Lamar Miller: Adrian Peterson would help us

Adrian Peterson spends a lot of time in Houston and has made frequent mention of the Texans as a team he’d like to play for as he tries to find a place to continue his playing career in 2018.

Any move in that direction would likely impact Texans running back Lamar Miller‘s usage during the coming season, but Miller said during an appearance on NFL Network that he isn’t opposed to the idea of Peterson joining the club.

“I used to look up to Adrian Peterson growing up,” Miller said. “He runs the ball hard. He’s a great running back. He’s been a great running back in this league for years. It would be good to have him join us, just his leadership, seeing the things he’s done in previous years, that I feel like I could probably learn from him. It would help us out as a team.”

The Texans haven’t shown any signs of making a move for Peterson, who split last season between the Saints and Cardinals. He was part of a deep running back group with the Saints and showed little sign of being a fit for that kind of use before having a couple of strong pre-injury outings as the lead back in Arizona.

With Miller and the expected return of D'Onta Foreman from an Achilles injury, the Texans situation would seem to be closer to the one with the Saints so Miller may not be getting the chance to learn from Peterson this year.

  1. Ask yourself, seriously, are those 2yds per carry really worth all the negative publicity?

He certainly could whip that team into shape.

Heard that same joke when Peterson returned to the Vikings after his suspension and when he joined the Saints and again when he signed with the Cardinals…no original Adrian Peterson jokes?

  3. Peterson was a great back at one time. Now he’s old and he’s too one-dimensional. He’s not worth the trouble, as New Orleans found out last year. He needs to hang it up.

  4. This actually makes some sense to me. Lamar Miller is better as a third down back and D’Onta Foreman is coming off of a torn achilles. That’s a serious injury (and a predictable one, considering how Charlie Strong rode him into the ground), I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t up to snuff, at least at the beginning of the season. Peterson could come in as insurance in the beginning of the season before he runs out of gas. He lives in Houston and would be motivated to earn a roster spot.

  5. AP is past the point in his career with so many injuries of playing a 16 game season without hitting IR. There’s not enough tread left on these tires.

  6. AP is a fun target to pick on. I get it. And sometimes he makes it very easy to be the target of jokes.

HOWEVER,, let’s not kid ourselves and pretend he could not benefit a team like Houston. A change of pace back, still has a mean streak, and with the play action could really open things up for Watson, Hopkins, etc.

Houston and a few other teams could still benefit from AP on a two-year deal. He will not be the workhorse back he once was, but a few carries a game is worth a shot.

Foreman had ONE season in college with more than 100 carries, his 323 carries in 2016 was less than the 339 Peterson had in 2004, and it was less than the 361 carries that Ricky Williams had in 1998. Is one to assume that you think Foreman is soft because he carried 300 times in a season?

  8. This dude only watched APs highlight tape. Its feast and famine with him. You gotta feed him the ball 30 times to get good results. But its not worth it because you end up in a lot of 3rd and long situations.

  9. Adrian peterson is not done. he had 4 games with 20+ carries in 2017. His team won 3 of them (including a win over the MIGHTY jaguars). 2 100 yard games.
Somebody should sign him and just stash him for when the going gets tough and you need to call up a true battering ram to hold your lead. Not every rb can do that. Im a big old whodat and even I want him BACK!

yes because running in obvious running formations an expecting him to beat 8 man fronts like he did in minnesota is not going to work, plus most of the time Teddy Bridgewater did not scare teams with his weak arm. The guys still put up 75 yards a game with Arizona last in limited time, he could be effective in 10 to 12 carries agame with Watson.

The problem is his attitude and probably the money he wants. This isn’t Frank Gore. He isn’t going to sit quietly on the bench until its time to bring him in late in games to protect a lead. You need to feed him early and often, you can’t throw him the ball, and you can’t trust him to make a block.

  12. The problem isn’t his attitude, he’s grown. He still has juice, would be a great complement to Miller, so let’s please not lie about how it’s time to hang it up.

    __________

The problem is that if you put him in the game, the defense knows you’re going to run him. It won’t be a pass because he can’t pass block or catch. He hasn’t been able to consistently beat a defense that was trying to stop him since 2012. He would not be effective in any other number of carries.

Not sure why you felt the need to lash out on him.

  15. Hate to say it because I enjoyed watching him when he was younger, nut the only gas left in AP’s tank is E85.

  16. Huge Texans fan here…. I actually wouldn’t mind signing AD. Miller isn’t adding anything of value to the team. Foreman is a 3 down back, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes him a little bit to get going after the achilles injury. If Peterson has even a little left in the tank, he can help take some pressure off Watson. I don’t want to be stuck seeing Alfred Blue back there if Foreman isn’t good to go and Miller can’t get it done.

  17. I don’t think Houston runs a lot of Power-I formation with DeShaun Watson. Peterson in a spread set with no fullback out of the shotgun, we’ve seen for YEARS now that’s not his forte. Not to mention all the wear and tear, rarely breaks tackles anymore, has no change of direction, useless blocking/catching, can’t outrun anyone to the edges, so every time he steps on the field it instantly keys the defense into EXACTLY what they’re doing. He is so limited and one dimensional which honestly he always was, just doesn’t have the burst or super human power to overcome his predictability like he used to.

Not to mention the arrogance and ego he STILL brings where he demands that everything be catered to him, regardless of whether it’s best for the team or not.

This guy is BEYOND DONE. It’s almost getting embarrassing at this point.
