Donald Trump continues to take shots at NFL over flag

AP

If the NFL was hoping Donald Trump would move on to another issue, they were mistaken.

The President continued his war on the NFL via Twitter this morning, holding up NASCAR (where owners threatened to fire drivers or crew members who protested during the anthem) as the model for sporting displays of patriotism.

Trump and the NFL are at war with each other over the symbolism each holds dear, with the league’s “unity” commercial its own pledge that it is the most American thing possible, the sport alone which can bring everyone together.

While many players locked arms during yesterday’s versions of the anthem, the idea that players are unified seems as misguided as the notion that this storm is passing any time soon.

  1. And the NFL continues to give him the attention he craves. How long until the media/teams/players realize they are giving Trump exactly what he wants?

  2. This is a guy who ducked the draft with bone spurs. Now he’s patriotic when it benefits him.

  3. Patriotism should not be mandatory. IF you think it should be then maybe the USA isn’t the country for you. This is a country founded on and maintained with disagreement. Which is what has made it great and beautiful, we allow opposition. I think President Trump would do well to remember that.

  4. The NFL has nothing to gain by getting political. They should have nipped this whole thing in the bud when Kaepernick started it last year.

Because they didn’t, it’s blown out of proportion so much that the President is talking about it. Leave the politics to the politicians. This is not good for the NFL. They won’t ever get their ratings to rebound by delving into the political realm.

  5. LOL at the upcoming misfortune for the players. CBA ends in a few years, ratings and revenue down…. enjoy being broke

  6. He has spent more time on this than. North Korea, Hurricane Irma and Harvey, Puerto Rico, Charlottesville, racism, US Virgin Islands and some of his kids (Barret and Tiffany.

Time to figure out what your priorities are. You represent all people never forget that.

He is literally only worried about his fan base.

  7. Trump is right!! These players who want to be activists are disrespecting the very symbol that allows them to be activists!! What they are doing is divisive and inefffective! JJ Watt actually DID SOMETHING about an issue in response to a hurricane, these anthem kneelers are not doing ANYTHING other than ticking off their fans who pay their salaries! What are they even protesting anymore? I doubt they even know.

  8. NFL and its teams fell into the Trump Trap. They gave him the attention he craves by reacting. Ignore him and he’ll move on to a different attention grab!

As for our flag, I’d prefer everyone stands with their hands over their hearts while the anthem is played. Find a cause that supports your beliefs and go for it with all your heart. Rally voters to get Trump out of office if that’s your cause. Kneeling is lame!

As a veteran, I support your right to be you but I believe there are better ways to express your beliefs.

Finally, Patriots/Texans was a great game! We need more of those.

  9. What the media can’t seem to figure out is that Trump speaks for us. The way he says it might not be very politically correct but his message is spot on. It’s not Trump vs the NFL, it’s us telling you we will not except disrespect of our flag in any way, shape or form.

  10. The NFL was shut off at our home yesterday. It wasn’t hard at all, in fact, it felt good and I did some things around the house that had needed to be done for some time! Thanks NFL, you have given me back several hours a week I wasted watching spoiled millionaires playing for even more spoiled billionaires! Will also be looking at cutting other sports as well…more important things that can be done rather than sitting in front of the TV for hours watching people run around.

  11. I consider myself one of the biggest NFL football fans on the planet. I bought a satellite dish in 1989 and watched every play of Dolphins’ games until last year and that includes the very painful 1-15 season. Yesterday(and it continues today), there was more talk before and after the games about protesting than playing, I did the unthinkable and canceled my Sunday Ticket subscription. If I did it I wonder how many others did the same thing?

  12. The majority of the people agree with him, but the vocal minority tries to make you think it the other way around.

  13. Why is booing during the anthem acceptable and kneeling not? Doesn’t matter which side you’re on of the argument you can’t praise one and not the other

  14. The President is trolling the NFL! I think it’s funny. These players think they are making a difference by kneeling?? No actions to speak of. They all look like fools.

  15. The president doesn’t need to keep harping on the subject. A majority of the NFL fans agree with him, and showed their disdain yesterday by booing these players, and owners. For the last year we’ve been turning our TVs off, and not going to the games. This isn’t about president Trump, or the guy that was president before him it’s about the country, respect, and patriotism.

It’s not the first time the NFL has disrespected the fans. It goes all the way back to 9/11 and threatening players with fines over wearing patriotic shoes.

This latest show of anti-Americanism will end up being the final straw that turns people away.

This isn’t about president Trump, or the guy that was president before him it’s about the country, respect, and patriotism.

The NFL will continue to pay a high price, and that fan rebuke could very much accelerate far beyond anything the NFL ever imagined.

