Ben wonders which of his backups will get fired

From time to time, Ben Roethlisberger makes news when doing interviews on Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan. And it’s the kind of news that often makes us wonder why he continues to do it.

They pay him for the segments, that’s obvious. But they’re can’t be paying a $20-million-per-year guy enough to justify the problems that often arise from the answers he provides in a setting where he is far more relaxed, casual, and loquacious than when he’s at a press conference or standing with a bunch of microphones in his face in the locker room.

The biggest and most obvious headline coming from Friday’s visit by Roethlisberger to 93.7 The Fan arose from his comments about his reaction to the team’s decision to burn a 2018 third-round pick on a quarterback. Near the end of the 20-minute interview, the issue comes up again from the perspective of the team’s 2017 fourth-round quarterback.

Here was the question: “How about Josh Dobbs? A guy that gets picked last year as a fourth-rounder, now he might feel like he’s getting squeezed out or he’s the odd man out. Have you talked to him about his situation now with this team?”

Said Roethlisberger, who interjected a “yeah, I know” as the question was being asked: “[Dobbs] and Landry [Jones] were the two guys I’ve spoken to the most. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t worried about someone taking my job. I feel confident that I can go out and beat whoever I need to beat out for my job, that’s just the confidence I have in myself. And I just got back to those guys. . . . I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I assume Landry’s still the [No.] 2. I don’t really know. And Josh, same thing, last year he was taken in the fourth round. So does that mean the like Steelers screwed up in that pick? Like, do they think he wasn’t the one that they thought? Or has he not developed the way they thought? Why else would you take a quarterback in the third round the next year?”

The host interjected at that point, saying that G.M. Kevin Colbert said Thursday that he won’t keep four quarterbacks on the 2018 53-man roster.

“So did they screw up the pick?” Roethlisberger said. “Or was he not as good as they thought? I don’t know, and I feel bad, because Josh puts a lot of work in.”

Then Ben brings the arrival of rookie Mason Rudolph back to himself, with a comment that likely was more joke than serious remark. But he still said it out loud.

“I wouldn’t think they’d get rid of Mason, keep Dobbs and Landry,” Roethlisberger said. “I wouldn’t think. Maybe they’re trying to trade me away or something, I don’t know.”

He laughed as he said it. The Steelers likely weren’t laughing very much when they listened to the full interview, because it’s clear that there will now be plenty of tension in the quarterback room, and that the guy who has led the depth chart since entering the fray as a rookie in 2004 won’t be bashful about stirring things up, publicly and presumably privately.

  1. Little Ben should have never said anything. Doesn’t he remember his own words after every season? Like Prince Hamlet-“To be or not to be”….Big Ben -“to retire or not retire, that is the question.”

  2. My guess is that Landry Jones will be the odd man out. If he is not cut then last year’s rookie 4th round pick (what is his name again?) will be cut, unless the QB they drafted this season really stinks. It will be a cold day in Hawaii before they trade Big Ben.

  3. Clearly Mason being drafted is bothering him because he won’t shut up about it. When you waffle every season about retirement, your team is going to be proactive about the future to avoid being left in the lurch. Speaking as a Packers fan, I’ve seen this all play out before, and it didn’t work out too well for the incumbent.

  4. It’s kinda screwed up that he aired it out there like that, but there is a lot of truth in what he’s saying. Steelers know that as well. I’d don’t care one way or the other about Ben or the Steelers, but I can recognize that Rothlisberger is not getting traded or beat out. The other back ups are not as good as Mason Rudolph in my opinion. At the end of the day, unless Rudolph isint as good as I or the Steelers think he is, one of those back ups is gone. I’m thinking those guys didn’t want Ben putting their bidnezz out on front street either.

  5. Ben wonders which of his backups will get fired-HOPEFULLY IT’S BEN, HE’S BEEN WHINING ABOUT LEAVING ANYWAY. ARE THERE ANY MORE CLASSY MEN AROUND WHO CAN JUST KEEP THEIR MOUTH SHUT AND PLAY?!?!

