lions drafted him, with 24 starts. But he wasn’t expected to start this year and may not have even made the roster at all. Now San Francisco will see if it can get more out of his talents than Detroit did.

  1. Always seemed like the perfect prospect. Too bad things didn’t work out. But yeah, this move at this time screams “wasn’t going to make the team anyways”…. best of luck Laken!

  2. Wow, a fifth for a first. It’s hard to determine what a player is worth when they’ve thrown in the towel. I wonder what my Packers could get for Aaron now that he says he’s OK with not winning.

  3. Don’t know what type of offense the Lions run but we’ve seen guards come from a traditional scheme and look like pro bowlers in a zone blocking scheme like the 9ers are now implementing. So maybe it works..

  4. Last 10 year of Detroits 1st Round picks. Not a good list
2007 2 Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech
2008 17 Gosder Cherilus OT Boston College
    2009 1 Matthew Stafford * QB Georgia
20 Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State
2010 2 Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska
    30 Jahvid Best RB California
2011 13 Nick Fairley DT Auburn
2012 23 Riley Reiff OT Iowa
2013 5 Ezekiel Ansah DE BYU
2014 10 Eric Ebron TE North Carolina
    2015 28 Laken Tomlinson G Duke
2016 16 Taylor Decker OT Ohio State
2017 21 Jarrad Davis LB Florida

  5. every team has first round busts from time to time. but it’s a sunk cost at this point. better to get something for him now rather than cut him

  6. Makes perfect sense to trade him for something if you are going to cut him in twodays anyway, and it also stops team from eating over 1 million dollars in cap space if cutting him

    Go Lions!!!

Low risk high reward… not a bad move for a rebuilding team

We have been rebuilding for 60 years dude, this doesn’t make me confident.

  8. Well no point in denying reality and hanging onto him when he wasn’t going to contribute to the team anyway. Millen or Mayhew might have done just that. Quinn has definitely shown a readiness to part quickly with players drafted by the former regime, regardless of draft status. The way I see it he wasn’t even going to be a backup. Lions top 4 guards are likely TJ lang, graham glascow, joe Dahl, and once Taylor decker is back Gregg Robinson would be kept on the roster for versatility as he has actually played decently at LT and has also played guard. So there was just no room for Tomlinson may as well pay someone else his contract who has a shot at making the active roster.

  9. The early rounds are the best way to get a great player. But you more than likely won’t. Its like needing to buy a lottery ticket to have any chance of winning, but you still probably won’t win.

Actually, only about 3 of those picks can be called garbage. A few the jury is still out on. The Lions actually do okay int the first round, the problem has been the following rounds. Hopefully that will change with Bob Quinn on board. We shall see.

I’m pretty sure that is a 9ers fan saying it is a low risk move for the 9ers, chief.

  12. Sounds like a win win. Detroit was able to get something in exchange for him. The Niners lost Garnett to Injury for the first few weeks and need depth at the position. The Niners also have 6 picks in the first 4 rounds of next years draft so giving up a 5th isn’t a big deal. Maybe he turns out to be good in the Niners zone blocking scheme – he seems like more of a fit in the Niners system.

    _____________

Good luck, I’ve seen this guy miss blocks so bad he didn’t even get a hand on the defender. Seems like it happened at least once, probably twice a game when he was in.

  14. Mayhew works in the 49er GM office as a consultant. He originally drafted this guy. Apparently he still thinks that he’s worth something. Niners’ G Garnett is out for a while, although even when he’s back he may also turn out to be a first round bust.

Worse investment than Detroit real estate.

Yet another example of your cluelessness. Detroit real estate is actually a great investment right now because the city’s making a comeback. That’s why people like Dan Gilbert are buying as much of it as they can

  16. So he’s played in every game and has 24 starts over 2 years as an offensive lineman and he SUCKS? What does that say about the Lions offensive lineman depth?

  17. Last 10 year of Detroits 1st Round picks. Not a good list
2007 2 Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech – Hall of famer
2008 17 Gosder Cherilus OT Boston College – 9 year career
2009 1 Matthew Stafford * QB Georgia – Highest paid player in NFL
20 Brandon Pettigrew TE Oklahoma State – Solid 7 year career derailed by injury
2010 2 Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska – Top 50 player in NFL
30 Jahvid Best RB California – Was a good player but will call him a bust – injuries
2011 13 Nick Fairley DT Auburn – Good player, still in the league…sort of
2012 23 Riley Reiff OT Iowa – Good player, just got a great contract from Vikes
2013 5 Ezekiel Ansah DE BYU – Excellent defensive end
2014 10 Eric Ebron TE North Carolina – Solid TE who’s production increases yearly
    2015 28 Laken Tomlinson G Duke – Garbage
2016 16 Taylor Decker OT Ohio State – Detroit’s LT for years to come
2017 21 Jarrad Davis LB Florida – Jury still out. Way too soon.

I dunno…looks like a decent job by Detroit in the 1st round to me. Not great, but pretty darn good.

I was referencing people buying when this player was drafted and now are having their homes sold for a dollar and back taxes. I hope you are correct on Detroit and it becomes revitalized (while avoiding the mistakes of the past when it comes to who they elect for Mayor).

    =====

Hard to believe a Matt Millen-hire was running the Lions drafts those seasons.

    There’s alot of talent there.

  21. Hey, SF gets depth and Detroit saves a million dollars in cap space by trading him and not cutting him. Smart move on both sides. He might even work as a run blocker. He was just a terrible pass blocker, and Detroit hasn’t had the best ground game as of late, in case anybody didn’t notice…LOL

In the end, I think Mayhew just really, really can’t accept missing out on a pick and is trying to salvage it.

  22. I think the Niners got a fifth rounder for Vance McDonald and a 7th rounder (not quite sure if it is 2018 or 2019 pick). So they it is like trading Vance McDonald and a seventh round pick for this OL.
