Eagles long-snapper: Team ran fake walk-through in the event Pats were watching

Getty Images

Only four days after Rams Hall of Famer Orlando Pace resurrected suspicions about shenanigans at the final walk-through practice before Super Bowl XXXVI, a member of the new Super Bowl champions claims that the Eagles ran a phony walk-through practice before Super Bowl LII to counter any type of foul play.

Appearing on 620 WDAE in Tampa, long snapper Rick Lovato said that the Eagles specifically didn’t run plays like the “Philly Special” at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“We had run that play during a walk-through like two weeks ago,” Lovato said, adding that the Eagles purposefully did not run the play in Minnesota due to concerns that the Patriots may be watching.

“I believe our whole walk-through was just a complete fake walk-through,” Lovato said. “We did it at the stadium. There were certain people walking around. . . . I believe I overheard someone say a lot of the plays we were running weren’t even in the playbook for the Super Bowl.”

But why not take advantage of the opportunity to practice the actual plays in the stadium where the game was going to be played, one day beforehand?

“We already had our game plan set all week for the last two weeks,” Lovato said. “We had two weeks to prepare for that game. A measly walk-through the day before the game, we weren’t going to show anything to anyone, especially being at the stadium.”

There’s absolutely no evidence that the Patriots were watching the Eagles on Saturday or any other Super Bowl opponent prior to any other Super Bowl. Still, it apparently didn’t hurt the Eagles to conceal the plays they planned to run the next day, and to not run them one last time in a setting that was less-than-half-speed, at most.

  1. I think that’s the first time I ever heard a “Long Snapper” quoted regarding anything about “football”. Normally it’s only when he has another vocation, like he’s doing magic tricks or when they completely screw up a snap like Trey Junkin.

  2. Congrats to Philly for winning a great game. If you don’t believe that the Patriots have been this good for this long…then they own real estate between your ears.

  3. I’m a pats fan, and I like this. No whining, just forward thinking. Good on them ( the Eagles).

  4. Brilliant. What’s next, coaches covering their mouths on the sideline so nobody can decipher the play call?

  5. Well, when you have a well deserved reputation for skirting or downright ignoring the rules, an ounce of caution and prevention is a smart way to proceed.

  6. Matty P definitely didn’t tape their plays. His defense was historically bad and his calls prove how clueless he is.

  7. That’s likely what made the difference in the game. Seriously, I’ve never seen a franchise with a reputation for cheating as much as the one in New England.

  8. Once a cheater always a cheater. And now they got fooled and beaten by their own game. They should put asterisks on tjose first 3 Super Bowls the Pats supposedly won.

  9. There are some feeble minds out there that believe a 17 year run of greatness is all due to cheating.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Your team lost, you’ll get over it. It’s just a game, plus, for most of us, being a fan of a certain team is only a function of where we were born. It’s not like we have any vested interest in their success beyond bragging rights, nor do we have any impact on their success. Some people just need to have the affiliation with a winning team, thinking that it somehow makes them better than others, which makes no sense.

  13. Anyone who thinks the Pats win by cheating simply hasn’t watched them play. They win with discipline and adaptability. And they don’t always win. If they were actually cheating, the results would be different.

Unless you think that falling behind 28-3 in a Super Bowl is all part of some master plan?

  14. Pats fan here… Congratulations to The Eagles. They had an aggressive, creative game plan and made the plays on defense when they had to.Looking forward to next year.

  15. I heard they also had a Malcolm Butler clone getting burned at this fake walk through . Plan worked to perfection

  16. Winning superbowls was getting a little boring. I guess I’ll have to go watch the current best team in the NHL (Bruins), and the first place Celtics. How ’bout them Sixers and Flyers! Enjoy your one title… That’s all your gettin’.

  17. Here’s all the proof you need that inside the league they know the pats cheat. Goodell destroyed the evidence so the public would never see but the teams know. That’s part of why the deflategate penalty was high, because owners were mad that Goodell let them off so lightly for spygate.

All the Pats Super Bowls were close. A play here or there and they could easily be winless in the super bowl. In other words, the advantages of their spying really could be the difference.

  18. .
Let’s hope that the immortal Rick Lovato has a good 15 year career in Philly. If he’s ever cut he may find that Belichick has a lot of contacts in the league who may not think highly of a lackey long snapper publicly accusing the Patriots of cheating without even a shred of evidence.
    .