  6. Landry Jones is a backup QB, and Dobbs is trying to develop into one. Mason Rudolph is a top starting QB, who was somehow overlooked, and slipped to the third round. It happens. Either Big Ben has a couple pops before he goes on the air, or he’s just a little different. He’ll probably be a good TV guy after he retires. Reminds me of Charles Barkley. Barkley used to stay in the news every year with hints of an early retirement (which never happened), then after he retired, he was always hinting around at a comeback (which never happened). I’ll bet that radio station gets good ratings when Big Ben comes on.

  7. Landry Jones is not the answer.

Josh Dobbs was not being discussed as a 1st round pick last year, Rudolf was.

Since everyone calls it the ‘Not for long league’ since when does Ben all of a sudden act like a Den Mother? If you don’t make the team and someone else is better, your team is better. Logical progression, or attempt at it, anyway.

He’s obviously making the QB room uncomfortable on purpose for whatever personal reasons he does everything.

  8. “Mason Rudolph is a top starting QB, who was somehow overlooked, and slipped to the third round”

    Riiiiiiiight.

  9. Big Ben’s a bit of a winger and cry baby, loves to make a fuss, but he does have something of a point in this instance

  10. Maybe they had Rudolph rated much higher than his draft position and were so surprised he was still there they simply couldn’t pass him up. Given Bernita’s retirement dance they would be stupid not draft him. Bernita’s probably worried that Rudolph may actually pose a threat to his job in a year or two while the others never will.

  11. Don’t forget the 2nd round pick is quite familiar with the 3rd round pick. So Ben is doing more than irritating people. He’s building a nice enemy base.

My ancestors go back to the 1700’s in Pittsburgh and this is the guy that turned me off to the Steelers. While growing up in NY, I became a Giant fan but still love the Pirates and rooted for the Steelers. He is who I wanted with the 4th pick in 2004. Eli had is one Diva moment (created by Dad). Ben just keeps ticking.

  12. Just amazing. Ben Roethlisberger is having a full-blown melt-down that the Steelers drafted his likely replacement–even if they might not plan for him to take over for a few years.

He is that insecure? He didn’t freak out about Josh Dobbs–is that because he is worried Rudolph is good enough to be a threat?

Mentally Ben Roethlisberger is not where he needs to be and hasn’t been in a long time–he can still put up big numbers but he also can have some awful games on the road. And still sucks vs Patriots and the teams he usually needs to beat.

Steelers should really plan for him to move on once his contract is up–if not sooner. He might still have a lot of ability at times, but I would have serious doubts about his commitment and focus.

IF Tom Brady was mad about Patriots taking Jimmy G or another QB, at least he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut about it.

  13. Just for fun, I wish one of Belichick’s guys would publicly wonder if he botched the draft.

  14. Ben is quickly becoming the most annoying player in the NFL. He couldn’t care less about his back-ups, he’s pissed they drafted his replacement so he can’t hokd them hostage every year until he finally hangs it up.

  15. Mason in round 3.

Trying to think of a single decent starting QB in the last 15 years taken in round 3…

Ben, Wentz, Brees, Ryan, Rodgers, D. Watson, Goff, Alex Smith, Eli, Rivers, Luck, Cam, Stafford…

There’s truth that if you’re looking for a possible replacement, use a 1st rounder or quit wasting mid Rd. picks.

For every Cousins, Dak, or Wilson, there are literally 100 Dobbs, Connor Cooks, Bryce Petty, and Cordarel Jones’. And you roll those odds 2 years in a row? Ok.

  16. Later when asked why he and his team can’t seem to beat the Patriots Ben simply muttered something incoherent and took another bite of his cream-filled pasty

  17. He talks a big game until he gets a hangnail and then it’s 4-6 weeks of walking boot.

Oh, but the Steelers did beat the patriots, they just forgot to game plan against the refs.

