Jon Gruden revels in ripping off the Chiefs

That close friendship between Andy Reid and Jon Gruden could be tested, sooner or later.

Gruden, now the coach of the Raiders, recently did a victory lap regarding the team’s signing of former Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson.

“Last time I was here in Oakland, we stole [quarterback] Rich Gannon from Kansas City, we took [receiver] Andre Rison from the Chiefs, we took [defensive back] Albert Lewis from the Chiefs,” Gruden said in a conference call with Raiders season-ticket holders, via Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star. “We love stealing from the Chiefs. So now we’ve got Derrick Johnson, and I’m on my way to the Raiders store to pick up a Derrick Johnson Raiders jersey. I’m going to wear it home tonight.”

Of course, the Raiders didn’t exactly “steal” Johnson from the Chiefs. The Chiefs cut Johnson, and the Raiders signed him after an extended stretch on the open market. But those facts won’t get the fan base properly riled up, will they?

“Well, we feel like we have solidified the middle of our defense big time,” Gruden said. “We added Derrick Johnson, the all-time leading tackler in Kansas City Chief history. He started every game for them last year, they were the division champions.”

It’s surely just huffing and puffing, a little Gruden being Gruden. It’s one of the reasons why the NFL is better when he’s in it.

That’s ultimately why none of this will undermine the fact that Gruden and Reid are and have been close, for years. If their relationship didn’t trump team loyalty, there’s no way Reid would have let Gruden anywhere close to practice or production meetings in advance of Gruden’s final game at ESPN, a Titans-Chiefs postseason contest played at a time when everyone (most specifically Gruden’s former on-air partner Sean McDonough) knew that Gruden had a deal in place to coach the Raiders.

  1. Going back to 20 years ago, I always thought that Gruden was perfectly suited for the role of used-car salesman. He excels at producing sound bites that can con the more gullible elements of a fanbase (which is a primary reason why Son-of-Al brought him back as a publicity stunt).

But the FACTS remain that Gruden’s track record on the field as a HC is mediocre-at-best, rusty HC’s who are much better than Gruden have failed, and most of the moves Gruden has executed this offseason have downgraded the Raiders roster.

I hope that I’m wrong, but I do live in reality.

  2. “We added Derrick Johnson, the all-time leading tackler in Kansas City Chief history. He started every game for them last year, they were the division champions.” … He may have started every game, but he got benched basically every other series for a guy named Kevin Pierre-Louis.

  3. love the HATERS who know Gruden is about to build a monster just like he did his first time around until the officials stole playoff games away from him vs Baltimore and Patriots. He is back and so are Raiders so get use to it!!!

  4. giving the Broncos’ perspective here, I can see the Raiders or Chiefs finishing in last place this year, likely the Raiders. I think the Chargers are the team to beat.

As a longtime Bucs fan, he was decent as a head coach. I mean – he coaxed a Super Bowl win out of the noodle-armed Brad Johnson (and yes, that fierce D helped).

BUT – his issue came when he tried to “buy the groceries.” He forced out Rich McKay (who never got enough credit for building that roster, everyone says it was Dungy’s players. McKay had a HUGE role in that.) and brought in yes-man/clown Bruce Allen.

In other words, if you’re Reggie McKenzie, start burnishing the resume.

  6. To be very much a realist,
A.) it’s apparent the Raiders draft was a ‘reach’ for most picks. Gruden is a barely above .500 coach. He won a SB w Tony Dungy’s guys. Mark Davis going to Gruden is like bringing a playboy playmate to a party…. except she was a playmate in 1971
B.) the rest of the AFC West is happy the Chiefs traded Alex Smith
C.) It doesn’t look like the Broncos improved their O-line. Kennum IS better than Simien and Lynch, but can he make the O-line better like Manning did? Talib is gone but they did improve at Safety. They are the wild card of this division
D.) Chargers got ALOT better this year. As much as it pains me to say it, they will win this division (IF they stay healthy… off to a bad start with Hunter Henry)

  7. This just so reminds me of Bill Walsh when he was just starting out with the 49ers. They got a “washed up” old veteran inside linebacker named Jack “Hacksaw” Reynolds, from their division rival Rams, and Reynolds solidified their defense, calling all the signals and getting everyone lined up correctly, and he helped them to their first two super bowl titles. That ILB position is a lot more about smarts and preparation than it is about anything physical. When your ILB knows what’s coming before the ball gets snapped, that’s a huge advantage for the other 10 guys on defense. That’s why they picked up Derrick Johnson. Of course, Gruden and Andy Reid are very close friends, so this is just Jon’s way of having fun with his buddy. Andy loves it too. I’m sure Gruden getting back in the league has Andy a little more excited too. The AFC West is fun again. TV ratings are going to go through the roof when these two teams lock horns.