  17. I just want to watch and read about football. I wish the President would shut up about it, I wish the players would just stand for the anthem and if they don’t, I wish the networks and writers wouldn’t even mention it. Can’t we do anything in this country that isn’t political anymore?

  18. In all due respect to the president, focus on YOUR job, and mind those of others. Want to know a fun fact about Kap? H’es gone! Retired. Done from the NFL. Why throw gasoline on a fire that was already dying. Sad part too is I supported you too, I wanted you to run back in 2012 but all politics aside, this was pointless to do. Stop distracting us and actually do YOUR job now.

  19. Sounds like a guy that has a grudge against the NFL from the 80’s when they wouldn’t let him own a team, then started his own league that failed miserably.

  20. The NFL and its players don’t get it. When the players kneel but the fans are standing proud with their hands over their hearts something is wrong. There is a disconnect which doesn’t bode well for the NFL. I didn’t watch the NFL for the first time in a long time yesterday and I had a good day

  21. I wonder if the players taking a knee during the national anthem and the knee-jerk liberals supporting them remember the late Pat Tillman. This former all pro safety from the Cardinals left his lucrative and promising career behind to enlist in the army to serve his country. Tragically Pat died in combat as the result of friendly fire. Fans can be truly inspired by the life of this patriot and dismiss the antics of the clown squad disrespecting those who defend their freedom to be jerks.

  22. This latest show of anti-Americanism will end up being the final straw that turns people away.
    ——–
Anti-Americanism would be total censorship which is what trump is asking for. He wants everyone to follow his lead without question.

  23. You know what? I’m sick of Trump. I’m sick of politics. And I’m sick of politics thrown into football. Because of all that, I’m just good not watching the NFL. I’ll just stick with College football until the NFL is just about football again.

Claims that you don’t watch the NFL would be more credible if you didn’t avidly read NFL websites and post about it.

  25. Unfortunately I agree with Trump’s message but it doesn’t mean anything when it’s coming from him. He’s calling on others to respect the flag and country but he doesn’t show any himself. He spits on it every time he sends a foolish tweet.

  26. trump is an immature, vindictive megalomaniac. His stupidity destroyed the USFL. When he expressed an interest in obtaining an NFL franchise (even though he couldn’t afford one). he was given the cold shoulder. So now the pouty little boy sees this as his chance to get even with NFL owners by causing dissent and hurting their income. He’s a selfish and greedy person whose only interest in the presidency was to make himself and his family richer.

  27. Good to know that in times of crisis and worldwide unrest, our nation’s commander-in-chief has focused his efforts on the most critical issues our country faces…like whether our professional athletes are demonstrating acceptable levels of patriotism during pre-game rituals.

    Great work, Mr. President.

    —–

wait a minute, we thought they were boo’d loudly. That’s right….they boo’d during the National Anthem.

a better form of protest against the protesting players would have been to sing as loud as one can….let them know how YOU feel about the flag….but boos during the Anthem?

  29. So the president, who is a draft dodger and has openly mocked a veteran like John McCain, calls NFL players SOBs and calls on them to be fired and people are shocked at the number of players engaging in a peaceful silent protest?

  30. “People that are not happy with this country do not have to live here”
    _____________

Which side do you advocate leaving? The ones kneeling or the ones up in arms about the kneeling?

  31. When you’re watching from home… do you stand up when the anthem is sang? or do you sit in your Lazyboy – and yell at the TV because some of the players are kneeling?

  32. The guy who mocked a Gold Star mother and father, a guy who said he prefers pilots who weren’t shot down, as opposed to Sen. McCain, is here to lecture us on patriotism?

To this snake-oil salesman, patriotism is little more than a political device to manipulate and divide citizens. What a disgrace.

  33. Trump needs to shut up and get back to work. The players need to find a different way to express themselves as the workplace is not the right place. When you are employed, you are a representative of your employer, especially when you are “on the clock” and on national tv. Not everyone has the same views and that is okay, it’s what makes the world go ’round. But doing nothing (as in kneeling during the National Anthem) doesn’t help. Why not organize a charity for your cause and show some real change. Half of the NFL players are protesting; that’s a lot of money and publicity in which to build a charity.

  34. It’s not about if you support the right to protest or activism. The heart of the issue is doing this at the same exact time we all stand to honor the flag. Again, there’s a place and time for everything. But Sports and NFL is not the place, and during the national anthem is definitely not the time.
Be an activist on your own time, not at your place of work. Honor the fallen. Honor America. Your actions make our country appear so weak to other nations.

  35. Trump is right. Like him or not. At the very least, as Americans, we should be able to stand together for 2 minutes and give honor to the symbol of our nation and those who sacrificed for it. If people think that disrespecting the flag is “sticking it to the man” they do not understand. Most of us care about our country and want to see it respected. I have lost all enthusiasm for the the NFL. The whole idea of “team unity” is a crock as well. The players will leave if someone offers them more money somewhere else anyway.

