Week 12 power rankings

Getty Images

1. Eagles (10-1; last week No. 1): They’re making it look too easy. At some point, it won’t be.

2. Patriots (9-2; No. 2): Favored by 17. Still cover. Just another day at the office.

3. Steelers (9-2; No. 3): Mike Tomlin should have stuck with coach speak when speaking about a possible postseason rematch with the Patriots.

4. Vikings (9-2; No. 4): They’re starting to feel like a potential Super Bowl team. Which means that the inevitable implosion is coming.

5. Rams (8-3; No. 6): Maybe they’ll fill the Coliseum for a playoff game. Or maybe not.

6. Saints (8-3; No. 5): Coming Sunday, the biggest game at the Superdome since the lights went out during the Super Bowl.

7. Panthers (8-3; No. 7): They may be the best team no one is paying much attention to.

8. Falcons (7-4; No. 9): The hangover is subsiding. A little.

9. Jaguars (7-4; No. 8): For the first time ever, a “Blake” faced a “Blaine” in a game that didn’t involve a shuttlecock.

10. Seahawks (7-4; No. 12): They may not make the playoffs, but they could make the playoffs interesting by beating the Eagles on Sunday night.

11. Titans (7-4; No. 14): The Steelers and the Patriots should not want to face them in January.

12. Ravens (6-5; No. 13): The Steelers and the Patriots should not want to face them in January.

13. Chargers (5-6; No. 15): The Steelers and the Patriots should not want to face them in January.

14. Bills (6-5; No. 18): The Steelers and the Patriots aren’t concerned about facing them in January.

15. Lions (6-5; No. 10): Their playoff hopes may hinge on winning a game in Baltimore for the first time in 40 years.

16. Chiefs (6-5; No. 11): There’s a fine line between loyalty and stubbornness.

17. Washington (5-6; No. 17): They’ll be dangerous if they can get in. But it won’t be easy to get in.

18. Raiders (5-6; No. 20): They may need to bring back Cliff Branch and Fred Biletnikoff for the next two games.

19. Bengals (5-6; No. 21): Never underestimate their will to get back to the playoffs and lose in the wild-card round.

20. Cowboys (5-6; No. 16): I was very thankful for the tryptophan.

21. Packers (5-6; No. 24): With both the Packers and the Bucs under .500 at the same time, the Bay of Pigs is back, baby.

22. Cardinals (5-6; No. 26): Beat the Rams on Sunday, and the Cardinals could be on to something.

23. Buccaneers (4-7; No. 19): Jameis Winston may have to settle for eating some string cheese on Sunday.

24. Texans (4-7; No. 22): The only question left to answer is whether Bill O’Brien will be back next year.

25. Jets (4-7; No. 23): It’s time to tank.

26. Dolphins (4-7; No. 25): Not many teams could overcome the various messes this franchise has endured.

27. Bears (3-8; No. 27): The Superfans switched to sushi? I thought they were baccala men.

28. Giants (2-9; No. 28): With a trip to Oakland looming, the Giants are 2-1 against the AFC West, 0-8 against the rest of the league.

29. Colts (3-8; No. 29): Whenever Chuck Pagano gets fired, he will have made it far longer than he ever should have.

30. Broncos (3-8; No. 30): Most fans would take a Super Bowl win in exchange for a free-fall two seasons later.

31. 49ers (1-10; No. 31): At what point should they be required to give back one of their Super Bowl trophies?

32. Browns (0-11; No. 32): This year’s game against the Chargers will probably go a little differently than last year’s.

  1. The Bears are imploding and no one is minding the store. The players want out from under John Fox and are expressing it on and off the field. If the McCaskeys don’t want the next HC to inherit the same toxic mess that Fox did three years ago, they have to pull the trapdoor on him sooner than later. They can’t afford to ride out these last 5 games with the status quo.

  2. Minnesota “They’re starting to feel like a potential Super Bowl team” I gues some people are late to the party in realizing that.

Patriots should be on top like they are in most good polls.

  3. Titans and Ravens are between average and below average teams. The only concern for the Patriots and Steelers during the playoffs are the Chargers and probably (just probably) the Chiefs. Otherwise we will have AFCCF either in Gillette or Heinz Field.

