Report: Bryan Bulaga refused Packers’ request to take a pay cut

Getty Images

Last month Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga said he hadn’t heard anything from the team about wanting him to take a pay cut. It appears that has changed.

Longtime Packers reporter Bob McGinn reports that the Packers attempted to get Bulaga to take a pay cut, but Bulaga and his agents refused and no progress was made on any talks.

Bulaga is set to count $7.9 million against the Packers’ salary cap this year, and he missed most of last season with an ankle injury and a torn ACL. So it’s no surprise that the Packers would love to lower that cap number.

But for now it appears that Bulaga, who has two years left on his deal, won’t play ball. We’ll see whether anything changes if the Packers draft a potential successor to Bulaga tonight.

  1. Cap hell is very real..Why would you ask on the best LTs in the league to take an outright cut when he’s not technically overpaid?

The dude is at 6 million the next 2 years which is a bargain. The Giants are paying NAte Solder TWICE that amount to be in their cap hell in NY.

Vikings could use some O-Line depth.
    \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

This guy wouldn’t even make the Vikings as a water boy….

  3. There are several teams that would pay him $8M

    Jets
    Pats
    Bengals
    Raidahs
    Bears
    Cards
    Bucs

  4. @tylawspick6. Bulaga is their “right” tackle and no where near one of the best in the league. Bakhtiari is their left tackle and definitely worth every penny.

  5. Well, Tylawspick6, hes actually a RT not a LT.Plus you could have the best player in the league but if hes never on the field hes of no use.

  6. McGinn is no longer a Packers insider. I’m not sure which side leaked this story to him to try to make the other side look bad, but Bulaga will probably play this season. May get cut after that, depending on the GB draft haul.

  7. Too bad baseball can’t do this to its players. ‘Hey Felix and Robbie Cano……you aren’t worth 25-30 million a year. Lets shave off 50% and all go have drinks.’

  8. Why would you ask on the best LTs in the league to take an outright cut when he’s not technically overpaid?

    He’s a right tackle.

Probably because Bulaga isn’t a LT? Also he has injury issues. On a per game basis, he’s over paid.

Im pretty sure they didnt ask Bakhtiari to take a pay cut.

As for Vikings O-line… a water boy would be an upgrade.

    1. He’s a right tackle. 2. This is coming from Bob McGinn.

Bulaga isn’t one of the best left tackles. Considering HE ISN’T EVEN A LT!

Stick to what you know; Patriots cheating scandals.

Everytime you venture elsewhere, you show what you know……..

  13. Won’t be surprised if the Packers are targeting Quentin Nelson or Mike McGlinchy with this coming out.

Bulaga has missed nearly 3 full seasons worth of games in his 8 year career.

Doubt they’ll cut him loose this year, but I won’t be surprised if he isn’t on the roster in ’19.

  14. First off he is a right tackle and not a left tackle……when healthy ( has only finished one complete season in career) he is a good right tackle….if they draft a tackle in the first 4 rounds he could be history.

  15. Pay attention Iggles… this is the path you’re heading after you pay Carlson Wince as if he won you a Superbowl…no more money to attract…or keep your own talent…but hey you’d rather have fun winning one Superbowl instead of several so…..

  16. Trying to force himself out of Cheeseland…can’t blame him…Meanwhile several Vikings have restructured or taken a pay cut to stay with a World Class organization…

  17. What is not mentioned is more important, Bulaga will likely not play for the first half of the 2108 season. Secondly, he has had two major injuries in the last 4 years so It’s not as if he is even available. I can see both sides though, he doesn’t have a lot of high income years left so he has to make it while he can. The Packers, on the other hand, want to make their salary cap work for them, they can’t afford to squander it.

  18. I bet $7.9M/yr is less than the going rate for starting healthy NFL RTs — it appears the issue with Bulaga isn’t as much his talent (or his T-Rex arms) as it is health.

Laughable. The guy is easily a top flight Tackle, especially at that money.

    He can play either side.

What morons up in GB, asking a fairly paid Tackle to take a paycut for no reason.

Ted Thompson is out of a job for a reason, Erin.

