Week One power rankings

1. Packers (1-0): Maybe the defense is finally fixed.

2. Raiders (1-0): Marshawn Lynch is still Marshawn Lynch.

3. Chiefs (1-0): Alex Smith is no longer Alex Smith.

4. Cowboys (1-0): Dak Prescott is Dak Prescott 2.0.

5. Patriots (0-1): How many points would the Patriots have surrendered if Bill Belichick wasn’t a genius?

6. Seahawks (0-1): If they can’t run the ball, they can’t win on the road.

7. Falcons (1-0): To cure their Super Bowl hangover, the Falcons nearly ended up swigging a little Super Bowl hair of the dog.

8. Steelers (1-0): When Le’Veon said “I’mma need 17,” was he talking about yards?

9. Lions (1-0): Opposing defenses will soon be trying to figure out how to kill Kenny.

10. Eagles (1-0): Carson Wentz >> Kirk Cousins.

11. Jaguars (1-0): All those up-downs triggered a down-up for the Jags.

12. Dolphins (0-0): Few teams have encountered more adversity without playing a single game that counts.

13. Ravens (1-0): Four years after “In Ozzie We Trust,” they can finally trust in Ozzie again.

14. Vikings (1-0): It only took them a decade to realize they had too many eggs in Adrian Peterson‘s basket.

15. Broncos (1-0): The offense built a lead, and then the offense tried to blow the lead. That should go over well with the defense.

16. Buccaneers (0-0): Given what the Bucs have endured the past week (and given the softening nature of training camp), they may want to re-think the title of the Hard Knocks series.

17. Panthers (1-0): Christian McCaffery’s “batteries” could be the best way to stave off Cam Newton‘s Kryptonite.

18. Rams (1-0): The Rams nearly scored one point for every fan in attendance.

19. Titans (0-1): The meat-and-potatoes Titans are too good for game-opening gimmicks like a surprise onside kick.

20. Bills (1-0): It was just the Jets.

21. Cardinals (0-1): If the Cardinals lost their swagger last year in a Week One loss to the Patriots, what did the Cardinals lose this year in Detroit? (Beyond their star running back.)

22. Chargers (0-1): New city, same position in the AFC West standings.

23. Bears (0-1): There are no moral victories — except when there were only three actual victories a year ago.

24. Giants (0-1): Time for OBJ to get PĀD.

25. Washington (0-1): It’s good they have Scot McCloughan to fix the problems on the roster oh wait.

26. Saints (0-1): It looks like that string of three straight 7-9 seasons will indeed be broken.

27. Browns (0-1): For one day in September, the Factory of Sadness generated a batch of Sadness Lite.

28. Texans (0-1): Get used to the bottom five, until Duane Brown is among the top five among all offensive linemen salaries.

29. Bengals (0-1): Maybe we now know why they resisted trading A.J. McCarron.

30. Jets (0-1): When the Jets play in Oakland on Sunday, New York fans will be rooting for the CBS feed to switch to Heidi.

31. 49ers (0-1): The 49ers nearly scored one point for every fan in attendance.

32. Colts (0-1): Andrew Luck should refuse to play until he’s healthy enough to play . . . for another team.

    LOL! “King Me” (Checkers reference)
I’m a Pats fan but one that can laugh at a good joke.

  2. Seahawks and Packers are both too high. Chiefs earned the #1 spot for at least this week.

Sadness Lite. Get that expression trademarked asap, Mike.

  3. Eagles are better than the Cowboys and Wentz is better than Prescot and any knowledgeable fan would see this. Cowboys are that high after beating a lethargic giants O? Lmao.

  4. I know the Ravens still have a lot to prove, but the Jaguars, Dolphins, and Lions being ahead of them in Chazz Michael Michaels words, is mind bottling.

  5. Wentz is going to throw 20+ interceptions this season. At least 3 were dropped last week. Escapability is only cool if it’s not followed by a floater over the middle or some other shockingly bad decision.

