Browns trade Danny Shelton to Patriots for conditional pick

The man who once lifted the Commissioner off the ground has been dumped by the team that drafted him.

According to ESPN, the Browns have traded defensive lineman Danny Shelton to the Patriots. In exchange for Shelton, the Browns reportedly give up a mid-round 2019 pick and get back a 2018 pick.

Shelton has appeared in all but two games during his three NFL seasons, but he has yet to live up to his potential.

It’s the fourth trade the Browns have made in less than 24 hours, with receiver Jarvis Landry, quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and cornerback Damarious Randall in — and Shelton and quarterback DeShone Kizer out. Chances are the Browns will be doing plenty more this week, as they try to turn around a team that has won one game in the past two years.

Meanwhile, Patriots fans likely will be hoping that, the next time Shelton picks the Commissioner up, he doesn’t let him back down so softly.

  1. Patriots fans will celebrate this as the greatest trade off all time, trading for a browns player hahaha.

  2. Brown, Guy, Shelton on the Patriots D-line. Gives Coach Hoodie increased flexibility to use 3-4 when the game plan dictates (NOW just have to ensure there are some linebackers who can set the edge AND protect the middle of the field– the last a weaknesa that the Eagles fully exploited in SB51.

  3. Too bad. Danny always seemed like such a great teammate who never became the dominant defensive linemen his high pick promised. Best of luck with a great Patriots team!

  4. Florio I am glad you wrote this because honestly I was scratching my head when I saw the alert come through. “Shelton has appeared in all but two games during his three NFL seasons, but he has yet to live up to his potential. ” – yet Pro Football Focus tanks him “Above Average.” Then I note that is #35 out of 32 teams. Might be a good move.

I just hope this isn’t in prep for a run at Suh at Kirk Cousins money….

Why do these idiots keep dealing with the Patriots?

Honestly, even though Pats fan will (and have, in the comments section) consider this to be a massive coup, as Florio points out he hasn’t lived up to his expectations. I took the time to look up his stats and rankings, and I am ok with him not only leaving, but going to the Pats whom I do not like. He isn’t a game changer.

  6. These trades almost never work out for the pats. They think they can get more out of these guys who didn’t perform well on other teams but they end up being cut at the end of training camp. Not sure why B.B. keeps doing this.

  7. Patriots have a way of evaluation of players. If the Patriots want a player from you then that means that the Patriots feel you didn’t use the player in the right way and that they will.

Basically, the Patriots are telling you in a back door type of way that you don’t know what your doing; And the Patriots are probably right.

Why do you think they took Hogan and Gillmore from Buffalo? And any high Browns draft pick in the last 4 years that the Patriots might want will turn out to be a major contributor to the Patriots if they get him.

So trust and believe that the Patriots will make Shelton reach his potential; the potential that everybody saw in the draft when he was taken so high.

  8. awful trade…for the Stains….hoody took them to the cleaners….Hoody loves these big guys up front- Ted Washington ring a bell…what a great trade for the Pats…proof Browns gm is as clueless as last one..
note to nfl gm’s…quit trading with hoody- he is laughing at you as soon as he hangs up

  9. In exchange for Shelton, the Browns reportedly give up a mid-round 2019 pick and get back a 2018 pick.

So the pats get a player & a draft pick for a conditional pick.
Browns didn’t get any better at making deals.

  10. Browns….Excellent fan base…inept management. They will squander their pics and cap space again. One thing they have mastered. Turning gold to mud.

  11. 1rst, outstanding. 2nd, according to Schefter, the comp is the other way around. Pats get a pk in’18, Browns in ’19.

Like they did Harrison, or Bennett? If you look at their pickups over the year, FAR more failures than successes. They pick up anyone, which means, like internet dating, that if you ask enough people to dance someone will eventually say yes. Yes, they are going to hit on occasion, but it’s a serious reach to believe that 1) everyone wants to go to the Pats and 2) that everyone who does is suddenly successful. The facts say very different.

Shelton was hardly a bad performer in CLE. But he was only above average (PFR rankings) for a #12 pick. Browns can do better – and yes the Pats can do worse. But I somehow don’t see diamond in the rough here. I see another road test that is likely to end up in mediocrity.

    ____

Up to the point you wrote this, not one Pats fan said anything about it being a coup of any kind. I guess you just kind of make stuff up in your mind. huh?

