Report: Tom Brady still has not committed to playing in 2018

Getty Images

Tom Brady has mused many times about playing well into his 40s. But officially, the 40-year-old Brady hasn’t even decided for sure to play past 40.

That’s the word from Adam Schefter of ESPN, who reports that Brady has not committed to playing the 2018 season. Schefter adds, however, that people close to Brady do expect him to play this year.

That raises the question of what exactly it would mean to “commit to” playing the season anyway. Players rarely announce a formal commitment to playing. It’s generally just assumed that a player under contract to an NFL team is going to play until he announces his retirement.

However, teams have been burned in the past by assuming a star player was going to play. Barry Sanders spent an offseason declining to commit to playing, and then announced his retirement on the eve of training camp in 1999. That caught the Lions off-guard, and made them wish they had prepared for Sanders’ departure better.

Which means the Patriots may need to be prepared for the possibility of Brady announcing his retirement at some point between now and the start of the regular season. And the best way to prepare would be to draft a quarterback next week. The Patriots have two first-round picks and two second-round picks, and if Brady hasn’t told them before draft day that he’s definitely committed to playing this year, they may feel they have no choice but to draft his successor.

  1. .
It would seem totally out of character for Brady to suddenly announce his retirement and leave Bob Kraft out to lunch.
    .

  2. It’s obvious Brady cannot stand Belichick but feels loyalty to Robert and Jonathan Kraft. He wants to train the way he wants and the Krafts will need to step in or they will have traded Garoppolo for nothing.

Brady has put his cards on the table and it’s really now Belichick’s move.

  3. Pats are likely to draft a QB in the first two rounds regardless of whether Brady keeps playing or not. It’ll be interesting to find out which prospect(s) Bellichek likes.

  4. Brady has more leverage than ever with Jimmy G gone. They are going to have to pay him to keep him happy because he can just hang retirement over their heads and they are held hostage.

I think Kraft will have to choose between a new Brady contract or BB contract. They clearly hate each other at this point and also speaks volumes that BB has no new contract by now with it set to expire after this

Right move or not Brady stays and plays another 2-3 years and BB gets the hell out of dodge after they made him trade Jimmy G.

It was a great dynasty while it lasted.

  5. Big surprise this comes from ESPN, the World Leader in Fake Sports News. I thought Schefter was better than that, but I guess I was wrong. He’s in competition with Chris Moronson, so I guess I should have expected him to start lying.

  6. All this conflict over a glorified masseuse Alex “Yoko” Guerrero.
Brady cried to Kraft about loyalty and forced Belichick’s hand vis-à-vis trading Jimmy Garappolo. If Brady then turned around and retired that would be a slap in the face to Robert Kraft. Brady will be back but he has become a self absorbed diva.

  7. Kraft and BB are calm and relaxed… more so than usual. Gronk has been at the stadium working out.

My gut says Gronk, Brady, BB and Kraft are all on the same page and they are all just screwing with everyone.

BB and Kraft probably told them to take the voluntary practices off. They don’t need the extra punishment on their bodies.

  8. I can’t imagine Brady not playing this year. There is no way they trade Jimmy G without a 100% commitment form Brady for 2018. No way he’d do that to the team. It makes no sense.

  9. Interesting photo up top

    Kraft: Great job tommy
    Brady: Kiss off, old man

They are actually said to have a really good relationship

  10. I think the players have finally had enough of Belichick and his military rule of the team. Yes they are successful and you cant discount that, but how many employees leave their jobs once financially secure because they no longer enjoy the environment? The Butler decision is coming back to haunt him as the players are well aware they most likely would have won the SB had they had their best DB in the game, he put in his work all season and got screwed. Players like Gronk and Brady already have their rings and are set financially, maybe they are contemplating enjoying life instead.

  11. This is a nonstory. Media outlets are creating something out of nothing because they need something else to lead them up to to the draft. The Patriots do need to draft a QB, but Tom will play next season.

  12. Nothing is being made up here. This is very real. All of the Belichick sycophants on the radio condemning Tom Brady somehow believe that Tom Brady is evil and this dynasty was driven by the coach and not Tom Brady. Belichick is a great coach but won ZERO as a HC before Brady and will win nothing after he goes. If Brady leaves, they won’t win 7 games.

  13. The report added Brady wants to play, but also wants to spend more time with his family and there are people around him who would rather see him retire.

BB wasn’t mad about Jimmy G. NE couldn’t keep him after extending Brady in Feb 2016.

  14. Cleveland should pick a QB at 1, then trade 4 for Brady to be the bridge QB. NE should take a qb at 4, then trade for Foles with their draft ammunition to be their bridge QB. Works for everyone!