  19. For sure, I am sick of his mouth. If they could get an All Pro linebacker and a high
draft pick, it would sure please me. BTW, I saw Bobby Layne play with the Steelers and knew he had lots of playing during the week, like getting acquainted with a streetcar.

  20. .
Two things about the Steelers drafting:

    1. They rarely trade

    2. They generally follow the “best player available” philosophy. Most likely they just chose the highest ranked undrafted guy on their board and his name happened to be Randolph.
    .

  21. Doesn’t it just stink for the competition when you have a franchise QB that takes your team into the playoffs year after year with poor coaching? Must be tough on all of you Big Ben haters, eh? Well it’s off to Canton for Ben in a few years so perhaps all you dweebs out there who’s teams never win anything can look forward to not seeing the black & gold every other Sunday on national TV. Just another championship year in store for the Steelers……sorry turkeys!

  22. When is he going to get smart and have no comment? The more he talks the stupider he sounds.

  23. LOL, there is zero, zilch, absolutely no tension in the locker romm. No matter how much you want it to be so. This is just Ben being Ben..

    ——–

Spoken like a true Steeler fan. Sounds just like the players…..LOL!

  25. Ben does a nice job playing the media and exposing their hypocrisy. Why not just give them what their hoping for and watch them lose their minds. LOL

If he said nothing, they would have made this up anyway. The whole Steelers organization is laughing at all of them.

  26. What a jerk, every year you talk about retiring, they draft your replacement and all you want to do is whine about it and suddenly you’re gonna play 5 more years. Just shut up

  27. As a ravens fan I hate Pig Ben. What I find funny is all the squealers fans who are ready to see him go. dumbest fanbase in sports. The requirement to be a Pitt fan, wave a towel, count to six and sing styx songs.

  28. The Steelers can go one and done in a home playoff game against the Jags just as easily with Mason Rudolph. Actually Rudolph would probably not throw a 1st quarter pick at his own 18 (the Jags scored on the next play) and then hand the Jags ANOTHER score with a strip sack returned for a touchdown. Counting starters and backups there are probably 40 quarterbacks in the NFL who would not poop the bed that badly. Small Ben in Big Games will not be missed.

  29. I dont care about this guy either way but what did he say that was wrong?Obviously somebody has to go and the question he asked is a legitimate one.when did it become a bad thing to state the truth?

  30. Hey look….it’s jealous jamal yall…requirements to be a Ratbirds fan…keep up with the bungles, envy the Steelers, and scream “Flacco is elite!” For 4 or 5 years while literally every NFL fan laughs at your ignorance. Wait until your team drafts joey’s replacement before getting real and admitting fluke-o is trash. Obsess over the franchise your team tried poorly to emulate and troll every article about them. And nvr miss a chance to look stupid and petty. Well…jam is def a ratbird, she checks all the boxes.

  31. It seems that Ben has forgotten that he was
once drafted to take someone’s job. I hope you stink it up to the point when someone goes in for you and you never see the field again!
    Arrogant Turd!!

  32. This guy is like the dude that strings a girl along for years, and even cheats on her, then gets really insecure when someone else shows her attention.

  33. Bye bye Dobbs – he was bad last year in preseason and nothing more than a decent passer – accuracy issues, questionable arm strength are his main traits.

  35. Long term, they want Rudolph to be the guy. But this pick puts Jones on notice. He has been disappointing, and the only team he can beat is Cleveland.

So if it goes the way they want:
    2018-Big Ben, Dobbs, Rudolph
    2019-Rudolph, Dobbs, 2019 4th rd pick.

  36. With the success the Steeler organization has had, I doubt that they made a mistake in drafting a QB. Laundry Jones sucks and is definitely not the long term answer. Baby Ben is being an ass clown. I’m sure he’ll be the starter this year but he needs to shut the hell up and play some TEAM ball.