Many of the comments here are ridiculous. Trump is Trump. He is brash and opinionated, but in this case, very much in tune with what most Americans think.

Probably the first time in my life I won’t watch the super bowl. Just don’t care anymore.

  36. It’s nice to see strong leadership from the POTUS. Last week 6 athletes took a knee. This week more than 200 made a statement.

Politics should stay away from sport.
Draft dodgers should comment on what patriotism is.

  37. How did we go from a few players kneeling in week 2 to entire teams skipping the anthem in week 3? The answer? Trump got involved called them SOBs and said they should be fired if they don’t stand. And in typical fashion he keeps going. I believe this week the protesting was less about the movement and more about protesting a president who doesn’t get they have a right to do it.

In my opinion they have the right but have chosen the wrong time. If Trump took that kind of perspective he’d have been much better off.

  38. When Trump had the chance to serve during Vietnam Nam he got five draft deferrals instead. Then he mocked former POW John McCain who did serve for getting shot down and captured. I won’t be taking any advice from Donald Trump on how to show patriotism. Nor will I be following Kaepernicks views on police which are equally misguided.

  39. “Then in the fourth quarter, Odell Beckham Jr. raised his fist in the air to celebrate his second touchdown, appearing to echo the fist-in-the-air protest of gold medalist Tommie Smith and bronze medalist John Carlos during the anthem at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.”

Does anyone remember if Tommie Smith raised his leg in the air pretending to be a dog peeing when he won his 2nd gold medal in Mexico City?

    =====================================================================================
The actions only appear weak to fools. The United States is strong because we are free and that should be the lesson we teach to others. None of this makes the United States weaker. Most of us believe the really weak nations are the ones that deprive their people of rights. I really don’t care if a Democrat or Republican wins the presidency three years from now, but I do want this idiot gone. Give him a radio show where he can be a blowhard and do no damage by playing to his extreme base.

  41. when the kaepernick story first broke, 95% of commenters on PFT said exactly what Trump said. Now, most comments on PFT are the opposite. At least Trump sticks to his convictions!! Dont back down Mr President

  42. The NFL could have stopped this years ago by not taking advertising money from the Department of Defense for paid for patriotism to drum up military recruiting. Taxpayers PAY for stadium flyovers, what?

My take is the National Anthem has no place in for-profit professional sports, these are places of work, like everyone keeps reminding me. How come other places of work don’t do this? You don’t hear of other employers playing the national anthem before starting the work day? Profiting on Nationalism should never happen. When TV networks show the Anthem ceremony before games there are all sorts of ads shown, on the field, on the TV chryos, etc. I don’t want to sound like Darren Rovel, but all those ads get eyeballs which is part of the ad revenue of the team or the TV network.

  43. People are so quick to say, “if you don’t think America is the greatest country, then why don’t you leave?” Okay, so if the protests offend you, then turn of the TV. Don’t set your fantasy lineups anymore. Don’t go to games.

  44. I wish just once, the likes of Sherman , Bennett, and CK would use their own money to take a prime time commercial to air their political views instead of using the free time the NFL allows them before the games. Add in reporters, any owner, coach, player on any team. Right now they have free access, lets see what happens when they have to pay for it.

  45. Trump is going to get a lot of people killed with a war with North Korea. A draft dodger is going to send our brave men and women to die for something he was too afraid to face. Triump is a hypocrite and a fraud!

  46. I applaud the Steelers and Seahawks for keeping there teams in the locker room. I think all the NFL teams should follow, these players are paid to play football not use the spotlight for there person interest.

  47. Mike Tomlin ridiculing Alejandro Villanueva for Standing for the national Anthem should be a Big Story Too. I am proud of Villanueva and the other players who stood and honored the National Anthem.

Don’t let facts get in the way of of your bashing.

  52. So some people believe we should stand with our hand over our heart and pay reverence to the flag and the anthem not using it as a place to make protesting statements. But these same people booed the protesters during the national anthem to make their protesting statement. How ironic is that?

Wouldn’t agree with it, but I can’t stomach his false flag waving. He only cares about the cash. Denigrates McCain for being a POW. Is a draft dodger over non-existent heel spurs. Has all his manufacturing done by cheap foreign labor.

Doesn’t condemn a bunch of Nazis, who fight to preserve Confederate monuments. And last I checked, they were both on the opposite sides of the US in different wars. But, he wants to make an issue out of peaceful protests.

I don’t like the protests. Their employer can try to say they’re ‘on the clock’ and make it an issue. But the CBA only says they need to be visible. If Teams want to do more than that, they’re going to have a legal fight. And they may well get dragged there over black-balling Kaep as it is.