  4. Thankfully these rankings aren’t as stupid as ESPN’s. Vikings crush the Ram’s and they have Rams at 4 and Vikes at 5. What a joke of an organization and the people who submitted their power rankings should be fired immediately.

  5. 3. Steelers (9-2; No. 3): Mike Tomlin should have stuck with coach speak when speaking about a possible postseason rematch with the Patriots.

    —-
And I’m sure the likes of the Jaguars, Ravens and Chiefs are happy to hear Tomlin say there will probably be round 2 vs Patriots in January!

Personally…don’t be shocked if Steelers don’t make it that far. 🙂

I got some legitimately good chuckles out of this. Never a bad thing on a Monday morning.

    you realize its Tuesday?

  7. This Eagles team has a lot of similarities with the 2004 team. Seems destined to repeat that SB match up with the Pats. Just no video cameras allowed at practices this time.

  8. “The only concern for the Patriots and Steelers during the playoffs are the Chargers and probably (just probably) the Chiefs”

Loz Chargers maybe, but no, no one is worried about Andy Reid’s Chiefs.

  9. “[Vikings are] starting to feel like a potential Super Bowl team. Which means that the inevitable implosion is coming.”

    Hard to dispute this.

But hey, the Cubs did win the world series in 2016.

  10. It’s sad but true that Vikings fans have to expect a collapse. Although, at 9 wins and with two home games left against sub par teams, our playoff hopes are high.

  11. Do they give out a trophy for making it look easy for 10 wins in the regular season ,,,I don’t think they do because Tom Brady would have like 14 of them but he does have Lombardi’s for winning the Super Bowls

  12. No Implosion for the Vikings this year. Just keep doubting and hating. You will see. The Vikings are Back!!! Purple Crush and Little Tarkenton are Going “All the Way Baby!!!”.

  13. 6 of the top 8 teams are in the NFC… and Wilson, Rodgers, and the ‘boys aren’t even on that list. What an exciting and refreshing NFC playoff we have to look forward to.

AFC, get you [bleep] together, your product in unwatchable and your teams have no hope.

  14. My Lions are awful. I’ve checked out. It’s done. They’re done. To put out that stink of a mess on a national stage in the biggest game of the year as they did on Thanksgiving is an unforgivable sin. Not to mention all of the people down there who witnessed that atrocity live. They should be ashamed of themselves. All of them.

Hopefully Baltimore does us all a favor and drives a stake through their hearts, putting them out of their pathetic misery in the process. Awful.

  15. Only one team and their fans are happy come February — I’m just gonna enjoy this unexpected ride until then.

  16. Iggle fans refuse to commit to the only success in the NFL is a Lombardi’ Trophy you can feel they are preparing for the THUD

  17. 22. Cardinals (5-6; No. 26): Beat the Rams on Sunday, and the Cardinals could be on to something.

    BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    31. 49ers (1-10; No. 31): At what point should they be required to give back one of their Super Bowl trophies?

They left them behind in San Francisco, along with their heart and apparently their ability to win.

  18. Coach speak or non-coach speak really doesn’t matter when it comes to the playoffs and Small Ben in Big Games hangs his usual sweet, sweet, 9 points in the first 56 minutes against the Patriots before scoring a garbage time garbage touchdown against a soft prevent defense in the final seconds with the Steelers trailing by 30. Just watch and see.

  19. .
The Eagles have three road games in a row which should give us a better idea of just how good they are.

  20. Can you really see Wentz beating Belichick’s defense in the SB? I can’t so therefore the Patriots should be #1.

  21. Sunday December 17th, 2017 425PM

My Prediction is the Stands will be 3/4 empty by midway through the 3rd Quarter because the Coach Speak Karma gods are gonna get Tomlin. I hate this because due to some bizarre NFL scheduling the Patriots have only division tomato can games left. This Pitt game is the only thing left with a semblance of a compelling game.

    ____

Wentz will destroy the Pats defense. In New England, it always comes down to the GOAT’s performance. We’re not concerned about the Pats D, only Big D Brady.

  28. I can understand fellow Viking fans fear of a letdown, and also the fellow fans who see this as a different vikings team than in the past. The current team is probably the most balanced Viking team i’ve witnessed in my life (80’s to current).