Look at Brady’s contract after he was extended in Feb 2016. His agent isn’t a dummy. NE is on the hook for $14 million dead cap for Brady no matter what. $22 million if he plays. The only way they controlled Jimmy G was franchise tag him. His rookie contract expired after 2017 season. Great timing for Jimmy G, bad for NE.

  16. When was the last time Brady “confirmed” he was playing in the upcoming season to the media? He also skipped some voluntary workouts in ’08, ’09 and ’10. If this was the first time he did it, then maybe it would be a story.

    Easy peasy

This comment makes no sense. Since when was it being a “diva” to not make a formal announcement as to whether you are coming back or not?

  18. tom is one of the best Qb’s in NFL STILL..Thier loaded at Wr’s..the guy has at least another 2 yrs at a High level..Been watching Football for 41 yrs..He’s the best Qb I’ve ever seen.. Lifelong Bills fan….

Sorry, but it’s BRADY that keeps on requesting to be underpaid, not the Patriots management. Kind of helps to have a wife that has a net worth over $360m.

How has he been a diva? He hasn’t spoken at all, never makes excuses or blames anyone except “us” or mainly himself. He’s being the opposite of a drama queen, unlike some of his salty haters.

  21. Lol, i live just outside boston and there won’t be a Patriots shirt worn anywhere. Ultimate bandwagon fans.

  22. Schefter’s entire point seems to be avoiding directly asking Brady (or anybody who would actually know) for fear he’ll say “Of course I’m playing” and thus destroying this “scoop.”

    —————–

Tom Curran has sold out and now Schefter has sold out. It’s sick, really. But, when their bosses tell them to run a story that really isn’t a story, they are still forced to sell out and ditch their integrity.

  24. Gronk and Brady should retire or be traded. Playing the retirement card is the end. NE shouldn’t give them extensions but retool and move on. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, an old QB and a goof ball tight end. It’s all on the owner.

  25. Regards the common misconception Gisele still earns more than Tom:
    1) You’re comparing apples to oranges – Gisele’s total income vs Tom’s salary but not his total $.
    2) When you compare totals, in the earlier years together before Gisele devoted more time to motherhood, her income was often somewhat higher, but nowadays his is considerably higher.
    3) Forbes Celebrity Rich List toting up 2016’s incomes, puts Brady 54th and Gisele 99th.

  26. I am Patriots a fan (season ticket holder) , and to me this is just drama. Tom Brady will be the QB for Patriots next season, and probably the one after. IMO He is being a petulant child. He’s pissed about losing the SB and I imagine he is tired of BB and his ways. He wants his ass kissed right now. (maybe more money).

I will say this, if he retires this off season, he can pretty much kiss is legacy in New England goodbye. As mad as everyone was about the super bowl loss and BB’s coaching, this would be way worse, especially when he (*speculating*) forced the trade of Garrapolo to SF.

    Just saying

In case you have’t paying attention… It’s a QB driven league now.

It’s clearly obvious YOU haven’t been paying attention because it’s been a QB driven league for quite some time while the QB diva thing is new – as you say – this season.

    “Madden NFL 2019”

  29. More speculative garbage from BSPN. I hope Brady sues them for slander. They’ve been dragging his name through the mud with lies for nearly 2 decades now.

  30. They probably will draft a quarterback in the early rounds IF a good one is available. They won’t panic and pick a projected mid-round pick in the first round. That was what happened to Seattle. They used a first round pick to draft OL Germain Ifedi, who was a projected 2nd or 3rd round pick, and he has not played like a first rounder.

It is no secret that the Patriot players are puzzled and perhaps even angered by the decision to bench Malcolm Butler in the biggest game of the season for no good reason. They may need time to calm themselves down.

  31. that statement ‘has not committed’ will be true until he walks in the door of the pre season. This is a ‘stormy daniels is increasing her offers’ story

  32. In case nobody noticed, the Pat’s were 3/1 with Jimmy G/Brisset and are 15-6 without Brady. It doesn’t matter who the QB is, the system will make a 6th Rd nobody into a HOF QB.

  33. If Brady does decide to retire, the Pats would likely work out a trade for Nick Foles and continue on, business as usual. Foles contract states that if he is still with the Eagles next February he becomes a free agent, so Philly will be under the gun to get something for him (similar to what happened with the Pats and Jimmy G last October). If Philly does trade him, he has an extremely team friendly deal through 2021, around $6 million per year. Imagine what Evil Billy B could do with an extra $16 million in cap space???

