Tom Brady’s trainer’s reduced role with team causing “some friction”

Getty Images

Last week, a report surfaced that Bill Belichick has an issue with Tom Brady‘s long-time trainer. Both Brady and Belichick have declined to discuss the coach’s decision to reduce Alex Guerrero’s special team privileges, other than Brady crediting his trainer with his success at age 40.

The Boston Globe detailed the situation and said Belichick’s decision to diminish Gurrero’s role and return the Patriots to a more traditional medical and training operation has “created some friction in Foxborough.”

Guerrero treated many of Brady’s teammates at his TB12 Center just outside the stadium in Patriot Place. But the Patriots also allowed Guerrero to have his own office near the locker room, where he treated players with his alternative methods.

Guerrero no longer is allowed to fly with the team, have sideline access during games or treat players other than Brady in his office at Gillette Stadium. The trainer still treats other players at the TB12 Center.

In 2015, the Globe reported the team’s medical and training staffs complained to Belichick about Guerrero and his alternative treatment practices and his questionable background. Federal regulators sanctioned Guerrero for falsely presenting himself as a medical doctor and deceptively promoting nutritional supplements, via government records cited by the Globe.

Brady counts Guerrero as a close friend, business partner and made him godfather to his son Ben. He repeatedly has credited Guerrero for his continued success, and when asked Monday about Belichick having an “issue” with his trainer, Brady said, “I don’t have any comment on that other to say Alex is a big part of what I do. I am fortunate to have him.”

  1. This is it: Belicheck likes to know everything that is wrong with his players so he likes plyers to use team doctors/trainers. Brady doesn’t want to reveal any injuries to anyone so he uses his own trainer. Belicheck is in the dark and doesn’t like it.

  2. so if Belichick and Brady have no commented at all how much credence should we be giving this story?

  3. Deep down inside Bill wants to kick Brady out. And so, he is leaking, drip drip drip. Bill wants to prove that it’s all him, and not Brady. That he can win without Brady. Brady wants to keep that check coming and of course the shine.

I think Bill didn’t want to let go of Jimmy G, but he knew that if he refused, Brady wouldn’t stop crying.

The last 2 performances by Brady have shown signs of decline. And it’s in the Pat’s interest to start looking for a replacement. Father time has never been defeated.

  4. Simple solution…if he is not paid by the team he should not have an office near the locker room. If Brady or anybody else wants to see him they would be free to do so off-site on their own time. If Brady gets his nose out of joint on this it would simply be an entitled attitude. I’m guessing the guy isn’t claiming all that free travel on his taxes so that whole situation could get messy if it is allowed to persist.

  5. This has been going on for the last couple of years this is a non story Belichick only likes people who are on immediate staff to be around the team. This seems like an excuse to cause drama like Tom Jackson saying the Pats players hate Belichick.

  6. Wonder if there’s even more friction seeing what Jimmy G is doing out in SF.

Not saying you replace Brady this season but at some point you have to. Look SF moved on from Montana and that saved them another 10 years of credibility. Same for GB with Favre to Rodgers.

  7. Should’ve kept Jimmy. There’s no way Brady lasts more than a few more years. Jimmy could’ve extended the Pats dynasty by another ten years

Whatever makes you feel better man. He played like crap in MIami which is nothin new, he is 7-9 there, which is amazing in itself, but clearly shows that Mo day night game wasn’t an aberration. And he led a 70+ yard, 4th quarter come from behind victory against the #1 team in the AFC?

And last I checked, Belichick is the GM too so HE made the trade with the 49ers and decided to move on Garoppolo.

Other than all that you’re spot on…..eye roll.

  11. The last 2 performances by Brady have shown signs of decline. And it’s in the Pat’s interest to start looking for a replacement. Father time has never been defeated.

Yeah he sure looked in “decline” on that last drive go 80 yards in 70 seconds.