I don’t remember the details of some out 80s playoff letdowns. My memory begins week 1, 1991. The vikings downed a punt inside the 5 at Soldier field and the announcers gushed about how athletic the Vikings were that year. Los the that game 10-6 and went 8-8 in Burns’ last year with the vikings. Enter 1992 – Dennis Green has them out scoring opponents like 140-6 in a perfect preseason (these things mean something to younger fans, or used to). They started out 5-1 that year, including an incredible 21-20 comeback win over the bears week 5 after being down 20-0 in the fourth quarter beginning with a Todd Scott pick 6. I genuinely believed that team could beat anyone. They won the division that year and hosted the Redskins (who would lead to some of the most miserable early memories those first couple years of the Green era). In that playoff game, we took the ball and scored on the first drive on a Terry Allen touchdown. Felt like we were well on our way to the SB, but then the larger, more physical team wore out our speed based team and rolled 24-7. I felt like I was watching this playoff game all over again except on the good end during the Vikings recent 24-7 win over the Rams.

Until 98, they had a lot of one and done playoff appearances, yet in my youth I always thought we had a shot. Then came 1998. Randy Moss was the most dominant player at any position I had ever witnessed and I was sure the Vikings would go on to win the SB, finally. It was a week after Gary Anderson’s missed kick and I still was confused about what happened. Fast forward to 2000 going into the Giants NFCCG. There was no way we could lose. But then, just a few minutes into the game, it was clear we weren’t going to win again en route to the 41-0 blowout loss.

Having tempered expectations a bit, especially after losing to Arizona the last week of 2002 on a hail mary type pass to shockingly miss the playoffs all together. In the late 2000’s we became one of those teams that was just a QB away from having all the pieces – and that QB came in the form of Favre. While my expectations were relatively low, as the season gained steam I was again became convinced that it was the Vikings year. Well, imagine my dismay when they lost the NFCCG by 3.

Since that year, they hadn’t threatened my emotions this deep into the season.. until this year. So yeah, I’m not going to shout down a fellow fan for bracing for the inevitable letdown. But I will say, this year feels different. Vikings have star power, but aren’t really reliant on any single players performance and seem to be able to shut down teams in a variety of ways. It helps that we’ve actually played quite a few good teams this season, and the two losses are relatively easy to explain (week 2, everyone thought Bradford was fine until ten minutes before the game when Keenum was plugged in with no special game plan, and week 4, the loss dalvin cook just took the wind out of the team.. but can’t lose cook twice and the team legitimately seems to get better every week – something hard to see looking at box scores maybe, but easy for anyone watching each game).

Not to discredit what the eagles are doing this year, but the Vikings have already beaten the Rams and Saints, and will be playing the Falcons and Panthers the next 2 weeks – basically every other playoff team besides the Eagles. They are playing well, but i can’t remember a season the vikings were this battle tested before getting to the part that matters. It’s one thing to kick the snot out of the hugely overrated cowboys or bears, and another to get quality wins over two playoff contenders in a row.

What Patriots fans know about Wentz could probably fit in a shot glass. It’s also highly unlikely that the Patriots staff has spent a lot of time worrying about the Eagles because they have their own conference situation to contend with.

Unfortunately, I cannot allow myself to believe the Vikings will do it until they do it. Until then, I will wait to see how find a way to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory this year.

  41. Mason Crosby –

50.8% from 50 yards and beyond in his career #terrible
Longest FG in Heinz Field history – 53 yards

    ———————–

Pffft… are you kidding? The Steelers and/or Patriots will roll these stiffs, especially the Ravens.

  46. Depending on what happens in Pittsburgh on December 17th, it looks like the Patriots may be steamrolling to another Super Bowl appearance in February, 2018. I see that the Eagles fans are already mentioning Spygate and other irrelevant stuff but that 2004 game was a fantastic game and should be remembered for the way Terrell Owens played for the Eagles. Philadelphia came within an eyelash of knocking off the Pats that year and Owens can take a bow for the way he performed. I’m sure he’s have no problem with that.

So, let’s make a deal. The Eagles and the Patriots may be headed on a collision course to a meeting in Minneapolis in February. Can we all cut the nonsense and just talk about football and how TB12, now 40, will face a kid named Wentz who is simply out there week after week killing it for the Eagles?

