Trevor Siemian on teammates recruiting Kirk Cousins: Part of the deal

The early days of the offseason have featured plenty of pitches by Broncos players to impending free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins about coming to play in Denver.

One Broncos player who has not been heard telling Cousins why he should join the squad is Trevor Siemian. That makes sense given Siemian’s two years as Denver’s starter and the fact that he remains under contract for the 2018 season, but Siemian told Mike Klis of KUSA that reaching out to Cousins also makes sense to him.

“It’s understandable,” Siemian said. “We won five games last year. In this league playing quarterback, you’re judged on wins and losses. I get it. It’s part of the deal. I just wish I would have done some things differently. It would have been nice to play a little better and get us a few more wins. But I’ll look back and I’ll learn from it and be better for it.”

There was a report this week that the Broncos are expected to shop Siemian in a trade and the quarterback didn’t have any comment on that possibility. A change of address might not result in an immediate crack at a starting job, but it might increase the chances of getting another one in the future with the Broncos clearly looking for someone else to lead their offense.

  1. Why are people surprised Siemian isn’t clamoring for Kirk and rolling out the red carpet? Would you be welcoming someone who is there to specifically replace you?

  2. I’m a little surprised a Denver player just hasn’t come out and told us how much the locker room thinks Siemian sucks. They couldn’t even wait until the end of last season to start saying how great Kirk Cousins was.

  3. I don’t think Siemian is as bad as a lot of people make him out to be, but he had his chance with a good roster and proved he’s not the guy. He shouldn’t be surprised.

  4. He is an above average backup and a class guy. I hope he has a long career holding a clipboard and being a great teammate. That said, the Bronco roster has a 1st round draft pick that wont be cut and an mr irrelevant named Kelly who has a rocket arm, mobility and a knucklehead. The will likely sign a vet and draft a QB so there simply isn’t room for Siemian.

Does anyone else see a problem with this? You will never get to the playoffs when your mentality is to only win a few more games. Striving for 7-9 and 8-8 does not instill confidence in your team…

  6. I’m not looking for a comment or endorsement about bringing in Cousins from Siemian or Kelly, both 7th round picks. They have a 1st round pick that was unable to win the job for 2yrs and his teammates that saw him in practice and the off-season are clamoring for Cousins. That tells me everything.

  7. no idea what Trevor’s contract is but would love him in GB backing up AR. No way GB goes into another season without a veteran back up.

What is the going rate for a good backup QB? How many draft picks would you give up for a backup QB? A conditional 7th?
