Malik Jackson isn’t buying that Tom Brady is injured

AP

Tom Brady has a hand injury that will affect him on Sunday. Unless it doesn’t.

The Jaguars will be better on the latter, and preparing to face Brady at 100 percent.

“I remember [Bill running back] LeSean McCoy said he had a high ankle sprain and came out there cutting and stuff,” Jaguars defensive lineman Malik Jackson said on Thursday’s PFT Live, in reference to McCoy’s status before the wild-card game between Buffalo and Jacksonville. So Jackson said he’ll assume that Brady will be the same old Brady.

Regardless of Brady’s status, Jackson believes that the Jaguars can slow the New England offense, if they follow the right formula.

“We have to go rush the quarterback,” Jackson said. “Also we have to make sure we press the pocket up the middle because he likes to step up in the middle or that’s where he feels comfortable standing behind that center. That’s what I told our [defensive] line. We have to make sure that we create pressure, have to rally and tackle and just frustrate him. He is 40, so we can hit him.”

He’s definitely 40. Whether he’s definitely injured is a different story.

Because it’s the Patriots, plenty of people are assuming that there’s something fishy about the situation. “Did he actually practice even if he was listed as not practicing?” some are wondering.

It’s hard to find a tangible benefit to the Patriots for embellishing or exaggerating or fabricating a Brady hand injury, other than to get the Jaguars to feel overconfident. A next-level cynic may suggest that Brady is simply trying to set up a built-in excuse, in the event that the recently-lowly Jaguars roll into Foxborough and make that 40-year-old quarterback look even older.

Fortunately, I don’t know any next-level cynics. Unless they’re all lying to me. Which is possible.

  1. Brady once played a full season with broken ribs and a broken finger on his throwing hand and didn’t use it as an excuse. Never has, never will. But Ben Roethelisberger starts limping just thinking about it.

  2. THis isn’t 2015 with a b squad in denver, malik. There is no steven jackson or a RT playing with turf toe. Pats are healthy and your lbs/safeties are not that good covering tes amd rbs.

  3. would not have said this a year or 2 or 3 ago about ANY team….but jacksonville will give the pats all the problems they can handle. not saying they will win, but new england is not going to roll up 40 points on them.

  4. We have to make sure that we create pressure, have to rally and tackle and just frustrate him. He is 40, so we can hit him.”

These guys never learn. He basically said Brady is old. He will pay!

    fixed it for ya

  6. I saw a report by a sports injury analyst that Tom likely dislocated the first joint in his thumb that like also tore the skin. It happened on a handoff. Also possible it was a tear and dislocation of the lower joint which is more problematic but the writer felt that the picture showing his glove hand indicated to him that it was the 1st joint and less likely to be problematic for gripping and passing

  7. Brady has never made an excuse for any loss in his entire career other than “congratulations the other team they outplayed us today, I have to practice and work hard so I can play a better game, its my fault I didn’t play well enough to win”

  8. malik jackson is a great player i know that. if Tom missed practice, then he must be hurt. Pats treat practice like a game and Tom practices hard. We are gonna have a tough test with Jax this week even if Tom was 100%. Jackson knows how to play us, since he was a huge reason why we didnt get past Denver in 2015. Should be a good matchup. Good luck Jax. Go PATRIOTS!!!!

  9. This is typical behavior for brady. He’ll be there. I hope the Jags can hit his 40-year-old body a few times then he will get very antsy.
    GO JAGS

  10. Meanwhile Brady is laughing at the Jaguars subpar defense for assuming they can even get to him. What the Jaguars should be worrying about is where they’re going to be watching our Patriots hoist a 6th Lombardi.

  11. Jimmy G was able to beat the Jags , remember Jimmy G?? Tom Brady ‘s backup? Jimmy learned from the GOAT, I’m sure the Pats have watched film of Jimmy G and his beat down of the Jags!

  12. This guy just can’t keep his mouth shut, lets just see if brady can shut that big trap for you on sunday

Is this the same team that managed to score 10 points against the Bills?

Is this the same team that gave up 500 yards and 42 points to the Steelers?

Is this the same team that was swept by the Titans…..the same Titans the Pats pummeled last week?

I’m failing to see the problems

  14. Not a lot of reasons for Brady to sit unless they want to rest an arm that threw 50 passes last week. I suspect he hit his hand on a helmet in practice. We have no idea what the impact of the injury will be.

  15. Belichick’s Patriots are always well prepared. But does it make any sense Mr. Jackson to publicly tell the press and that means everyone your defensive game plan ?

  16. He’s right. The Pats will pull out all stops to throw off the opponent, whether it be taping practices or finding “loopholes” in NFL rules. They are the best.

  17. Can’t wait to see than snivelling weasel Belichick making a bee line for the locker room when the Pats get flattened. All his dirty tricks and spying won’t overcome a defense that’s going to turn Brady into mush.

