Saints sign Benjamin Watson

Saints coach Sean Payton said this week that adding a tight end was a “must” for the team this offseason and the Saints got one on Wednesday.

PFT has learned, via a league source, that Benjamin Watson has agreed to a one-year deal. It will be Watson’s second stint in New Orleans as he played for the Saints from 2013-2015.

Watson wasn’t the only former Saint that the team showed interest in bringing back this offseason. They pursued Jimmy Graham before Graham agreed to a three-year deal with the Packers early in free agency.

Watson had 61 catches for 522 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games with the Ravens last season. He joins Coby Fleener, Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui on the tight end depth chart in New Orleans.

  1. Welcome back, Mr. Watson.

Not only does this 37 year old become the best TE currently on the roster, but you can’t acquire a better team leader and ambassador for the organization. Win win.

  2. Welcome back, Watson!!! WHO DAT!!! Let’s get this division championship (repeat), NFC Championship, and another SuperBowl championship! Let’s Geaux Saints and Who Dat Nation!

  3. Yea but get rid of Coby Fleener he sucks!! He has spurts. But all game long he is horrible. Watson was a beast when he was with us. I like the 1 year deal. Then get him for 2 more years next year and bring in a youngster in the draft as TE and then a OL and a DL and #2 receiver opposite of Can’t guard Mike!! We are good!! Who DAT BABY!!

  4. Good signing Sean two years late but ok now how about beung a pal and getting us a DE that can cause some problems with a trade cause there is nobody left in free agency and we all know your gonna trade up and get yourself a new toy on offense with 1st pick so pleade throw another bone ar the DL make a splash your close but minny got better and and the nfc is just brutal

  5. Dump Fleener and kick the tires on Antonio Gates and just go with some proven vets and draft a young rookie with potential and let him learn from the greats.

  6. It doesn’t make sense to dump Fleener this year. They would only save 3m in cap space and would have to pay him 5m anyway. Might as well keep him for just 3m.

He will be released in the off-season next year guaranteed.

  7. Well Ben is back in Nawlins again. In Bmore, he’ll be sorely missed.
One of the truly Greats’ of the game, on and off the field. All the best!

  8. This is a great signing for both sides. The Saints have rejuvenated or got what’s left in the tank on older players more than once. To give this guy the opportunity is also a win.