  6. Falcons looked very rusty, as did 95% of other NFL teams.

As for the Packers ranked number 1 now?

Nahh I’d say the Cheifs for now.

Falcons will have something to add about that, come Sunday night.

  7. As a Patriots fan, I would NOT put them as high at #5. The Patriots defense if porous at best and the offensive is suffering from too many injuries to be effective.

I have to say, I love, love, love the “King Me” comment above.

I would have put the Chiefs at #1. They might not bee as good without Berry, but they played the best of any of the contenders. GB just was ok.

You obviously didn’t watch the GBgame….oh wait you did but were wearing yourPatriot bias shades….Seahawk defense is way better than KC.

  10. Check out the video of Marshawn Lynch running over DL Jurrell Casey and then a DB on the same play.

The YouTube title is BOOM!! BEAST MODE IS BACK.

  11. The Chiefs should be lower after losing Berry. They have no viable replacement and he was critical in their win.

  12. As a Pats fan I admit they should be a few spots lower but it is hard to find much momentum out of the top 5. Maybe the Jags? Kind of exciting to be honest, nice work there.

And that Niners remark is brutal, haha.

  13. I’d put Chiefs top or at least above Raiders – comfortably outplaying the Pats in Foxoboro on SB5 Banner night has to be a lot more impressive than beating the Titans by 10 where 12 points came from FGs (2 of which were 52yders).

  14. It was so nice to watch Marvin Lewis giggle through his press conference yesterday after witnessing the worst team performance I’ve ever seen in my life Sunday.

  15. The packers were not impressive at all. Everyone is severely over estimating the Seahawks. They have a Swiss cheese o-line and a terrible set of running backs that for some reason keep getting talked up and the packers barely beat them at home. KC is very clearly #1 after what they did this week. I don’t even think the packers were the most impressive NFC North team this weekend never mind most impressive in the league.

LOL no shot that happens. He’s a star in the making, and you’re a disgruntled Giants or skins fan. Reality is setting in.

  17. So we’ll discount the Vikings’ offensive performance because they played the historically awful Saints defense, but we’ll keep the Seahawks at #6 after they put up 9 points on the historically awful Packers defense?

  18. I don’t know how the Chiefs can go on the road and soundly defeat everyone’s number one team and then only be ranked third. I think you put the Packers first just so you could get more comments.

  19. The Packers aren’t a horrible choice for #1. If Berry didn’t get hurt KC would be there for sure, but this is a prediction game and it might hurt them on defense. No one else really blew anyone away with a good performance.

Sure, the Packers offense looked bad but everyone has rightfully been salivating about the Seattle defense. Sometimes the other team is really good too. Seattle o-line is bad but there’s many teams that wouldn’t have been able to get as much pressure.

It’s week 1 anyway. No one knows anything. If we were honest the week 1 power rankings would just be “top tier”, “middle tier”, and “bottom tier”. Arguing 1 versus 2 (or even 5) is pointless.

Keep smoking your green peckers in Phily you clown

  22. Cowboys are a little high on that list. The Browns would have beaten the Giants week one. And I wouldn’t consider him Dak 2.0. He looked a little off compared to last season. More like Dak .5

  23. The Steelers squeaked out a 3 point win against the BROWNS thanks to Big Dummy and the sweet, sweet, 14 points of offense he brings to the table. Yeah … the Steelers are the 8th best team in the NFL ….. LOLZ

  24. The Steelers squeaked out a 3 point win over the BROWNS thanks to Hall of Famer Big Ben and the 14 points of offense he brings to the table. Yeah … the Steelers are the 8th best team in the NFL.

  25. Of the 51 Super Bowl winning teams, 37 of them gave up 20 points or less on defense. Just 14 of them gave up 21 points or more. The defensive genius Bill Belichick has 4 of the 14 games.

  26. Okay, even as a Packer fan I have to say the Vikings should be rated higher than the Seahawks and pretty much everybody else that lost (including the Pats). I think pft is looking at where they are coming from last season more so than how they actually performed in week one. Just my opinion.

