Vikings hope to extend Barr, Diggs, Hunter

Getty Images

Before the Vikings splurged on quarterback Kirk Cousins, coach Mike Zimmer spent time pushing back against the kind of cap-busting move that would make it hard to keep the team’s young core players in place. The Vikings apparently will be trying to do both.

With Cousins signed and linebacker Eric Kendricks extended, the Vikings have three other young stars they hope to keep in the fold: linebacker Anthony Barr, receiver Stefon Diggs, and defensive end Danielle Hunter.

Beyond Kendricks, the Vikings already have extended defensive end Everson Griffen, cornerback Xavier Rhodes, defensive tackle Linval Joseph, and receiver Adam Thielen. Executive V.P. of football operations Rob Brzezinski has been negotiating the deals for more than 20 years, and he’ll be trying to continue to keep the current team together.

“I would be lying if I said you don’t feel some pressure, because you want to be able to keep this team together and keep all your best players,” Brzezinski recently told Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

G.M. Rick Spielman realizes that the Vikings may not be able to accomplish the effort to extend Barr, Diggs, and Hunter.

“We’re still going to try,” Spielman said. “Is it going to be easy? No.”

One thing they won’t have to worry about is ownership; Spielman said that the Wilfs have never refused a request from the front office to sign a given player.

Brezinzki calls the situation a “good problem to have,” but it remains to be seen whether this approach solves the problem that the Vikings have been plagued with for more than 40 years: Getting back to the Super Bowl, and perhaps this time winning it.

  1. There’s three you want to keep, which often means two leave. I’d keep Barr and Hunter over Diggs, but he who recently said it’ll all work out. Vikes have a ton of exciting WR and TE prospects on the roster. Cousins could restructure next year. Best front office in the NFL will figure it out.

  2. These guys never should have paid Kirk “I can’t beat a team with a winning record” Cousins a boat load of cash. Vikings fans will have buyers’ remorse by Halloween

  3. If anyone can do it, it’s Brzezinski. The guy is a genius when it comes to the salary cap. Not to mention that they all want to stay in Minnesota.

  4. The Vikings could end up signing all 3 and still not win a Superbowl. Count me skeptical that Cousins can do anything except cash his very large paychecks.

No he isn’t he takes a shower every day…
When are these Packer Trolls going to get over that legal hit on Rodgers last year SHEESH!!!

  6. All that money for cousins and now cap hell. You can’t sign them. No super bowl for you. Unlike the Eagles and howie the master.

  7. If they get to a point where it looks like they won’t get all three signed, expect them to trade one of them for a high draft pick. Hopefully that won’t happen.

  8. Minnesota will give those guys an offer that is loaded on the back side, I think Diggs is the player that would hurt the worse to lose. Barr misses too many tackles, is out of position, and Hunter would not be an Earth shaking loss. Minnesota has the players signed and should be able to fill those spots except for Diggs from within and in the Draft..

  9. Get ready for this squad to take a large step backwards this year. Barr is as overrated as anyone. Go ahead…extend away. Why dont u just do it all gaunteed money too since that is the viking way.

  10. Diggs is very, very good. Really good hands, gets open, gets first downs, jumps and catches at his highest point. Smart and a great teammate. Missed a few games each of the last two years with injuries though. About his only drawback. Teams will want him badly.

HAHAHA, just wait, Rodgers is going to demand 35 mil, but Packers aren’t going ANYWHERE until he can prove he is still a viable starting QB. Annalists call it Packers dragging feet, but Erin is just a Sam Bradford in Green and Yellow…. yup how does this feel, being on the receiving end? Sorry but it is true…

  21. Diggs is the priority. He’s special. He’s going to be expensive. I’d be shocked if he isn’t signed before the end of 2018.

Barr provides good continutiy and is still one of the most athletic linebackers in the game. He would have to accept a deal similar to Kendricks. His cap number this year is insane.

Hunter is the biggest question mark. If he has a great year, he is gone. The vikings will not be able to afford him. If he has a modest year, they might be able to keep him. But they have Weatherly, Bower, the new kid from OSU, and Ade Aruna (another Zimmer project) to come into his place if the leaves. Zimmer can mold talent on defense like no other. These guys are all athletic freaks.

Robison will retire after this year and free up space next year. Murray likely wont be back either next year. Treadwell won’t be back if his production doesn’t significantly increase. That all frees up atleast $10 million.

All in all: They will have to ask some veterans (Rudolph, Griffen, Smith, maybe Cousins) to restructure their deals to keep all three.

As a Pats fan why would I be frightened by a guy on a team we play once every 4 years?

I just think the Vikings massively overpaid for a QB who has not proven he can rise to the occasion and beat good teams. They could have re-signed Keenum for 1/2 the money and had a very serviceable QB and allowed the team to spend more on other players….like those mentioned in this article.

I guess it make sense as a Pats fan to troll every Viking article with your Packer brethren since you are both sharing the same train back to the 1970s.

  25. I’m not going to argue whether Cousins is good or bad for the Vikings as time will tell. However, from a cap space the Vikings did not take a huge hit signing Cousins compared to last year.