As for the trade, he has potential – thats why he was the #12 pick. Pats didnt make this trade thinking he was going to be an all-pro. But they did think hed fit their scheme. Hes also very smart, academic all american/pac12. He gives the Pats either a very big D-line with Brown or a nice rotation/substitute. Not every trade is made thinking the guy is going to be lights out. Sometimes the trades are made to bolster a weakness. The Pats D had a LOT of weakness last year

  14. Another one of those Cleveland all stars that Brown fans don’t realize is one of the main reasons they were 1-31 the last 2 years. But ask a Brown fan and most of them will say how good he is. SMH. Dorsey getting rid of all of this dead weight finally.

  15. It’s not his fault he was over drafted. A fine player and person. He just plays a run stuffing role so most people see him as disappointing.

  16. The title is wrong.

the Browns cant get a conditional 2018 draft pick, unless the condition is how many players the Browns can trade in the next few weeks…

Conditional picks are generally based on playing time of the player being traded. Since Danny Shelton can’t play between now and the 2018 draft… the Patriots can not have given up a conditional 2018 pick for him. It’s more likely that they got a conditional pick back in the trade.

Did the Browns do well? That depends on what the 2018 pick is. If it’s one of the Patriots seconds or 3rds… then maybe this was a good trade. Shelton is a JAG with potential who was a poor fit for their defensive scheme.

  17. Ill never understand why teams do deals with the Pats. More often than not, the Pats get the better end of the deal. And why make the most consistently great team in the league better anyways? And if you have to, at least make them pay the heck up or don’t trade with them.

  18. Even Russell Bodine pushed Danny around. Now, that’s soft. Maybe, the Patriots can whip him into shape.

Yes, two Super Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl victory for the Pats ago.

Are you excited about what Jay Ajayi and Jarvis Landry are going to do for your ‘Fins next season?

  22. This is why the Patriots have been a dynasty. Belichick has come along at a time in NFL history when so many of the GM’s are totally incompetent. It’s like taking candy from a baby. Danny Shelton is a dominant D-Lineman.

  23. “Anyone else remember when Belichick traded away the NFL sack leader?”

Remember when the Fins made it to the AFCC or Super Bowl? No, I can’t either. Meanwhile I can certainly remember the Pats making 12 of the last 17 AFCC and 8 Super Bowls in that time frame, plus the ones in 85 and 96.

Burt, they did, it was… Bill Belichick, Browns coach 91-95.

  26. So it looks like the 5th rounder that B.B. was going to use to get Bennett from the Seahawks was coming by way if the Browns. Dorsey took care of his buddy Petersen by getting Bennett to Philly before completing the trade that would get NE the 5th rounder to trade for Bennett.

  27. Maybe Belichick can get him to play to his potential.

Perhaps a change of scenery will re-energize Shelton. It has to be difficult to play in Cleveland.
    .

  30. Shelton would seem to be an ideal 3-4 NT, a guy built to clog the middle and to absorb blocks. Did the Browns use him that way very much? If not, how it be said that he never really reached his potential? He looked pretty good the times I’ve seen him play. He’ll likely be very successful with NE.

In exchange for a 2018 pick, Pats get a healthy D lineman and a 2019 pick. Even if Shelton proves nothing more than a depth guy that was an easy trade for Belichick, with no downside but clear potential upside. He does this a lot and all the salty hate just proves how much it works.

  33. “Basically, the Patriots are telling you in a back door type of way that you don’t know what your doing; And the Patriots are probably right.”

N.E. looks at a ton of players and many never make the roster. Have noticed over the last several years they often bring in former GB draft picks that couldn’t crack the roster. Lawrence Guy was a long ago CB 7th rounder. Some GB TEs long before Bennett played musical chairs. The Patriots have been right. A few times. And wrong many, many more times.

Plus, they wouldn’t have so many holes to fill if they had decent drafts or kept their draft picks. It finally caught up to them on defense.

  34. Any trade Belichick makes will always be lauded as a genius move by patsy fans.

If Bill brewed a batch of Kool-Aid, these lemmings would line up immediately, straws ready.

    Bust.

Actually they Didn’t but if it makes you feel better to type it.

  36. Take a look at the DT prospects that are out there in the upcoming draft or put Shelton into the list of free agents and then consider this trade. It is rock solid.

Alan Branch or Ricky Jean will provide positional leadership that this twenty-four year old has never had. Add in coach Belichick and coach Flores to that mix and the kid will excel.

    Great add for minimal cost.