And he was 22-35 for 298 yards. Not exactly horrible

He’s had worse games for n Miami 10 years ago. It happens

It’s about guerrero’s snake oil history which would be concerning to belichick I’d assume.

  14. Lmao

Classic boston media trying to sell thr same story over and over, all jealous of bb’s success, so they try to create a story that is not really a story.

    Hilarious

  15. Garoppolo playing lights out for a horrible SF team is not helping Belichick in the Belichick vs. Brady argument. Maybe the Pats won a game with Garoppolo last year because he is also really good? And when they played an actual backup QB like Brissett they went 1-1 including a home shut out by the Bills (really 1-2 since Brissett almost blew the Miami game)? And everyone who mentions Cassel forgets that he made the pro bowl with the Chiefs and led them to a division title before he became mediocre?

The players play the game. Belichick is probably the GOAT coach and integral to the Pats’ team success, but anyone who thinks Brady isn’t every bit as important if not more important doesn’t pay attention to facts

  16. Brady wasn’t horrible last week but let’s not pretend he was great. That last drive people keep mentioning…. First pass was right to the other team. Next couple to Gronk…one being at his feet. You’d be singing a different tune if the Steelers player held on to the ball and ended the game

  17. Barry Bonds had a personal trainer that hung around too. It starts out innocent enough.

In ten years Brady will be the next Lance Armstrong…..think about that CryBabyNation.

  18. The last 2 performances by Brady have shown signs of decline. And it’s in the Pat’s interest to start looking for a replacement. Father time has never been defeated

    ———————-

    Hahahahaha!

Do you think the old-line had anything to do with that?

As I have said before even a broken clock is right twice a day. One of these days you will too.

  19. The core issue appears to involve not Guerrero’s treatment of Brady at Gillette but of other players who in turn may at times be bypassing the team’s training staff’s recommendations creating a friction that Belichick won’t tolerate. Belichick’s solution was a simple and direct way to avoid unwanted conflict in the workplace, everyone but Brady that wants to see Guerrero needs to do it outside of Gillette. Additionally from the comments some of those players (Edelman, Gronk) have made they seem to be practicing only some of what Guerrero is preaching. Brady of course is all in and there’s a considerable difference. The message is clear. Belichick is open minded to various approaches to treatment but conflict is a distraction and distractions are intolerable. The message from the Red Sox owned Globe is clear too and it stinks of the insecurity and resentment Henry & Werner feel toward all things Patriot.

  20. Something tells me this whole thing eith this trainer is a scam. There nothing legal this guy can do that will be any better than the staff for the team. Sounds to me that he’s got Brady believing in certain supplements and using Brady to promote himself and really Brady TB12. So Brady probably in on it. Brady hasn’t lasted this long because of some silly TB12 method or any silky supplement. He’s lucky and got good genes.
Shame on Brady pushing nonsense. But it’s his right in our society. I just hope not too many people fall for it and give a bunch of money into it

  28. It should be mentioned that it was Willie Mcginest that introduced Brady and several other players to Guerrero. Willie has said several times that he credits Alex with adding several years to his career. He’s been around the Pat’s for quite a while- long before Brady was “Brady”

  41. If he was actually practicing medicine without a license, that is a felony in all states. If he was merely impersonating a doctor, he is subject to civil suits and fines. Thank God Tommy knows some good attorneys for his buddy.

This was several years ago, maybe he’s reformed. But that stunt with the “concussion” water tells different.

  43. The Boston Globe is extremely biased and anti-Belichick, not to mention the hatchet jobs they’re done on Brady ver the years.

No surprise that they are once again trying to make a big story out of nothing.

I can’t imagine Belichick is so controlling that he’s willing to piss off a 5 time Super Bowl winning, Hall of Fame first ballot lock, Greatest QB of All Time, over a trainer whose client is having the greatest season over 40 has ever had.