  19. Bottom line, NE lost at its own game. Eagles scored with a minute left. The patriots only know how to throw 7yard passes and didn’t have enough time. Tom is terrific but aside from the 20 yarder to Gronkowski where anybody would’ve been open (since the db’s Were 40 yards downfield time ran out.

And after Cooks got hit by Jenkins I don’t remember a WR running a route over the middle.

  20. And people think filming a practice doenst make a difference you realize had the eagles ran the philly special in practice and pats filmed it they would have known the ball was going to foles

  21. Patriots are in every team’s (and haters) heads. It’s been a great ride by the Pats, but nothing last forever, except those “who hate us, because they ain’t us).

Brady’s still the league’s reigning MVP and Pats have been to three of last four Super bowls. It ain’t easy, how often has you team been to the super bowl this century?

Congratulations to Philly. It was a hard fought game. No quarter asked and none given.

  22. All the Pats Super Bowls were close. A play here or there and they could easily be winless

    Or undefeated.

  23. When you win you can say anything you want and you’re a genius. When you lose accuse the other team of cheating and say the refs stuck it to you. That’s the new M.O. Good thing Brady didn’t drive for a TD at the end. Now everyone in Philly can be smart for a week in between looting and burning the town down.

  24. The bad taste from the 2005 SB when Eagles players felt the Pats knew their offensive calls beforehand caused this. Cheaters will cheat.

  25. Tom is terrific but aside from the 20 yarder to Gronkowski where anybody would’ve been open

Of course you noticed our deep threat receiver got hit in the head, much like Gronk did two weeks earlier. What a coincidence.

I don’t begrudge the Eagles their win, it was a great win. But that game wasn’t over until the clock hit zero, and people are acting as if it was an epic beat-down.

  26. Amazing, the Boston fans act like their so much better at being fans than anybody else….until you lose, them all the name calling and crying starts showing your true colors!! Pretty classless.

  27. It worked, usually the Pats are two steps ahead of everyone. You could tell they were not seeing the plays they were expecting. Well done Philadelphia.

  28. What you can say is the Eagles learned their lesson from the last Supebowl where the Patriots did spy on their practices. No sense taking any chances, it’s not like the Patriots all of sudden obtained some morality. They got caught cheating twice and that’s just the two times they got caught, they’ve cheating the whole time.

  29. Isn’t it funny how the teams who practice fake plays and fake play calls end up beating the Patriots?

  30. Oh but hey wait a minute! I thought “every team cheats but the Patriots just got caught,” right? Seems like Philly treated the Patriots like the exception rather than the rule.

And no, dear revisionists, Lovato did not “accuse the Patriots of cheating.” He said his own team ran a fake walk through. And history says that the Patriots did cheat.

    ——-
The Bruins aren’t even the best team in their division. I suggest you take a look at this thing they call the standings. Lol, it’s only been 3 years since they won a playoff series. Maybe this is the year!

  32. Delusional loser Patriots fans are so used to stooge refs rigging games for their favorite team like the Steelers game and the Jaguars game that when it doesn’t happen they think they’re victims.

Their tears are delicious, especially since they actually seem to tell themselves they’re on the team they cheer for lolllll. Must not have any actual achievements of their own.

Universally regarded as the saddest and lowest class fanbase in sports.

  33. Smart wasting practice time when ne probably wasn’t watching at all….and why would this guys say anything….now they lose this as an advantage if anyone is watching….eagles won because butler sat and they didn’t put Gilmore on Jeffrey until they had ten points on the board. Wow was Jeffrey shut down easily by Gilmore. ..probably a td or more loss if butler plays…had nothing to do with fake walk throughs….hilarious how he says I think i heard someone say these plays weren’t even in the playbook…this isn’t even first hand information….please someone on the yeam talk to this guy….hysterical.

  34. And with that fake walk thru…….the Pats gave up a historical amount of points and yards. Hmmmmm…..Belichick even benched his best cover corner. Wish the Seahawks had thought of this before 49.

  35. Just another simpleton trying to devalue the greatest team of all time. It’s always everything but the fact that they’re the best. Never any credit although that’s what they deserve for getting to the Super Bowl every other year for 18 years.

Too bad the excuse-makers aren’t adult enough to just tip their cap and do away with the tired nonsense that literally never existed anyway.