  37. Good move by the Pats. No pass rush last year, the linebackers are average at best and the secondary is less than average.

Need the lineman to keep the o line off their backers and decrease the time the corners need to cover.

I am an Eagles fan, but the birds provided the entire league how to beat the Patriots last year. Right end passes down the seam (sound familiar) and let your receivers go deep. Now how do the Pats stop the run?

  38. Your draft pick swap is backwards. The Pats get Shelton and a 2018 5th round pick. They give up a conditional 2019 3rd rounder which will probably be a compensatory pick anyways. Chess vs checkers.

  44. First they whiff on a QB and now this. The Browns off-season moves have been very puzzling so far.

  45. “I am an Eagles fan, but the birds provided the entire league how to beat the Patriots last year. Right end passes down the seam (sound familiar) and let your receivers go deep. Now how do the Pats stop the run?”

Not really. The Pats D was decimated and playing a bunch of scrubs along with the remaining starters, further undercut by Belichick pulling Butler right before the game.

And there’s going to be quite a bit of turnover in the Pats D in the offseason I think. Combined with not many teams having as good a personnel group as the Eagles, I think we’ll see another 12-4 or 13-3 season from the Pats in the coming season.

The whole “blueprint” thing is a lame claim anyway. If it was really the way to constantly beat the Pats, it would have been figured out long ago. The Pats offense and defense constantly morph what they do, sometimes resetting 3 – 5 times a year depending on injuries and how things are going. What worked last week or last season is unlikely to work the following week.

Not to mention the Pats still put up 33 points on the Eagles D and were still in it in the last few seconds of the game.

Great Super Bowl the Eagles played their hearts out and earned the victory.

Goodbye and good riddance. Hope this means making a play for Suh and/or or Pat Sims.

    ————————
Suh would need to get cut and signed to a new deal. That current contract is an albatross.

  47. All the Browns 1rst rnd pks from 2009-15 are gone. 2016 may be gone soon too. They can’t all be stiffs. Coaching has got to be a part of it. Good chance they can take this high pk, whom they wanted last yr too, and make him into a player in the right system. A lot of front 7 players will be back from IR this yr as well.

  48. The Pats have had 2 picks higher than 23 over the last 18 years (10 and 17). They only get higher talent thru this kind of trade.

When Shelton came out he was thought to be a top 15 talent. And while he was never a “game changer”, he was a decent player for the Browns last 3 years. I don’t see the problem with trading for someone who isn’t a “game changer”. The Pats haven’t had a “game changer” on their DL for the entirety of their 18-year dynasty, so why does it have to start now.

If Shelton is “merely” a solid run-stopper who can occasionally provide some up the middle push, then this is just another low-risk trade that will make the Pats a better team. That is how the Pat’s do business.

It is isn’t easy to maintain the kind of success the Pats have had when you’re average draft position in every round has been #27.

The only way the Pats can get high pick talent is to hope that someone’s disappointment fairs better in NE. Some work out, some don’t. But at least the Pats take these low-risk shots.

As a Pats fan you have to love this unprecedented run of success. The only downside is that you know going in that 90% of the players caught up in all the draft buzz, are players you KNOW will never get to be Patriots. 😉

  49. The guy is not a bad player whatsoever and is far from a draft bust. If the Browns kept him he’d probably be on the bench in 2018 which is why he was trade fodder. I fully expect Corey Coleman to also be on the trade block soon as he’s one decent free agent pickup from being benched as well. The Browns were a team that was mostly young players. A lot of them are going to be on new teams just because the team will need to make room to bring in free agents and they’re actually stacking their roster.

  50. I don’t know, the Pats got a big, young, healthy, experienced D-lineman plus a 5th rounder for almost nothing (a compensatory pick. Seems like a good deal.

  51. The Browns will find out soon that Dorsey, while being a decent scout at the dumpster dive, he’s a terrible manager and cap doofus that will eventually leave that franchise in cap hell as long as he’s there.

  52. Remember when everyone thought Barkevious Mingo going to the Pats was going to be great…well same thing with Danny Shelton, except Shelton is mediocre at best and Mingo is just god awful!!!!

  53. How can a Eagles fan make any educated statement on another teams defense. The Eagles defense did not cover themselves in glory . It can also be said the Patriots showed the league how to beat the Eagles. Very sub-par secondary .

