FOX: Color Rush uniforms are going away

Color Rush has cut to black.

With FOX inheriting the full Thursday Night Football schedule, FOX says that Thursday Night Football no longer will consist of alternative, monochromatic uniforms.

Via Jason Barrett of Barrett Sports Media, FOX Sports Executive Vice President of Programming, Research and Content Strategy Bill Wanger said Tuesday at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas that Color Rush uniforms will no longer be used on Thursday nights. Wanger explained that hardcore fans don’t need gimmicks to watch.

Wanger also said that the game schedule for Thursday night will be stronger than it’s been in the past. That may be news to CBS and NBC, which could see their Sunday slates become less potent if the NFL pushes “better” games to Thursday nights.

Many have complained about and/or lampooned the Color Rush concept, which was subtly downplayed last year with the league quietly allowing teams like Washington (which had a garish yellow-on-yellow getup) to not go through with it.

This won’t stop teams from embracing the Color Rush concept on their own. Last week, the Titans unveiled an array of uniforms that includes the light-blue-on-light-blue Smurf look, specifically dubbed the team’s “Color Rush” uniforms.

So while Color Rush may be dead as a mandatory, across-the-board program, it possibly still exists as a voluntary, periodic, alternate uniform program. And if Thursday night is going to become even more special, maybe that’s when teams will choose on their own to wear them.

  1. AMEN…The whole gismo made the games look like a cheap knock-off electric football set…It’s hard enough looking at 1920s style uniforms when they drag them out!

  2. Gosh, I will really miss those trippy uniforms. Watching the games with the crazy colors sometimes gave me flashbacks from the 60’s…

  3. It may not have been what was wrong with TNF, but it sure was something wrong with football in general. Give me a good product on the field. I don’t need gimmicks.

  4. Next they should ban alternated uniforms and throwback uniforms. If they cannot use the correct helmet to match the throwback uniform they should not use them.

  5. I liked the Broncos color rush uniforms. I always preferred the orange jersey’s being the alternative. Chalk that up to more Josh Mcdaniels residue

  6. The Thursday games were so bad that the NFL tried to trick them up with these ugly uniforms. Unwatchable.

  7. I don’t really mind the idea of a monochromatic uniform – but did they have to wear such gawdawful ones? Some of them actually hurt my eyes.

And let’s not forget the time they forgot to take colorblindness into consideration . . .

  8. Now let’s hope Nike stops “millenializing” team jerseys with ugly, misguided redesigns.

  9. I liked it. Then again my teams color rush is black. Hope they allow a second helmet so we get some good throw backs again. We want to see some kelly green here in the land of champions.

  10. Excellent. Suggest those teams that play Thursday have a Saturday game week before and Monday night game after. Computers make that an easy schedule . Saturday game would be an A M game before college games start.

  11. There were some awful Color Rush setups, but there were some really clean looking ones as well.

The Jets all green, the Colts all blue, the Titans all light blue, the Panthers all teal.. not bad looks.

It’s just too bad teams like the Jaguars, Seahawks, and Redskins had to visually assault us with their setups.

  12. bunch of sticks in the mud here complaining just to complain. It’s one game a week..is it really ruining your lives?

  13. Those uniforms made the players look like a bunch of grown men running around in their pajamas. Thankfully, they don’t have to wear them anymore.

  14. As a colorblind fan who had to struggle through the Jets/Bills game I cannot be happier. Not to mention the highlighter rams/hawks uniforms were too hard on the eyes to watch.

Now I just have to hope and pray Reebok comes back (unlikely as Nike signed a new extension).

    Please go away Nike.

Just out of interest, I wonder how many of those hideous jerseys were sold to fans across the country.

    —————-
Not many. You know that contributed to the decision. Plus Nike was probably losing interest in paying big for a promotion that was producing more jokes than brand exposure.

Nobody said it ruined their lives. Just most fans believe they are ugly looking. I am red/green color blind and could not tell the difference between jets/bills (although yes it was only one game that presented a problem). Still ugly.

  17. good..thursday night games also need to go away…at least wait to start them & not every team should get them. id say start with thanksgiving until week 16. not every week.

  18. They called it color rush and then outfitted Dallas, Cincy, Green Bay & others in all white. Made no sense.

..that was for colorblind people that couldnt distinguish the two bright colors

  20. I can do without the color rush jerseys, but the NFL needs to allow a second helmet for players so teams can wear their throwbacks and have matching helmets. The eagles kelley green jerseys just wouldn’t look right with their current midnight green helmets.