So GB is ranked #1 when they needed the officials to get a win and the Vikings are #14 when they dismantled the Saints? I shouldn’t be shocked, but hilarious nonetheless.

If you want to get real, put KC at #1, they did however pulverize the Brady led Patriots. Give us a break Florio.

I watched both games and I have to think the KC defense did look better. I was shocked at how much better. I still think the Patriots will regroup and win the AFC but geez KC punched them right in the mouth.

After the Patriots I see a shakeup in things. It used to be the Steelers next behind them but KC looked like they might cross that gap. They were darned close last year. And up to now the knock on Oakland was they had no defense, but Sunday they looked like they had a defense. I see both KC and the Raiders climbing past Pittsburgh. Then the only question is if the Patriots have fixed things or not. (My guess is things will be fixed by next Sunday but only time will tell)

  33. Maybe we should not be so harsh on Brock Oswieler. This 2017 O-line is basically the same as 2016. They really suck. We just did not realize it last year. Not much will change if the Texans give in to greedy, selfish, Duane Brown. If he misses the Cincy game he will have already forfeited $1.5 million, more that most NFL linemen earn in a year.

  34. Nice victory for my Rams but 18 is too high for the moment. Indy looked like the worst team in football and it wasn’t even close.

  35. Smoke coming out of Vikings trolls’ ears over this one. Packers not likely to end the season at #1, but it’s fun to see for now. Sunday at Atlanta is a further test. Go! Pack! Go!

  36. Prediction. You heard it hear first folks. The Jets will upset Oakland if for no other reason than this franchise defies all logic. They’ll still lose 14 games though.

  37. “How many points would the Patriots have surrendered if Bill Belichick wasn’t a genius?”

I’d enjoy futher discussion on this topic…….

  38. It seems that each year the Pats win the SB, they start at #1. I’m fine w/ that, but then if a team whips them out of the gate, the same reasoning should put that team at #1.

  39. I enjoy the power rankings, not so much the actual standings, but rather, the comments section. Look for the philthy fans, they tend to be very active this time of year but fade away towards the end of October.

    ———————

As if we needed any more proof that random stats are meaningless.

  42. The way my Seahawks played, I would put them around 20-25. Refs were only a small part of it. I remember in 2010 when all receivers and 3 of 5 offensive linemen were injured, and poor Matt Hasselbeck was literally running for his life every snap. Compared to Sunday that 2010 team was easier to watch because they at least had the excuse of everyone being injured. If Bevell stays, it is only gonna get worse. I watched the offense give up the game before half time in the last 2 real games played. Atlanta playoff they ran out the clock with 1:30 left and 3 timeouts. Last Sunday they tried to run out the clock and lucked into a field goal after failing at that. Even the Browns showed more grit.

  43. Love seeing all the Viking fans heads exploding. You guys don’t even post about your team, just the Packers ranking. So sad. We barely beat the Seahawks….lol. We controlled the game from start to finish and sat on the ball at the end when we could’ve easily scored.

  44. It’s the first week and PFT is predictably yanking the chains of all fans. What else is new??
Oh, a note to Vikings fans: The Packers should be rated 32nd and the Vikings #1. The officiating crews all are throwing the games in favor of the Packers! There now does that smooth out your fragile egos and incredible obsession and envy of the Pack?
It’s one game!!!! Let the season play itself out.

You quoted Miley Cyrus on a football site?

  46. THe Raiders ahead of the Chiefs? WTH, the Raiders haven’t beat the Chiefs the last 3 years so when they do they can go ahead of the Chiefs until then they are still 2nd.

  47. Good ol Power rankings, guaranteed that NO ONE will like where their team is ranked.

Not only do these not really matter much, but they aren’t even remotely relevant until week 3-4. Most teams need a week or two to knock the rust off, and another week or two to settle in to what they can actually do.