Who’s everyone? Mingo stunk in college and he stunk in the pros. Shelton was a beast in college and he’s a beast in the pros. Bill Belichick has created the biggest dynasty in NFL history by taking advantage of organizations that weren’t quite as good at evaluating talent.

They only work out half the times at best. But thats enough. Belichick does not dwell on the ones that dont work out, he gets them in camp or practice (if its in the season) and sizes them up. He is quick to cut them as soon as it becomes apparent they arent what he was hoping for, he doesnt waste roster slots trying to drny mistakes. And just as quick he moves on to another guy, rinse and repeat. This is how he finds good players for reasonable money that adds up to deep and talented rosters that are always contenders, go to the SB 50% of the seasons hes been doing this and winning SB about a third of the time hes been doing this. Thats a crazy high percentage of successes. Speaking of guys he picked up on the cheap who then showed in camp and peactice they were a good player check out that Tom Brady guy.

  66. Pats have really not replaced Vince Wilfork. Branch was supposed to be the guy, but he seemed to take a step backward this year.

Wilfork (and Ted Washington before him) were usually immovable. They were often double teamed, and took a lot of pressure off the LBs, who did not have to pay a great deal of attention to inside running plays.

Shelton could give them a similar presence. Seattle is blowing up their defense, while the Pats seem to be taking a more incremental approach. Will be interesting to see both teams in 2018.

Truth is all his trades and FA signings are midlevel guys – aside from Moss and quite a few work out – like Welker, Hogan, Lewis, Chung, Rowe, Guy, Amendola, Pfifer, Dillon, Vrabel, Bulkhead, Cooks, Van Noy, Bennet., Hicks, etc. Many of these later sign elsewhere because they perform, like Hicks, Ayers, Bennet, etc. Some don’t work like Ealy, Allen, Bostic, Adages Thomas, ++

Losing a 3rd round pick in 2019 could be a huge loss, but we all know BB, he will ensure Shelton plays “part time” so the comp pick is low/ just like he did with Eric Rowe.

  70. I hope the Patriots haters aren’t betting the basement on all of their predictions.

Anyone who knocks this trade from the Patriots perspective, no matter how it turns out, must hide their money under the mattress and be so risk adverse they don’t leave their home.

He fits a specific need. Has the unique requisite skills for that specific role. Is being acquired for the equivalent of dropping down one round (mid round). The Patriots don’t normally get a chance acquire this type of talent unless a guy is coming off injury or has another red flag.

  71. Look at how the Patriots did against the run last season, and it becomes obvious why they picked up a 325lb+ interior lineman. Alan Branch appeared to just be there to cash a check last season, and even if Shelton is “average,” it will be an upgrade.

Couple this with the fact that the trade only required swapping what will likely be a late 3rd rounder next year for one of the Brown’s 5th rounders this year with the fact that the guy is still young and on a rookie contract, and it makes perfect sense. It doesn’t solve their run-stopping problems, but it could help contribute to the answer.

Remember when everyone thought Barkevious Mingo going to the Pats was going to be great…well same thing with Danny Shelton, except Shelton is mediocre at best and Mingo is just god awful!!!!
    ——————-
Remember Welker, Hogan, Lewis. Remember a deep draft QB that became their top reciever? Remember another deep draft QB that became the GOAT? Vrabel? Hicks? Van Noy? These are all deals that were dismissed as Belichick betting on the wrong players. Even when he bet next to nothing on them guys would talk like he gave the team away.

The difference from other teams is Belichick doesnt go pay top prices at Jared for his diamonds, he digs them out of the mud for next to nothimg.

  73. Ya for all you BB haters on trades he always seems to pull a rabbit out of his hat! Drafting every year at the last 3 picks won’t get you the pure hybrid players. So you have to use other methods for your madness! We as Patriot’s fans love this just look at the other 25 teams that sit idle and DO NOTHING! You have to keep up with your rivals and play and trade outside the box! Look at the results though last 4 years SB Champs/AFC Championship Game/SB Champs/SB loss. So go ahead KEEP HATING and we will keep on picking up your unwanted players!!! “I approve of this message” the Hoodie monster!

  74. This could be a good learning experience for us fans and the people that judge trades by reciting stats. My guess would be, based on studying NFL history, that Shelton will play at the same level, yet his numbers will be considerably better. He’ll have more sacks and pressures because the Pats will be ahead, and the opposing QB will have to stand in the pocket. He’ll also draw double teams, and his teammates will get the sacks. The film will show a dominant player, just like in Cleveland. This is how BB gets top ten players without ever having a top ten pick. There are only a small handful of GM’s who get it. That’s another reason for BB’s success. He’s competing against GM’s that will most likely get fired in a year or two. Those are just facts.

