ESPN continues to play both sides of the Goodell extension story

AP

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will get a contract extension. Unless he doesn’t. Unless he does. Unless he doesn’t.

And that pretty much summarizes the periodic ESPN Sunday Splash! reports regarding whether Goodell will or won’t or will or won’t (or will or won’t) be getting a new five-year deal.

The latest report? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is trying to hijack the process. The article from Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen regarding a Thursday conference call during which the possibility of blocking Goodell’s new contract was discussed overstates the purpose of the call, and the topics that were discussed. (More on that later in the day.) The story also contains a smattering of ominous quotes from unnamed owners and other unnamed sources that make things look pretty bad for Goodell, but that are hard to properly assess since there’s a chance that these quotes are coming from a very small but very vocal minority, which is not yet willing to be vocal enough to put their names to their words.

The closest any owner has come to calling out the league office happened on Saturday, when the second public apology from Texans owner Bob McNair regarding his “[w]e can’t let the inmates run the prison” remark explained that the “inmates” comment referred not to players but to the league office. The ESPN report attaches plenty of weight to that comment, making ESPN pretty much the only ones who actually believe that McNair truly wasn’t talking about the players when he used the term “inmates.”

Regardless of how it all plays out, ESPN has every outcome covered. When Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reported in August that a deal is close, Schefter trumpeted the tweet but then quickly added that the deal hasn’t progressed as quickly as some thought it would.

PFT (hacks) then reported that Jones had finagled an ad hoc seat on the Compensation Committee, and that he had been trying to get the six-member committee to drive a hard bargain with Goodell. ESPN later echoed that news (ignoring that it was an echo), and tried to suggest that Jones was speaking for all of the owners who weren’t on the Compensation Committee, even though he definitely was not.

Three days later, Schefter declared that the deal is “getting done,” and that Jones (not surprisingly) was “shot down.”

Just last week, Schefter pointed out that the anthem issue has delayed the execution of the deal, but that it “is still expected to be completed and has been papered.”

So now the news is that Jones is once again trying to derail the process. Again, the latest report overstates what happened on Thursday. (And, again, more on that later in the day.) The broader point here is that, no matter how this one plays out, ESPN will have been right all along, one way or the other.

  1. Maybe they’re covering “both” sides because they are trying to be fair and tell all sides of a complex and constantly chainging story? Or maybe there are internal factions inside the NFL ownership group with some owners supporting a new deal, some against it, with each side LEAKING info that is favorable to their stance?

  2. Goodell has shown himself to be the source of the “shield” tarnish – creating an unfair NFL to appease certain owners, banning coaches, players and taking away draft pics for no reason. Tagliabue and the Laws of Physics have proven this to be so.

The players know things will never be fair as long as Goodell is Commissioner – and meanwhile the owners ACTUALLY believe the NFL’s success has everything to do with them and nothing to do with the players.

By all appearances we’re heading for a Replacement Player situation leading up to the CBA so the Prison Wardens can show the players that fans don’t care which “inmates” are on the field

  3. ESPN is a SJW liberal communist-sympathizing rag. Hardly anybody is watching them anymore so who cares what they think. The irony is their SJW-angles are causing loss of viewership so they have to counter it by firing employees. I love it.

  4. If you add up all of the controversies, the talking out of both sides of their face, head-scratching and inconsistent disciplinary actions, pace of the game, officiating gaffes, poor relocation strategies, declines in attendance and viewership, etc., it’s no wonder there seems to be a major push for Goodell’s ouster.

  5. Who care ESPN killed their brand by trying to shove their liberal bias down everyone throats. I hope Jemele Hill and Michael Smith get fired first. Racism is a two way street.

  6. According to Shefter, there are 17 owners who are trying to block the contract extension. They need 7 more to do so. If this reporting is correct, let’s all pray that JJ & Co. can prevail!! It just might salvage what is left of the NFL, if they hire someone who is NOT a total wimp. Kind of makes one wonder….Is ole Rog so hell-bent on suspending Zeke with ZERO evidence to get back at JJ?? You know, not even listening to the lead investigator?

  7. And in other news, Bruce Maxwell, the only MLB player to kneel during the national anthem this year, has just been arrested for pointing a gun at a female food delivery person.

  8. You actually listen to anything ESPN says or any of their programs? I stopped years ago. They are a bunch of clowns. The topper for me was when Damien Woody bragged about faking an injury that kept him out quite away. He complained about being sensitive to light. What a scumbag move.

  9. Bleach Report has an article today saying 17 owners oppose Goodell’s extension and want him fired. Its linked right through the CNN homepage.

He has a point. What happens to snowflakes on your driveway when they are exposed to sunlight?

Everything you accuse them of is true. Yet here they are getting criticized for not doing it.

Reading these comments I have to ask — have you ever listened to or watched ESPN?

I’m pretty sure 100% of the readers have lol

  13. JJ is on to something here. The owners should finally be honest with themselves. There is no bigger source of tarnish on the shield (or on the public opinion of all of the owners) than Roger Goodell and his conniving cadre of spin doctors (including Jeff Pash). The league as a whole would benefit from having a professional that can grow the brand AND maintain a constructive relationship with the players and coaches. It should be an embarrassment that Roger Goodell has allowed this to become so publicly complicated.

  14. Love how jones is leading charge but last year was all for Brady suspension. Karma city

  15. So the story now is the media covering itself. Is that fake news? Did the Russians collude with the NFLPA to get this outcome. The twitterverse demands answers.
