49ers issue vague statement as some players kneel, some stand

The 49ers joined the ranks of teams that wanted to say . . . something about the national anthem controversy, although it’s not totally clear what they were trying to say.

Before today’s game against the Cardinals, the 49ers gathered during the anthem with some players kneeling while others stood behind the players who were kneeling. All of the coaches stood.

The 49ers also issued a vague statement, which looks designed to keep everyone happy but will probably make no one happy. That statement follows:

“At its purest level, football is a unifier of people from all walks of life, different socio-economic backgrounds, every corner of this country and around the world. As players, coaches, ownership and staff, we are privileged to work in an environment that is a tremendous example of how people can come together for a common goal. We not only put our differences aside, but we also use them to achieve that common goal by challenging each other to be better – both in our professional and personal lives.

“For more than a year, members of our team have protested the oppression and social injustices still present in our society. While some may not have taken a knee or raised a fist, we have all shared the desire to influence positive change. Today, our team chose to publicly display our unity in a new way and, in turn, urge others do the same. Our demonstration is simply a representation of how we hope our country can also come together by putting differences aside and solving its problems.

“As the majority of us have done throughout our careers, we use our platform as members of a NFL team, and our right to freedom of expression, to speak up for those whose voice is not heard. It is important that we continue to emphasize that despite our different backgrounds and beliefs, we still love each other and are truly a brotherhood. Our gesture today was an intentional effort to demonstrate that. Make no mistake, we love this great country and have tremendous respect for our military and veterans who have sacrificed so much for our right to express ourselves freely. We passionately want what is best for this country and all its citizens.

“On behalf of the San Francisco 49ers organization, we urge our fellow citizens to embrace your differences, find strength in them, and come together for the good of all.”

  1. Great day, gym, played with the dog in the sunny yard, nap & 3rd grade volleyball game. Didn’t miss a thing – I used to miss nice things in life for some reason I’m afraid to admit now. Won’t be doing that any more

  2. For all the tough talk from people supposedly boycotting the NFL, they still seem to be paying a whole lot of attention to it. Which is why this is all an overstated bluff in my opinion. I don’t see any owners firing, suspending, or even fining “those SOBs”. Or big sponsors pulling out. More failure from President Tweeter.

  3. Complete bs. It’s unfortunate that so many people don’t know what oppression means. MLK Jr. lead effectively against oppression. While there is racism in our country, there is no oppression.

  4. Yes because nothing says unity like acts of divisiveness. A black power fist = equality and fairness.

Oppression and social injustice… without any examples.

Seriously a bunch of people need to go back to kindergarten and learn the basic meaning of words and actions again.

  5. The very definition of word salad.

I wonder if they understand that in 1 sentence they implied at least some Americans are oppressors and in another they called for all Americans to come together. “Hey, you’re a bunch of Nazis, but I sure hope we can come together”

  6. The SJWs get to add the NFL to their trophy list. They ruined football for everyone.

I get my sundays back though.

Well, you can’t use a 49ers/Cards game as your example.

  8. I love it stupid Americans fighting over a stupid 10 yard egg ball sport, the whole world watching yall fight each other and loving it lol. please keep destroying your own self’s, also its funny how stupid American are they bought everything the retard says and are easily convincingly, most of them are the uneducated ones, but us we loving yall so keep on fighting between yourselves lol.

Yeah, let’s wait for the actual attendance stats and ratings. Of course, if actual statistics instead of someone’s supposed observations don’t fit a certain narrative, it’ll be called “fake news”.

  10. Were the booed like the Ravens? San Fran is probably the only place other than Seattle or maybe Oakland that they could get away with this trash and not get booed. Even Baltimore was booing their team

  11. Cowardly response, thats not what your gm was on his soapbox preaching about. It’s so funny when the party is over and the bill comes everyone is reluctant to pull out their cards. Keep up the spineless work owners, doing a terrific job alienating the majority of your fan base.