  75. And your team couldn’t stop Nick Foles – that wasn’t even Carson Wentz shredding your defense.

    ___

So, we can put you down as an eagles fan who thinks Foles is overrated and probably shouldnt fetch much in a trade?

It was an 8 point game sheesh. Convenient how many forget how Foles shredded a much better defense the week before.

The truth of the Belicheat era in Cleveland is the loser hadn’t yet figured out HOW to cheat and without his cheating was trash. Historically bad drafts, cutting a franchise QB for a scrub back up QB, hiring Mike The Moron Lombardi to run his entire personnel department ect. He was well known as a joke of a coach until the cheating started up in New England and bandwagon Pats fans started rewriting history.
    =============
The same Belicheat who got the Browns to 11 wins and a playoff game. Both of which hasn’t been done since. Largely in part to using that scrub QB. I suppose there’s always Marty Schottenheimer. LOL There’s something to be said for personnel and being in a position to do something about it. For as much as fans want to decry the cheating as the reason for his success in NE it’s probably more likely it’s the result of having final personnel decisions. Not that it matters. It a whole lot more easier and convenient to trot out the tired old cheating mantra.

    ===============
First, I agree re: the need for DL. They need a stud but it’s looking more and more like they will continue to platoon max effort guys. Shelton isn’t the answer he’s a piece of the puzzle. More of the same at best.

The Eagles completed 2 of 3 on the Butler-less side of the field. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Butler would have changed that significantly (or at all) but I’m not entirely certain 10 yards is a more compelling recipe. Getting a solid\decent CB on that side will help 3rd (and 4th) down conversions. The down lineman and linebackers are still the more glaring need.

It finally caught up to them on defense

  80. A team that goes 0-16 doesn’t unload one of its better players. Obviously, Belichick got hoodwinked again. Another man to go down with this sinking ship.

Just because it’s the Patriots looking through the dumpster for other teams trash… it doesn’t mean most of the time they won’t find trash. That’s just the way it is.

Shelton was a big time bust, and he is not even close to the answer to the Pats problems on that side of the football. Not that different from Cooper or Mingo. When mediocre or bad teams happily let other guys go like that especially after an investment like the Browns made of a high draft pick… assume it’s for a very good reason.

The Pats so called “genius” on roster building is very overrated. They’re not the only team that hits on value acquisitions. They miss on many more like every team. People even give the Pats credit for drafting Brady forgetting that they (like every team) passed on Brady many times before taking him. If they were as genius as Pat fan says they are, Brady would have been taken immediately when they had a chance.

  82. It a whole lot more easier and convenient to trot out the tired old cheating mantra.

Pat fan insists they can tell other fans what to think of their team. It doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately the controversies are just as much a part of your story as the 5 titles and 8 AFC championships are.

You can thank Belichick for that. Spygate is 100% on him and his thinking that he was smarter than everyone else. The Pats and their fans will forever pay for his arrogance.

Belichick had the worst winning percentage of any Browns coach when he got fired. One could make the argument he is the reason how the Browns fell into their losing mentality.

    ===================
No. Belichick never coached the Browns as we know them today. He coached the Baltimore Ravens before they became the Ravens. Today’s Browns are a completely different franchise and has nothing to do with the Ravens.

  84. The Pats so called “genius” on roster building is very overrated. They’re not the only team that hits on value acquisitions. They miss on many more like every team.
    =====

    Why deal with them?

They are unquestionably the most successful team of the last 20 years, and as long as they have Brady, they should be considered the top of the heap.

Why do ANYTHING that could make them better?

Operate as if it were 2001 and there were only 30 other teams in the League. The Patriots should be treated like they didn’t exist.

I don’t see many people claiming Shelton is the answer.

Re: Brady. Or it could be recognizing talent. Any team that grabbed Brady early would have been crazy given his college resume. It’s just silly to suggest any team should have grabbed early. So the genius is knowing when to take the talent and seeing the hidden value. Both of which “could” be relevant as it relates to Shelton.

Sure. But it’s monopoly money either that you can use anytime you please. Kind of like equating Belichicks success to cheating when there’a plethora of other likely more plausible reasons to explain it.

Other fans can think what they want of the Pats. No matter how wrong they are. 🙂