  48. Lets not talk about the Packers defense until Sunday Night..

If they hold up then, I might be a believer.
    ———-
Same could be said for the Vikes offense no?

  49. This list is insane. It’s like the hype rankings, not power rankings. You have the Dolphins ahead of the Panthers? They haven’t even played yet! And did you actually watch the Pats and Seahawks play? There’s no way either could be so high if you did. Patriots especially were trash.

Maybe an outline of your criteria would be helpful…

  50. As a Pack fan, I can’t say that they should be #1. They played a tough Seattle D but did have some help to win. As far as the D being fixed, one game does not make me a believer. I have to see it each week against teams that have a strong O-line. I am feeling good about the start – got to execute every week. Go Pack.

  51. New here, but this list is a joke. I am a Raiders fan and i have no idea how the Raiders got ranked above the Chiefs. They did the impossible. Beat the Pats at home. Convincingly. The Chiefs are Carrs Kryptonite so until the Raiders beat them then they should be ranked above us. Sorry Raider fans, but its the truth. BTY, ive seen numerous posts on here that says Carr has never beat the Chiefs and thats not true. That was his very first win ever. Hasnt beat them since though. Chief fans, you have a scary looking team after week 1. Obviously i hope the Raiders can finally get over the hump of beating you guys. But it will be tough.

LOL, the only possible way we can win huh? Gotta love these insightful comments. If you’re team did it you’d think it was the best thing since sliced bread.

  57. I think it’s important to point out that the Packers are ranked in the top 10 in both offense and defense, and the Vikings are ranked in the bottom half of the league on defense.

Yes, it’s week 1, but the Vikings played a horrible team, and the Packers did not.

    =====

I liked their gimmick defense alot better.

Constant pressure… 225 total yards.. held Wilson to a 69 QB rating.. and allowed 3.5 yards/carry to the RBs.

I’m not a betting man, but I believe they could win with that. Regardless of what the offense was doing.

They soundly beat the Super Bowl champs, on the road. What more do you want?

  61. Everything should always be taken with a grain of salt. Power rankings usually deserve a cup of salt. Week 1 power rankings should be taken with a truckload of salt. (Pats lose while Jags win?)

I was glad to see a win by the Vikings, as they looked solid. But, we will see how things play out in the coming weeks when teams make adjustments to each other. I know that a lot of people on hear want to rip on Vikings fans, as a few are delusional. But, most true Minnesota fans have gotten our hopes up over the years, only to have them dashed, in many sports (college and pro), so most of us are waiting for the other shoe to drop, even while hoping for the best.

  62. I’m ok with the Vikings rank on this list. They have to earn a higher ranking. Hopefully they can play that inspired on the road next week… I also don’t have a problem with the packers being #1. It’s unfortunate though that without Rodgers they are worse than the colts..

  63. Still sitting with no power in the ATL and Thank You for the great laugh. Packers #1?! You guys trying to push teams to be better than they are is a joke. Seattle is number #6?! Still kissing Patriots behind after they got their butts whipped by KC ? Dallas beats a horrible Giants team and gets ranked #4. ! Really needed this laugh. Falcons Fans are used to being ranked low. You think Falcons should have ran over the Bears . What I see is you guys are not giving the Bears enough credit on their improvement. Going to be an interesting season. #RiseUp

We’ll see how fixed the Packers defense is at Atlanta next week. If they hold them to 9 points, then we can talk.

  69. As a Vikings fan, I’m glad we have Cook now and not AP- better fit for the offense. But waiting a decade before deciding too many eggs in AP’s basket? It was only a few years ago he was MVP… and just averaged the 3rd most rushing yards/game in NFL history during those 10 years.

Shaq Griffin held up pretty d@mn well. Coverage was there. Most of the time he was beat, it was on the timing throws that are usually compelted regardless of coverage.

  76. As a Redskin fan I’m not going to question our ranking but rather the notion that Scot would be any better than what we have now. The past couple years made him seem a bit overrated to me.