  34. I think that Brady (and others) are still ticked off at Belichick for the Super Bowl fiasco. Maybe Butler could have been the difference. We will never know. It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make it all the way to that game, and to have your coach bench the one defensive guy that could have turned the game around, as he did against Seattle, because he’s a stubborn jerk would leave anyone feeling salty for a very long time. That may have been the last straw. We’ll see. Maybe playing for Belichick for 4 more years doesn’t seem so appealing anymore.

Let’s get Brissette back and get him to 1st ballot HOF status pronto…

  38. is tommy feeling hurt? i have brady retiring right up there with the sun not coming in the east tomorrow morning. first he basically packed jimmy g’s bags for him now he is flexing. why i’m sick of the patriots reason 172. i’ve know become a bill b fan because he is messing with tb12.

I don’t think a guy who did or was doing this is reflective of anyone who “could have turned the game around”

    1. Sulked all year
    2. Was “difficult” to “get ready” (mentally) for games all year (Likely source via Mike Giardi is Matt Patricia. The Lions had ZERO interest in Butler in FA.
    3. Had a season passer rating against of 103, one of the worst nickelback performances in the league. Jon Jones was likely ready to take over permanently, but he got hurt later in the year.
    4. Cleaned ou this locker after possibly faking the flu.
    5. Had a horrible AFC title game vs Jax.
    6. Blew up at coaches during SB week and pouted and was not in the gameplan much anyway.
    7. Was told before the game he wouldn’t be utilized much if at all and that they were not using much small nickel or dime, since Philly has bigger RBs and they need tackling inside the box.
    8. Had a mental breakdown during the national anthem, confirming the lack of trust that BB, PAtricia and apparently his defensive teammates had lost in him, which apparently had been a bubbling up problem all year.

Butler chose the path he chose. He rejected 8 mil per and thinks he’s a #1 Cb, which clearly he is not.

Butler’s ego skyrocketed past his value to the team and he selfishly made his contract situation a problem to the point it affected his performance and now has created ridiculous drama for bozo fans to think his presence somehow meant a SB win.

    Beyond laughable at this point.

Philly plaayed a near flawless game on offense, Foles threw seeds, and they never took their foot off the gas, even if aided by 2 fraudulent TDs that were not TDs.

They went 11-5 when Brady was out injured for the season.

  41. He was at the facility in the off season working out. He’s a team player. He lives next to Kraft in a home he built recently. The Pats Traded Garoppolo based on Brady’s desire to continue playing.

Please just stop with unsubstantiated conjecture.

  42. 505 yards and 3 touchdowns and he lost the Super Bowl… proved once and for all Tom made Bill not the other way around enjoy your pre Brady coaching abilities Bill

  43. It’s looking more and more like the Patriots traded the wrong QB. Guaranteed the 49ers are not wondering if their QB is contemplating retirement. SMH.

  44. Now it makes a ton of sense why they offered AJ Mcarron a contract in the event this would happen and it would prevent them from possibly starting a rookie. Wow, this news about him possibly not playing this year couldn’t come at a worse time as it exposes a major draft need.

  45. I doubt it’s true. But I will play along for a minute. Since we have nothing else to talk about for another 7 days at the draft.

What if he pulled this crap and threatened to retire because he wanted BB to leave and McDaniels to be head coach.

What if the Krafts finally came to their senses and said, “what did we do in trading Jimmy G?”

What would be better is if Kraft told Belichick to trade Brady for a 1st round pick and a solid NFL QB that McDaniels and BB could work with.

    That would be epic.

  46. I pray that the Patriots never come back down to earth, because if they do, there are going to be a lot of people with a lot of free time on their hands. Click revenues will bottom out as well.

Who is “two yard”? Brady was second in NFL in YPA in ’16 and was 5th this past year, and was 7th this past year in pass attempts over 20yds.

  52. Perhaps Brady, like Sanders although not to the same extent, has had enough of carrying the entire team on his shoulders.

The Pats’ D has sucked for a decade. They’ve rarely had a ringer RB and their WR are all cheapie “Patriot Way” WRs.

Gronk was a fortuitous 2nd-round pick in 2010 and was drafted behind McCourty on the Pats and behind players like CJ Spiller, Tim Tebow, and immediately behind Torrell Troup on the Bills. He was drafted after lackluster Gresham as the 2nd TE taken and behind nothing WRs the likes of Dexter McCluster and Arrelious “Who’s He” Benn. Gronk’s been Brady’s only consistent receiving target and he’s not been very consistent due to injuries.

Visit profootball reference site. Brady has started 251 games out of a total of the 288 games he’s been on the team. 18 seasons x 16 games is 288 games. Pats were 5-13 with Bledsoe starting, 10-5 with Cassel starting, 3-1 with JimmyG/ Brisset starting. That is 37 games.