Turns out it’s all magic. What a brilliant deduction.

  36. Remember that time, 17 years ago that the Pats filmed another team’s practice?
No. You don’t. Because as it turns out, it never happened and everyone walked back those stories.

But hey, don’t let that stop the stupid conspiracy theories….

  37. Question : Why do the coaches always cover their mouths when communicating ???? Because teams have lip readers watching ,communications set up annnnnd they have the playbook lingo down for each and every team. This is no different.

  38. Pederson does not have the same control over his players that Belichick does. This is a family secret, and its efficacy is dubious at best. What is the benefit of disclosure at this juncture or at any time? Zero, What a moron the LS is.

  39. Great to see all the outright lies about the Pats spewed by BSPN over the past 15 years are literally driving other teams absolutely nuts.

  40. Pats fans can’t say spygate/taping walk throughs didn’t matter. When NFL teams are running fake practices it tells you all you need to know about how much it makes a difference.

  41. The game really just came down to Nick Foles making perfect pass after perfect pass after perfect pass. Whether or not the Patriots were trying to spy didn’t really matter. Even if the Patriots never even thought about cheating, Foles was the real difference. Doug Williams once played a near perfect super bowl game too. It happens. I don’t want to go off on some sidetrack. Let’s keep the attention on Nick Foles. He deserves it.

  42. It’s pretty sad that it makes someone’s day/month/year, when a team you hate loses. There are teams or players I dislike, but I don’t hate or care enough to make it my world when they lose or win. Some people need a better life

  43. Yeah, I’m sure the Pats never seen a long snapper hike the ball on a field goal before. Does this long snapper have a tell. i hope the Pats taped this long snappers every move. Shut up, you are on the field three times a game. Who’s gonna be talking trash next, the place holder.

  44. Arlen Specter wishes a couple things last time they faced NE in Super Bowl.
One – that Eagles staff would have taken precautions themselves.
And two- that Roger Goodell would have spent Deflategate like budget and 18 months investigating all the shenanigans that ended with Goodell burning evidence IN FOXBORO.
Instead Goodell poo pooed it after looking at it four a few weeks .
    Cue in Pats nation with:
“Spygate was just about having a camera in the wrong spot at stadium”
    “Ideal gas law…..blah blah blah”
Sell crazy to someone else. Asterisks for life Tee Hee 😊

  45. To all Patriots fans that believe comments like this, “If you don’t believe that the Patriots have been this good for this long…then they own real estate between your ears.”

Please please please explain to me how a team that wins 80% of its games for 17 years struggles to handily defeat its opponents in the AFC playoffs and especially the Super Bowl. Pats have only covered against Seattle in Super Bowl as a favorite in regulation and we know that was due to a luckback and Carroll screwup.

  46. I loathe the New England Cheaters, but I must say these Philthydelphia football team players are some of the most arrogant fools I’ve ever seen – they whine they are underdogs – they whine that someone might be watching – all the while they’ve played dirty ball all year. This team was where it was because their starting QB has an IQ of a radish and has no common sense and arrogantly dared to be hit each play. This team has no hint of what it takes to make a long term successful team – they are filled with hot air and foolishness that will come back to haunt them.

I can’t wait for these jerks to fall hard on their tears.

  47. Let’s hope that the immortal Rick Lovato has a good 15 year career in Philly. If he’s ever cut he may find that Belichick has a lot of contacts in the league who may not think highly of a lackey long snapper publicly accusing the Patriots of cheating without even a shred of evidence.

And Lovato could just up and decide to execute Belichick in his driveway as well. See we can all play the hypothetical game.

  48. The Pats just aren’t that good, so it must be filming signals, letting air out of footballs, paying refs, etc…for 17 years, seriously. If it’s that easy then why doesn’t another team try this. Or maybe they do but no one pays any attention if it’s not the Patriots. Want an example? Google Deflategate II ( Dec. 2016, Steelers vs Giants).

  49. Or undefeated? 46 to 10 loss to the Bears,35 to 21 loss to the packers.yeah they could really be undefeated. Those are really close games there.

  50. Excellent Troll Job … but it is Philly and they’re about to be on the wrong side of history as the organization that benched a Superbowl MVP!

  51. I’m tired of this stupid crap that only total losers spit out. I’m not even a Patriots fan, but I love winners who earn it like Brady. These jealous losers are pathetic.