Brady will be in the HOF and rightfully so, but it won’t change the fact that you many more of your fellow fans are some of the most disgusting fans in the history of sports for your rude, crude and socially unacceptable behavior….wait I take that back you are doing what is socially accept in New England. The acceptance of cheating and bigotry is still ok at Gillette and Fenway right….chew on that Skippy.

  49. Belichick knows that Brady is on Brazilian HGH and can’t afford yet another exposed cheating scandal to unfold. Brady is the Alex Rodriguez of football

  50. Haha! Got to love the hypocrisy! If this was any other team with a 40 y/o player having success, most (not all) Pats fans would he claiming he’s using some sort of PED, no matter how many drug tests he passed. I don’t pretend to know why BB wants him further away from the team, but suffice it to say, something must have happened for him to suddenly want Guerrero at arms length.

  51. “Federal regulators sanctioned Guerrero for falsely presenting himself as a medical doctor and deceptively promoting nutritional supplements, via government records cited by the Globe….” Is there anyone around this franchise is Clean and Honest????

  52. mmack66, isn’t it amazing that you can recite all the things that people complain about and not realize that the common thread is bellichek. but of course all fans all over the world are just jealous of him. brady is done and don’t use the “game wiing drive” crap on me. if tommy boy was so good he wouldn’t have to have a game winning drive. his passes are fading week by week.

  53. Get out of your fog, Haters.
There is a 40 year old QB who is playing this year and producing results that is rivaled by only two or three other QBs in the NFL. Guess that is proving his snake oil is worker. Too bad for the Haters that there are no other 40 year old QBs are able to replicate Brady’s performances for their loser teams.

  54. There’s all that… and then everyone wants their own personal trainer on site and at the games. Just nip it in the bud; done

  55. I don’t hate the Patriots at all…I from New England – the Land of Overachievers. That being said, I think Belichick thinks that because he’s the owner, he can control every aspect of EVERY players life…and he just can’t. Perhaps the trainer is shady…and perhaps not. (and frankly, you cannot knock alternative medicine either…it works for some people, and we live in America, so its an option for everyone. While I think he can conceal some injuries this way, he can’t conceal BIG injuries. The NFL is supposed to test for HGH and other banned substances (legal and illegal)…but weirdly, nobody seems to be taking it – otherwise they wouldn’t be fit to play. Right?

I still think there is (still) some pretty shady stuff going on in the NFL….but I don’t think this is the story.

  56. It seems kind of shady that the Patriots are/were allowing a company Tom Brady owns to work out of the Patriots facility, as well as at the TB12 center that is also located on Patriots property.

Couldn’t that possibly be looked at as some type of cap circumvention? Guerrero (and Brady) obviously aren’t running their company as non-profit. Guerrero is surely being paid for his services…

A team can’t pay money (for services or anything else) to a company owned by a player, can they? Maybe I’m just misunderstanding something here.

  57. This team is in a free fall to perennial mediocrity and Bill is desperate to save it. One and done in playoffs and the end of the Bill & Brady show.

  58. John Henry’s Boston Globe just cannot get over that the Pats may be even more beloved in New England right now than Henry’s Red Sox. I do not understand the envy, it is not like the Red Sox (or Bruins or Celtics) are hurting for fans; and the players and Coaches of the professional teams all support the other teams.

    ———————————————————————-

Maybe. Time will tell. One thing I guarantee is that Pats fans are wishing Jimmy G. the best and hope to see him starting a Super Bowl or two for the 49ers in the years to come.

What is interesting, and not unexpected, is that when the pre-season rumor was that Belichick would only part with Jimmy G. for two 1st round picks people (so-called “experts” and us couch “experts” alike) were scoffing that he would be asking for so much. Then when Belichick decided that he wanted to get more than a 2019 maybe 3rd round compensation pick for Jimmy G, and traded him to the only team that was asking, the same so-called “experts” are wondering why Belichick did not demand more.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t in action.

