Dak Prescott: I don’t know if any team in league necessarily needs a No. 1 WR

Dez Bryant produced three 1,000-yard seasons in his eight seasons in Dallas. He has caught 531 passes for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns in his career.

His departure leaves the Cowboys without a true No. 1 receiver.

That suits quarterback Dak Prescott just fine.

“I don’t know if any team in the league necessarily needs a No. 1 receiver,” Prescott said. “It’s about getting the ball out, spreading the ball around, keeping the defense on its toes.”

The Cowboys’ projected top-five receivers have one 1,000-yard season among them. Allen Hurns, Deonte Thompson, Cole Beasley, Terrance Williams and third-round pick Michael Gallup have combined for 750 receptions for 9,659 yards and 65 touchdowns.

Beasley and Williams are the only returning receivers among those five, leaving Prescott needing time and repetitions to get to know Hurns, Thompson and Gallup.

“I mean the only thing you can do is just get out there with routes on air, things like that,” Prescott said. “We did a bunch together. Me and these young guys have been here before we even started OTAs, getting that timing down so we can get in OTAs and have good feel for each other and now with the defense in front of us, grow off of that and grow from what we’ve already accomplished. That’s the best thing I can do.”

  1. No but they need a number 1 QB ! …of which you are not. One of the league’s biggest talkers.

  2. I think you need to have that 1 guy that can win when you need him to win the most. They are called #1 receiver for a reason. Now, if you have 2 number 1 receivers, what do you have?

  3. The Eagles just won it all without a 1000 yard rusher or receiver. He’s right.

However, you need a competent QB.

  4. If an offense’s pass system is fundamentally all 1v1 matchups, WR vs. CB, then a #1 matters because the WR’s skills will create separation.

However, many offenses these days utilize combination routes and passing concepts that create separation based on the play’s scheme, not the WR’s skill set.

  5. Dak is not a # 1 QB?

    2017 62.9% 3324 YDS 22 TD 13 INT 86.6 Winning Record 9-7
    2016 67.8% 3667 YDS 23 TD 4 INT 104.9 Winning Record 13-3

Cowboy haters will be Haters no reason to try and justify but Dak is True Blue bawling

  6. Good thing for Dak, he has no number 1 and the Dallas salary cap is a mess even with a QB on his late round rookie deal, so he won’t get one even if he believed his own BS.

  7. Exactly right. No more worrying about force feeding the ball to anyone and pouting if they don’t get it.

  8. True, but if Belichick thought a top WR would improve the offense he would have signed one after losing Moss. Great slot receivers and TEs are more important to playoff football.

Ahhh the Patriots had Tom Brady

The Patriots figured this out years ago

    _____________

Tom Brady throughout his career had Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Troy Brown, Deion Branch, and Rob Gronkowski. Nobody in the Cowboys WR/TE group is on the level of any of them

  10. There will be a natural number one receiver that each starting QB will gravitate to as the season progresses. The depth chart will reflect a number 1 WR. You can bet that the person on that depth chart or whomever gets the lion’s share of targets from the QB, will seek #1 WR pay.

Can a team win with co-equal, but not elitely talented individuals as DAK suggests? Sure. But there isn’t a team front office that wants to go into the season without a clear number 1 WR that can help their QB and running game.

  11. With the exception of Randy Moss for a couple of years, the Patriots never had a WR on the level of Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, etc.

  12. Who is Dak Prescott? Oh the guy that talks ALOT… so basically he is saying that all we need is guys to run 5 yards. Catch s checkdown and give the ball to the RB… This is Jerruh’s plsn anyway.

  13. So he is basically saying the Cowboys offense will be a dinking and dunking offense. Very boring to watch that kind of offense.

This is the stupidity on display in many of these responses(and it is rampant in these responses) . Posting ignorance and showing their ignorance. According to overthecap Dallas is >$9million under the cap now and $65million under for 2019. It’s like people calling Dak a loudmouth and such when he is one of the quietest and most humble of men in the NFL. Ignorance or hate on display. Either is a negative character trait.