  21. Throwback Thursdays markets itself. I don’t know how they could have not tried just throwback uniforms instead of the color rush.

  22. “Wanger explained that hardcore fans don’t need gimmicks to watch.”

Which is why so many of us don’t watch TNF.

Love it or hate it color rush was good marketing.

You do realize that ‘good marketing’ means someone buys something right?
(Don’t answer, obviously you don’t. The question was rhetorical)

  23. Well crap! I know a lot of folks didn’t like these in general, but the Steelers color rush unis are great! Much much better than the throwback bumblebee things they used to wear from time to time. I like their black jerseys with gold trim/white text and the gold pants with black/white trim the best, and the color rush were a close version of that. Ah well whatever, most of the other teams fans hate theirs it seems.

Go Steelers! And their unis 😀

  24. Looking forward to see what robot players wear in the NFL 2.0- hopefully they keep kick offs in the cybernetic league upgrade

  25. why not have teams play Thursday’s only after bye week
this way better preparation and it will seem like a second bye week following
win win for everyone and a far better alternative to what they have now

yeah and goodell tells the truth too

  27. “Love it or hate it color rush was good marketing.”

I doubt it. The whole point was another style jersey to sell the bumpkins I mean fans, and if they had sold many they would still be using them.

  28. How about we just get rid of Thursday Night football all together? We won’t have to deal with crappy games, crappy announcers or crappy uniforms. That isn’t just the right thing to do, it is THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!!!!

  29. Some were decent. Some were hideous. It was just another way for the NFL marketing department to get people to buy jerseys.

Glad it’s gone. However, the NFL, it’s franchises, and players made money off of it, which was the main purpose.

  30. Amen. Now if only the National Anthem protesters were carted off in handcuffs and sent to jail where they can squat on their own time.

  31. Nooooooo ….. said no one ever. Now if they could just clean up the sloppy play, turnovers and boring play we’d really have something to get excited about.

  32. Good to see everyone on here is going to tune into the NFL.
It’s as if no one has the backbone to stand by their “Everyone’s gotta stand in this free country for the Anthem” convictions.
    Typical.

  33. Were those uniforms really supposed to entice people to watch the games? Surely not. At any rate, I actually like the Saints’ color rush jerseys. Hopefully they’ll go on sale.

  34. Glad they’re gone! It was a dumb idea from the beginning. I agree with one of the previous posters, go with throwback uniforms instead. That reminiscent of an era where things actually made sense in the NFL.

  35. Im partially colorblind – some of the combinations they used were actually making it hard to tell the sides apart.

Theres much to be said for one team always wearing white jerseys.

  36. Roger Goodell’s very best decision as Commissioner but not quite enough to silence the booing when he was on stage on Draft Day.

  37. I liked the Patriots Color Rush Jersey. They should go to that as the third jersey.

Most of them were so terrible It was hard to watch though. So good decision.

  38. What took them so long? No one liked them from the get go, and assumed it was just a marketing ploy. Of course, adding another jersey as marketing, hoping to sell more of them, only works if they are not hideous looking.

  39. I hope the Saints continue to use their Color Rush uniforms. They gave a classy retro look as an alternative uniform, and aren’t “garish” at all. I really prefer them over the “all blacks” that the Saints like to wear. I think they should use the color rush gear as their new “away” uniforms going forward.

I don’t watch the Thursday games. They were always so sloppy and ugly

    ————–

If you don’t watch the games, how could you possibly know that they were “always” so sloppy and ugly?

As for the uniforms, remember when the Jets (all green_ played the Bills (all red) and color blind people could not tell who was on which team? Just one more thing the-gang-that-couldn’t-shoot-straight didn’t consider…

The fools won’t be kneeling anymore. Enjoy cupcake!

  43. I loved the color rush uni’s.
Except for my Jags ugly poo/baby throwup yellow/gold.

Thought the idea was awesome and shouldn’t have been limited to TNF, maybe have a “color rush” week.

  44. Color rush uni’s gone. Check
Now if they could just get rid of Goodell, Joe Buck, Kenny Albert, and Collinsworth.

  45. They got rid of the ugly uniforms because of economic, clear and simple. If a product is not selling, then they’ll discontinue them and find an excuse.

  46. Steelers had the best color rush uniforms. Better than their hilarious bumblebee throwbacks. MOst of the teams did have some bad ones though.

  47. The Patriots had some decent looking CR unis. Navy blue and all white. They still have the best throwback unis in the league, I just wish they would wear them more often.