  60. As a Pats fan, I love just about everything about Brady. His class, his commitment, his focus, his skill. That being said, he operates in a bubble of privilege and his position within the pantheon of celebrity is eerily similar to that of Tom Cruise. Cruise has surrounded himself with spiritual con artists that bow to their master’s whims….and Brady has embraced another form of spirituality propagated by the likes of his Chinese medicine man and his for-hire master motivator Tony Robbins. Who can argue with the results. But remember….the Beatles too produced their best works under the Maharishi….until the band imploded when enablers elevated John into a deity who transcended mortals. The real Tom Brady hides behind his humility. Brady strives to be worshipped.

  61. Guerrero is one of Tom’s closest friends, his business partner and recognized as an important element in keeping him still playing at a high level at an age where most other players are retired. It has been reported that most of the Patriots team seek his professional advice to aid their recovery. Bill Belichick is playing with fire when cutting out Guerrero.

  62. Wow… I love it… this story has more post than any others today..

The hate is great… the reason…..5 rings and counting…. bring it on haters….

  64. I remember back in the day when the hometown paper wasn’t owned by the owner of a different sports league, and actually rooted for all of the city’s teams to win.

  65. Just because Brady’s a great QB doesn’t make him a scientist. Bill is right to try keeping the quackery in his locker room to a minimum. Anecdotal evidence isn’t evidence; correlation isn’t causation; Brady playing well after 40 doesn’t make Guerrero medically competent.

  66. That’s the problem with you NE fans. You expect everyone to be blind, rabid homers like that insufferable TV and radio broadcast that you have.

And anyone who doesn’t sing unequivocal praises the entire game is a “hater.”

Meanwhile, down 95 where the Patriots’ fathers operate, the broadcast teams are down the middle, praising both the home team and its opponents when t he situation warrants, and criticizing both, as appropriate.

That’s why you all think everyone is a “hater” when they’re just speaking facts most of the time.

  67. Good move by Pats. Keeping this witch doctor around doesn’t speak well for Pats training staff and nutritionists. Just another clown who wants to fatten his wallet.

  68. Sounds like most of the “friction” was just among the training staff and less of an issue for any players or coaches. But, from a liability stand point, it makes sense for the team to distance themselves from this person they do not directly employ. Giving him too much free rein inside the facility, even if not actually employed, might have given them some sort of liability if someone were injured and/or had any PED issues that came thru him.

  69. They’re getting ready to dump Brady and they don’t want players thinking it’s okay to continue seeing this guy after Brady’s gone. 2018 will likely be his last season.

  70. First off… might I add: according to NFL bi-laws no team is allowed to sponsor or pay anything toward a player owned company. TB12 is owned by TB12. Second… if there has been shady medical treatments being done by a non-doctor shouldn’t it have been investigated? Shouldn’t any of this been investigated??? The NFL is blind to what goes on in New England but will come down hard on all the other teams?

Riiiiight, that’s why Belichick has traded away more QB’s than just about anyone in the NFL during Brady’s tenure (Bledsoe, Cassel, Mallet, Brisset, Garappolo).

Belichick is not precious with star players. If he thought someone else could do Brady’s job just as well at a cheaper price, he would have traded him for picks long ago.

  75. teflondyme says:

Brady is OLD and his arm strength is dwindling. You can see it in his long ball, it’s starting to flutter at the end and it doesn’t take long after that to become 2015 Manning. Difference being the Patriots can’t carry Brady like the Broncos did Manning.

Garoppolo was a free agent at the end of this season. They weren’t going to pay him $25 million while Brady starts. And Brissett most certainly wasn’t going to be the answer after Brady. Patriots future QB will come from one of the next two drafts.

Brady is #1 in the NFL this year in YPA and 2nd completions over 20yds…but his arm strength is dwindling? He’s throwing the ball deeper and more accurately than he ever has

Wow… I love it… this story has more post than any others today..

    ///////////////////

    Yeah for us!