I have written on this page before that the fact that the NFL offices are located in the heart of Manhattan and staffed by Giants and Jets fans, both of whom hate anything Boston or New England, and have been the driving force behind these contrived offenses like Spygate and Deflategate. It’s football everybody and I think NFL fans, except maybe the people in Dallas and New York, can see a really special post season in the offing this year. Enjoy, relax, give credit where due and let’s get over the crap that has been alleged in the past. Both transgressions were not provable and most likely were not a violation of any rules or practices at the time.

I agree with you. The next two weeks will be a good measuring stick. If they win both games on the road, they will have beaten almost every other likely playoff team (minus not playing the eagles). If they lose even one of them, I fully expect people to start placing them outside the top 10 in their power rankings.

  48. Steelers could draft seven defensive backs and bring in five DB free agents every year, and their secondary would still be a dumpster fire by December. It drives me crazy.

  49. There isn’t a single AFC team that is bound for the playoffs that is worried about the Titans or Ravens. Flacco can’t throw a route deeper than 7 yards and their defense isn’t nearly as good as advertised. As for the Titans, Mariota isn’t the player everyone expected him to be with ho hum performances and that secondary will get lit up by any team they face.

The AFC fans don’t like it but it’s true…the NFC has a better product on the field, in general. And Pats fans already counting on that next ring better slow their roll. If Pats played Eagles (who I absolutely hate) on a neutral field, my money (as well as Vegas) would probably have the Eagles favored by 3.

  50. Also, I’m probably the only person to know this since it was only on the PFT PM podcast, but Florio predicted Vikings will finish #1 seed in NFC (as one of his predictions)!!

  51. Top 3 teams have stayed the same since Week 7. So instead of football insight, a bit of geographical trivia: Philadelphia is slightly closer to Boston (city limits to city limits) than it is to Pittsburgh.

Ravens (12) and Bengals (19) are at their highest PFT rank of the year and Vikings (4) have a second week at their highest. Chiefs (16) and Dolphins (26) are at their lowest and Broncos (30) repeat their lowest.

Giants (24) had their highest ranking of the season in week 1, dropping from a preseason rank of 9. Mike was one of the first to hit the sell button on NYG.

Texans were 28 after week 1. Mike was right about Tom Savage. After week 4, they were 10. Mike was right about Deshaun Watson. This week, they are at 24; he still has a bead on Savage.

49ers best rank (3 separate weeks at 30) is their high point. Their low was 32. Not even the Browns have spent the entire season at 30 or worse (27 after a close week 1 game vs. Steelers). So the Niners have consistency going for them.

EVERYBODY whiffed on the Rams, who are up to 5. Saints, Vikes, and Rams have all steadily moved up the chart.

The “good and bad” Jags are still inconsistent, but have settled in near the end of the top 10.

Pats (preseason 1, current 2), Steelers (4,3), Lions (15,15), Titans (10,11), Cards (22,22), and Browns (31,32) are all vying for the Dennis Green “They are who we said they are!” trophy given to the team that finishes closest to its preseason ranking.

As always, thumbs up if you want to read more of this, and thumbs down if you want me to shrivel up and die.

  52. 14. Bills (6-5; No. 18): The Steelers and the Patriots aren’t concerned about facing them in January.
    ________________________________________________________________________
The Steelers & Patriots should be concerned about facing them in January, because If they do make it that far the energy that will be pulsing through the Bills will be enough to power the state of NY. Don’t sleep on Buffalo!

The funny thing is Florio is a Vikings fan, and grew up as one (from what I have gathered from his conversations with Paul Allen on the Radio). You got that backwards. The Titans and The Ravens don’t want Pittsburgh to pull up. The Steelers have already rolled both of these clowns. The Ravens in Baltimore no less.

Wentz will destroy the Pats defense. In New England, it always comes down to the GOAT’s performance. We’re not concerned about the Pats D, only Big D Brady.

The Pats D is giving up under 12 points per game for the last 8 weeks….and Wentz has never faced a BB coached D. It would make for a long day for the kid.

  57. 26predator, I think you are confusing The Lions with the Bears, dude! The Lions were in the game right up to the end against the Vikings – and we beat the Vikings once this year as well. Our remaining schedule is quite favorable, and if Stafford remains healthy, we WILL be a playoff team given one of the NFC South teams will falter.