There’s a reason there are zero asterisks in the official NFL records.

  57. Release Wentz, he’s a system QB anyway. Let Foles go to the open market too and don’t let him hold you hostage for a big lucrative deal cause he played 3 good games. Go get the cheapest QB option and just put him into the system to keep winning SuperBowls. Put your money into the defense. It’s THAT easy guys.

  61. It takes thirty seconds for a parroting headline reader to write “Pats are proven cheaters,” but every single one of you would crumble like a house of cards if every pressed to intelligently defend that claim with facts. In a back and forth debate, you would be destroyed.

The tapes were played on loop for the media at a Goodell press conference and broadcast to the whole world on Fox Sports. The Patriots never spied on anyone. They had a camera in the wrong place for 5 minutes of one game in 2007, right out in the open for the whole world to see. The excuses are really getting old.

  65. This is such a non story…..no team would ever show a trick play during a super bowl stadium walkthrough with hundreds of people milling around doing set up and security.

  66. Here is the question I will pose to Patriot fans: If BB is the greatest, smartest coach ever, then everything he does has value and is on purpose, right?

So if spygate wasn’t a big deal and didn’t provide an advantage, why did he do it?

This has been beaten to death but the idea was that filming signals was not helpful in the game being played. The film was used to get stats on tendencies for future games and it was helpful in that way. Of course trolls and simpletons don’t buy that it was not used in the present game though it makes sense given that it would be near impossible to get the film inside and in coaches hands, have them analyze and decode it and develop a plan for it all while tending to their in game duties. But of course trolls and simpletons do not go for logical reasoning. Anyone that actually watches the games and sees with their own eyes the players making plays can pretty much fathom that its the players doing their thing not film that is doing the winning. Unless of course you are not really a football fan. BTW does anyone recall that Pats v Miami game when Miami had all the Pats audibles? Hmmn there never was any outrage over that and it was clear and obvious cheating. I guess people just like to pile on teams that consistently win. Who’d a thought.

  71. Regarding Spygate… it’s simple.

I do not believe Belichick did it to cheat. If that was his intention… that camera would be hidden. It wasn’t.

He did it because of his arrogance. He arrogantly thought he was smarter than everyone else and so he knew that while other coaches and teams would follow the spygate memo he figured it would be a good idea to play word games with it -the whole “taping during a game” thing. He knew the point of the rule. He knew he was doing went against the spirit of the rule. Basically flipping off the commissioner. Unfortunately for him and the Patriots – Goodell always gets the last word.

One phone call to the league to ask for clarification would have prevented this whole deal. But no… Belichick is too smart and too good for that. His arrogance did him in and he got what he deserved.

  72. With all of that said – Pat fan is in no position to criticize other team’s fans for thinking the Patriots bent rules. You can’t tell other fans what to think. Sometimes perception is reality.

Unfortunately Pat fan will just have to wear this and like it. When the tale of the Patriots dynasty is told, this is part of their story, just like the titles are.

  73. @Regassert6: firstly, teams still video today, the problem was the camera was on the sideline, not a dozen feet away in the stands. Every team has guys watching the other bench for clues. The camera was only wrongly placed for the first 15mins of the first game after the rules changed for the start of 2007 season, and the footage was taken before the Pats could see it. As violations go its ridiculously ti y compared to PEDs, piping noise, or say in Denver’s case twice breaking the $57M cap by $29M.

    —————————————————————————————
Here was the deal, the taping of opposing signals was done by many teams and started in the 80’s and was routine in the 90’s. It was not, and still is not illegal. In a 2007 pre season the league sent memo to all teams staying they could tape signals from the sideline or coaches box for use in that game. Bill took that too literally and said, “well it’s not for this game” and continued to do it, getting “caught” (he wasn’t hiding it)week one. They could have had their tape guy in the stands or perhaps some other locations and it all would have been fine. So there is the story. The most overblown, sensationalized scandal until the next one. Deflate gate.

Eagles long-snapper: Team ran fake walk-through in the event Pats were watching
Posted by Mike Florio on February 8, 2018, 7:28 PM EST

Let’s hope that the immortal Rick Lovato has a good 15 year career in Philly. If he’s ever cut he may find that Belichick has a lot of contacts in the league who may not think highly of a lackey long snapper publicly accusing the Patriots of cheating without even a shred of evidence.