  77. I wish more people subscribed to Guerrero’s system in this country. The way people eat is absolutely horrendous. Foods and beverages that get marketed heavily to us are absolute poison. Doctors who practice Western medicine are the quacks, focusing on treatment rather than prevention. I see fat doctors all the time, how am I supposed to take anything they say seriously? The FDA and AMA are both crooked. If you think any of these agencies and associations have your best health in mind, guess again. I was at the supermarket the other day and saw deep fried Twinkies in the frozen section. DEEP FRIED TWINKIES! You cannot see that for sale and tell me that the FDA cares about our well being. Go to another country and shop for food there. Bad enough American fast food and sodas have infiltrated them, but I feel safe saying they probably aren’t pushing deep fried Twinkies to their public. Absolutely insane that people put that stuff in their bodies. But I’m thinking the Patriots issue is strength related, the pliability vs conventional weight training theories. And it’s just generally asking for a problem to invite an outsider in who has conflicting philosophies with the strength and conditioning department. So whatever, non-story, but the nutrition Guerrero preaches is far from quackery.

  78. That’s the problem with you NE fans. You expect everyone to be blind, rabid homers like that insufferable TV and radio broadcast that you have.

And anyone who doesn’t sing unequivocal praises the entire game is a “hater.”
    =====

    DING!

  79. never before have fans other fanbases anywhere, any time, been as seethingly jealous and delirious, as what we have witnessed for over a decade.
    =====

Every rational fan respects Belichick, Brady, Kraft… anyone who has had a role in their success.

Its the fanbase that is despised. Absolutely intolerable on a scale never seen before, thanks to social media. You have yourselves to blame.

    You can’t be this dense.

Hitting wide open guys (and not nearly as accurately as he should, considering how wide open a good number of these throws are) on blown assignments is not contextual.

    Stop with the stats.

The rest of us see wounded quails and fluttering balls on anything that has to travel more than 15 yards in the air.

You’re sitting here talking about YPA as if 95% of that isn’t YAC on the part of the receivers. I haven’t seen a ball travel more than 15 to 20 yards with actual ZIP on it from Brady in two years.

This is exactly correct. The rest of the country feels the same way.

    ===========

Uh, you do realize the entirety of the NFL economic structure sits on sponsorships, right? And there’s absolutely nothing to suggest TB12 method is shady, some of it may be just wrong according to some nutritionists and medical people, but its not shady. And its all spelled out in any one willing to read the book on it. Their not hiding anything. Most of it seems like common sense with healthy eating habits and some of it seems like ill conceived B.S. (ie drinking lots of water prevents sunburns? oook).

    Nah.

Performance enhancers aren’t the way to go.

Evidence? or are you talking about kale? Its not like Gisele had PED supplements sent to their house or anything. You discredit your other arguments with unsubstantiated claims like this.

So Brady doesn’t have his leading receiver this year and Gronk misses a couple of games and yet that somehow makes his other receivers more open this year? That’s why his YPA and long completion stats are so high? He’s also 6th in completions of 40+ yds this year.

Sorry to use evidence to back up my claims.

  85. I think Guerrero was eyeing too many of the peroxide blondes that Belichick was dating. No honestly – I think this guy could help Brady to play til 50. LOL

  86. I don’t its smart to ruffle Lady Brady’s feathered boa…Belicheat should be passifying him for this one last run…

For we are witnessing the beginning of the end!

The same beginning of the end that the trolls have been predicting for over 10 years? (yawn)

  89. The writer, Holer, is a hack on a failing piece of crap newspaper that I once was proud to read decades ago. The paper is so desperate for funds that they have senior personnel sitting at tables at the entrances to in MetroWest Boston grocery stores begging for you to subscribe. It really sucks. It is like trying to get past panhandlers just to do your shopping. They actually give you a newspaper then ask you to subscribe. Pathetic.

It is no small wonder that they are now printing the writer’s drivel, attacking Tom Brady like the National Enquirer would.

Die Boston Globe, you piece of trash that would publish Holer’s attacks on Tom Brady.