  58. 6 of the top 8 teams are in the NFC… and Wilson, Rodgers, and the ‘boys aren’t even on that list. What an exciting and refreshing NFC playoff we have to look forward to.

Yes, quite a change. Usually 6 of the top 8 teams are in the AFC.

The Steelers & Patriots should be concerned about facing them in January, because If they do make it that far the energy that will be pulsing through the Bills will be enough to power the state of NY. Don’t sleep on Buffalo!
    —————————-
Just stop already, don’t sleep on Buffalo? The Pats will hang 40 on them this weekend and it will be so bad that everyone in Buffalo will be asleep by halftime.

  61. I struggle to understand what brand of pseudo logic is used to rank these. But if you look past a one or two position disagreement, the good teams are on top and the bad ones are on the bottom. So far so good. My question is, if you overlook a one or two position disagreement, couldn’t almost any fan with the team records in front of them write this? I was hoping for some thought provoking stuff or some technical analysis I hadn’t thought of.

This Eagles team has a lot of similarities with the 2004 team. Seems destined to repeat that SB match up with the Pats. Just no video cameras allowed at practices this time.

Did they win 9 games against teams with losing records and lose to a 6-5 team that year?

  63. Eagles, like the Cowboys of last year, are a paper tiger created by a media that loves a new darling. And like those Cowboys, they will roll over and die once they get to the playoffs, where there are no 4-12 teams to feast on.

The AFC is so boring. There’s the Patriots, and the next best team is a team that can’t ever seem to beat the Patriots. So as usual, the Patriots will coast to #1 seed, play two very easy games, and show up to the Super Bowl fresh and ready to meet an NFC team that had to run a blood gauntlet to get there. And Patriots fans will brag about this. What a world.

Struggle with basic math much? The Pats are giving up nearly 16 points per game over the past 8 games. Granted they are greatly improved, but it isn’t that hard when you’re facing such powerhouse offenses as Miami, Oak, Denver, Jets & TB. The arrogance of this fan base is obnoxious.

    ________

They’ve given up 92 points over the last 8 weeks, but one of those weeks was a bye. You don’t get credit for giving up 0 points on your bye.

Still, 13.1 points per game over the last 7 games is still pretty good. Especially after giving up 32 ppg in the first four.

  67. LOL, elmer trying so hard to troll Eagles fans. 3 comments in 20 minutes. Congrats, someone finally replied to you. lol

LOL @ the Bengalsguy hopping on the AFC bandwagon (even their rival Steelers) in saying that an AFC team will win the SB. Have Bengals fans really fallen this far? They are willing to even accept a victory of a rival team winning the SB just so they can feel some success? LMAO

We get it Vikings fan…. The Vikings are “battle tested” and played other good teams and won, and the Eagles haven’t played anyone. You do realize SoS is pretty meaningless right? The Rams inferior SoS didn’t seem to matter against the Saints superior SoS. The Saints have a stronger SoS than the Vikings too and that sure as hell didn’t mean a thing. I am also sure the Redskins are super happy to have the hardest SoS so far right now. They might not make the playoffs but at least they can pump their chest that they beat some quality teams.

Speaking of all the Eagles schedule talk….. Are the haters so stupid that they don’t even realize the Eagles did in fact beat a team over .500? They beat the Panthers. Granted, it was their only win against a team over .500 but you still look stupid for acting like they haven’t beaten a team over .500. And while all of you want to talk about how they played a weak schedule…… They also have the most points in the NFL, given up the 3rd least and the biggest point differential with a 160 with the Rams being 2nd, 37 points lower at 123, the Pats 3rd, 55 points less at 105, the Jags 4th, 59 points lower at 101 and the Saints 5th 60 points lower at 100. They are dominating their weak schedule, so spare me the weak schedule bit. The Saints have one of the harder schedules in the league (harder than the Vikings) and they have a 100 point differential (higher than the Vikings in 6th at 72). and that didn’t matter when they lost to the Rams or the Vikings. SoS means nothing, just like a lot of these team stats. Teams match up differently to one another and anything can happen on any given day. Stop crying and being worried about talking your team up or talking others down. Just be happy you will make the playoffs and let the games then decide the fate. You talking ain’t helping your teams win. You just look bitter because “wah, my team in first on some sites power rankings”.