  18. Also to the Jaguars fans. Consider it a privilege for your team to even be on the same field with the greatest system team ever devised.

  19. I guess the Jaguars haven’t figured it out yet. All this trash talk is making Tommy mad. You won’t like Tommy when he’s mad.

  20. Would Brady and Belichick lie about something as import…
Sorry, couldn’t get trough it without laughing.

  21. Dislocated thumb is highly unlikely, based on the pics. It looks like a sprained UCL, which occurs when someone jams their thumb. Impact on him will depend on severity of the sprain, but no broken bones is good news at least.

  22. So this guy, who more than likely has never met Brady, is implying that the GOAT is a liar, three days before the AFCCG. Way to go, genius.

  23. As a rule cynics are hard bitten realists, I have never heard Tom Brady offer an excuse for a game in which he hasn’t played well. I have heard him say he has let his team down, ‘we need to play better’ or ‘that’s on me’ on various occasions. Never once have I heard him offer an excuse never mind sow the seeds of one in advance. I’ve also never heard the term ‘next-level cynics’ used as a euphemism for trolls before.

  24. “e’s right. The Pats will pull out all stops to throw off the opponent, whether it be taping practices or finding “loopholes” in NFL rules. They are the best.”

    #meltdown

  25. What quarterback wouldn’t be practicing just prior to the AFC Championship game just to engage in a silly chess match? This is ludicrous. He obviously has a bum hand. Belichick believes in preparation above all else.

    —–

The recipe to defeat the Pats has been the same for at least a decade. Hit Brady early and often then keep doing it the rest of the game.

No great mystery in that. The problem is that most teams do not have the horses to accomplish the task.

Do the Jags? Dunno, but we will find out Sunday.

  29. Why is everyone bashing this dude? He’s absolutely correct. The Pats are known to play mind games. You prepare for him like he’s 100%, nothing else. It wasn’t too long ago that Brady was in a “walking boot” before the AFC title game or Super Bowl, whatever it was. Looks like he played just fine that game. He didn’t say anything except to prepare like he’s 100%. It’s just a silly mind game and until Brady is ruled out, you prepare for him at 100%.

  30. So anytime the pats dont win the super bowl its a B Team? The pats had plenty of talent on that team to win it all two years ago. The broncos swept them. The patriots don’t make excuses so maybe you shouldn’t either.

  31. People are focusing on the Pat’s offense vs the Jag’s defense. Call it a draw. Where the Pat’s win will be their defense putting pressure on Mr Inconsistent and shutting down the run. 2+ picks, bet the under.

  32. have u heard that the “blueprint “ for beating the patriots (and 31other nfl teams) is to be able to pressure the qb with 4 and drop 7 into coverage.?!

have u heard that if brady is injured it just proves that belichick is an idiot gm for trading j.g.?!!

all these hot takes courtesy of rich cimini and countless other media geniuses who believe it or not get paid for being this lazy.

  33. I don’t get teams saying what they are going to do before a game, even if it’s obvious. So many players just talk and talk. Except N.E. players. Jags coach should tell them to button it up or get benched.

  34. Was Brady listed on the injury report for the broken ribs? All I remember is he was listed for a sore shoulder for 8 straight seasons.

The Pats had millions of excuses when they were busted for spygate and deflategate.

  35. Malik should worry more about – Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 18

  36. I’m not a doctor but if he had a possible dislocation wouldn’t have been an MRI not an XRay?

X-ray to me means possible broken finger and since they didn’t announce a broken finger I would say the x-rays came back negative.

  37. “We have to go rush the quarterback,” Jackson said…..

What a unique and insightful comment, maybe this guy will be a coach someday…
    Hahahahahahahahaha!

  38. Jimmy G literally had the Jags fighting each other on the sidelines. What will Brady do… hmm.

  39. Considering Tom just throws screens and 2yd crossers on 95% of plays, I’m sure he could play off-hand and still complete 70%. The real story is Jack & Smith shutting down the 1 step drop passing game.

  40. Whether the injury has been overblown, or even completely made up, there’s no way he misses a single snap. But more importantly, there’s no way any of this should affect the opposition’s gameplan.

  41. Not sure why the Jags with their 4th place schedule are supposedly so tough. Gabbert and McCown put up 20+ points on them. Mariotta 37 and Jimmy G with 44. Outside of the week 5 game against Ben the only QB’s held under 10 were mostly poor starters.

    Wk Team QB Points
    1 Texans Savage 7
    2 Titans Mariota 37
    3 Ravens Flacco 7
    4 Jets McCown 23
    5 Steelers Roethlisberger 9
    6 Rams Goff 27
    7 Colts Brissett 0

Spygate, they admitted taping according to the rules by not using the tapes during a game. That’s the rule, that’s what they did. It was Goodell who cheated by ignoring the rule.