  37. @nflfan22

I see you have Rothlisberger’s 22 , as in 22 qbr rating he had for a super bowl in your tag

  38. Big Ben sure does have a lot of nerve. I have always considered him elite, but he has both the best RB and WR in the game, and what has he done with them? Tom Brady wins titles throwing the ball to chumps.

  39. If anyone watched Dobbs in college they should have the answer. Never understood what all the fuss was about this guy. Smart as all get out? You bet. Decent NFL quarterback. Don’t think so.

I don’t remember that Steelers fans in the 70s being so whiny

  41. Rudolph was drafted in the third round, that’s good value at that point in the draft for a guy with a higher grade. Ben didn’t complain when Jones and Dobbs were drafted in the fourth round, but now he complaines

  42. He whined about retiring trying to leverage a new contract. Let’s get that straight first. Now he’s mad they called his bluff and drafted QBs in back to back drafts. So now the little passive aggressive diva is trying to sow division amongst his backups to keep them from developing fast enough to replace him in 2-3 years. Instead of broaching his contract situation like Rodgers did he moped and complained about how he was going to retire. He should have just come out and said he wanted more money, but that would have taken away from the “Big Ben” myth. He really should watch himself because the Steelers usually draft and develop players well. He might be playing with his replacement.

  43. I don’t remember that Steelers fans in the 70s being so whiny

That’s ok I don’t remember the Pats having any fans in the 70’s and you are far too young to know. However should you be old enough to remember then you are far too old to be such an obsessive troll. Grow up your constant trash talking is very immature.

  44. Weird that people are so upset/critical of him talking. I’d love to hear more of what athletes really think about new guys coming in and how it affects their team and close relationships. Rare to actually get any true insight from players post draft.

  45. Just love the media. Here is a tough qb, plays through pain, is honest, saying surprised about a pick on qb at 3 round, wants to win now while he has Bell, concerned about his backup jobs, says a few things humorously, has gone to 3 Super Bowls, yet gets attacked again. Dude has just had lived clean life over last decade, great Dad, lives Hid and his family. He can’t win.

  46. Anyone else feel like these stories are just trying to stir the pot? Reading the words on a page is different than hearing Ben talk about it on the radio. He seemed to be stickiing up for his teammates, which any teammate should do.

But the way this story presents it, when you read his words, it sounds like it’s Ben who is trying to create the drama and rip the organization.

Yeah because Edmonds and Conner were the best players available this year and last? If so, their draft board was made by a first grader.

  49. Only a complete jerk would wonder aloud to the media who is going to lose his job. If HE was the guy to get cut,he would probably bawl like a baby, which he is. I can’t think of any other starting QB who would say the things he does. Horrible teammate…

  50. Not sure who’s whinier Big Ben or 90% of the Pats fans that post on here

  51. I hate the Steelers, but he’s right…That third rounder could have been a great TE, WR, DE, or a pretty good O-lineman, LB, CB. They must have had a high grade on that QB; Who, even if he is replacing another guy, is not playing this year.

  52. pats were cheated in the super bowl with rules ignored to give philly 2 tds.

The rules the rule remember. It wasn’t ignored, they lost. If I’m supposed to be whiny about the Steelers who should of beat the patsies, what does this make pat fans? Exactly!

Do you remember the present pats fans being so whiny they lost to the eagles in the superbowl? I do. Look above!

  54. I heard Ben tore his ACL walking thru the parking lot to the interview. It was fully healed by the time he left. Drama and selfishness are running rampant thru Pittsburgh. Hard to believe when they have such an outstanding leader in Ol Trip.

6 months later and still whining! I’m guessing the ref’s also cost you those couple of games vs Jacksonville?

  56. Ben’s backups will be fired? I don’t know Ben, seems like the target is on your back. You’ve dragged this team through the mud long enough and now you’re leading the only team that got a playoff bye but totally blew it in front all all those obnoxious fans? If any heads roll, it’ll be yours.
