Week 16 power rankings

1. Patriots (12-3; last week No. 1): Nothing can stop the trio of Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and Al Riveron.

2. Eagles (13-2; No. 2): Has there even been a weaker No. 1 seed?

3. Steelers (12-3; No. 3): They finally found competition so inferior that it was impossible to play down to their level.

4. Vikings (12-3; No. 4): Is having their first shutout in 24 years something to brag about or something not to really mention all that loudly?

5. Saints (11-4; No. 7): This team is built to win on the road in January.

6. Panthers (11-4; No. 6): Cam Newton experienced a different kind of Nutcracker on Sunday.

7. Rams (11-4; No. 8): Sean McVay’s success reaffirms the reality that a good coach is worth a lot more money than a good player.

8. Jaguars (10-5; No. 5): They should do everything they can to beat the Titans on Sunday to ensure that they don’t have to face them again the following weekend.

9. Ravens (9-6; No. 10): They could beat the Steelers in January. Or the Patriots. Or both.

10. Falcons (9-6; No. 9): It’s arguably better to miss the playoffs than to blow a playoff game in the fourth quarter.

11. Chiefs (9-6; No. 12): If they get back to where they were early in the year, they could make things interesting in January.

12. Seahawks (9-6; No. 13): The rubber match against the Rams could be looming. And the Rams should be rooting against it.

13. Chargers (8-7; No. 14): On Sunday, the Chargers will be playing in the Black Hole without leaving home.

14. Cowboys (8-7; No. 11): Jason Garrett is safe. Until the moment he isn’t.

15. Lions (8-7; No. 15): Jim Caldwell isn’t safe.

16. Bills (8-7; No. 16): The Nathan Peterman escapade could be the thing that keeps the Bills from ending their playoff drought.

17.  Titans (8-7; No. 17):  8-8 would be the perfect record for a team that continues to be as middle-of-the-pack as any in sports.

18. Cardinals (7-8; No. 22): Quietly, they could end up at .500.

19. Washington (7-8; No. 23): Kirk Cousins had the best kind of audition for the Broncos.

20. Packers (7-8; No. 18): When the Packers score fewer points in a December home game than the outdoor temperature, that’s a problem.

21. Dolphins (6-9; No. 19): Will it be any different next year with Ryan Tannehill?

22. Bengals (6-9; No. 26): They finished their home schedule with a win. Was anyone there to watch it?

23. Raiders (6-9; No. 20): If Derek Carr is worth $25 million per year, what’s Aaron Rodgers worth?

24. 49ers (5-10; No. 25): 49ers fans are more excited about their five regular-season wins than they are about their five Super Bowl wins.

25. Jets (5-10; No. 21): They get a chance to screw up the Patriots’ quest for the No. 1 seed, again.

26. Broncos (5-10; No. 24): They’ve lost four games by 20 or more points. The Browns have lost only one by that margin.

27. Bears (5-10; No. 27): They may win enough games to get John Fox another year to lose a lot of games.

28. Buccaneers (4-11; No. 28): With a goofy pregame speech and a goofy late-game rant on his 2017 resume, Jameis Winston is working on the Goofy Moments Royal Flush.

29. Texans (4-11; No. 29): “At least we’re not the worst team in the division.”

30. Colts (3-12; No. 30): Andrew Luck may secretly be hoping for another year on IR.

31. Giants (2-13; No. 31): Ten years after scoring the biggest win in franchise history in Phoenix, the Giants suffered their franchise-record 13th loss there.

32. Browns (0-15; No. 32): The Browns going 0-16 and keeping their head coach would be the ultimate Browns move.

  1. 49ers DROPPED a spot after dominating the #3 seed and hanging 44 on their all-world D???

If these rankings are truly about how the teams are playing “right now”, San Francisco should be about 10th….

  2. Cardinals (18) and Ravens (9) reached their highest PFT rankings of the season.

Browns (32), Giants (32), and Texans (29) extended their stay at season low.

49ers (26) win 4th in a row, putting up 44 against the Jags top-rated scoring defense – and FALL in the rankings??? Mike, where’s the love?

  3. 1. Patriots (12-3; last week No. 1): Nothing can stop the trio of Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and Al Riveron.

Goodell and Article 46 stopped Brady for four weeks last year. You can bet the other owners will feel good about changing the rules as Polian did years ago when Ty Law shut down Manning and getting rid of the tuck rule. They’ll feel good about themselves for a year and always believe the Patriots win on technicalities.

  4. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years after having to read post after post of the Barney’s mind numbing drivel, Power Rankings don’t mean a thing.
You can throw them right in the garbage along with records, standings and head to head matchups.

A team’s overall record or place in the standings doesn’t mean a thing when you can simply assert that your team’s just better anyway.
Head to head matchups don’t matter either, not when you can just cite injuries, bad officiating, and when all else fails, there’s that secret NFL cabal that’s Hell bent on elevating one team over another.
Viking fans have been posting these weird musings and possibilities for their team’s failures for years.
Much to the chagrin of everybody else.