Deflategate, or more properly Framegate, they had no excuses. They said it didn’t happen, Goodell’s lawyer admitted in court they had no evidence.

Please, detail the other 999,998 excuses.

    “We’re good” tbisgod?

No you are not. Your Colts have not been anything but mediocre to putrid since the 2014 season; you remember, the AFC Championship Game participation banner season. Maybe next season, if McDaniels takes the Colts job, the Colts will start to be competitive again with McDaniels getting the offense back on track with Brissett behind center, we will see. But as of right now your Colts are not good at all.

  44. 1.) Brady will play

2.) So what if he doesn’t? The Pats offense is a system. There’s no drop off in going to the backup. This isn’t debatable. History has proven this.

    —————————–
First they never taped practices and the writer for the story had to issue a retraction. Finding loopholes is not breaking a rule. Is it against the rules or not? You probably think taping practices was spygate. Go ahead, you can look it up now. It’s ok.

  46. Neither am I. It’s a BB trick that apparently Patriot nation thinks is ok, based on the last comment. “Finding loopholes” is unsportsmanlike in my book. If you’re that good, just play the game. What are you so afraid of, if you’re that good?

  47. Jackson and the rest of the Jags are entitled to their own opinions and can say whatever they want. They can’t really act like they’ve been there before because they haven’t.

Also I swear I’ve heard more about Brady’s jammed hand than actual pre-game analysis. Guy could have a hang nail and people will act like he tore his labrum.

  48. All these pro-Pats comments about ‘Pats dont make excuses……’. Brady’s hand being hurt (which is complete BS btw) is a pre-excuse before the game. Half the jagoffs who have said ‘Durr, Pats dont need excuses’ will be back on here Monday morning making excuses if the Jags overcome incredible odds and the Al Riveron to actually win the game. The Pats are a dynasty, no doubt. But, their fans are the worst.

  49. of all the injuries that can happen, and of all the players it can happen to, this one injury can affect the entire offensive approach of NE. An approach that relies on the QB handling and throwing the ball 70 times a game. Throws that must be perfect. Timed, on target, eluding very skilled athletic opponents.

Nah… this injury won’t affect the game.

  50. No real mystery about pushing the pocket up the middle. That’s how the Giants won 2 SBs. The frustrating part will be if the Pats can’t handle what is clearly coming their way.

  51. Regardless of Brady’s health: Jags by 3. They won’t overcome Jags defense and score enough. The Jags offense will use their running game to grind it out. Jags QB will be, again, “adequate” to get the job done.

No one here is ascared of anything but I do think you’re palms are a bit clammy.

“Loopholes” I can list multiple examples of each and every team using your so-called “loopholes” but it may take some time and I doubt PFT will allow a dozen pages worth of examples. Rule or not a rule. Legal or illegal. These are the only two states in which a rule can exist. There are no “loopholes”. That’s a word coined by those who came in 2nd in a game involving 2 teams.

So it’s a rule that you can’t use walkie talkies, where was the punishment? How many draft picks did NY lose? Testing balls on the sidelines? Remember when the Colts and Steelers lost picks for admittedly doing this? Nope, me neither. Let’s not even get started on the Rooney Rule.

  53. Jags, equals roadkill. Brady hurt his hand, will he play? Most likely. Malik is on the injury report and so is Bortles and Fournette. will they play? Most likely. Do you hear any of the Patriots talking about them playing mind games? Brady hurt is hand and is not practicing for a couple of days. I’m sure Brady has practiced enough in his lifetime, he is pretty much as veteran of the game as you can get. No problem. Just shut your mouth and play the game. The Jags will lose by at least two touchdowns this week. At least. And when the Patriots are pouring it on in the 4th quarter, don’t come on here crying about how the Pats have no class running up the score. You keep running your mouth off the field and the Pats will keep running up the score on the field. Don’t cry when they do.

  54. Brady’s “Injury” is just another ploy by Brady himself to build up the Superbowl story line. A 40 year old QB steps up his game with an injured throwing hand to win yet another SB… Oh Brady my hero! Hold on while I puke.

  55. Well considering the Patriots history of lying on thier injury reports (PFT reported) nobody who knows Patriots history should believe it.

  56. “Finding loopholes” is unsportsmanlike in my book. If you’re that good, just play the game. What are you so afraid of, if you’re that good?
    *****************
So, according to you – flea flickers, reverses, counter plays, or any play that has any kind of deception in it should be illegal as well, because you know, if you’re that good you should just play the game?

  57. We already know that they’re going to try to get to Brady because that bothers him.

There’s some breaking news – it’s only been true for about 60 years or so.

  58. I recall the Giants Pats superbowl where Brady injured his ankle and had to wear a boot in the week prior to the game.
in the game his mobility and passing were noticeably affected.

But, for some posting here, I’m sure that was all a ruse.

Oh, and they lost that one.
So, it didn’t work so well.