  21. Seahawks paid washed up Luke Joekel 8 million last season to play guard half the season and have surgery to ‘clean things up’ during the other half. He hasn’t even been signed yet for 2018. Packers must not really want Bulaga if they are nickel and diming that amount.

  22. Here we are folks, Vikings win the championship every year at this time.
The rest of the season, not so much. Think about how much money you save by NOT needing a trophy case!

  23. “Pay attention Iggles” ?? Having to pay “Carson Wince” like he won the Superbowl?

First off they won the SuperBowl BECAUSE Cason WENTZ! His MVP play all season got them the #1 seed and home field. The Birds wouldn’t have gotten to the Big Show playing on the road.

As for paying Wentz, Jason Peters and his 11 million cap hit is gone next year. So will will a couple others. Howie Roseman is the original cap guy. Best in the league at finding money..Stick to hater name calling on Carson Wentz as his is now a top 5 QB in the league and climbing.

  24. Laughable. The guy is easily a top flight Tackle, especially at that money.

    Laughable.. describing your suggestions?

He hasn’t started a game at left tackle in over 5 years.

He can play the left side at this point… at GUARD…

  25. It looks like the Packers need to clear cap space to accommodate the diva princess.

Bulga is the perfect Packer and even he refuses to take less money to be forced to live on Green Bay.

    Go Bulga Go!

Cut him! I’ll take him on the Vikings at 7.9M

    //////////////////////

Hurt too much, stay away from the Vikings.

  27. Philly fans are building up their QB just like Raven fans did with “jump ball Joe” after they won a SB. Paid Joe big, ever since, nothing. Pump the breaks before spending big time or you end up like the Ravens.

  28. The Cheese Curls need every penny they can get to pay Rodgers the 30 mil per yr and 90 mil guaranteed he’ll demand. Hometown discount and Aaron Rodgers is an oxymoron.

  29. Can anyone explain why the Packers have so much cap trouble when Aaron Rodgers is underpaid and they don’t really have any other talent on the team?
    =====

They don’t have ‘cap trouble’. They haven’t had cap trouble problems since Ted nuked Mike Shermans team in 2006.

This isn’t related to cap problems. This is related to a player with availability problems being overpaid.

  30. at least its good to see that vikings fans are over their devastating loss and back to hating on a team that has actually won some championships. Stay classy MN

He’s a right tackle firstly and oft injured. It’s within the rights of the club to ask.

  32. Howie Roseman is the original cap guy.
    =====

I’m not about to criticize the job he’s done over the years. They’ve been competitive almost every year this century.

But the original cap guy? No! The cap predates his career considerably. And men like Mike Reinfeldt, Andrew Brandt and Russ Ball have done it every bit as well as Roseman has.

.. I don’t know who the Pats and Steelers cap guy is, nor do I care, but they are right there as well.

Baseball could do something better. Hey dumb GM, no 25 mil deals for guys anymore. Get good ball players at reasonable rates…..

yes, horrible management, for the 2018 year they have over $55 million in dead cap space to guys not even on the team!!!!

  35. Jason Spriggs time.
    =====

    Ugh!

    That make me nervous.

He seemed to play fairly well down the stretch last year, but he was pretty awful prior to that.

So you just want the revenue to go into the owners pockets?

Men that are already absurdly rich, and have more money than they can spend in dozens of lifetimes?

Or are you under the impression that lower player salaries will reduce the cost of going to games???….

  37. Bulaga is fine where he is at. He would never work for any club that has had 4 humiliating super bowl losses, and who choked in Philly last season. I’m pretty certain he would head home to the Iowa cornfields before even considering it. Most players would do the same.

  38. I guarantee you he will be cut after June 1st. I can’t see him being ready from ACL surgery until November. He’s Done as a Packer. Thanks for your contributions Bryan but this is a business and your contract doesn’t match up with being off the field as much as you have been.

  39. As much as I like the guy, I’m afraid the severity of the injuries Bulaga has had will end his career in Green Bay. Just not in June unless there is an injury settlement involved. Hate to see this.

  40. This guy is a flood damaged Mercedes. Sure, it runs……….but no better than a beat up twelve year old Chevy.