So why should any fan give their team credit today?
    I certainly won’t.
And when their season ends in another “One and Done” or any other variation of playoff exit, it will be another embarrassing, epic choke.
Just another example of the Barney’s jealous, bitter, misguided views. skoLOL!

  5. How does Cincy jump up 4 spots after beating a meh Lions team but SF drops a spot after beating Jax? GB w/o Aaron Rodgers should be somewhere in the 28-31 spot. He is the MVP of the league b/c that team is hot garbage without him.

  6. I couldn’t care less about the shutout – it’s just a stat. Something to brag about would be NFC champions and perhaps even NFL champions. (RE: Vikings)

  7. This years NFC Playoff series is going to be one for the AGES. Without Carson, it’s anybodies to take.
On the other hand AFC will be another Pats/Steelers rematch…. again.

  8. This is the weakest set of playoff teams I can ever remember. Every playoff team has some major issues right now. I guess that means it’s wide open. But let’s face it, this is a pretty watered down NFL right now.

  9. The Packers shut themselves out. They had the ball inside the red zone and decided to go for it on 4th down instead of kicking an easy FG when the score was 13-0 in the 3rd quarter. Who does that?

  10. The playoffs are a different situation altogether. The Eagles strength will be their defense. If they can get so.e help from the offense, they will be fine.

Minnesota has been playing a weak schedule to finish after getting crushed by Carolina. They might be soft in the playoffs because of that. It happens and rarely do top seeds. Win the super bowl. The top 2 seeds are no more likely to win it all than the rest of the seeds.

Funny thing, of the top 6 preseason favorites on the NFC, only 2 will make the playoffs and those 2 are likely going to be the 5th and 6th seeds.

“Crushed”? Really? Did you even watch the game? It literally came down to the last drive. Clown.

  12. Denver should be lower, if only because of the vast amusement of the entire O-line paying Osweiler no attention at all while he paced up and down the bench yelling at them. Clearly, they hate him, and who wouldn’t, given that he fumbled on one possession and threw an INT on the subsequent possession. Not their fault he got a giant contract and is not a franchise type QB.

There it is folks. One last desperate and sad post from a once proud fan base. When somebody asks you; “Can you pinpoint when Packers fans finally gave up?”; you may say; December 26, 2017 at 1:02 pm.

Say hi to the dinosaurs and dodo birds Packer fans. You are now extinct with them.

I have to agree that this is shaping up to be a sad and weak playoff field.
I’m predicting some of the lowest t.v. Ratings in decades.
    ————————————-
Another Cheesehead (along with shlort) throwing a tantrum because the Packers are left at home in January. If THEY aren’t in the playoffs, then the playoffs HAVE to be crappy. Spoiled, entitled, bitter, sour grapes, and then lets talk about the TRULY deranged who are STILL sending Anthony Barr hate and threatening mail. There’s never been another NFL fan base that needs to get a freakin life. Face it. No one cares about your team right now except them facing the consequences for IR Gate. Cheaters.

Hey, you struck gold again! Way to go!!!
It’s the joke that never gets old, week after week, season after season. (Eye Roll)
The beauty of it is, this gag basically writes itself, but thank goodness we have you here to post it for us!

Sour grapes? Perhaps you should reread your own post.
At no time during mine did I mention the Vikings or the Packers.
It’s simply the opinion I have over the playoff field as a whole.
Of course there are strong teams.
The Pats and Steelers come to mind, but it seems that you are the one taking it personally.
The beauty of it is, we will all see whether I’m right or wrong and just what the average football fan feels about this by checking the ratings come February.
And I’ll have no problem admitting I’m wrong if proven so.

And for what it’s worth, just a bit of advice, rather than worry about the Packers and their fans, you should try and enjoy the fact that your team is having a great season.
    They really are.
Divisional winners with a serious opportunity to have home field advantage throughout the postseason.
Despite 56 years of utter futility, they finally have a chance to do something truly historic and special.
You should, as a fan base, take a moment to really enjoy it, instead of continuing to be consumed by your jealous anger.

I have absolutely no animosity towards Anthony Barr or the team itself.
And I seriously hope the Vikings represent our division well.
It’s their angry, bitter and delusional fans that I despise.

Jealous anger? Angry, bitter, delusional fans? Look in the mirror, Bucko. Ur definitely projecting.

(And for the record, I don’t give a crap about your team. im just responding to ur infantile, tantrum ridden comments. Enough already)

    skoLOL!

  20. Eagles ( has there ever been a weaker #1 seed)…Last time I checked the ” weak” Philly team has already beaten the NFC’s #3 and #4 seed. The Saints strength is their running game. Philly is the best team in the NFL vs the run. I do think the Patriots and Steelers have the best chance to win a Superbowl this year but, I’m sure it will be Philly they have to beat for it.

  21. kind of odd that so many power rankings have NE 1 and Pitt 2 or 3 when the NFC has totally dominated the AFC this year. NFC was 41-23 against the AFC. Also – top 4 teams in SRS – point differential adjusted for opponent are all NFC teams (Rams, Phil, NO, Minn). Pitt is 7th in that ranking behind 5. NE, and 6. Jacksonville.

Seems people are ranking teams from previous years not what they’ve done this year.