That’s nice, but the Chiefs still have a much better coach.

I am hoping this is sarcasm. I am neither a Chiefs or Raiders fan but Reid is not a better coach. He can build a fairly good regular season team but falls very short of a good post season team. Yes, he owned the NFC But didn’t bring home any hardware that mattered. He is also poor at game/clock managment. Gruden built up the Raiders as a super bowl contending team then got sent to Tampa and took thatbteam to the Super Bowl with Brad Johnson at the helm and beat his old team.

  9. This is the way it should be. Chiefs and Raiders at each others throats. Looking forward to this season. Mahomes will have his ups and downs but I think the ups will outweigh the downs, we are going to see a long elite QB rivalry with Carr and Mahomes and it’s going to involve Super Bowl rings in the AFC West. Yeah I know Mahomes is greener than grass, but I’ve seen enough of the sample size. Hes gonna be the real deal and possibly the most exciting QB in the NFL.

  10. Gruden trying to rebuild a rivalry, throwing a little gas on the fire.
He also picks up someone who knows the Chiefs defense, which I am sure he will debrief Johnson and force the Chiefs to make some changes.

Andy Reid is one of, if not the best Head Coach in the regular season. And his track record proves it. Just like one of his predecessors, Marty S.

  12. So everyone who picks up some guy who was cut has ripped off the team who dumped him? Well in that case … my garbage is piling up … please come by and rip me off.

Yeah it’s like two drowning men clinging to one another to try and stay alive or in this case….battle for 3rd place

    1) Chargers
    2) Broncos
    3) Chiefs
    4) Raiders

  14. Anyone who says picking up Johnson wasn’t a good move by the Raiders is either delusional or lying.

  15. So Jon Gruden gets last years Kansas City division champs quarterback of their defense. While his brother Jay Gruden gets Kansas City’s quarterback of their offense.

  16. Gruden wants attention so he talks trash. Maybe his next move should be into politics.

  17. Johnson was the slowest LB on the leagues 30th “best” defense last year… Chucky may have gained some valuable knowledge of the Chiefs defense with the signing but with KC likely having 7-8 new starters on defense DJ likely won’t be helping there either.

KC’s defense is better without DJ and yet the Raiders think he somehow helps them. Is the raiders defense really that bad?

  18. I’m kind of looking for a reason to give a crap about the NFL this season, so this is nice.

  19. Taking a page out of the Trump playbook – we “stole” a guy who had been cut and was on the street. And his followers believe every word. There is no truth anymore.

  20. YES THE RAIDERS ARE BACK,BACK TO SUCKING,,JOKE FANCHISE JOKE FANS JOKE COACH ,,,THIS FRANCHISE HAS SUCKED FOR SOOOOO LONG ITS NOW TRADITION ,,,,HAHAHAHAHA

  21. Chuckie is a classless d-bag.

That said, his career win pct equates to a 9-7 record. Most yrs, unless you play in a bad division, you need 10 wins to reach the playoffs.

  22. DJ had some great years. The last 3-4 weren’t amongst them. I wish he would have retired a hero in KC, rather than a washed-up player in Chokeland. The Chiefs will be significantly improved this year.

  23. cmonitsfunny says:

    Johnson was a great player…was.
Maybe Gruden can pick up Derrick Thomas too.
    ****************************************************
have some respect for the deceased you clown!

  24. No one else wanted any part of him, for football reasons that are beyond the outdated knowledge of Gruden. Kelce and Hunt will be cruising right past him on the way to the endzone, repeatedly. Slowest guy in the league. But that is an upgrade on the fade D.

  25. My beloved Eagles won sb52… FACTS!!! Seriously i hate that facts crap cuz if its a decent fact u wont have to point it out.
@old goat…. U say mahomes is gonna be the most exciting qb in the nfl. I think youre forgetting about our qb #11 Mister Carson Wentz

    ———————————————————————————————–

And everyone will beat them, they are the Chargers after all…

  27. I would be more worried if he had hired DJ as the LB coach. On the field, he is about 2 steps to slow. He knows where he needs to be, he just can’t get there fast enough.

Now as far as Gruden stealing from the Chiefs…you can’t steal someone that has been released.