  68. The Eagles are a good team and I hate when people play the “who have they beaten?” card…but does anyone realize the Eagles have beaten one team with a winning record all season? I have heard that line used against the Rams and Vikings, but never the Eagles.

  69. Wow…ive never seen so many crying Vikings fans. Their team has a little success and they are suddenly entitled. News flash Vikings fans, you barely got by the Lions. if it weren’t for their disastrous 1st qtr, they owned you from the 2nd qtr on. Your D wasnt all that impressive. Just wait for a real team to curb stomp you.

    ***

I’m gonna need you to explain yourself a little bit more, because what you said is absolute nonsensical.

Do you know anything about probabilities? Unless the Vikings cease to exist as a franchise, it is a statistical impossibility for there to be a zero chance. Math with logic does not lie.

Based on your post, and the weird caps/no caps, you’re probably just another drunken sconnie.

Last 7 weeks, not 8, the Pats D has given up only 12 points per game. You mention the Pats playing a weak Denver offense, among others, but didn’t that weak offense score 42 against the Cowboys D? Is a Cowboy fan really calling the fanbase of another team obnoxious? At least our team gives some fans a reason for maybe being obnoxious and arrogant. The Cowboys have 2 wildcard playoff wins in the last 20 years and won’t be able to add to that win total this year. So what’s the Cowboy fans excuse for being obnoxious and arrogant?

  72. We get it Vikings fan…. The Vikings are “battle tested” and played other good teams and won, and the Eagles haven’t played anyone. You do realize SoS is pretty meaningless right? The Vikings beat the Saints, Rams, and Redskins, so why would we care about their strength of schedule? Congrats to eagles on beating the panthers though.

  73. I don’t blame some of these salty fans clinging to statistics and meaningless numbers. I was the same way early in my fandom (and not sure how anyone could confuse my explanation for not being over confident about my team as declaring them super bowl winners).

One thing I am fairly confident of is we will hear the phrase “and that’s why they play the games” after an upcoming eagles game. I mentioned i was relieved the Vikings weren’t getting any respect – that’s because if they ultimately fail to win the NFC it won’t hurt so much. The eagles have the best young QB in football and will likely enjoy a lot of success in the coming years, but this year feels like they will have a great regular season but a letdown in the playoffs. It’s not a shot at the eagles or their fans, just a hunch.

  74. All the top teams in the NFC have been beaten by the Top AFC teams.. Steelers crushes the Vikings, Pats beat the Saints, Chiefs beat the Eagles.. Don’t let that NFC Mirage fool you..

  78. 10. Seahawks (7-4; No. 12): They may not make the playoffs, but they could make the playoffs interesting by beating the Eagles on Sunday night.

    ———-

The Seahawks are only one game behind the Rams and both teams have to play the Eagles. If the Eagles go down on Sunday night, the Seahawks are looking like possible division champions with the Seattle game in La already won and a Rams vs Seahawks IN Seattle game upcoming. Those three games will decide this division… Rams vs Eagles…. Seahawks vs Eagles… Seahawks vs Rams. It’s pretty awesome actually because there will be no disputing who is who when it is over.

Everybody sounds like they have the Seahawks completely out of the race but the fact is they could easily win the division still and with Russell Wilson running around creating magical potions and throwing them at everybody I can see it happening. “FIREBALL!… FIREBALL!”

Don’t ever count Russell Wilson out until 0:00. There could be zero offensive line out there and he would still make plays. Even with all the injuries Seahawks fans are having some fun still and it’s all about Russell.

Barely got by the Lions? Did you actually watch the game? The officiating in that game was an insult. The Vikings would have blow out the Lions if it were for terrible officiating.

    1. Two obvious pass interferences that prevent Stefon Diggs from catching big plays. No calls
    2. A series of bogus calls on the Vikings that gift wrapped the Lions a touchdown before the first half.
    3. A “taunting” penalty on Case Kneenum after getting sacked? That was the most invented penalty I have ever seen. He got sacked, and just rolled the ball away from him, and it happened to touch another player.

The officials heavily favored the Lions in this game. The Vikings had the game under control the whole time.
