NFL has no issue with David Tepper’s casino holdings

The prospective owner of the Carolina Panthers owns a company that holds ownership interest in casino stock. That won’t keep David Tepper from owning the team.

Via Carleton English and John Kosman of the New York Post, the league has no issue with Tepper’s company, Appaloosa Management, holding ownership interests in Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International, and Boyd Gaming.

“This was vetted to the satisfaction of ownership and was not an issue in 2009 when Mr. Tepper became a minority owner of the Steelers,” a league spokesperson told the Post.

Currently, owners can hold investments in casinos, as long as they don’t participate in the operation of them. That rule, and every other NFL rule regarding gambling, will need to be revisited given that the U.S. Supreme Court has opened the door to legalized gambling. Once teams are benefitted directly and indirectly from wagers on games, the traditional do’s and don’ts regarding gambling will need to be gutted.

  1. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we? A $10 bet kept Paul Hornung and Alex Karras out of the HOF for 40 years. Now owners own casino’s. Will players be allowed to bet on games? How will you stop them? Vegas will have an NHL and NFL team right in town. Can you bet on Them? You couldn’t bet on UNLV back in the day. What now?

  2. Wasn’t it just a few years ago that the NFL put the kaibosh on Tony Romo having some sort of card convention or fantasy football thing at a casino? And Tepper has been involved with the Steelers since ’09, huh?

With all the sanctimonious pearl-clutching that sports leagues, pundits and the media have done about the corrupting evils of gambling for many decades this is surprising. Shocking that there’s blatant hypocrisy in something the NFL does, I know.

I’m sure they’re looking the other way because the guy has the money and he’s not a financial risk. But would they allow players or coaches to have stock in casinos? To say that the owner of team can’t have an impact on the outcome of a game is, of course, ridiculous.

  3. As long as Romo cant have a fantasy football convention in the casino that Tepper has stock, the NFL maintains integrity.

  4. did steph curry get a share? because the way the warriors got embarrassed by the rockets hes going to be retired in no time anyway

  5. “We’ve been very happy with the used automobile which Mr. David Tepper sold us, and would not hesitate to do business with him again. David was very thorough and accommodating in considering all our needs at the time of purchase”.