Ignorance of the law does not protect you from the consequences.

And if you think BB is a genius, you can’t follow up with the “Bill didn’t know it was wrong” card.

Really, then why did the Patriots get punished for it? And why exactly DID the Commish destroy the evidence?
Here is an excerpt from ESPN about the Spector investigation:
“Inside a room accessible only to Belichick and a few others, they found a library of scouting material containing videotapes of opponents’ signals, with detailed notes matching signals to plays for many teams going back seven seasons. Among them were handwritten diagrams of the defensive signals of the Pittsburgh Steelers, including the notes used in the January 2002 AFC Championship Game won by the Patriots 24-17. Yet almost as quickly as the tapes and notes were found, they were destroyed, on Goodell’s orders: League executives stomped the tapes into pieces and shredded the papers inside a Gillette Stadium conference room.”

Pretty sensitive snowflake. What you think you have the market cornered on attacks just because the Pats lost?

  80. Years ago I thought the Patriots cheated and the NFL scandals were valid. Over the years I’ve come to the realization that the NFL and media makes up stuff just to get attention. Spygate, uncapped salary year, bounty, bullying, deflate and other scandals were all misleading or bogus. To many the NFL has lost credibility.

  81. They wasted time because of a 10 year old story that was proven to be fabricated. That’s funny.

If the refs hadn’t gifted the Eagles 2 TDs (Clement and illegal formation on Philly Special) they would have lost that game and everyone would be laughing at their misinformed paranoia.

The Eagles have so much to thank those officials for, on so many levels.

    _________

right the eagles wone bc of what the pats didnt do, not bc of what the birds DID do. ok sure. I mean the pats haaaaad to be the best team this year. or. they. just. weren’t. Eagles were the better team in the superbowl and the entire season. get over it. your D stunk all year and it stunk in the superbowl. Game was a shootout and the birds out shot the pats. Maybe if butterfingers could catch u win… who knows.

oh and u say smart wasting time when the pats probably werent watching….. Folks we have a pats fan that admits they are cheaters…. just not necessarily at every moment. enjoy the offseason cheater.

  84. So people really think the Patriots have been in 8 Super Bowls, each decided by one score, through cheating? If they’re “cheating” they’re not very good at it. No matter how many times people pipe up that they “know” the Patriots did this or did that, it’s all just urban legend, it’s not true.

They got caught with a legal video camera in the wrong place. That’s all. I’m not even a Patriots fan, it’s just absurd how many people buy into this nonsense.

    |
The truth is, what you were is what you are!!!
    ======================
I’m confused on the importance of this? They got punished for filming in the wrong location. The ESPN excerpt about matching signals to the video and diagrams are all still a by-product of that. You understand that 1) matching signals to the tape from a designated location is fine and 2) changing those signals makes that effort useless. Right?

We’ve got more than a decade worth of data that proves exactly how much an advantage spygate yielded. Which is to say none at all. Feel free to prove otherwise though. My guess is you will continue to stick to the “why do it if it didn’t help angle”. In large part because you can’t prove what advantage was gained and will continue to deflect that onto Patriots fans who are willing to engage in that pointless effort.

Why destroy the evidence? Simple. Because keeping it would never be good enough for fans like you. I 100% disagree with how Goodell handled the destruction of the tapes. That said, if your being honest with yourself it never would have been enough. Destroyed tapes or not the Patriots will always be branded cheaters by you and fans of similar ilk. Stop pretending otherwise and move on.

  86. chap6869 – You do realize the Dolphins synched up signals to a tape and the NFL looked the other way, right? The act of doing so is\has been tolerated for quite some time (regardless if we agree it is legal or not). Let’s move past the notion that the act of doing so was unique to the Patriots. We know that not to be true. It also means the only unique act taken on by the Patriots was where the camera was located.

  87. Why destroy the evidence? Simple. Because keeping it would never be good enough for fans like you. I 100% disagree with how Goodell handled the destruction of the tapes. That said, if your being honest with yourself it never would have been enough.
    ============================

That’s the simple truth. No matter what the league did, Patriots haters would still claim the “real evidence” was being kept hidden from them. Goodell and Belichick could come to their house, watch all the tapes with them, answering questions and explaining what was going on and why and they still wouldn’t be satisfied. They’d still claim the league wasn’t releasing the really damaging information.