According to Spotrac.com the 2018 Vikings are on the hook for a 26 Millon cap hit between Cousins and Siemein. The 2017 Vikings were on the hook for 18 mil in Bradford, 2 mil for Bridgewater & 2 mil for Keenum. That’s 22 mil total.

Cousins is a 4 mil dollar increase in the Vikes cap hit for the QB position this year. Incidentally Floyd was on the books last year for 6 mil but was cut for this year. Not sure if there is dead money left for him but if not then the total cap hit is a wash.

People who think the Vikings are currently in cap hell as a result of this signing are not really informed.

  27. Vikings paid a lot for Cousins but in 2 years it won’t seem like much. Biggest benefit for the Vikings is Cousins isn’t limited, he can let it rip. 40 yarder is no problem for Cousins. Keenum was great but he was limited. I hope he does great in Denver.

  28. Vikings will probably carry over 10 million in cap space and cap will go up at least 10 million next year. I’m confident they Vikings can keep all three. Diggs will demand the most and be the hardest to hold on to. He’ll get some great offers if he can stay healthy an entire season. The fear from the Packer trolls is palpable…gonna be another fun year for the Kings of North and World Class Vikings!

  29. If the Cap guru can’t get it done, no one can. A poster earlier made a good comment, a trade. Not one of those three though. Wouldn’t touch the starting D, I’d start with renegotiating some contracts on the O, like Rudolph, Reiff if that can’t get it done, trades(that’ll make Trader Rick happy), some veteran cuts, Sherels, Robison or the combination of all three.

  30. Probably will get 2 of the 3 to sign. Diggs and whoever has the least capable backup behind them.

  31. Nice to have the problem of a whole bunch of great players entitled to good contracts. Much more interesting to speculate on that issue rather than lack either the creativity or intellectual capacity to do nothing other than speculate on the value of Cousin’s contract day, after day, after day, after day.

  32. That would be nice to sign all three as all are deserving of it. I don’t get people on here saying Barr isn’t very good in was a Pro Bowl player and played very well last year after being called out on the year before. As far as dirty only packer saps are still crying about Barr’s style of play.

    Really?

The Eagles are dead last in available cap space currently, with $322,485 available.

The Vikings are #12 in available cap space, with $15,221,343 available AFTER signing Cousins.

And for the Packer fans claiming the Vikings are in cap hell, the Packers are #14 in available cap space, with $14,460,093 available BEFORE the eventual NFL record breaking contract for Rodgers.

These are facts, not the unadulterated BS that the “Cap Hell” protagonists are spreading.

  36. I wonder, if you guys will have buyer’s remorse over the Kirk cousins thing? I wonder who will be better off since your offensive coordinator is now the giants coach(thank you, btw) and you have a qb who can’t beat teams who are over. 500. Why do I think the Vikings just went backwards. Being a giants fan I’m a little more worried with Alex Smith in the division than I was with Kirk Cousins. As the knight in the Indiana Jones movie said, Minnesota as far as qbs go”he chose poorly.” Doesn’t sound like a good front office to me, but then again we’ve had Jerry Reese sooooo……would I really know a good front office if I saw One? Even though the current giants front office is off to a good start. I know you’re saying he didn’t draft a replacement for Eli, but I understand why they put in Geno Smith last year instead of Webb. In case you hadn’t noticed our oline was a dumpster fire, ie no use in putting him in a situation to fail like David Carr’s first year with the Texans.

  38. I think the biggest priority out of the remaining guys is Diggs,Hunter, and Waynes. I think if you need to let someone go it’s Barr.

Barr is a fantastic player, don’t get me wrong. When he is playing great, he can take over a game. But he has had injury and character concerns (accused of coasting). What I would have done, is traded him during this years draft to move up and get a good offensive lineman, or to get an extra pick.

I think you sign Diggs. MN has struggled at drafting WR’s, and just the position in general. Diggs is someone they lucked into finding late in a draft. He is tops in the league in contested catches. He is a big reason our offense has been better. Hunter is a fantastic edge rusher and that position is a premium in the league now a days. Same with Wyanes. He has gotten better each year, and having good Corners is a premium.

Barr is the odd person out. Linebacker is just not the position of importance it used to be. The Eagles showed us that. They stacked their D-line, and had very weak Linebackers.

You do realize that Keenum’s current deal is for $18 mil per year average – which is way more than half of Cousins deal.

There is no way that Cousins is 10 mil per better than Keenum. That’s the point here.

Cousins used his leverage so badly all the way through, he’s brainwashed people into thinking he is a Pro Bowl QB.

Show me a team that features a 30 mil per a year QB and I’ll show you one with tons of flaws.

Minny’s window just went from about 5 years to 1.

I have said ROOKIES can not be counted on to be significant contributes in their first season because it has proven to be rare, multiple times because cheese eaters are counting on a pair of rookie CBs to be just that. If you can’t understand that that is too bad. You should just complain about their only be Viking “fight pickers” on here some more as that seems all you are capable of understanding.

  42. Vikings front office will get it done – get Diggs deal done first! “The Miracle Man” should be first on the list, he is and will be a very viable receiver for years to come!

