Report: Jets offered Kirk Cousins $30 million per year

Appearing in recent weeks on PFT Live, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News predicted that the Jets would offer quarterback Kirk Cousins the most money, but that he would choose to sign with another team.

Based on a new report from Mehta, that seems to be exactly what happened.

According to Mehta, the Jets offered Cousins $30 million per year, $2 million more per year ($6 million total) than the Vikings offered on a three-year deal. Cousins took the lower offer.

Mehta explains that the Jets provided agent Mike McCartney with a deadline on Tuesday, because the Jets were holding up cash that could have gone to other free agents. The Jets also were concerned, per Mehta, that McCartney hoped to ensure that another one of his clients, Josh McCown, would end up back with the Jets. McCown re-signed, on a one-year, $10 million deal.

“There are some folks on One Jets Drive who believe this was all designed to get McCown back as the Jets starter (for now),” Mehta writes. “Perhaps that’s sour grapes, but it is a real sentiment in the building.”

It that’s how the Jets feel, they only have themselves to blame. They knew McCartney represented both Cousins and McCown, and they could have brought this all to a head a lot earlier.

Yes, it would have been tampering. But if the Jets had hoped to have their full allotment of cash and cap space for the purposes of chasing other free agents if Cousins wasn’t interested, they could have (and should have) brought things to a head before Tuesday morning.

At the latest, they should have made an offer right out of the gates to McCartney for Cousins with a short deadline for taking it or not. By pushing things to Tuesday, the Jets necessarily put themselves in a tough spot.

So, again, they only have themselves to blame.

  1. I just dont understand how this guy and sam bradford is worth more than two scoops of ice cream

  2. Why are the Jets continuously so dumb? The only way Cousins would have made sense is if the Jets had their base built through the draft the last 2-3 years. They don’t. They don’t have really any attractive young players.

They have busts all over the field like Leonard Williams who does nothing during games entering his 4th season, and needing a deal or to be dealt. Trading the guy would be their best move, because stretching out his mediocrity for 2 more years and then letting him walk, does nothing. Try to recoup some of that now and take a high 2nd rder and run.

Maye looked like a solid pick and the other guy at Safety is wildly over-hyped as per usual.

Darrin Lee is a certified bust as well.

They just don’t get it and apparently never will. They would have rented Cousins for 3 years and then as he was leaving, MAYBE they’d be competing for a wild card.

You don’t build a team and challenge the Pats overnight. When are these AFCE teams going to get this through their thick heads?

    I’m loving it, though.

  3. They’ve known he was probably going to the Vikings for weeks. They should have blown him away with a much bigger offer right away and told him it disappears at the end of the day. They had to have known he wasn’t going to pick them for an extra $6 million.

  4. The Jets got so lucky.

Their backup plan looks a lot better than what they originally wanted to do, that defense of they have now is going to be right there with LA, JAX, and Minnesota next season. Jets fans should be excited.

  5. I’m happy that Cousin didn’t sign with Jets, and that leave them smaller cash payroll to get other guys, and resign couple guys with new contracts in future.

I be more happier if Jets get Baker Mayfield on draft day or any QBs.

    Tylaw is a clueless Troll.

  6. His last pass as a Redskin in 2016 and 2017 with the gane on the line vs the Blue New York Team :

    Game ending interception.
Game ending interception returned for a touchdown.

BUH BYE LOSER. Jets you should thank GOD they said no.

  7. Why didn’t they offer $34M+? A $2M differential wasn’t big enough for Cuz but $6M more a year may have helped to feed his family. Yes and the Jets enticed Josh McCown to return and lured Teddy Bridgewater as his backup.

  8. Im just amazed at how bad the front office wanted this guy you have qb’s in this draft in Darnold, Rosen and Baker who are going to be solid Qb’s in the nfl go and get one this guy is so overrated it’s sickening to think that this is how the front office thinks smh

  9. Makes no difference. Hey, if this guy wins a super bowl or two, you tip your cap to him and wish he came to NY. Otherwise I think we’ll be better off with one of the kids in the draft whose salary we can control for four or five years who will prolly have more upside, because Kirk hasn’t one a darn thing yet.

Are you a New England fan? Because if you watched, Jamal Adams had his way with Rob Gronkowski 1 on 1 in week 17, and in that abomination of a game in week 6 most of Gronk’s yards came from the lousiest penalty flags I have ever seen. He was elite for a rookie safety.

Just admit it, you wish you had Leonard Williams, he graded out on PFF higher than every single defensive end that plays for you guys. It must of been tough watching Trey Flowers get blanked by Eli Rogers and JuJu Smith Schuster LOL.

Darron Lee isn’t that good, but improved greatly in his second year he simply needs to bulk up more.

The Jets are still flush with cash to resign their own despite spending this offseason.

Any other moronic takes you want to throw out there?

