Should Browns play it safe or go for broke?

As the draft approaches, most observers have narrowed Cleveland’s potential selections with the first overall pick down to two players: Josh Allen or Sam Darnold.

As Peter King of SI.com explained it in making Darnold the projected pick, the Browns need to play it safe after blowing it so many times regarding the most important position on the field. Allen is the boom or bust candidate; Darnold is the between the buoys selection.

Whatever the Browns plan to do, they’re saying nothing. And that’s one of the benefits of having the first overall pick. If the Browns can’t fascinate football fans by what they do on the field, they can titillate when it comes to what they’ll do at No. 1.

By all appearances, it’s Dorsey’s call. But if owner Jimmy Haslam and/or the homeless guy who counsels Haslam catches a wild hair between now and Thursday, maybe Dorsey’s decision will be influenced by what the guy who owns the team wants.

Haslam, of course, should let Dorsey make the decision. And if Haslam begins to get the itch to chime in (he surely loves Baker Mayfield, for the same reasons Haslam loved Johnny Manziel), Haslam should resist scratching.

Until then, we’ll all be scratching our noggins as we try to figure out what the Browns will do.

  1. They should skip the QB all together with both picks. Take Saquon Barkley #1, and Bradley Chubb #4. Get two players who can contribute now, rather than a project QB who’ll sit the bench for at least a year. Tyrod Taylor is their QB going forward. Stick with a proven winner!

  2. If I’m Cleveland, I take Barkley first and whatever QB is left at four. I don’t see a huge difference. Or then try to trade from four to two with the Giants.

  3. Josh Allen was a mediocre college QB in the Mountain West conference. I don’t understand the hype with him. Cleveland had Josh Allen on their roster last year, his name was Deshone Kizer. Big, athletic, rocket arm, didn’t win in college and just not a good QB.

Darnold or Rosen are the pick at 1. Allen would be an all time bust.

  4. They should go for broke and take the 2 most explosive players in the draft – Barkley and Lamar Jackson. The upside would be ridiculous. Then use one of their 2nd round picks and take another QB as insurance. Why not? They can’t get worse.

  5. “By all appearances, it’s Dorsey’s call. But if owner Jimmy Haslam and/or the homeless guy who counsels Haslam catches a wild hair between now and Thursday, maybe Dorsey’s decision will be influenced by what the guy who owns the team wants.”

Quick, someone lock up Haslem in a secure location so that doesn’t happen.

  6. What if this draft is like many others and you can’t find 10 players top 2 rounds that became good to great players? Browns should trade their whole draft for Russell Wilson.

  7. It will be a QB at # 1. That is a given. With all the reading I’ve done, and there’s been way too much, I am good with Darnold, Rosen, and Mayfield. Nobody else. Of course, I’m not a GM with a pro front office and scouts to help me choose.

It cracks me up when fans & media talking-heads suggest any GM in their right mind will have a multiple-way tie between QBs and go with one of the guys that’s ‘left over” with our 4th pick.

  8. Does not matter what they do ,they will screw it up and get to try it again next year and the next year . Mistake by the Lake .

  9. Doesn’t matter how many times you give the Browns 2 first rounders, they’ll still find a way to turn them into Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert etc..

  10. If I am the Browns I take either Mayfield or Allen. We’ve seen far too many USC QBs prove they are not worth it. They look good in college because they are surrounded by USC talent. And, Darnold is turnover prone. If he is turning it over like crazy in college then imagine the pros!

  11. What if this draft is like many others and you can’t find 10 players top 2 rounds that became good to great players? Browns should trade their whole draft for Russell Wilson.

Not sure what sport you watch but there’s not many drafts where there are t 10 good players in the first 2 rounds.

  12. That picture is great. I can just imagine it.
Haslam: Here is who I think you should draft first.
Dorsey: What? You picked Manziel and now you have the audacity to tell me who to draft?

  13. Barkley is far from a guaranteed thing. Much more likely he turns into Richardson than anything. Ppl talk about how Allen was mediocre against mediocre talent. Look at all those sub 100 yard games Barkley had in the same light.

Take the QB you want not named Allen or Mayfield and then Chubb.

As someone hoping my team drafts a QB, I fully support this plan! If I were a Browns fan, I’d hate it…but I’m not so have at it.

  15. If they truly can’t decide, then they should not take a QB at #1, and possibly get rid of their scouts/FO for someone that knows talent. They could take someone else at #1 and pick from the leftover QBs at #4. But, I don’t think they should wait longer than that.

If you want a potentially really good QB, they should take one early. Dropping down to take one later in the first or in the second round has not worked for them, while guys they bypassed near the top of the draft worked out elsewhere. Passing on Mahomes and Watson doesn’t necessarily look smart now, and passing on the chance for Wentz in 2016 looks horrible.

  16. Rosen is a bust and a locker room distraction
take the RB#1 and Josh Allen #4 – groom Allen for two years watch this guy air it out while drafting and signing FA OL

  17. They should go George Costanza, and do the opposite of what they would normally do. Success guaranteed.

  18. Dorsey will take Chubb at #1 to have bookend monsters on his defensive line. Jackson will be their next choice for an explosive QB who is three times the athlete as their current starting QB on the roster.

Dorsey knows football players. He’s just not very adept with managing salaries nor the cap.

  19. Rosen is out because of what Mora said about him. Mayfield is out because he’s so similar to Manziel. Allen is out because of his low completion %. So Darnold is the safe pick at # 1. I think Jackson has the most upside but is not worthy of a #1 pick. Take a non QB best player available at #1 & #4 then trade up and get Jackson later.

  20. ANYBODY but Bo Callahan.

Skip the qb’s, bolster the line – both lines. A wise old man once said that games are won or lost up front.

If Ray Jennings is available after take him – Cleveland royalty.

This is your chance Sonny – don’t blow it.