The cowboys hate is strong here. I’ll enjoy watching them run over the NFC while sipping my haterade.

And I bet you said the same last year.

  16. Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Jerry Rice, Odell…. If you are basically checking down, then no, it doesnt matter near as much. But, at some point, you will not be able to win with mere checking down. Thats when you NEED a number one. Its also when the game is much more enjoyable than that boring check down crap these QB’s are getting overpaid for today. Blah!!

  17. I bet his WRs all think Dak threw them under the bus by saying our WRs are decent, not great but it’s OK because I’m awesome and with me I’ll still win games despite their lack of skill.

I was really excited when last season started to see the Dak vs Carson rivalry start. Some actually thought Dak was better. Now, Truth be told. Dak is the 5th best QB in the NFC East. I see the Boys hoping to win 8 games.

  18. Throwing to a a TE or slot receiver doesn’t mean checking down. Many Super Bowl champions didn’t have great WRs.

  19. Well Dallas doesn’t have a #1 today and they didn’t last year at this time either….

Brady, Rodgers, Manning, Big Ben, and Rivers don’t or didn’t need #1 WR’s. The rest of the league does..
    _______________
What are you talking about. Have you heard of Antonio Brown. The steelers always have a number 1 if not two number ones! They are a deep ball team. Manning-Odell, Hello!!!, Brady, Gronk is Brady’s #1 receiver-Gronk plays as a TE AND A WR, HE JUST DOES, Rivers hasn’t won a darn thing-so HE certainly must need a #1, Rodgers had Jordy Nelson.

  21. The dearth of knowledge in some of these comments is quite perplexing. Everyone has access to stats, game film, direct quotes from other pro personnel, coaches, players etc. I get it though, the other teams’ trolls are very fearful of what Dak means for their respective team’s future. For example, philthy gave up the farm to go get Carson 2nd overall, and he has nearly identical numbers to Dak since entering the league (check the stats, no really check them..I insist), whom the Cowboys drafted with one of two 4th round picks they had in that same draft. The difference between the two situations, the eagles have no ammo to draft(gave up picks), and have had to put stress on their cap by paying vets instead of paying cheaper rookie salaries. The Cowboys on the other hand have taken advantage of Dak’s low cap number and utilized their picks to put a younger, cheaper roster that will grow together.

Eagles Lombardi says otherwise …. You also cant compare the 2 from year one. Dak got dropped into a system that was already in place for years. Wentz had a rookie HC going to a team that was destroyed by Chip Kelly. Yet once philllys system was in place more than a year …. Wentz Destroyed little Dink n Dak . Carson Threw more TDs with a told ACL then Dak did in how many games ? ahahahahah

  23. I feel like it doesn’t matter who the cowboys qb is he is always the most hated man football. My entire life I grew up listening to people bash the cowboys qb no who it was

  24. Is anyone else getting the feeling, especially after last year and Witten retirign and getting Dez dusted off, that this guy is gonna suck something fierce?!?

    #SecondComingOfRG3

  25. Makes sense, no #1 receiver, no #1 quarterback either and a puppet for a coach.

    Jerrys 3 Ring Circus.

    Fly Eagles Fly.

  26. Dak is 100 % right. In the last 19 years there’s been only two teams with #1 receivers to win a super bowl. Manning colts with harrison and the St louis Rams.

  27. Dont twist my comment to fit your illogical retort. First, winning the Lombardi is not like winning a major in golf. No automatic qualifications, have to actually show up any play the next season to qualify for any tournament. And if the last 60+ years are any indication, we wont be seeing philthy anytime soon. Second, how do you give Wentz a pass on year one but don’t even acknowledge the difficulty that Dak had in his second, or that the ‘perfect system’ went 4-12 the season prior to Dak taking them to a 12-4 record in his brilliant rookie season (best of all time btw). Again, you are a troll and facts and logic do not enter into your process.

  28. @mm556 said, “And I bet you said the same last year.”

And the 20 years before that as well. 😂