  11. The Jets may have offered a deal that would average $30m/year on paper, but it doesn’t say whether it was all guaranteed money like he’s getting from the Vikings.

I dunno, Chad Hansen is quite a dapper fellow. Only 23 too.

  13. And the Jets troll, you know who, shows up once again on a Jets posting. Never posts in a Patriots column, just on a Jets column. Too funny.

  14. Insane to overpay a guy who really hasnt accomplished nothing significant. Desperation mode by the Jets.

  15. As a Viking fan, I can honestly say I’m not all that excited about the Cousins signing. However, it makes more sense for the Vikes to sign Cousins given the comparative states of the teams – not sure why the Jets would want to focus all their time and money on a 29 yr old QB till their roster was set for more success.

  16. That extra money offered by the Jets would not make up for the punitive tax rate found in New York. Cousins is actually making more money in Minnesota even though he took less money.

  17. The jets served their purpose and that was to get the Vikings to open il their check books for this bozo. Be thankful he didn’t come to the jets as he doesn’t have the talent to make them better on his own. Minnesota, perhaps he can get them over the hump but I’m not convinced he’s that much better than Keenum.

Also to say the jets don’t have any good players is just flat out false. Leonard Williams is most certainly not a bust. Darrin Lee isn’t the best but he is still young. The lsu safety is gonna be all pro in a couple years. But yes, the jets aren’t still a few pieces away and investing that kind of money for a jag like cousins is just plain dumb.

  18. @tylawspick6

You day revolves around the Jets. To say no young players? Jamal adams is a certified superstar in the making shut down fragile Gronk. Marcus Maye is a stud. Robby Anderson is better than any WR on your Pats (yes including Cooks/Edleman) RObby cant be covered deep I know you know hes legit (Just a stupid mofo off the field lol) Give Robby Brady and hes unstoppable.

Leonard WIliams is a top DLineman in NFL

Ll you do is “LOL” or Troll Jets players no matter who it is “they suck’ or “typical jets” but if your Pats had same player or signed same player you would be like ” Genius BB”…Cut the crap

I think Chad Hansen will be a solid WR with some coaching.

  19. and……Easley, Malcom brown dime a dozen 2 down stuffer), Cyrus Jones, Jordan Richards, Thuney, Derek Rivers bum knee, Brissett traded for LOL Phillip Dorsett bust,

Only good pick was JimmyG but “Genius” BB made a fantastic deal LOL. Also let best pass rusher chandler Jones walk and backed up the truck to fragile bum Donta. “Genius”

Don’t bring up draft busts bc NE resume in recent years is as bad as it gets.

    41-33 *Cough Cough*

  20. Jets lucked out on not wasting 90mil on just a little above average QB. Was not smart to make an offer like that. If cousins was elite, he’d still be with Redskins and they would be contenders again.

  21. Cousins never had any intention of signing with the Jets. They were just leverage to get more dollars from the Vikings. The Vikings were always bidding against themselves.

  22. Cousins hasn’t done anything in his careeer to gain the contract he has gotten. Okay he had 4 years back to back 4K yard seasons. Played in two playoff games where one he was a back up and 2 he was a starter back in the day and lost. This guy is a bum of a QB. Not a team lead but a M.E. player. I’m so happy as a Jet fan that we didn’t sign a QB that only wants to play for himself and not the team. This would of been like signing “Martel” from “The Replacements”.

Sanchez led his team to back to back AFC Champ games and was Guaranteed a whole lot less.

    Let’s Go Bridgewater

Had the Redskins signed Cousins to another franchise tender offer this year, it would have cost them $34.5 mil for one season with 100% of that amount counting against their cap.

That is why he is not still a Redskin. The Redskins couldn’t afford him anymore due to their cap mismanagement.

Cousins only counts $24 mil against the Vikings cap this year and they still have $26 mil in cap space left.

Arizona, Denver, NY Jets, Washington and the Vikings all wanted Cousins.

Cousins didn’t want to be in Washington any longer and the Jets are a dumpster fire at present. Arizona and Denver didn’t have enough cap space to get the deal done.

I’m interested to see what kind of deal Rodgers demands the Packers to pay and what kind of cap hell that will put Green Bay in. After cutting Nelson and trading Randall, the Packers currently show they have $29 mil in cap space, but that number does’t include Graham or Wilkerson yet.

Rodgers currently counts over $20 mil against the cap and his new cap number may double as he will want more then cousins and have it all guaranteed to placate his ego.

  24. The Jets don’t have themselves to blame, the Vikings are a MUCH better team.
Why play for a crap team when you can play for a team that could reach the super bowl.

I wish you were right but you are not when it comes to taxes. Mn is still top three, I believe, in the country. However, a couple of million will buy you a very nice home rather than a condo. State income tax top rate is 9.85%. Property taxes and sales taxes are very high as well.