  43. Brzezinski is one of the best, I have complete confidence in whatever he and Spielman decide to do

  44. Diggs has to be the top priority, him and thielen locking down the outsides for the next 5-10 years will keep defenses on their heels especially with Delvin Cook back catching out of the backfield and Rudolph resurging to the top tier of TE’s.

The only thing that will keep the vikings from a top 5 offense is an injury to Cousins.

  45. Can somebody explain to me why the Vikings have more salary cap space than the Packers even though they (currently) pay their quarterback more than the Packers pay their quarterback and have an immensely more talented roster?

    _________

I think we’re all hoping for something more than a couple of playoff appearances but there are no guarantees that any one player is going to deliver a Super Bowl. Very few of us are under the illusion that Case Keenum would do any better.

If Cousins performs exactly as he has in the past, I expect that he’ll bring the best out of the talent on the roster. The Vikings have had talented rosters but no quarterback in the past and it hasn’t worked out. I think it’s time to try something new. If he has another 4,000+ yards and 25+ touchdowns, I don’t see how that would make them less likely to win.

  47. People love to point to Cousins’ poor record against winning teams as if the rest of the team has nothing to do with a win or loss. Last year in Washington they were 2-8 against winning teams. They averaged 21.2 points per game and gave up 30 points per game.

The Vikings were 6-4 against winning teams (including playoffs). They averaged 19.7 points per game and gave up 20.7 points per game.

    See the difference?

  48. I thought pack trolls were bad, now come the jealous patriot trolls. Yes we he Vikings are for real and the packers and patriots are on their dowslide. Next…..

  49. Honestly all the “buyers remorse” stuff you all keep posting looks like nothing more than fans of other teams being nervous that a team already riddled with talent just got a top 10 to 12 qb. It’s easy to sit there and act like you know anything about what it was like having keenum at the helm when you’re watching probably 2 maybe 3 Vikings games all year at the most. He had a great year, and I wish him the best, but you didn’t truly know what you were getting from him every Sunday and I think I speak for a majority of Vikings fans when I say, watching keenum play made me feel like I had to hold my breath the entire game. It’s a joke to say that he’s better than cousins based on that single year, there’s a reason he came in as the 3rd stringer and hadn’t really played well at leading up to this season which could very much be contributed to a roster that made it easy for him. Cousins puts up consistent 4k passing yards with quite a lot of tds at a pretty good td to int ratio, he just threw some bonehead picks on occasion for the same reason you saw Favre do the same back in the day. When you have a horrible team with little to no talent and little protection to give him time, he was trying to bring his team back from a deficit because if he didn’t will his team to a victory, they weren’t gonna win because of anyone else. His stats are great, and no, win loss records don’t count when referring to qbs, especially ones on really bad teams. This isn’t baseball where a pitcher can be the soul reason a team wins. This is why they strap pitcher’s with a win loss record. To sit there and pretend like you can do the same with a single player in football is just idiotic. There are far too many variables and other players that a player is forced to depend on. I mean why would anyone think that cousins is the reason Washington has been bad? If anything he was the only thing keeping them floating. And to the pats fan, no one cares if you’re more worried about them with Alex Smith cause it doesn’t matter, the afc isn’t very good and neither is Washington no matter who is at qb or how great of stats they put up. What cousins does for Minnesota is give them dependable and reliable passing numbers to allow them have a true passing game to improve this balanced offense, oh yeah, cousins has never had a run game of any kind to support him. He may have been a bad signing for some of the team’s that wanted him, like the jets, but for the Vikings, who already have an extremely talented roster, he becomes much more valuable. And btw, we aren’t in cap hell by any means at all. We have 15 mil in space right this moment, his contract didn’t kill us by any means and next year after we get to watch Rogers sign a contract that will eclipse everyone, it’ll likely look like a pretty decent deal. You assume we are in cap hell because it’ll be difficult to extend all the players we want to. It’s not because of the cap, it’s because that year in the draft, we had one of the single best drafts in NFL history and we are trying to extend literally every player we drafted. We would’ve likely found this difficult to do regardless of what happened with cousins. I mean you guys are all talking as if we have some terrible front office, when in reality we have such an impressive FO when it comes to drafting that we are having trouble keeping them all. That’s a decent problem to have. Oh and Vikings fans, don’t base your opinion on the extensions and who should get them ahead of someone else based on who you think is better or more talented. You need to be looking at how difficult it will be to replace each individual player and how long it would take. Of what’s left, diggs and Barr should be the most important in that group. It’ll be a nightmare to find a replacement for either one of those guys, especially considering their age. As much as I love Hunter, and I do expect them to find a way to extend all of these guys, finding a #2 defensive end would likely be the easiest to replace without losing performance on the defense. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but it’s clear that if you look at it that way, based on the drop off of their replacements or how difficult it would be to supplement their talent and skill, a front side defensive end would at the very least be the easiest to find in Free agency. As for the non Vikings fans, go back to your own team and quit pretending you even know anything about the Vikings based on the like 2 articles and maybe 3 games you saw them play.you have no idea what the situation is, and your comments make you look like you’re nothing more than worried
